ABOUT BWY

The Bus for World Youth (BWY) is a voluntary Post Program Activity organized by the Peruvian

Alumni Association of the Ship for World Youth (SWY) program.

The Ship for World Youth (SWY) program is organized and implemented by the Director

General for Policies on Cohesive Society from the Cabinet Office of the Japanese

Government.

The purpose of SWY is to broaden the global view of the Japanese youths, to promote mutual

understanding and friendship between Japanese and foreign youths as well as to cultivate the

spirit of international cooperation and the competence to practice it; and furthermore to foster

the youths with capability of showing leadership in various areas of international society.

SWY aims at establishing networks and promoting joint activities amongst young people

around the world through providing, as a concrete and practical opportunity, the cohabitation

on board a ship which is the epitome of international society with wide variety of cultures and

ideas. In this manner, SWY program makes a visible international contribution from the

perspective of human resource development.

The BWY project was proposed by the Peruvian delegation on board SWY 21 (2009) with the

objective of traveling through Peru with the same spirit of the Ship, but on a Bus.

The invitation was opened to all SWY Alumni, resulting in the registration of 25 participants

from Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland and Peru; from batches 15, 16, 17 and 21.

The objective of the Bus for World Youth Program was to reassure participant’s commitment

with society and leadership through volunteer work and donations for Peruvian communities in

need.

THE VOLUNTARY ACTIVITIES Peru is a land with wonderful marvels, but with communities in need as well. That’s what we

wanted to show to our participants, the real Peruvian face. In order to achieve that, we tried to

get them involved in different kind of social works in different places on our way. We included

coast and highland communities in different poverty scales. In each place we tried to create an

environment of partnership, solidarity and cultural exchange. The communities visited follow.

PISCO (ICA) - December 30th 2009

Pisco was very near the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake which struck south central

Peru on August 2007. Pisco originally prospered because of its nearby vineyards and is the

namesake of the Peruvian grape liquor, pisco.

We assisted the NGO “Espacio Expresion” in their cultural activities for the youth in Pisco by

donating 10 “cajones peruanos” (Peruvian music instrument) and the tuition for classes to learn

how to play this instrument in order to reinforce their identity through music. We also shared

information about SWY program with local youth.

EL CARMEN (ICA) - December 30th 2009

El Carmen is popular within the country as a place where the Afro-Peruvian race is predominant

in all cultural manifestations.

We assisted the Afro Peruvian Cultural Center San Daniel Comboni (CCA) for children of the

district, by making paper lanterns with them and participanting in a parade to promote their

activities. We also provided them with materials for their library.

CHALHUANCA (AREQUIPA) - January 2nd 2010

Chalhuanca is located near the “Colca Canyon”, the most important tourist attraction in

Arequipa because it is known to be the second deepest canyon in the world. In spite of that, few

people come to visit Chalhuanca. The community is isolated and forgotten and a large

proportion of the population lives in poverty. During winter season, this village is one of the

most affected by the cold temperature that sometimes can reach below -20 C.

The group spent the morning sharing with the children of the local school of Chalhuanca: I.E. N°

40399 "Juan Velasco Alvarado” and provided them with warm clothes for the winter. The local

children recited poems and danced with traditional costumes for us. Two BWY participants had

the opportunity to wear traditional clothes during the hours we stayed in here.

PUNO (CITY + UROS + AMANTANI + TAQUILE + SILLUSTANI) - January 3rd 2010

Amantani island is located in the Peruvian side of Tititcaca Lake at 38 Km from the city of Puno.

The main economic activities in Amantani are agriculture and farming.

The group had a homestay experience with families of the area to share their cultures. They also

provided educational materials for the local libraries of 2 towns: the rural communities of Villa

Orinojon and Lampayuni.

SARAH PINCHEVSKY – SWY 21 Canada

Tuesday January 5th 2010:

So we just arrived in Cusco and have less than a week and what is sure to be a highlight, Macchu

Picchu, yet to come.

