Topics covered will include strategies for reading textbooks, writing papers, studying, taking exams, talking to your professors; information about campus resources such as the Financial Aid Office, Tutoring Center, library, Advisement Office, and Disability Resource Center; learning what business is and some of the career paths one can take in business; discussing peer interactions and professional networking; navigating the registration process; and gaining an appreciation for non-academic activities on campus. Course description

BUS 1001 is a First Year Experience® course designed to help new or returning students make a successful transition to being a college student. ñ Know strategies that can help you with the emotional and physical area that are included

in college life. This includes: ñ managing your time wisely ñ staying safe and secure on campus ñ recognizing and dealing with stress ñ staying healthy ñ dealing with financial issues ñ networking with other people ñ staying motivated when the going gets tough

ñ Know how to succeed academically. This includes knowing how to:

ñ use a course syllabus ñ read a college textbook ñ talk to your professors ñ take GREAT notes ñ write GREAT papers ñ study effectively ñ recognize and deal with test anxiety ñ take tests effectively ñ avoid academic dishonesty ñ take advantage of your learning style

Required Materials

Materials you need, will be provided by the instructor or will be available on Canvas. If you do not have Internet access at home, you can access Canvas in the library at the Holland

Centennial Commons or any UHSB Computer Labs. On Canvas you will find the following:

ñ announcements (updated weekly) ñ a class schedule showing dates when each topic will be covered and when

assignments are due ñ assignments and quizzes to be taken for your out of class time

Grades

Your grade will be assigned based your assignments, final project, and a final exam.

Your grades will be available at any time on Canvas.

Point Break Down

If you miss class, you are still responsible to turn in assignments that were due that day AND check Canvas to find out about new assignments or in-class activities that you MAY OR MAY NOT BE ABLE TO make up. Assignments (25%) During class, we will discuss many subjects that will be useful to you, and you will have some hands on assignments where you can apply these topics. Late assignments will NOT be accepted. These assignments are not just “busywork” to give you something to do – each fulfills one of the objectives given at the first of this syllabus, and will help you to become a successful student. Descriptions of all assignments are found on Canvas – if you are absent, you are responsible to find out what you missed and make it up. Participation (50%) During class you will participate with the activities. This is a class that runs on YOU and YOUR interaction with others! Participate and have fun! Midterm/Final (25 %): These two assignments are intended to give each student a greater understanding of BUS 1001 as well as themselves. Through prior knowledge as well as concepts learned throughout class the student will be able to conceptualize as well as give concrete answers. The student will show mastery in the concepts presented. Final paper rubric will be given at mid-terms. Midterm 50 pts Final 100 pts

Letter grades will be assigned based on % of points earned on the scale shown below.

A grade of “incomplete” will only be given in circumstances where a student has been doing well in the

class but has a difficulty such as serious illness during the last week or two of the semester/ The First-Year Experience® is a service mark of the University of South Carolina. A license may be granted upon written request to use the term The First-Year Experience in association with educational programmatic approaches to enhance the first college year. If you need to use a computer to do schoolwork on campus, go to the Smith Computer Center or the Holland Centennial Commons on the second, mezzanine, or third floors. If you are assigned to take a test in the Testing Center, go to the North Plaza. The Library has all types of information and resources.
