BURTON CAR COMPANYWith their passion for car design and technology the brothers Dimitri and Iwan Göbel

established their company in 1993; fi rst as Duck Hunt, but in 2000 the company was renamed to Burton Car Company. Their love for the Citroën 2CV began to grow in their student years. Dimitri

graduated at the academy of art and Iwan graduated at the university for business. This mix is also the foundation of their company. Where Dimitri designs, Iwan is the one who does the marketing. Soon a 2CV was changed into a pick-up or a Lomax. During the years, hundreds of Lomaxes and pick-ups were sold.

In March 1999 the brothers opened one of the biggest 2CV shops in the Netherlands. In 2001 the company had grown into one of the best and most successful 2CV shops in the world. The company includes an online shop, workshop, research and development department, overhauling department and showroom.

At the end of 1998 the start of designing a new sportscar was made. For this, the chassis of the 2CV was used once again. May 2000 was the offi cial introduction of the Burton! Today, Burton Car Company is the largest sportscar manufacturer in the Netherlands.

Since its foundation the 2CV is powered by a 2 cylinder 2 stroke boxer engine. The cylinder capacity grew in the years from 375cc, 425cc, 435cc to 602cc in the end.

After the 2CV the boxer engine made its fi nal appear in the Visa and LNA as a 652cc engine with aluminium cylinders with a Nikasil coating. Thanks to the simple construction a minimum amount of parts these engines have proven to be reliable and strong engines. Due to the age and the wear and tear of the engine needs an overhauling one day.

When you maintain the engine according to the prescriptions of Citroën the 2CV engine has a long

lifetime. When the engine does break it is often caused by badly maintenance or the driver itself. The 2CV engine has it’s weak spots, for example oil spill. If the driver doesn’t often check the oil level this can lead to serious engine damage. Oil spill is often lead by a malfunctioning oil fi ller pipe. Inside of the oil fi ller pipe there’s a membrane which regulates the oil pressure inside the engine. When this membrane is malfunctioning the oil pressure can get to high inside the engine and this results in oil spill. The engine has a few weak spots like the pushrod tube seals and at the front of the camshaft. You can check the fi ller pipe when the engine is running with a pressure indicator.

A part from the fi ller pipe the pushrod tube seals often cause oil spill. After a while the seals dry out

and they loose there fl exibility and harden so they lose their sealing capacities. Replacing the seals is a precise job. DIY is possible but you need some knowledge about 2CV engines and you’ll need a proper torque wrench. We supply special Viton push rod seals that last longer than the original seals due to the special material composition. So this keeps your engine free of oil spill for a long time.

After replacing your pushrod tube seals or when you check your valve clearance it is recommended to

replace your rocker cover seals. When you fi t the new seals usually you apply liquid gasket inside the rocker cover to keep the seal on its place. The disadvantage of this method is that you need to remove the old liquid gasket remaining from the rocker covers

in order to fi t a new one. Burton Car Company developed a new type rocker cover seal which you can fi t without liquid gasket and can even be re-used! See page 7 for this product.

The 2CV engine suffers from the same wear and tear like every other engine. With a lot of mileage on it

this often results in loss of compression, camshaft wear and tear, high oil consumption or sometimes worn crankshaft bearings. Overhauling is then inevitable to get the engine back in good condition. When an engine gets an overhaul treatment it is been taking a part completely. Wear and tear parts like pistons, cylinders, valve guides and bearings will be replaced. The crankcase gets an inspection and than a thorough cleaning which is very important for the lifetime of the engine. Remaining of dirt and fi llings will work as a sanding paste and strongly shorten the engine life time. After

the cleaning process a specialist gives the crankcase another inspection this time to check on cracks, broken pieces and other damages.

The crankshaft of the 2CV engine exists out of three larger parts. In the overhaul process the crankshaft

is being split with a special mechanical press and the parts get a pre cleaning. After this the parts of the crankshaft get an inspection on cracks and damages. The engineer then grinds the big-end bearing tap and the base bearing tap clean. The increased tolerance will be compensated with a excess bearing. After the grind process the parts of the crankshaft get a thorough cleaning and can be rebuilt again. When the crankshaft is rebuilt it gets a fi nal inspection where we can check the maximum whip. If the crankshaft meets the requirements a new crankshaft pilot-bearing and seal ring is fi tted. The crankshaft is then ready for a new life!

The camshaft, pistons and cylinders aren’t being overhauled by Burton Car Company because we

replace these parts for new ones. The cylinder heads get new valves, valve guides and seals. The valve seats get an extremely precise treatment to reseat them according to factory specifi cations. Parts like for example the oil pump and oil pressure valve get an inspection if they meet the requirements or if they need to be replaced. The oil cooler and oil lines are always renewed.

After all the parts have been prepared and ready for a new engine life the rebuilding process can start. In

this process we constantly stick to the factory specifi cations. All the Burton 2CV Parts engines are fi tted with our Viton pushrod tube seals and the special rocker cover seals. After the engine is rebuilt its put on a special engine test facility. During the testing procedure a specialist checks at various engine revs the oil pressure and according to the exhaust temperature we can see if both cylinders give the same amount of power. If the engine meets our requirements and is free of oil spill and no detrimental noises can be detected the engine is disconnected from the engine stand to cool down. Finally we check again the valve clearance and the torque of the cylinder bolts. The engine oil is drained and the engine packed and ready to be shipped all over the World!