This experience has been so wonderful and so different from anything we could experience as just

another backpacker in Peru. We participated in various voluntary activities - visiting sustainable

development projects in Pisco, a community near Lima that was devastated by the earthquake in

Aug 2007, helping with a special crafts project in El Carmen, a community where Afro Peruvian

culture is very strong, bringing coats to children in the very poor community of Chalhuanca, which

is near the Colca Canyon, a huge tourist attraction, but tucked out of the way and so not

benefitting from tourist dollars, and visiting a library on Amantani Island, on Lake Titicaca, where

we also had a homestay.

In each of these voluntary activities, we were able to spend time with the people of these

communities and learn a bit more about their lives, and also donate much needed items, from

drums to help promote afro peruvian culture to coats to books and school supplies. These moments

have been truly special.

We have experienced the highs of dancing in the street to afro peruvian drum beats and having a

private performance by the world famous Ballumbrosio family to the highs of living (and doing our

best to breathe!) at 4000m above sea level in Puno and Lake Titicaca.

We celebrated a truly special new years eve, arriving in Arequipa at 11:15pm after a 17 hour bus

trip, but rang in the new year with pisco sours in hand and dancing to latin beats.

It has been incredible so far and its not over yet! There have been many special moments, and

much more to be experienced so I am off to see what Cusco has to offer!

Muchas gracias to the BWY committee!!!!!!

Sunday January 10th 2010:

BWY is officially over. In about one hour 18 of the 25 of us that began this Bus for World Youth

journey will head to Cusco airport to return to Lima. Others will then go on to explore northern

Peru, spend some relaxing days in Lima, or move on to more adventures in other South

American countries. I will begin my return journey to Canada tonight at midnight and I am not

very happy about it, specially as I am quite tired right now after a big farewell party last night

and not looking forward to the long journey ahead.

This trip has been very eye opening, inspirational and most of all, SO ENJOYable!!! We have

seen not only the truly awe inspiring Inca sites that Cusco and its surroundings have to offer,

but we have experienced the beautiful neighbourhoods of Lima like bohemian Barranco and

modern Miraflores, the extreme poverty of communities like Chalhuanca and the people of

Uros islands but also the many people who come to cities like Lima, Arequipa and Cusco in

search of something that seems to elude them.

We have also seen, importantly, the extreme resourcefulness and joyful spirit of the Peruvian

people. It seems that despite the wonder of Machu Picchu and the gorgeous landscapes and

more gorgeous people that Peru has to offer, it does not get as many tourists as other South

American countries, and the people of Peru seem to work hard and find creative ways to

promote and preserve their cultures, attract tourists, and develop their own sustainable

development projects, be it environmental, economic, social or cultural (or as is often the case,

a combination of several!).

We have just spent our last 4 days in Cusco, Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes. In Cusco we

visited many incredible Inca sites like Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, and Ollantaytambo, the last

surviving Inca town. We did 2 days of tours to sites within Cusco and the surrounding areas,

including a hike through salt flats down through the sacred valley, and lots and lots of Inca

ruins. We then did a one day hike along the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. We hiked about 2 hours

up Machu Picchu mountains which was very difficult as there were large stone steps and the

high altitude makes it hard to catch your breath. After lunch we had a much more enjoyable

hike to the sun gate of Machu Picchu, through what our guide calls Peruvian Flat, ie up and

down, but not too difficult, and a wonderful chance to explore the gorgeous flora and fauna of

the rainforest that brought us to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival at the sun gate, we were greeted

by an amazing view of Machu Picchu which made the hike well worth it. We then hiked down

through Machu Picchu and caught a bus to Agua Calientes, the town that seems only to exist

to house and feed the tourists headed for Machu Picchu.

