Mechanical Energy• This is energy due to an objects motion and position.
• Mechanical energy includes kinetic and potential energy.
• An object has mechanical energy under two conditions-1. it is in motion2. If it is relative to a zero potential energy position

Mechanical Energy Continued• Kinetic and Potential EnergyKinetic energy is energy due to motionPotential energy is stored energy in a given position
Examples of mechanical energy:1.Moving car 4. Book on a shelf2.Baseball in motion 5. A weight over your head3.A sling shot drawn back 6. A flying kite

Mechanical Energy Quiz1. Is mechanical energy the energy produced from movement?
2. Is a car sitting at a red light an example of mechanical energy?
YES NO

Electrical Energy• Electrical energy comes from any energy put out by electricity.
• This is most common and most useful type of energy. If a device has a power cord or batteries it produces electrical energy.
• The energy itself is not visible, but the device is visible.• Examples of electrical energy are-Light bulb power cord
Batteries in a flashlight hair dryer
Toaster microwave

Electrical Energy Quiz1. Does a lamp produce electrical energy?
2. Which device does not produce electrical energy?A. Frying panB. FlashlightC. Hair dryer
YES NO

Thermal Energy• Thermal energy relies on the temperature of an object; the energy
produced by heat.
• It is not the most useful form of energy because objects do not easily remain heated.
• It differs from radiation, because radiation is energy being reflected or absorbed due to heat. Thermal energy is the energy made from heat.
CONTINUE
Thermal Energy ExamplesFour common examples of thermal energy are-1. A pot of boiling water2. Burning coals in a grill3. The microwaves in a microwave oven4. A geyser; a spring ejecting water due to heat

Thermal Energy Quiz1. Is thermal energy the same as radiation?
2. Which of the following is an example of thermal energy?A. The sunB. Pot of boiling waterC. Hair dryer
YES NO

Sound Energy• Sound energy is the energy produced from the vibrations of a
disturbance of matter.
• Sound actually travels by waves. Sound must travel through a medium; solid, liquid, or gas.
• Sound produces the least amount of energy. The waves are not strong enough to carry very much energy.
CONTINUE
Sound Energy ExamplesSome common examples of sound energy are-
• Sound produced by a guitar string• The sound from drums being hit• A dog barking• Your stereo blasting• Aircraft• A sports car roaring down the street
All of these cause vibrations and transfer energy that you can hear.
CONTINUE
Sound Energy Quiz1. Is sound energy the best form of energy available to us?
A. No, it is better to see energy rather than hear it.B. Yes, we learn more by hearing.C. No, sound waves transfer the least amount of energy making sound energy
least efficient.
2. Sound energy is the energy produced by a disturbance of matter.True or False.

Radiant Energy• Radiant energy is the energy from electromagnetic waves.
• It is emitted or absorbed by a source/object into the environment. There are a large number of examples or sources of radiant energy, the main thing is heat emitted or absorbed by an object. It is one of the most common forms of energy.
• Radiation is the only form of energy that travels purely through space.
• It can be visible or invisible.
CONTINUE
Radiant Energy Examples• A campfire• Solar energy• The sunlight (ultraviolet rays and infrared radiation)• X-rays• Radio waves• Microwaves • Heat emitted off hot cars or bricks• Light and heat given off by a light bulb

Radiant Energy Quiz1. Is radiant energy a common source of energy?
2. Which of the following is an example of radiant energy?A. A car giving off heatB. A furnace heating your houseC. The sun burning your skinD. All of the above
YES NO
