    TEASER

INT. MIAMI CONDO - LIVING ROOM - DAY

This condo would be gorgeous if it werent disheveled from arecent search. Someone inserts a key into the lock outside.

With a sharp CRACK-- the handle turns.

MICHAEL opens the door and pockets a BUMP KEY. He ducksthrough POLICE TAPE crisscrossing the doorway and enters.

Michael begins methodically searching the living room.

MICHAEL (V.O.)Hunting for information at asecured crime scene can be hit ormiss. If the authorities have areason to conduct a really thoroughsearch-- investigating a possible

murder, for example-- youreprobably out of luck. When itsyour only lead? You do it anyway.

Michaels PHONE RINGS. He looks at the ID, then answers.

    MICHAEL (CONTD)Hi, Fi.

FIONA (O.S.)So, what are you planning to do?

    MICHAEL

I was thinking about getting somedrapes for the loft. They saytimeless neutrals are in again.

FIONA (O.S.)Be serious, Michael. You mightwant to consider getting out oftown for a while. We dont knowanything about these people...beyond the fact that they threwyour only CIA contact off abuilding right after he called to

warn you about them.Michael heads into the hallway.

    DIEGOS BATHROOM

Michael enters the bathroom. The lid is off the toilet tank.

    MICHAEL(he doesnt believe this)

The police ruled Diegos death asuicide.

    FIONA (O.S.)

You think sticking your head in thesand is the best play here?

Michael notices SOMETHING WEDGED BEHIND THE MIRROR. He movesthe toilet lid for better access-- it CLANGS on the tile.

FIONA (O.S.) (CONTD)What was that sound?

    MICHAELHm?

Michael fishes a LEATHERMAN out of his pocket and unscrews

the mirror from the wall with the FLATHEAD TOOL.

FIONA (O.S.)Please tell me youre not searchingDiegos apartment right now.

Michael eases the mirror away from the wall. A SLIP OFFOLDED PAPER falls into his hand.

    FIONA (O.S.) (CONTD)(resigned)

Of course you are. Put Sam on.

MICHAELSam had a prior engagement. Immeeting up with him after.

Michael unfolds the paper. Its a line of scribbled numbers.

MICHAEL (CONTD)I have to go, Fi. Ill tell Samyou say hi.

EXT. MIAMI CONDO COMPLEX - MOMENTS LATER

The condo complex faces a ROW OF POSH CAFES-- its a swankydowntown neighborhood.

Michael exits the complex and spots SAM sitting in a SNAZZYNEW CAR. Sam gestures at the car grandly.

SAMWhat can I say? I didnt know if Ihad it in me, but I think I mightbe ready for a commitment.

    MICHAEL

This is a big step for you.

SAMLets be clear, Im not rushinginto anything. This is strictly alease arrangement. But who knowswhat tomorrow may bring?

A focused 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL (LADAN) crashes into Michael. Sheshoulders past him without a word--

SAM (CONTD)Hey, how about an apology?

Michael turns after her, irritated-- and notices the flash ofmetal. Ladan HIDES A GUN inside her pink hoodie.

Michaels irritation evaporates. He tracks the girls eye-line. Shes staring across the street at--

A REEDY MAN (MARTIN REEVES, 30s) in an expensive suitapproaching a table--

Where A HIGH-POWERED EXECUTIVE in his early 40s (well cometo know him as JACQUES GOSSARD later) drinks his coffee.

Gossard, flanked by BODYGUARDS, frowns at Reevess arrival.Michael spots the bodyguards CONCEALED SHOULDER HOLSTERS.

MICHAEL (V.O.)Professional bodyguards come in twoflavors. The kind you hire forshow, and the kind that actuallymean business.

A TITLE slides onto screen over the bodyguards: BODYGUARDS /THE KIND THAT ACTUALLY MEAN BUSINESS

MICHAEL (VO (CONTD)Threaten their client and theyrelicensed to respond with lethalforce. As a spy you get a lot of

practice IDing the people who knowhow to handle a weapon... and the

    people who dont.

Ladan stops on the sidewalk, scanning the street for a breakin traffic. She looks tense, scared... and determined.

Michael moves-- he grabs Ladan and disarms her, then shovesher into the back of Sams car.

    INT. SAMS CAR - CONTINUOUS

Sam glances into the review mirror as Michael jumps in beside

Ladan and slams the door shut.

LADANGet your hands off of me, youpsycho perve!

    SAMUh... Mike?

    MICHAELDrive.

    EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS

Sam floors it and pulls a U-turn into traffic.