Page 17: BUS FOR WORLD YOUTH PERU 2009-2010 FINAL REPORTCHALHUANCA (AREQUIPA) - January 2nd 2010 Chalhuanca is located near the “Colca Canyon”, the most important tourist attraction in

17

After a good night sleep, we were off at 5:15 am with, surprisingly, hordes of other tourists up

way too early, for a 2 hour tour of Machu Picchu.

It is truly incredible all that the Incas managed to create from rock. I think I took about 500

photos just of rocks! But they look beautiful, especially with the green moss that still covers

much of it, since Machu Picchu was covered over by Pachamama, or mother earth, for a long

time. After Machu Picchu, it was back to Cusco with some much needed napping on the train,

and farewell party last night and here we are! Time to move on.

Its so sad to go and say goodbye, especially to the beautiful Peruvians that worked tirelessly to

create this magnificent experience for all of us out of the goodness of their hearts. I cannot

thank enough Paola, Susy, Natalia, Diego and Oscar, the BWY committee, for everything, I

love you guys!!!! Te quiero mucho!

The SWY spirit has definitely been renewed thanks to BWY and we are already discussing

which country should organize the next BWY! Canada? Chau amigos y buena suerte a todos!

Sarah

MOHAMED ALI AHMAD – SWY 21 Canada

Tuesday January 12th 2010:

Every time someone mentions Peru, the first, if not the only, thing they know is Machu Pichu.

Obviously there are many more things that can be appreciated and enjoyed in the country we

call Peru, in the southern part of the hemisphere. The 21st Ship for World Youth introduced us

to some amazing people and the great cultural diversity and art of Peru. True to the Spirit of

the SWY Program, diplomatic relations, and cultural exchange, the Bus For World Youth, on so

many levels has lived up and exceeded what we have experienced on the SWY program.

Since Machu Pichu is one of the most well-known things/places about Peru, a trip to Peru

could not possibly been complete without our group visiting the amazing ruins of the Incas,

and venturing up the mountain on a 2 day hike to see the majestic view of the Andes.

Although Machu Pichu was a definite highlight of the Bus For World Youth, we traveled from

Lima all the way to Cusco, stopping in Ica, Arequipa and Puno. We stopped in rural

communities where we saw how in real life the various cultural communities have merged and

fused, while still keeping true to their identities and cultural background.

Page 18: BUS FOR WORLD YOUTH PERU 2009-2010 FINAL REPORTCHALHUANCA (AREQUIPA) - January 2nd 2010 Chalhuanca is located near the “Colca Canyon”, the most important tourist attraction in

18

I have lived most of my life in Canada, and have been quite fortunate to travel a little, but I see

Peru as a true multicultural society, more so than Canada. I am not saying that Peru doesn’t

have its problems, neither am I saying that I am not proud of being Canadian. What I am

saying is: Canadian society can learn a lot from the Peruvian identity or cultural model.

I could write forever about our experiences here with the BWY team, but I shall end on the note

that Peru is truly a world wonder. I recommend you all should visit, and experience what we

did…. God Bless. Viva Peru!

