BURGUNDY 2014 En Primeur

Vintages can be characterised as early or late, hot or cool, of greater or lesser quality. Some are hailed by storm clouds, others hailed by the press. In 2014, Burgundy experienced a relatively cool summer and a relatively early harvest, but without extremes in either case. It did get hailed on from above, and it will be hailed from below as a superb vintage for white wines and a very good one for reds. Volumes available are usually no less than for 2013, sometimes more; however, recent years have all been below the previous average in crop size and this has fuelled increased prices at the cellar door. Fortunately the exchange rate helps us this year. We are delighted to confirm that almost all of the wines offered here are priced below the equivalent 2013, which in turn were less expensive than for 2012. Any prices marked ‘POA’ will be available when the offer goes live on 6th January. As for last year, every producer receives a double introduction: the first part, in italics, is an overview which may be useful to those coming to our producers for the first time; the second part offers a brief commentary on the 2014 vintage. There are tasting notes on all wines in the offer this year but for reasons of space, many generic Bourgognes have been omitted and will be presented in a separate list available at bbr.com/burgundy2014.

New producers We welcome to these pages for the first time Le Domaine d’Henri’s Chablis, comprising two stunning cuvées from the Fourchaume vineyard, and an under-the-radar gem from Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Guyon. The vintage A detailed report on growing conditions throughout the season is available at bbr.com/vintagereport. A beautiful spring culminated in a mostly very successful flowering and all was set fair for a happy, healthy crop – until, for the third year in a row, hail ruined the hopes of vignerons in Meursault, Volnay, Pommard and Beaune, thanks to one massive storm on 28th June. A cool summer followed, which explains the freshness in the wines, and then the sunny skies returned in September for harvest, which began in the second week. This year, there was no panic to pick, and the grapes looked happy and healthy after all. So did the vignerons. There was, however, one fruit fly in the ointment, Drosophila Suzukii. This pugnacious insect can pierce healthy berries and introduce acid rot. It affected Pinot rather than Chardonnay, in certain localities, mostly close to houses and orchards in the Côte de Nuits. Growers needed to react intelligently to make sure none of this acid rot made it out of the vineyard or past the sorting table. There is no evidence of it affecting the wines which we tasted.

NWhite wines This is the most consistently fine vintage that we can remember. To speak of a ‘great’ vintage would suggest incredible concentration and exceptional longevity, which is why ‘fine’ is a more apt descriptor. The wines have fruit and flesh; they have precision, minerality and good acidity. The classic character is of fresh white fruit rather than super-ripe yellow fruit. They taste in perfect balance. They will be accessible early and they will keep well. Results are consistent from Mâcon to Chablis, and pretty much from one domaine to another. All boxes are ticked! Red wines Many of the above comments can be applied to the reds as well, but they are not quite so consistent. There are some first-rate reds in the Côte de Beaune, but others show the effect of hail. The Côte de Nuits has fared rather better, except for occasional examples of overly high yields resulting in wines which lack concentration. However, the majority of wines are fruit-forward, balanced, fresh-tasting, elegant and precise, accessible and safe for medium-term ageing. The 2014 vintage will not gain mythical status, but it will offer a huge amount of pleasure.

Samuel Billaud domaine Louis Michel & Fils

The brilliantly talented Samuel Billaud was finding family politics hard going, so he founded his own wine label in Chablis separate from Domaine Billaud-Simon. However with the sale of Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel has got back a proportion of the vineyards for himself. Whether from domaine sources or purchased grapes, Samuel Billaud’s wines demonstrate his exceptional talent.

Though the viticulture predates the return of his vineyards, Samuel got into his own vines just before the harvest and has thus been able to vinify a larger range than before. So when we visited he was much happier all round, especially with an excellent 2014 harvest in his cellar: healthy grapes and correct yields between 40hl/ha for Grand Cru and 55hl/ha for Chablis.

The domaine, based in the heart of Chablis, dates back to 1850. Prior to 1970 all the wines were fermented and matured in old oak barrels. By 1980 the old oak had been thrown out and the domaine had switched entirely to stainless steel. Today the domaine is run by Jean-Loup Michel and his nephew Guillaume Michel. Domaine Louis Michel owns 25ha of vineyards, mainly Premier and Grand Cru, and is the byword for unoaked Chablis.

This is an outstanding range of wines from Guillaume, the best we have seen here. The season got off to a difficult start with a touch of frost followed by a Whitsun heatwave, which restricted the flowering. After a normal June, a very wet July encumbered work in the vineyards, then the weather cheered up at the end of the season. The Michels harvested from 17th September through to 1st October because of different ripeness levels, stopping in the middle. Clearly this attention to detail paid off in the end. The wines are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts.

Old vines from Les Cartes vineyard give the flesh, while Pargues and Chatelots offer dynamic tension with a great core of energy. Pale primrose in colour, with a truly beautiful nose, classical yet full of fruit, this is crystalline, pure, delicious Chablis, with a lovely dancing finish. Drink 2016-2020.

A product of 70-plus-year-old vines inherited from Samuel’s great grandmother. This has a brilliant, clear, pale primrose appearance; it’s gentle at first before it builds significantly, offering steadily more in the mouth, before a classical and precise finish. Drink 2018-2024.

The majority of this cuvée is from old vines belonging to Samuel. This has a beautiful round style with an incisive Chablisien middle – white peaches, perhaps some yellow plum too; it is very harmonious and satisfying. Drink 2018-2024.

ChaBlIS, mONTéE DE TONNERRE, 1ER CRU

From two plots and 75 percent domaine fruit, the 2014 has a really dynamic style. Though it certainly has the flesh associated with this site, it is not vulgarly opulent, with no feeling of heat. There is more white than yellow fruit and an amazing finish. Drink 2018-2024.


