Momentive has focused on making strategic investments in its manufacturing operations in China, India, Brazil, and Belgium to better serve its customers outside North America. Urethane additives, such as surfactants, catalysts, and process modifiers, are critical components in polyurethane foam production. “Our global infrastructure for polyurethane additives has never been stronger,” said Tony Lanchak, Global Business Director – UA, Momentive Performance Materials. “We are well positioned to take on growing demand around the world, as an industry leader in the markets we serve. With R&D and manufacturing capabilities in key regions and critical improvements in processes to make effective use of this new global capacity, we will continue to do what we do best – expanding our product offering and working closely with customers to address their specialized needs.” In addition to upgrading a state-of- the-art sales, inventory, operations, and planning system, Momentive has made several strategic investments focused on broadening global capacity in its urethane additives business. In China, it has completed the expansion that enables increased urethane additive finished goods capacity at its Nantong plant. Momentive is now also producing key intermediates in Nantong, which will enable the use of local raw materials. In India, urethane additive production has been phased in at a newly expanded facility for manufacturing and application development in Chennai. In Brazil, an upgraded manufacturing facility enables production of urethane additive finished goods, supported by a state- of-the-art application development center, to complement existing production facilities in Itatiba. In Belgium, added capacity and improved processes at the Antwerp facility have resulted in a 20% increase in production. Over the past 50 years, Momentive’s urethane additives business has introduced a steady stream of new products that have helped revolutionize polyurethane foam production. These market firsts include the development of the first non-hydrolysable silicone surfactant, the first flame retardant (FR) surfactant and the first high resilience silicone surfactant. Momentive’s Niax brand is one of the most enduring and respected brands in the global polyurethane industry. But in a manufacturing process, foam can cause vessels to overflow, increasing maintenance costs and processing time, and reducing production efficiency. “Controlling foam promotes smooth, efficient operations, maximizes return on investment in processing equipment and raw materials, and helps in the production of consistent, high-quality products,” said Don Buchalski, global product market manager for the Xiameter brand from Dow Corning. There are two ways to control foam: destroy it with a defoamer, or prevent it with an antifoam product. In either case, products such as Xiameter silicone foam control agents penetrate a foam bubble wall, spreading the liquid-gas interface, and causing the bubble wall to become unstable and collapse. This can reduce production costs and improve overall efficiency in many industries – from food processing to general industrial manufacturing. Antifoam products should be formulated to have minimal impact – other than foam suppression. Generally, the smaller the amount of antifoam required, the less impact there will be on the product. This is one reason why silicone products are frequently the first choice for combating foam in industrial processes. They are efficient, long- lasting, and can be used as defoamers and antifoams. Xiameter brand silicone foam control agents are available as fluids, compounds and emulsions, and powders, and are suitable for use in both aqueous and non-aqueous systems.