Much Love & Peace

DAY 1 / 28 DECEMBER 2009, MONDAY LIMA (-/L/-) PERU: A land of magnificent lost cities, rich natural and cultural heritage, has called the attention of world-wide travellers and treasure hunters alike. Peru is mostly known because of the Inca Empire and the famous citadel of Macchu Picchu. Nevertheless, Peru has much more things to offer. From its coast and sandy beaches, to its Andean mountains and lusty jungles, the country has a great variety of landscapes that invite travellers to experience fantastic adventures. The hospitality of its people, excellent climate and good accessibility welcome guests from all over the world. Your Program starts at the city of Lima. Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. It is located on the coast, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as the “City of the Kings”. It became the most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru and, after the Peruvian War of Independence, the capital of the Republic of Peru. Today, around one-third of the Peruvian population lives in its metropolitan area. Your accommodation will be set in the heart of the residential district of Miraflores, surrounded by boutiques, coffee shops, cinemas, theatres and restaurants. This is very close to Larco avenue, the most important avenue of Miraflores, and the touristic shopping center LARCOMAR. You will start the day with a Tour to the Larco Museum. The bus will pick you up at 10:00 AM. You will drive from Miraflores towards the district of Pueblo Libre, where the museum is located (25 min-drive). After your visit, the bus will take you towards the district of Lince and to a Restaurant, where you will arrive by 1:00 PM. Welcome LUNCH at El Cascajal Restaurant (1PM-4PM). After your lunch, a bus will collect you and take you to the hostel. At 6:00 PM you will have a City Tour of Modern Lima, visiting the residential districts of Miraflores and Barranco. The bus will pick you up at your hotel in Miraflores. The tour will let you explore the modern, artistic and fashionable Lima, taking you to the Bohemian district of Barranco and then passing by some interesting sites in the residential district of Miraflores; to end up at a local pub for the evening. Barranco is considered to be Lima’s most important romantic and bohemian district. It used to be a fashionable beach resort for the old aristocracy. Many people used to spend the summer here and in neighboring Chorrillos. Roam around the Main Square or central park of Barranco, observing Republican buildings, Civical Center, the church and library. Continue walking towards the “Bridge of Sighs” (Puente de los Suspiros),

which inspired local poets and musicians, including the famous Peruvian singer and composer Chabuca Granda. Take the bus and continue the tour visiting LAS PALLAS, home of Mari Solari – crafts gallery and shop dedicated to promote and cultivate some of the finest craftwork from native and rural communities within Peru. Continue towards the interesting and eclectic DEDALO arts and crafts shop, where you will find exquisite artwork from Peruvian contemporary artists, as well as crafts from all over Peru. The shop looks like a living house-gallery, with multiple corridors and rooms displaying varied and colorful pieces of art. At DEDALO you will also find a nice terrace and cafeteria, where you may try some delicious desserts, snacks or simply a coffee. The tour ends up by 9:00 PM stopping at the hostel. You will have free time until 10PM before going to a Pub/Bar in Miraflores named “Eka”, where you will spend some time and listen to good music in company of Bus for World Youth Participants and their friends. It’s up to you to stay at the hostel if you want to. Overnight/Breakfast at MIRAFLORES hostel – Hithickers Backpackers

DAY 2 / 29 DECEMBER 2009, TUESDAY LIMA (B/-/-) The bus will pick you up at 10:00 AM. Amantani islands are located in Lake Titicaca, 38 Km to the North East (NE) from the city of Puno. A boat drive from Puno to Amantani islands usually takes 3 hours. According to a 1988 census, Amantani has a population of 3,663 Quechua speakers divided among about 800 families. Amantaní is also known as the "Island of Kantuta", after the national flower of Peru and Bolivia, which grows plentifully on the island. The scenery in Amantani is dominated by two mountain peaks, Pachatata (Father Earth) and Pachamama (Mother Earth), with ancient Inca and Tiwanaku ruins on top of both. Main economic activities in Amantani are agriculture and farming. The hillsides are terraced mostly worked by hand and planted with wheat, quinoa, potatoes, and other vegetables. Livestock, including alpacas, also graze the slopes. The people of Amantaní are known for their production of textiles, as well as their ceramics. Most of the people live in houses of adobe (or mud bricks). There are no hotels at Amantani but local families offer meals and overnight lodging to visitors, as part of an innovative model of community-based tourism. Houses are commonly powered by electric generators but some families nowadays, especially the ones that have guesthouses and offer homestays, use more ecological devices like solar panels. The group will split up so to visit and stay in two communities at Amantani islands: Villa Orinojon & Lampayuni. Both communities are located very close to each other, and are small villages with not more than 25 or 30 families. You will be welcomed by your local hosts that will take you to their family guesthouse. NOTE: Rooms will have 2 or 3 beds, and you shall share toilets with group participants. You will have LUNCH at the family guesthouses. After lunch, by 2:00 PM you will be guided for a visit the community libraries – set up as part of a social project with the support of a local tour company: ALL WAYS TRAVEL. The company ALL WAYS TRAVEL has experience working with rural communities in the area of Puno, involving locals in the provision of tourism services and organizing social projects that contribute to their welfare. One of their most interesting projects is aimed to the innovation in local education. The objective is to build or implement community libraries so to teach parents and children the habit of reading, in a way to contribute to better education at the communities. This is especially important, given the characteristics of the communities in the area: communities in a situation of poverty with a large proportion of illiterate people. The project has been carried out in several communities around Puno, including communities in Amantani islands. International and national volunteers participate in the project, with the aim to provide a cultural exchange experience between the communities and visitors. Volunteer activities include: repairing, plastering and painting walls; building bookshelves, building chairs/tables, reading with school children and parents, teaching English, playing games with the children. You will carry out volunteer work at the libraries, reading and playing with the children, interacting with teachers and parents, and making new friends. You will give the community your donation, consisting of books and school materials. People in Amantani islands are very hospitable. They will enjoy your company and the opportunity to learn about you and your culture. Try to learn some Spanish, basic phrases and explanations of how you live – this will really make a difference, and ensure a wonderful cultural exchange experience.