ChaBlIS, VaUDéSIR, GRaND CRU

From 100 percent domaine fruit made up of two plots on either side of the valley, this is vinified and matured in older barrels. Fine, pure and pale in colour, this has the faintest touch of coconut yet is pure, fine and complex. A few lemongrass notes, and a strong sense of marine minerals – this is long and lovely. Drink 2020-2026.

From 50- to 60-year-old vines this has a fine, bright, palish colour; the intense lemongrass and yellow plum nose is very striking. This has magical intensity, leading to a crystalline finish. Dancing brilliance throughout. Drink 2020-2026.


ChaBlIS, lES ClOS, GRaND CRU

From a blend of purchased grapes and domaine fruit, this offers an utterly brilliant nose, just the faintest coconut adds complexity. On the palate, there’s a huge mouthful of white fruit and great tension with just a touch of wood nicely integrated at the back. Potentially a great wine when it grows up; the persistence is astonishing. Drink 2020-2028.

BEN OÎT DROIN

domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît droin

The Droins have been producing wines in Chablis for nearly 400 years (their history as vignerons goes back at least to 1620). Benoît represents the 14th generation, having taken over from his father Jean-Paul. The domaine owns 13ha of vineyards and produces 14 different wines, including seven Premiers Crus and five Grands Crus. Benoît runs a sophisticated operation from a large modern winery almost in the shadow of the Grands Crus. He has revised his pruning system and significantly reduced yields. In the cellar the principal change has been moving away from new oak.

The vineyards near to Chablis itself were affected by the heat at Whitsun, which damaged the flowering, so the quantity of wine is no better than last year. Outlying communes, however, were less impacted. Benoît began the harvest early, on 11th September. He compares 2014 to 1996, 2007 (only richer) and 2010 (only more mineral). A recent development here is for the wines to be fermented using their own indigenous yeasts.

White

ChaBlIS, FORêTS, 1ER CRU

Grown on particularly stony, Kimmeridgian soil, this is a fresh, floral, lively and very energetic Chablis. Poised and delicious, not the richest but the balance is perfect, a classic wine to fall in love with. Drink 2018-2022.


ChaBlIS, BUTTEaUx, VIEIllES VIGNES, 1ER CRU

Planted in 1943 and untouched since, these vines are still in great condition. With great weight in the mouth, this has ripe apple notes, huge concentration and a powerful take-no-prisoners finish. Drink 2018-2022.



This comes from vines that run from top to bottom of Chapelots. Palish in colour with broad shoulders, this is not too rich and sunny but is magnificently complete, with excellent balancing acidity. It’s a marvel in the mouth with waves of different fruits, especially plums. Exceptional quality. Drink 2018-2024.



Coming from the north-facing flank of the vineyard, this is faint yellow, offering a really powerful nose, with excellent underlying fruit and a few flowers. There is huge weight behind it, freshened up by crunchy fruit; this is a wine with great potential. Drink 2020-2026.


ChaBlIS, GRENOUIllES, GRaND CRU

The vines here run from the top of the slope to halfway down, producing a remarkably steely wine without the bacon-fat ripeness which sometimes marks this vineyard. The fruit fattens out really well at the back of the palate. This offers weight, class and even complexity. Drink 2018-2026.


White


Pale primrose in colour, this is ripe, floral and quite exotic (almost passion fruit). There follows a super acidity to retain the freshness. This is a lovely wine with an abundance of just-ripe fruit. Drink 2018-2026.



This has a fine, pale colour with both concentration and mineral tension on the nose. Although backward, there’s a little fresh fruit too. It opens out to a more succulent mid-palate, still with more tension than opulence: this is very tight indeed and so promises a great future. Drink 2018-2026.


ChaBlIS, VaUlORENT, 1ER CRU

For his second vintage of this wine, Benoît has cut back on the oak. This is pale in colour, and clearly shows ripe fruit, weight and spice. It’s not just the weight that impresses, but the sense of precision and depth of fruit. It is a really classy wine, with abundant minerals and a touch of spice. Drink 2018-2026.



Displaying a brilliant, pale colour, this has an exquisite bouquet that denotes power too. To taste, there’s a little bit of spice from ripe fruit, some dense stone fruit notes and a sense of completeness. This is really intense, with the fruit acidity and oak all completely integrated. Marvellous. Drink 2020-2028.

ChaBlIS, ValmUR, GRaND CRU

Bright and pale, this has a fresh white-fruit nose with great concentration. With a wealth of fruit through the middle and a touch of oak, this is rich and round but not assertive. A broad-shouldered wine, this will take time. Its exceptional finish leaves us with an amazing sense of power, but it’s never clumsy. Drink 2020-2028.



Pale in colour with a fine, light green tint, this is massively concentrated and flinty. Although backward, you can see what will happen when it is eventually ready. The most complete wine of all in the mouth, with striking minerals wreathed in concentrated fruit, this is ripe but not over-ripe. Drink 2020-2030.


ChaBlIS, GRENOUIllE, GRaND CRU

A little touch more colour and a little touch more oak: this could be considered a southern Chablis. For all the volume of smooth, ripe fruit, the chiselled acidity leaps up behind. There is an explosion of fruit, honeyed and sunny, on the palate. A very complete wine, not exaggerated this year: gourmand but balanced. Drink 2019-2026.