When you would buy an overhauled engine you have to exchange your old engine (same model).

Many 2CV drivers are well known with the fact that a 2CV sometimes has problems with the idle run. The idle run is unstable, fi nding diffi culties with

adjusting the CO-percentage and the engine makes 3000 to 4000 revs after you let the throttle go. These symptoms make driving unpleasant, unsafe and are also bad for the environment. So it’s time to check the conditions of your carburettor.

Carburettor

Many carburettors look just fi ne from the outside but are worn inside because of its age and high

mileage. Both throttle axles and especially of the fi rst kick get worn. However it’s not the axle itself that gets worn but it’s the housing. The axle is housed in aluminium which is much softer then the axle itself. Engine vibrations and a lifetime of usage will lead to more and more play on the axles. The housing of the axle will eventually be oval and uneven inside. So every time when you release the throttle the axle sits in a different position in idle run. This result in the valves not closing properly and an unstable idle run. You can check your carburettor by removing the throttle spring that runs from the fan house to the carburettor. By pushing the throttle valve axle downwards and pulling it upwards you shouldn’t feel any play. You can check it also when the engine is running and if then the idle run changes the carburettor has too much play. When you check your carburettor please also check the torsion springs, because they are often broken. A broken torsion spring can be dangerous for the engine.

Overhauling

At the Burton Car Company we have an affordable solution for your problems. The carburettor is

dismantled and after inspection gets a thorough cleaning with a jet blaster that uses crushed nut shells instead of sand in order to preserve the aluminum housing. Then the carburettor gets an ultrasonic cleaning. This is the best solution to get the carburettor again in perfect condition. After the cleaning a second inspection follows and the housings which are worn will get a custom-made nylon bush placed in. After fi tting these nylon bushes the play will be gone and be within Fabrication tolerances.

The carburettor is then ready for rebuilt. We replace the following parts: fl oat needle valve, acceleration

pump membrane, torsion springs and all of the gaskets and rubber seals. As part of the overhauling we also adjust the fl oat height and jets to the original setting. Please take note that when you fi t the carburettor on an engine with a “Big Bore kit” and/or “Powertube” the jets need to have a different setting. To achieve the perfect jet setting it’s best

to do a power test day with the car. The car will be tested at full power and according to the power and emissions the jets will be swapped until the right setting is achieved. A couple of times a year the Burton Owners Club organises a power test day in the Netherlands. On average a power achievement of 15% is obtained! On terms that your engine is in good health off course. So check your compression and correct settings of the valves and ignition.

Our carburettors are being overhauled on exchange basis. So you hand in your old carburettor and for € 199,- you receive an overhauled one in return.

There aren’t many differences between the gearboxes that were fi tted by Citroën in the last years of the 2CV production. Gear reductions in cars with 602cc engines are almost similar. The most important difference between older gearbox types and the ones used after 1982 is that the earlier models are equipped with drum brakes. Although not directly related to the gearbox itself, it makes a vital difference.

Please take attention to the following when checking out a gearbox:• When shifting gear, no creaking sounds are to be heard. The synchromesh rings of the second

and third gear are fi rst to wear out, resulting in a “sawing” kind of noise when engaging either one of these gears.

• The fi rst gear is not synchronised and will therefore always be noisy when engaged, unless the car is at a complete stand still.

• Driving a 2CV or Dyane in reverse with too much speed may result in locking up the gearbox. The car will not move again until the lid of the gearbox is opened by a 2CV specialist to fi x this problem.

A nostalgic looking sportscar for daily useBecause the Burton is based on the chassis of the Citroën 2CV the fuel consumptions and costs

of parts, tax and maintenance are low. The mechanical components of the 2CV are ideally suited for the Burton, because they are simple but effective. Citroën has built more than 5 million 2CV’s in 45 years. Because of that, the 2CV is incredibly well thought and engineered. Ride and handling are a revelation to people who have never driven a 2CV. Weight is down by a third and makes acceleration, roadholding and braking distances even better.

SpaceLuggage space for the Burton is large. In the boot you have access to a space of 610 litres. Under

the bonnet there is another 100 litres available for storing for example tools or a tent.

WintersportsThe hardtop and heater make the Burton ready for the winter. Gullwing doors ensure easy access

and can be removed easily and stored in the boot. The car has been tested in snowy conditions.

Unique BurtonThe possibilities of giving the car it’s own look, according to your taste, are limitless. The colour

is moulded into the body and can be any RAL colour you wish. There is a choice between normal wings or cyclewings, full windscreen or aeroscreens, 2CV dashboard or Burton gauges. You can have standard 2CV wheels or the special Burton wheels, reminiscent of Bugatti wheels of the 20’s and 30’s. Interior and body can be made to your taste and budget. PerformanceThe performance of a Burton is as can be expected from a sportscar. Even with the standard 2CV

engine, the car is quick. This is due to the low weight, aerodynamic shape and good handling of the car. Fitting bigger cylinders, racing camshaft, electronic ignition and lightened fl ywheel, can improve performance further.