DAY 9 / 5 JANUARY 2010, TUESDAY PUNO / SILLUSTANI / CUSCO

(B/-/-) After breakfast, at 7:30 AM start the day with a tour to Sillustani. Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial ground on the shores of Lake Umayo near Puno. The tombs, which are built above ground in tower-like structures called chullpas, are the vestiges of the Colla people, Aymara who were conquered by the Inca Empire in the 1400s. The structures housed the remains of complete family groups, although they were probably limited to nobility. After this visit, you will continue your bus drive towards Cusco. The meal will consist in personal lunch boxes - each participant will buy food according to his or her preferences to take to the activity (not included). Arrive to Cusco in the early night. Cusco has many deserved titles, such as "Historical Capital of Peru", "Archaeological Capital of America" and "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO. The origins of Cusco can be traced to ancient times. Archaeological excavations revealed that primitive residents inhabited the valley of Cusco near three millenniums ago. As from the legends, its is known that toward the XII century, Manco Capac and his wife Mama Ocllo emerged from the waters of Titicaca Lake, with the mission to carry out the foundation of a new Kingdom that would improve the conditions of life of the local populations. The couple would have to walk until finding a place in earth where the great gold scepter that Manco Cápac bears in hand would be able to submerge. They walked to the north and arrived to Pacárec Tampu (Pacaritambo), then slept in a cave until dawn, where they continued to the north arriving to the hill of Huanacaure. In this place, the sceptre could be submerged, and thus, that marked the place for the foundation of Cusco (in Quechua language: the navel of the world). Arrival in Cusco and drive to your hotel. Overnight/Breakfast at Cusco hostel – INCAMA Backpackers (**)

DAY 10 / 6 JANUARY 2010, WEDNESDAY CUSCO / RUINS (B/-/-) FREE MORNING at Cusco. In the afternoon, at 1:30 PM you will start a Half Day City Tour around Cusco, where you will visit the most important Cusco's landmarks from the Inca and Colonial times, and also, visit the nearby archaeological sites or ruins. The tour will begin visiting the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, with religious and astronomical functions for the Inca Empire, but due to its location and construction characteristics, has been considered by the Spanish people as a military fortress for a long time. It is surrounded by a spectacular fortress made up from gigantic stones weighing between 90 and 128 tons each, assembled with astonishing precision. However, it is said that Sacsayhuaman was not originally built to serve for military reasons, but that it