Le domaine d’Henri domaine Pinson Frères

Having stepped down from the company which bears his name, Michel Laroche and his daughters have launched a small domaine based on their family vineyards, and named for Michel’s father Henri. Their principal holding is in Premier Cru Fourchaume, especially a Vieilles Vignes cuvée from 42-year-old vines and an Héritage cuvée, which comes from the oldest parcel dating from 1937.

The third vintage at Domaine d’Henri is the best to date, and so they make their debut in our en primeur brochure. The grapes were hand picked between the 17th and 25th September, a long enough window to allow each plot to reach the desired degree of ripeness, and the wines have seen about 25 percent barrel-ageing. They will not be bottled until the spring.

The legendary Louis Pinson himself retired in 1983 having made some fabulous old style Chablis. His great grand-daughter, Charlène, along with her father, Laurent and her uncle Christophe are now in charge. There is a Rue Pinson in Chablis, dating back to an earlier generation when three Pinson brothers lived in identical houses in the street. Everything is hand-harvested, with sorting of the grapes both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation is mostly in stainless steel using natural yeasts since 2012, then the wines are transferred to barrel for the maturation process.

Laurent Pinson is happy to report better volumes than in recent vintages, and more typical Chablis in style. The grapes ripened nicely yet retained very good acidity. The crop was picked by hand in good weather, and fermented with natural yeasts. The crus are all barrel-aged, with a small proportion being barrel fermented. As usual, we see not just great quality but also excellent value for money at this estate.

ChaBlIS, FOURChaUmE, VIEIllES VIGNES, 1ER CRU

A glorious, pale, bright appearance, with dense white fruit – not overtly juicy but with a great deal in reserve. There’s enormous weight behind this, with some fresh pear notes, and cashmere-like texture alongside the austerity of youth. Drink 2018-2022.


ChaBlIS, FOURChaUmE, héRITaGE, 1ER CRU

The colour is fine and pale with a faint green tint. The nose is really special, very discreet but also extremely precise, with little floral and herbal details to tease out, some verbena and fresh fruit. It is ripe but has retained all the necessary acidity. They may be new kids on the block but this has all the hallmarks of really top Chablis. Huge energy here – this is a great vintage really well made. Drink 2018-2024.


White

ChaBlIS

Fine and pure in colour this has an attractive fresh and perfumed nose that displays floral and ripe apple notes. This has striking concentration, a firm acidity, some lemony notes and even a touch of salinity. A prime example of straight Chablis. Drink 2017-2020.


ChaBlIS, mONT-DE-mIlIEU, 1ER CRU

Although made in a mix of new, one- and two-year-old barrels, the oak does not show. This is a really good wine with fruit to the fore, superb volume and great style. It has magical power through the middle and a tiny note of lemon balm on top of vivid bright fruit. It is very long and persistent. Drink 2018-2024.


ChaBlIS, la FORêT, 1ER CRU

Fine, bright primrose colour, this shows a beautiful integration of fruit and wood. The palate offers an attractive mix of white fruit with fresh plums and the finish is very long indeed, with excellent Chablis-style acidity. Drink 2018-2024.



With a pale colour, this has a nose that suggests a wine of great potential power. It shows all the majesty of Les Clos, and the fruit is usefully supported by a touch of oak. Full and fine, with great grace and depth of fruit, this is exceptionally long. It clearly needs much more time though. Drink 2020-2030.

DIDIER SéGUIER

domaine William Fèvre

This leading Chablis domaine was developed by the eponymous William Fèvre between 1957 and his retirement in 1998 when he sold it to the Champagne House Henriot. Since then the wines have been made by the talented Didier Séguier who previously worked with the Bouchard team in Beaune. The domaine wines include 12ha of Premiers Crus vineyards and no less than 16ha of Grands Crus. Everything is harvested by hand. The Premiers Crus wines are vinified in 30-50 percent oak, the Grands Crus 50-70 percent, along with one-year-old barrels from Bouchard.

The grapes were picked by hand between 15th and 22nd September in good weather conditions. The Premiers Crus will be bottled in December or January, the Grands Crus a little later. The fresh style of the wines is dictated by the summer temperatures, both July and August being cooler than average. The different terroirs are beautifully delineated this year and the range offers some fascinating contrasting pairings: Vaillons/Mont de Milieu; Montée de Tonnerre/Vauloren and Les Preuses/Côte Bouguerots for example.

White

ChaBlIS, VaIllONS, 1ER CRU

This comes from 10 different plots across the cru, and is the quintessence of mineral Vaillons. It offers a wonderful, oysterish bouquet, very pure white fruit, beautifully delineated flavours and a long, precise finish. Classical Chablis to drink with shellfish. Drink 2018-2024.



A recent addition to the range but it has been first class each year. It is a fuller-bodied style of Chablis, with abundant white fruits, pears and ripe apples in the mix, good acidity and a fine long finish. More a wine for white meat than shellfish. Drink 2019-2025.



The 2014 Montée de Tonnerre offers a glorious mouthful of fruit, with peaches and yellow plums. It is amazing how opulent this wine can be without losing any of its Chablis qualities. It deserves more than Premier Cru status. Drink 2018-2026.


ChaBlIS, VaUlORENT, 1ER CRU

This wine offers a fascinating contrast to Montée de Tonnerre. It is very pure, intense, with greener fruit, a fine-boned intensity, and very tightly knit. Oyster shells are lurking in the background, along with a slightly monastic austerity. It will blossom with maturity. Drink 2020-2026.




Part of the success of this cuveé is because William Fèvre has parcels on both sides of the Vaudésir amphitheatre, making a tightly controlled wine which, as it matures will display both mineral elegance and power. For now, there are tightly wound white fruits, a herbal intensity and the promise of a great deal more to come. Drink 2022-2028.


