INTRODUCTION TO BURR
An undesirable projection of material formed as the
result of plastic flow from a cutting or shearing operation
[Dornfeld].
A work piece edge with overhang [DIN].

PROBLEMS WITH BURR
Decrease in the fit and ease of assembly of parts.
Damage dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
Increase in the cost and time of production due to
deburring.
Chance of injury to workers and consumers.
Poor machineability.

CLASSIFICATION OF BURR
Burr can be classified in various ways.
According to GILLESPIE [1998] Burr can be classified as Poisson Burr, Tear
Burr and Rollover Burr and Cut-off Burr.

According to the cutting process applied Burr can be Turning, Drilling, Grinding
and Milling Burr.
CHERN [1993] classified Milling Burr as (1) the knife-type burr; (2) the wave-type
burr; (3) the curl-type burr; (4) the edge breakout; and (5) the secondary burr.
HASIMURA AND DORNFELD [1999] Classified Burr according to its location.

KIM AND DORNFELD [2001] categorized Drilling Burr as Uniform Burr Type I,
Uniform Burr Type II, Uniform Burr Type with Drill Cap, Crown Burr, Transient Burr.
Development of Drilling Burr occurs in five stages.

BURR MINIMISATION STRATEGIES
To minimize Burr formation measurement of Burr is necessary. Fingernail test is
one of the most used Burr measuring method.
A well maintained process chain can help in reduction of Burr formation.

PROCESSES REQUIRED FOR REDUCTION OF BURR FORMATION
Tool and tooling : tool geometry alteration, proper tool material selection
corresponding to the work material, coating technology, tool size.
C oolant : application method, coolant media, application location.
W ork material
:replace work material for less burr or preferable burr type.
W ork geometry : design change (e.g. chamfer).
P rocess parameters: proper combination of cutting speed, feed, etc.
P rocess sequencing
:
order of processes.
Tool path planning.

DEBURRING PROCESSES
Deburring can be done through various ways such as:
Mechanical deburring operations,
Thermal deburring operations,
Chemical deburring operations,
Electrical deburring operations.
Mechanical Deburring could be Cutting based, Mass finishing and other ways
such as Abrasive jet, Cryogenic Abrasive jet, Water jet etc.
Cutting Based:
Sanding, Mechanical Cutting,
Vibratory Conveyor,
Manual Deburring,
Power Brushing.

CONCLUSION
As Deburring is a non value added process it is better to minimize Burr than to
Deburr it.
It was found that Burrs are formed due to various factors including geometry of
the job, tool exit angle, environmental condition, speed, feed, depth of cut, tool
path planning etc so during machining the above mentioned conditions should bekept in mind.
But it should be kept in mind that for better finishing and job handling if
Deburring is needed it should be done.
Now many types of highly effective Deburring processes are available by which
burrs can be removed very easily.
So, above all our aim should be to overcome the difficulties arising due to burr
formation and to minimize the burr formation and to use deburring when needed.