A soft-top makes your Burton perfectly usable for the summer season. No more wet suit, and always ready for use! The soft top can be stored folded behind your seat, or in the trunk of your Burton. The roof is fi tted in no time so you can continue your trip dry and warm.

There are two different versions of the soft-top, a high version and a low version. The low version gives a person of normal height in combination with a 2CV backseat enough head room. If you mount cobra seats or you are above average height, the high version will be the best version. Both versions are available in different colors.

In order to enjoy your Burton in all seasons we have developed a Hard-top. With its gull-wing doors it transforms the Burton from a cool cabriolet to a fl ashing coupe. There are now 3 ways to drive: Cabriolet, Targa or completely closed. Taking out the doors only takes a few minutes and also the rear part can be removed easily.

BURTON JACKThe standard jack of a 2CV doesn’t fi t the Burton. You can not jack up

the car under the body, the polyester will crack. Therefore we developed a special tool to only lift the suspension arm.

Roll the car onto the special block that comes with the jack. Then place the jack under the arm, using the cut-away which says ' front' or 'back', depending on which wheel you are changing. Roll the car forwards or backwards to lift the suspension-arm with the wheel from the ground.

The block is only used when the tyre is fully defl ated, to correct the height of the tyre. When changing an infl ated tyre, the jack can be used straight away without rolling the car onto the block.

TRIANGLEA triangle is used to tow a car without a second driver. The

triangel is fi xed on the two tow-points on the front of the car, and is then connected to the towing vehicle with a trailer-connection. The front wheels will automatically follow the towing vehicle.

Make sure your chassis is ready to connect a triangel. Some galvanized chassis' don't have two towing-points, and on other (imitation)chassis are the eyes not properly welded (has to be welded well through). You also have to check the tracking of the car you tow with the triangle. Use of this towing equipment is always on your own risk.

It is part of the same family as it’s petrol burning brother, but there’s one major difference: the fuel it uses. The new Burton Electric is currently the World’s most sustainable sportscar.Built on the chassis of a Citroën 2CV, the Burton is equipped with 31 lithium-iron-phosphate batteries that provide a safe storage of energy.One of the unique qualities of the Burton Electric is that it remains a very light car, weighing only 740 kg. Especially for electric cars is true to say that each additional kilo goes at the expense of range, the distance that can be driven on a full charge. We have a conversion kit available, that will let everyone build or convert their fuel burning Burton into a Burton Electric.As with the existing Burton, the Burton Electric can accessorized to taste and budget.

Building your own sportscar is an adventure many people dream of when they are young. The courage, money and decision-making authority were not there when you were young. Now that has changed. Now you decide about the pleasures in life. You don’t have to be an experienced mechanic to build a Burton. All it takes is a little common sense, the right motivation, some standard tool equipment and the builder’s manual. Building a Burton takes about 150 hours, depending on your skill and experience, the condition of the donor vehicle, the number of accessories and the level of fi nishing. During the building process, Burton Car Company can give you advice, tips and parts, as you need them.

The fi rst phase is the dismantling of the donor vehicle and preparing the rolling chassis. After that, fi tting the body, fi nishing the interior and fi nishing the car.

Do everything yourselfThis means you buy a donor-2CV and dismantle it yourself. You can search for a donor car on sites as Ebay, or contact

Burton Car Company as we try to have donorcars on stock. After breaking down the donor vehicle you can start building the rolling chassis of the Burton. In 95% of the cases the original chassis is rusty and needs to be replaced. New chassis are available.

After building the rolling chassis, you can pick up the Burton-body. At this point you have to think about the options and accesories you want to put on your car. The parts for completing the body are sold in packages. See our pricelist. Put the body

onto the chassis and complete it with what’s necessary and what’s desirable.

Buy the rolling chassisIn this case you don’t buy a donor car. Burton Car Company supplies you with a complete overhauled rolling chassis with

license-papers. You can start right away with building the Burton body.

The parts you could use from a donor-2CV for the Burton are included with rolling chassis. For example, the rear couch of the 2CV and rims of the 2CV.

OccasionWe always have several complete used cars on stock. Look in the ‘Occasion’ section of our website for a actual

collection.

Built to order:You can have your Burton (or a part of it) built to your specifi cation.

There are many options and accesories to consider, which makes is extra fun to compile the car! Experienced mechanics, specialised in building Burtons, take care of the fi t and fi nish of your car just the way you want it!

TSL oil additive is an oil product which is built out of 11 active components based on a unique and exclusive lubricating oil technology.

TSL is the scientifi c solution for lubrication in places where traditional and synthetic lubricants fail. The combination of both active and passive components in TSL will signifi cantly improve the operation of your oil.

Originally developed for extreme applications shows that TSL also gives unique properties to the

traditional lubricants under normal conditions where the friction is reduced resulting in less wear and a signifi cant lower operating temperature (especially in extreme conditions), it saves energy, and extended / maintain the quality of oil.