ChaBlIS, lES PREUSES, GRaND CRU

The hallmark of this wine is a gracious elegance, a seamless texture and a feeling of serenity. White fruit and minerality combine effortlessly on a scale which is clearly Grand Cru. It offers more harmony but less electricity than Côte Bouguerots for example. Drink 2022-2028.


ChaBlIS, BOUGROS, CôTE BOUGUEROTS, GRaND CRU

The Grand Cru Bougros would have an outstanding reputation if all the vineyards were on the incredibly steep Côte Bouguerots. The wine has a character all of its own: electric, linear and extraordinarily intense. The flavours are based around white fruit, the minerals more stony than marine in style, and the persistence makes clear that this is a great wine for the long term. Drink 2022-2030.



A combination of all the above Grands Crus, only more so: Les Clos manages to be the most powerful wine, with the greatest concentration of fruit, yet retaining a driving elegance throughout. Minerals abound, and the finish shows extraordinary persistence. Drink 2022-2035.

JEaN-GUIllaUmE BRET DOmINIQUE laFON

Bret Bros Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon

Grandfather Bret bought this property in Vinzelles in 1947. In 2000 Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret took their vineyards out of the local co-operative and established their Domaine de la Soufrandière with 4ha of vines entirely in the appellation of Pouilly-Vinzelles. They have also developed a négociant activity using the name Bret Bros. Most of their vines are in a perfectly situated east-facing slope of Vinzelles called Les Quarts, on Bajocian limestone with a high silica/quartz content. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2000, and they are working towards biodynamic certification.

The 2014 harvest saw an early start, on 7th September, chez les Bret. The Brets characterise the vintage as combining excellent fruit with nervous tension, making the wines both approachable early and capable of long-term keeping. The three Pouilly-Vinzelles wines are from their own property, Domaine de la Soufrandière.

In September 1999 the Lafon family bought a domaine at Milly-Lamartine, renaming it Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon. In May 2003 a further 6ha in the villages of Uchizy and Chardonnay were added, followed by Viré-Clessé in 2009. The whole operation, based at Milly, is now looked after by Caroline Gon under the supervision of Dominique Lafon. The vineyards have been converted to biodynamic farming. The wines are vinified partly in stainless steel, partly in large wooden foudres and partly in demi-muids – barrels of 600 litres – depending on the cuvée.

The 2014 wines were all bottled just before the 2015 harvest using Diam10 corks, and the crus – such as Viré-Clessé – have a slightly different label (effectively the same as those for the other Mâconnais wines but with the colours inverted). Dominique thinks that 2014 is not only an excellent vintage, but also remarkably consistent for every part of the Mâconnais. The entire range is a joy this year.

White

ST VéRaN, EN COmBE

Poised, precise and stylish, with a marvellous weight of fruit – some of it white stone fruit – this has a lovely steely thread. This site on the south side of St Véran continues to impress. Drink 2016-2019.

mâCON-UChIzY, lES maRaNChES

Curiously, this cuvée always has the lowest acidity by analysis but not to the taste. The 2014 is very pale. On the palate, there’s a little touch of greengage: it’s medium bodied, with all its usual elegance and minerality. Drink 2016-2019.


mâCON-ChaRDONNaY, ClOS DE la CROChETTE

A monopole of the domaine, but not labelled as such, these were the first vines to be harvested. This has a beautiful, pure, ripe yet balanced nose, with a wonderful concentration of fresh pear and peach. The balance of acidity is excellent and the wine is really persistent. Drink 2016-2020.

Pale and glowing in appearance, this has a lifted, crystalline nose. Although, by analysis, it has high acidity, there is such a concentration of fruit that it does not show. This possesses tremendous dynamic energy and amazing length. One to keep. Drink 2017-2022.


VIRé-ClESSé

Coming from 60-year-old-plus vines, this was harvested not overly late in order to avoid the ultra-ripe, honeyed style of Viré-Clessé. Indeed, the nose is bright and balanced. On the palate there is yellow fruit – a huge volume of it – yet with a crisp, crunchy finish. Drink 2017-2022.

POUIllY-VINzEllES, lES lONGEaYS, DOmaINE DE la SOUFRaNDIèRE

Les Longeays is on the border between Vinzelles and Chaintré (Pouilly-Fuissé). The nose is floral with a hint of cherries. On the palate, this is a beautiful wine with fresh peaches and a touch of lime zest making it complex and compelling. Impressive, intense yet balanced. Drink 2017-2021.


POUIllY-FUISSé, EN CaREmENTRaNT

Vergisson may be renowned for a more mineral style of Pouilly-Fuissé, yet this 2014 has very attractive, luscious yellow fruit, a sensuous silky texture, fresh acidity behind and superb length. Peaches, but not too much cream. Drink 2017-2021.


POUIllY-VINzEllES, lES QUaRTS, DOmaINE DE la SOUFRaNDIèRE

This flagship wine was very backward when we tasted it, yet the nose still possesses a marvellous stylish elegance. There is great weight to it, yet it has an energetic lift and displays some fresh mirabelle notes. Altogether quite delicious: the fruit keeps coming back in waves. Drink 2017-2024.


POUIllY-VINzEllES, lES QUaRTS, CUVéE mIllERaNDéE, DOmaINE DE la SOUFRaNDIèRE

This comes from a small section of old vines which produce tiny berries in small bunches. On the nose it is tight and tense – more backward still than Les Quarts. Despite this, it has deep yellow fruit, wonderful flavour and a lovely balance between the fruit and acidity. This is well worth keeping for the long-term and so is bottled for us only in magnums. Drink 2019-2028.

olivier Merlin Château des Quarts

Olivier Merlin (originally from the Charolais) and his wife Corinne (a Montbéliarde) began in 1987 by renting 4.5ha of Domaine du Vieux Saint Sorlin, from the retiring owner, René Gaillard. Since then they have bought the domaine, built a new cuverie in the village of La Roche Vineuse, planted new vineyards locally and spread out into further appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé and Moulin à Vent. Theirs has been one of the great success stories of the modern Mâconnais.