INT. SAMS CAR - MOMENTS LATER

Michael flips the gun open. Its empty.

MICHAELHard to shoot someone with an emptygun. What was your plan, exactly?

Ladan claws at Michaels hand, panicking.

MICHAEL (CONTD)Those men you were headed for...

    LADANLet me out of here!

Ladan starts kicking the back of Sams seat.

    SAMThats Italian leather, Mike!

Ladan fishes PEPPER SPRAY out of her jeans pocket--

    MICHAELDont do that.

TOO LATE. The stream of pepper spray jets into the car.

EXT. PARKING LOT - MOMENTS LATER

Sam jumps out of the drivers side, gasping for air.

SAMCome on! The ink on my lease isnteven dry!

Michael drags Ladan out of the back seat. Shes coughing andrubbing at her face.

Sam sees Michael-- eyes shut and nearly doubled over--hanging onto Ladans arm.

SAM (CONTD)Oh, man, you dont look so good.

    MICHAEL(hoarse)

Where are we, Sam? Do you see anydrug stores?

    SAM(getting it)

Yeah, hang on. Ill be right back.

Sam runs toward a DRUGSTORE, leaving Michael and Ladanstanding blindly in the parking lot.

    LADANMy eyes...

MICHAELDont try to open them, youll make

    it worse.

    LADANIt kills!

    MICHAELYep.

MICHAEL (V.O.) (CONTD)Pepper spray is an inflammatoryagent designed to force youropponents eyes shut and slow them

down by making it difficult forthem to breathe. If you firepepper spray in an enclosedenvironment like, say, a car, youll end up almost asincapacitated as the guy yourefighting. Water wont help youhere. What you need is somealuminum hydroxide.

Sam returns with two big bottles of MAALOX and some water.

    SAMGot it, Mikey. Here.

    MICHAEL

    Help the girl.

Michael pours half the Maalox over his face. He splasheswater into the Maalox bottle, shakes it, and pours theresulting mixture into his eyes.

MICHAEL (V.O.) (CONTD)A solution of one part Maalox andone part water will neutralize the

pepper spray and relieve thesymptoms so you can see again.

    Michael breathes out in relief.

He glances over at Ladan. They are both drenched in milky-white liquid.

MICHAEL (CONTD)No more pepper spray. Deal?

Ladans lip quivers but she glares at Michael, stubborn.

    LADANWhy did you stop me?

    MICHAEL

That man you were heading for wassurrounded by armed guards. If Ihadnt stopped you, youd be deador seriously wounded right now.

LADANMaybe then someone would take meseriously and do something!

    MICHAELDo something about what?

Ladans jaw sets.Michael looks at Sam. Sam throws his hands up, wanting nopart of this. Michael considers Ladan.

MICHAELYou said Reeves hired Asal? Whatdid she do for him?

LADANI dont know. Some translationthing. I didnt catch a lot of thedetails. Asal made me wait in adifferent booth, and it wasntexactly a riveting conversation.

Michael glances at Fiona, not much to go on. Fiona promptshim with a look. He turns back to Ladan.

MICHAELOkay, shes a translator. Whatlanguages does she speak?

LADANFarsi, Turkish, Arabic. She wantsto work for the State Departmentwhen she graduates.

    Sam enters the loft.

Sam shoots Ladan a dark look. She crosses her arms.

SAMHey, all Im saying is peopleunderestimate the destructive powerof the angsty teenage girl.

LADANSo how was I supposed to deal withgetting thrown in the back of acar? Thats, like, exactly whatthey make pepper spray for in thefirst place!

A TITLE slides over Ladans face: LADAN / ANGSTY TEENAGEGIRL.

Sam opens his mouth to speak--

    FIONASam.

Sam reads Fionas expression: cool it.

    FIONA (CONTD)(to Ladan)

I know it might be hard to believe,

after he pulled you off thesidewalk and let you pepper sprayhim... But Michaels actuallypretty good at helping people withproblems like yours.

Fiona flashes a winning smile at Michael. This is clearlynot up for discussion.

Michael forces a smile. Sam, seeing this, sags a little.

    ACT ONE

EXT. MODEST APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY

Sam leans casually against the apartments entrance, talkingon his cell phone. Michael pulls up and joins him.

    SAM(into phone)

Police checked out Ladans story, but according to my buddy, thisMartin Reeves guy is clean.Finished a six-year civiliancontract in Afghanistan a few yearsback. Since then hes been doinglocal jobs.

    MICHAELSecurity?

    SAMTruck driver.

Michael looks surprised. They head into the complex.