was the most important ceremonial center of upper Cusco. On June 24th, every year, Sacsayhuaman serves as scenery for the INTI RAYMI or “Festival of the Sun”, where thousands of people from Peru and visitors of other countries, gather to celebrate and pay homage join to the ancient GOD of the Incas. The tour will continue with visits to the archaeological sites of: Quenqo: known for its religious significance, where the Incas portrayed their three spiritual worlds, being each one represented by a sacred animal: the Andean condor, the puma and the snake. Its also locally known by its system of labyrinths. Puca Pucara: It used to be a Military fortress for the Incas. Due to its strategic location, the Incas could control from here the revenues of the people coming from the Antisuyo (jungle region of the Inca Empire) towards the sacred city and military center. Tambomachay: known by the Incas as the Temple of Water. Tambomachay or Tampumachay (from Quechua: tanpu mach'ay, resting place) is an archaeological site associated with the Inca Empire, located near Cusco. An alternate local name is "The Bath of the Inca" (El Baño del Inca). It consists of a series of aqueducts, canals and waterfalls that run through the terraced rocks. The function of the site is uncertain: it may have served as a military outpost guarding the approaches to Cusco, as a spa resort for the Incan political elite, or both. Return to Cusco and drive back to your hostel. Overnight/Breakfast at Cusco hostel – INCAMA Backpackers (**)

DAY 11 / 7 JANUARY 2010, THURSDAY MARAS & MORAY, OLLANTAYTAMBO

(B/-/-) At 9.00 am a bus will collect you at the hostel, for a Half Day Tour towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas (the Urubamba valley), where you will visit Maras, Moray & Ollantaytambo Archaeological sites. Moray is a town approximately 50 km Northwest of Cusco near the town of Maras, which is popular for a large complex of unusual Inca ruins. These include most notably several enormous terraced circular depressions that were perhaps used to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. The depth of the pits (the largest is about 30 m deep) creates a temperature gradient of as much as 15° C between the top and the bottom. It also has a very sophisticated irrigation system for providing the crops with water. Moray then is a unique place along Cusco. These terraces were used by the Incas as a laboratory to experiment with different crops. These terraces, located at different depths, created a “greenhouse effect”, enabling to grow a great variety of plant species. Thanks to this place, the Incas obtained significant progress in Agriculture. The tour continues towards the SALT MINES OF MARAS (SALINERAS DE MARAS) Maras is located 40 Km from Cusco. The Salt Mines of Maras are an interesting site to observe and photograph. Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating salty water (provided by a nearby subterranean stream) in the sun, leaving the salt behind. The mines have thousands of salt-pools, located in the surrounding hills, and where visitors may walk. When the light of the sun is reflected in the salt-pools the effect is quite stunning.

35

The tour then continues towards Ollantaytambo, known as an important administrative center for the Incas, which probably had also religion, astronomical and military purposes as well. Ollantaytambo is a town and an Inca archaeological site, located 60 Km northwest of Cusco city, at an altitude of 2,792m, in the district of Ollantaytambo, province of Urubamba. During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal state of Emperor Pachacuti who conquered the region, built the town and a ceremonial center. At the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru it served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance. Nowadays it is an important tourist attraction on account of its Inca buildings and as one of the most common starting points for the three-day, four-night hike known as the Inca Trail. In Ollantaytambo, you will visit the remains of ancient temples, fountains, cemeteries, roads, and water canals. You will pass by the town of Ollantaytambo as well; a lively village, where local people have kept their traditional customs and way of life. Along the way we will see a lot of flora and fauna with amazing landscapes, mountain, rivers and long valley. In the late afternoon you will visit The Temple of the Sun, in Quechua language known as Koricancha, which was the greater temple of the Inca Empire. It is possible to admire its fine and intact architecture, especially in its smaller temples like the moon, the rainbow, the stars, the lightning and others. In Colonial times, the Santo Domingo church was also built on this place. NOTE: The following day the group will carry out the INCA TRAIL trek towards Macchu Picchu. Group participants may need to carry a medium size or small backpack, and may leave the rest of their luggage at the hostel storage or at tour company office, until they come back to Cusco city.