Olivier concurs with the view that 2014 is a top vintage for white wines. The weather was good throughout the harvest, so he was able to pick each vineyard at a time of his choosing. There has also been some evolution within the range, with the introduction of an excellent new cuvée, Pouilly-Fuissé, Les Chevrières.

Château des Quarts was created in 2012 by two of our favourite vignerons, Dominique Lafon and Olivier Merlin, who are old friends. The vineyard is managed by Olivier Merlin and the wine made in his facility at La Roche Vineuse. This monopole vineyard of 2.23ha in Chaintré is surrounded by a high stone wall, facing east, overlooking the Saône valley. The oldest vines are approaching their centenary, having been planted in 1917. The key to their longevity is riparia rootstock and an old-school training and pruning regime.

This is the third vintage at this joint venture, and the best to date. Olivier and Dominique are now able to run the vineyards absolutely as they wish, to excellent effect, and indeed a new block on the plateau (alongside the château) has now been planted. All that remains is to restore the building itself… Any volunteers?

mâCON-la ROChE VINEUSE, VIEIllES VIGNES

Always a favourite cuvée at Berry Bros. & Rudd, this is a high-class wine which delivers tremendous value for money. The bouquet is very clean and pure, with just an inflection of ‘muscatty’ Chardonnay to add interest. It is very stylish on the palate, with lovely, elegant fruit: balanced and persistent. Drink 2016-2020.


ST VéRaN, lE GRaND BUSSIèRE

Now that the younger vines have reached 25 years old, Merlin plans to blend their fruit with the original old-vine plot. The 2014 has a very beautiful perfume, but not too heady as Olivier knows to pick this vineyard early. It is delicious, juicy, with great liveliness as well as the muscle of the vintage and fine persistence. Drink 2017-2022.


mâCON-la ROChE VINEUSE, lES CRaS

Possibly our favourite wine from the whole of the Mâconnais, this is glowing with a pure, pale colour. Really intense ripe fruit – some pear, some ripe apple – lends this a firm, chiselled style. Some greengage fruit adds a lovely thread of cool acidity. Truly, it is hard to imagine how this could be better. Drink 2017-2024.


POUIllY-FUISSé, VIEIllES VIGNES

The Vieilles Vignes cuvée was formerly known as Terroir de Fuissé. This is the heartland of Pouilly-Fuissé, delivering the richest wines of the appellation – as this bottling shows. It has lovely weight, with classical, dense white fruit, fine balancing acidity and a succulent finish. Drink 2017-2022.

Its pure, translucent colour heralds a very noble nose, which delivers a real sense of class. Truly intense and very smartly balanced, this is both long and pure. Its abundant minerals tingle the tongue. This is a brilliant, glorious wine. Drink 2017-2022.

New in 2014, Les Chevrières is grown on iron-red limestone. Displaying delicious, heady fruit, a touch of honey (in a good way) and a lifted bouquet, this has marvellous energy which works alongside an almost rugged structure. This has real energy with a bit of spice; a thoroughly muscular Pouilly. Excellent. Drink 2017-2022.


POUIllY-FUISSé, SUR la ROChE

“The grapes were in perfect condition,” chortles Olivier. Its nose is brilliant – energetic, with a little barrel toast, and the class of the fruit shining through. This is a very lively, juicy Pouilly-Fuissé, with a marvellous fresh-apple style and a fine mineral thread. Very glamorous. Drink 2018-2024.

Jean-Yves devevey domaine david Moreau

Jean-Yvesstartedwithasmallholdingofgeneric Bourgogne from modest locations and nothing but a shed behind the house to work in. Through hard work and considerable skill he has built up a successful business, part vigneron, part merchant, with a properly equipped cuverie and cellar to hand. On the domaine side he now has Hautes Côtes, Rully, Volnay and Beaune while to supplementhisownholdingsJean-Yves buys grapes from a small number of conscientious producers.

Despite the ravages of hail over the last few vintages, Jean-Yves has successfully converted his vineyards to organic, and is certified from the 2014 vintage. Though Meursault, Beaune and Volnay suffered once again from the weather, Rully saw a respectable harvest. Jean-Yves reports healthy fruit, with not especially high sugar levels. The reds remind him of 2010, while there is more flesh to the 2014 whites than popular vintages such as 2004 or 2007.

Starting with the 2009 vintage, David Moreau took over part of his octogenerian grandfather’s domaine based in Santenay. Prior to that David worked with Olivier Lamy and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti as well as doing a stage in New Zealand at Neudorf. David began with five of the family’s 9ha and suffice to say that significant changes in both viticulture and vinification have been made compared to the ancien regime. The vineyards were almost all planted in the 1960s, so David has old vines to work with.

One of the exciting aspects of a buyer’s job is to discover new talent on the way up: David and Blandine Moreau clearly fit that description. David began his sixth harvest on 11th September for the white wines and 17th September for his more numerous reds. He is happy with the yields, and characterises the 2014s as having “fresh, crunchy fruit”, finding them more concentrated than 2007, not as strict as 2013 and overall a millésime de plaisir.