SAM (CONTD)I hate to state the obvious, butthe only reason we think Asal isconnected to Reeves is becauseLittle Sister said so.

MICHAELWe should talk to the guy. IfLadans right, Asal called him justbefore she went missing.

SAMAssuming shes missing and not justenjoying a little Ladan-freedowntime. Which, personally, Idfind completely understandable.

    (off Michaels look)

But we should talk to the guy. They stop in front of a door. Michael knocks. After amoment, the door opens, revealing Martin Reeves.

MICHAELMartin Reeves. Were here aboutAsal Jalili.

REEVES(with sudden hope)You have another job for me?

Reeves, dressed in the expensive suit we saw earlier, glaresat them, waiting for their next move.

SAMNice suit for a truck driver.

REEVESIm not going to drive a truckforever.

MICHAELWhyd you hire Asal? Whats shetranslating for you?

(Reeves starts to object)A witness saw you two in the cafe.

Reevess eyes flick from Sam back to Michael. Nervous.

REEVESIts not illegal to hire someone.

MICHAELExcept now shes missing, and youwere the last person seen with her.

REEVESYeah, but... I mean, shes fine.

MICHAELSo you know where she is?

    Reeves looks caught.

REEVESI just made the contact. He neededsomeone for some discreet work, offthe books, you know? Shell turnup when the jobs finished.

MICHAELWho paid you to hire her, Martin?

REEVESLook, he was doing me a favor. Idid some driving for him inAfghanistan. He said if I everneeded anything back home to lookhim up. Jobs have been thin--

SAMAfghanistan. You worked for G.L.E.over there, right?

    REEVES(suddenly scared)

I think Im done talking to you.

Sam shoots Michael a sharp look... he knows something.

EXT. MODEST APARTMENT COMPLEX - MOMENTS LATER

Sam and Michael hurry back toward the street.

SAMG.L.E. handles a lot of military

    contracts. These guys haveresources, Mike.

MICHAELSo why go all back-alley to recruita translator for a job like this?

SAMMaybe Ladan has a reason to beworried after all.

(speaking of worried...)Be careful if you go digging into

    G.L.E., Mike.MICHAEL

Theyre not the only ones who canhandle things discretely.

Barry shrugs and hands over a thin folder.

BARRY99.99% of G.L.E.s business ismilitary. Contracts cover thingslike security, interpretation andtranslation, battlefield EMTservices, and my personal fav: K-9explosive detector dog handling. Alesser man may have missed theother point oh one percent.

MICHAELThats why I come to you.

BARRYTurns out the head of operationsfor G.L.E.s Miami branch has alittle something going on the side.

    MICHAELYou dont say.

Barry taps the folder. Michael opens it and finds a PHOTO OF

    JACQUES GOSSARD flanked by BODYGUARDS.

BARRYMeet Jacques Gossard. Someone justdeposited 1.2 million dollars intoan offshore account of his. Therehave been four deposits over thelast eight years, each for around amillion bucks.

Michael and Sam finish lunch while examining Barrys work.

Sam studies the PHOTO OF JACQUES GOSSARD.

MICHAELWhat could Gossard be up to thatrequires a translator and pays 1.2million dollars?

SAMAssuming Gossards the one hiringthe translators... how aboutblackmail? Client comes in withsensitive information, Gossard seesan opportunity to make an easy

    buck.

MICHAELFour times in eight years? Risky.

SAMGo around blackmailing people andyoure going to make some enemies.Might explain why the guy travelseverywhere with an armed escort.

    MICHAEL

But it doesnt explain why hedneed Asal when hes got an officefull of translators whove signedNDAs on his payroll.

SAMBad news, Mike. When Gossardworked in Afghanistan, he oversawtranslation services. One of hisguys disappeared.

MICHAELLet me guess: a few days before thefirst deposit into Gossardsoffshore account.

SAMIt gets worse. Remember thebreakthrough the Iranians hadenriching uranium around that time?IAEA got a hold of some of theirresearch. Turns out it was ourresearch. CIA IDed the missingtranslator by his handwriting.

They figured he was snatched to dothe job, and then...

Sam gestures-- Killed. Michael frowns, thinking.

MICHAELDo you know anyone who can puttogether a dummy document thatcould pass for top secret? Imthinking military, TS/SCI.

SAMI know a guy. He can get you

    FIONADisposable...?

    MICHAEL

When Asal finishes her translation, theyll kill her and sell the inteloverseas.

FIONAWhy go to all that trouble? Whynot just hire someone they trust todo the translation?

    IN THE ROOM