Fine, clear, lemon-and-lime in appearance, with a classy, detailed nose, this has lovely integration between fruit and barrel. It fills the mouth, and extends to an enjoyable finish. Overall, this is a very classy wine which shows the quality of the terroir. Drink 2017-2020.

From old vines planted in 1943 and 1947, with about half the production coming from Premier Cru Les Roères, this has a lovely purple colour with a heady, ripe-fruit nose. The tannins may be a touch more rustic than for Santenay, but it’s hard to care when the fruit is so delightful – it surges to the back of the palate. Beautiful stuff. Drink 2018-2024.


SaNTENaY, CUVéE 'S'

The fruit for Cuvée ‘S’ is mostly from Les Cornières vineyard, along with some Les Charmes old vines, which always produces small grapes. The 2014 has an attractive red-purple colour; the nose is open and attractive with medium-deep fruit. It offers gentle tannins, more fruit than acidity, and very good length. Drink 2018-2024.


SaNTENaY, ClOS ROUSSEaU, 1ER CRU

Dense, dark-purple in colour, this has powerful, earthy fruit on the nose; in the mouth it is tight and tense, almost chocolatey, with dark fruit and considerable purity on the palate. Take this wine for intensity, the Clos des Mouches for grace. Drink 2019-2027.


SaNTENaY, ClOS DES mOUChES, 1ER CRU

The vineyard plot is located on a crest with very little topsoil. The nose is concentrated and backward, but the mouth has beautiful, silky fruit with a touch of Côte de Nuits suavity. Long and fine, very graceful, the fruit is absolutely in balance with acidity and tannins. Ripe yet fresh – which sums up 2014. Drink 2018-2026.

domaine Hubert Lamy

There have been Lamys growing vines in St Aubin since 1640 – today the domaine is run by Olivier Lamy in succession to his father Hubert. Olivier ceased supplying négociants in 1997, grubbing up and selling off peripheral vines, keeping only the best and oldest sites. He continues to experiment with different planting densities in a quest to capture even greater expression of terroir.

Olivier Lamy went through his red vineyards three times before the 2014 harvest to remove any damaged berries, which especially posed a risk on the clay soils. The white crop, meanwhile, was superb, with healthy grapes and a respectable yield; picking began on 12th September. Olivier notes excellent definition between the different terroirs, which he says is typical of a cooler year. He plans to give the whites a slightly longer élevage than usual, while using minimal new oak, about 10 percent for the Premiers Crus.

White

ST aUBIN, la PRINCéE

Raised in 600-litre barrels, this exhibits a fine, pale primrose colour with a light green tint. There’s plenty of energy here, with just a touch of flesh through the middle, very good tension and an excellent finish. This is as good as it gets for village St Aubin. Drink 2018-2022.


ST aUBIN, lES FRIONNES, 1ER CRU

This is pale primrose in appearance, with a more accessible bouquet of spring flowers and light fruits. This is full and fleshy, with medium density through the middle. Note the sapid and saline finish, says Olivier. Drink 2018-2024.


SaNTENaY, ClOS DES GRaVIèRES, 1ER CRU

Fine, bright and pure, with a very fresh nose of apple and conference pear, this is currently very backward yet still displays exceptional density, a brilliant mineral thread and exceptional persistence. There’s a little touch of fennel in with the fruit. Drink 2018-2024.


ST aUBIN, ClOS DE la ChaTENIèRE, 1ER CRU

In the glass this is fine and pale, with an attractive, supple, yellow-fruit nose. There’s real density here, with a very slight youthful bitterness which will add complexity in time. This is a very complete wine with both stuffing and also some tension. Drink 2017-2026.



ST aUBIN, EN REmIllY, 1ER CRU

Again, this is an attractive pale primrose colour. Its rich, beguiling nose is redolent of pears and plums. The weight is there: it’s soft, rounded and mouth-filling, very complete, very long and with enough tension. This is completed by a superb finish with a little lively lemony note. Drink 2018-2026.


ST aUBIN, lES mURGERS DES DENTS DE ChIEN, 1ER CRU

This came from “little golden grapes from degenerate vines”, says Olivier, and this good skin-to-juice ratio explains the concentration. In the glass it is bright, clear and pale; the bouquet is floral, with some orange blossom and yellow peaches but nothing over-ripe. This is very lively and energetic with a superb finish. A wine to fall in love with. Drink 2018-2026.

ST aUBIN, DERRIèRE ChEz EDOUaRD, 1ER CRU

Coming from old vines and small bunches that remained free from rot, this is bright purple and very clean with a ripe and vibrant nose. There is very good tension to this, some firm tannins, a lovely crunch at the back and fine, ripe fruit which emerges at the finish. Drink 2018-2022.


SaNTENaY, ClOS DES GRaVIèRES, 1ER CRU

Situated at mid-slope on a mix of hard limestone plus clay, this vineyard ripens easily. The 2014 shows a fine, bright purple colour with a beautiful wealth of fruit thereafter on the nose. Deeply floral, mouth-filling, plump, noble and gorgeous. Drink 2018-2025.

JEaN-BaPTISTE BaChElET

Jean-Claude Bachelet & Fils

With the move to superb new cellars in the hamlet of Gamay, next to St Aubin, Benoît and Jean-Baptiste Bachelet have pretty much taken over from their father Jean-Claude, though he may still be seen with his wartime vintage truck ferrying the grapes at harvest time. The basic principles of a long, slow barrel-ageing for almost two years remain in force, while the state-of-the-art winery has improved consistency. The domaine has holdings in St Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet.

Benoît and Jean-Baptiste Bachelet have made a great range of wines in 2014, though unfortunately they had another short-ish crop, similar to 2013 but lower in red. They adore the excellent fruit/acid balance, and the ripe fruit flavours without high alcohol levels. The wines will stay in barrel until the spring and will not be bottled until late July 2016.

Clear, bright and fresh with a little touch of gun-flint graphite, this is both tightly wound and enticing. An approachable and affordable St Aubin with energy and a fine, concentrated core. Drink 2017-2021.

Fine, bright and pale yellow in the glass, this has a lovely nervous tension evident from first sniff. It is linear in structure, but with flesh on the bones and notes of white peaches. Very persistent. This classy vineyard has produced a very lovely wine. Drink 2017-2022.


ST aUBIN, lES mURGERS DES DENTS DE ChIEN, 1ER CRU

This is pale and bright with a bouquet infused with lemon and a little bit of gunflint; it’s very harmonious. There’s lovely flesh to this – it’s soft and plump but also with energy. A touch of oak, plus a weight on the palate, makes this a full but balanced mouthful. It also displays superb fruit/acid balance. Drink 2018-2024.


PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, lES aUBUES

Les Aubues is very well situated in an enclave within Les Enseignères. Fine, clear and pale yellow in appearance, this displays floral notes, some apples and fennel. This has excellent density of fruit on the palate and is a lovely wine, with very good fruit weight for village Puligny. Drink 2018-2022.


mIChEl NIEllON

domaine Michel niellon

Octogenarian Michel Niellon has turned over operations to his son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, who operates out of smart new cellars between Chassagne and Chagny. They have only 6ha of vines, almost all within the confines of Chassagne-Montrachet, including a range of half a dozen different Premiers Crus. There’s a tiny amount of Chevalier-Montrachet as well. The wines are made in a classical style and are usually bottled just before the next harvest.

Michel Coutoux, son-in-law of the eponymous Monsieur Niellon, is very happy with both his 2014 and 2015 harvests. Yields were good in Chassagne in both years, and certainly the 2014s taste very well. They were all bottled in September, following the usual custom here. The wines are very flattering at this early stage, but with the density to age well.

Chassagne-Montrachet & Puligny-Montrachet

PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, SOUS lE PUITS, 1ER CRU

Fine, pure and clear, this has a fresh and lively nose, full of dancing minerals. In some years this vineyard can be a bit bony but in 2014 there is a layer of flesh in evidence, infused with some fresh lime notes as well. Drink 2018-2024.


ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, la BOUDRIOTTE, 1ER CRU

The bouquet shows a faint touch of wood but there is a lovely classy wine here. It offers beautiful white fruit, with an elegant satin texture, pure and long. This Boudriotte really kicks on across the second half of the palate. Drink 2018-2024.


ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, BlaNChOT DESSUS, 1ER CRU

The Bachelets own the best section of this vineyard which abuts Le Montrachet. The lovely lemon and lime colour heralds a very classy nose. This has all its usual majesty: a deft saline note, little plums and an endless mineral aftertaste. Everything it should be. Drink 2019-2026.


BIENVENUES-BâTaRD-mONTRaChET, GRaND CRU

An attractive pale yellow in colour, this has some wood on the nose from new barrels, along with a little bit of gunflint. Tensely wound, extra concentrated and with a sense of balance, this wine also has extra dimensions – a multi-layered finish, lively acidity and fresh, ripe fruit. Tense and delicious. Drink 2019-2028.

Jean-noël Gagnard

Caroline Lestimé took over from her father, Jean-Noël Gagnard (b.1926) in 1989, since which time she has fine-tuned the holdings, increasing the number of white wine cuvées by separating out each different vineyard. She has also planted new sites in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune to complement her range of Chassagne-Montrachet (including nine white and two red Premiers Crus) and Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet.

The 2014 vintage is their first to be certified organic by Ecocert, which will appear on the label. Sadly it is another small crop, no bigger than 2013. While Caroline Lestimé was, as usual, self-deprecating with regards to her wines, we can tell you that they are absolutely stunning this year. We cannot remember a better vintage in her cellar.

The most accessible of the Premiers Crus, this has a cracking good nose with just a little touch of gunflint. There is superb fruit through the middle, a creamy satin touch, ripe white fruits and perfect balancing acidity. Yes please. Drink 2017-2022.


ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, ClOS DE la malTROYE, 1ER CRU

Fine, bright and pale in colour, the nose shows ripe and cheerful fruit, but it is in the mouth that the character really shows. It has the classic mix of fruit, flesh and tension that makes this such a good vintage. A lovely, classy finish: excellent. Drink 2018-2024.


ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, la BOUDRIOTTE, 1ER CRU

La Boudriotte is solid and weighty; a more muscular style of wine. There is real, steely concentration on the palate, with weight and distinction. This cuvée offers a nice marriage of fruit and oak. Drink 2018-2024.

With a similar fine, pale colour, the nose is less expressive, suggesting density more than immediate accessibility. There is a huge weight of fruit in the mouth, definite white fruit, some pears, perhaps some greengage, very juicy but with a lovely thread running through the middle. This has a very fine finish. Coming from very old vines in Clos de la Truffière, this is the densest of his wines. In appearance this is fine and pale yellow. There’s a sense of weight and class and proper density here. Fruit swells across the palate: this is a beautiful mouthful of quality Chassagne, well supported by a touch of graceful oak, yet the fruit dominates. The finish is grand. Drink 2019-2024.

Two new barrels and one old have been used in its production. The colour is beautiful, with just a hint of light green. This is magical again – really the perfect balance of ripeness and freshness. A little wood tannin, a little graphite, volumes of finely toned flesh: altogether a very grand Grand Cru. Drink 2020-2030.

Beautiful bright purple, with a marvellous fragrant floral bouquet, maybe some raspberry notes, majoring on the purity. This is not massively dense but has good acidity along with crunchy fruit. A great source of pleasure. Drink 2018-2022.

éTIENNE DE mONTIllE

Château de Puligny-Montrachet

The Château de Puligny-Montrachet was a slumbering force until finally being awoken by the arrival of Étienne de Montille in time to oversee the 2001 vintage. Under Étienne, yields have been drastically reduced and the wines are handled much more sympathetically in the cellar so that the quality of the fruit dominates the oak. In 2012, Étienne and investors purchased the property and have radically reformed the estate, dropping unsuitable vineyards, converting to organic (and indeed biodynamic) farming, and further improving the winemaking.

The progress we noted with the 2013 vintage here has been further developed with an excellent range of 2014 wines. Extra details apparent this year are the enhanced use of lees after racking and the minimal use of sulphur without risking oxidation. The Château de Puligny rises a further few notches up the ladder. Étienne de Montille notes that, in 2014, “there was super clean fruit and we could pick at leisure”.

BOURGOGNE BlaNC, ClOS-DU-ChâTEaU

Its fine, bright colour heralds an elegant bouquet: a perfect mix of fruit and gentle oaking. This is exuberant – perhaps even beguiling. Some old vines form the backbone of this cuvée, helping to provide the lovely mineral thread. Drink 2016-2018.


ST aUBIN, EN REmIllY, 1ER CRU

From old vines of fine quality, in what may be St Aubin’s best vineyard, this is gorgeous. After a discreet nose, the palate is full of yellow plums, white peaches and some lemon notes with excellent density. Drink 2018-2022.

The vines are very well situated on the Puligny side of Chassagne in proper white wine territory. This offers a fresh, clear colour with some juicy, ripe lemon notes on the palate, which then fills out beautifully towards the back, with a delicious, crunchy, salivating finish. Drink 2018-2023.


PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET

Mostly from a declassified sector of Les Chalumeaux, this is quite exceptional for village Puligny with a glorious lift to it, mouth-filling yet with dramatic tension, both white and fresh yellow fruit and excellent mineral acidity. Dense, intense and very classy. Drink 2018-2024.


SéBaSTIEN maGNIEN

domaine Sébastien Magnien

No relation to the many Magniens of the Côte de Nuits, young Sébastien comes instead from Meloisey in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune – a village whose wines were as well thought of as those of Volnay in the 14th century, and were served at the coronation of King Philip II Augustus in 1180. However, to be in the thick of things, Sébastien has transferred headquarters to revamped cellars in the middle of Meursault. He is equally adept at making red and white wines.

Sébastien professes himself to be very agreeably surprised by the 2014s. He notes good phenolic maturity so could extract the Pinot fruit well, and riper flavours than 2013. Sadly he had yet another vintage of low yields for his whites, especially in Meursault. The wines are concentrated but should be attractive very young.

CÔTE DE BEAUNE Puligny-Montrachet

PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, la GaRENNE, 1ER CRU

In the glass this is pale and clear with a light green tint. It has a lovely nervous tension, with fresh bright fruit and a great sense of precision. There are lemons, some plums and also white flowers – lots of detail here – before the long, fine, distinguished finish. Drink 2018-2024.


PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, lES FOlaTIèRES, 1ER CRU

Fine and pale, with a light green tint, this has just a hint of gunflint in it and a sense of greater weight. There’s an impeccable balance between the clay and the limestone, with beautiful integration of minerals and acidity, justifying its status as a senior Premier Cru. Very fine. Drink 2019-2026.


ChEValIER-mONTRaChET, GRaND CRU

Very pale and clear in colour, again with a light green tint, this is exceptionally fine-boned, with tremendous elegance and mineral purity. It combines discretion with intensity. This is no blockbuster, but rather is much more linear in style and very fine indeed with amazing persistence. Drink 2020-2028.

Darkish purple in appearance, with a depth of crushed raspberry fruit, this is very fine on the palate, with peppery notes, good acidity and a lovely finish. An accessible, racy red wine. Drink 2017-2020.


White

mEURSaUlT, lES mEIx ChaVaUx

With more fruit than oak, this has a certain amount of power; it’s not overtly seductive as it is very backward at this stage. It’s really tight and energetic and white fruit dominated. Although very impressive this is far from ready. Drink 2018-2022.

DOmINIQUE laFON

dominique Lafon

From 2008, Dominique Lafon decided to make a few wines under his own label, separate from the family domaine (Les Héretiers du Comte Lafon). Though this new company has the official status of a négociant, almost all the wines are in fact domaine bottlings from vineyards which Dominique either owns or has the contract to farm. The wines are now vinified, matured and bottled in cellars in Meursault, formerly belonging to Domaine René Manuel.

Production of the Dominique Lafon wines has now moved to large cellars at the Château de Bligny, providing much better working conditions than previously. As a result of the hail, there is unlikely to be any village Volnay or Beaune Épenottes for us to offer. However, Dominique has found an excellent source of Beaune Vignes Franches this year to make up part of the shortfall. This cuvée apart, all the vineyards are managed by the Les Héretiers du Comte Lafon viticultural team, using the same methods. Starting this year, the wines will all be bottled using Diam30 corks.

White

BOURGOGNE BlaNC

This is sourced from vineyards below Meursault and Puligny, and has been in bottle since September. The wine is completely beautiful – a lovely expression of fruit, with just the right amount of flesh and absolute precision. It’s electric. It is hard to envisage a better example. Drink 2016-2018.


mEURSaUlT

From Les Chaumes de Narvaux, also known as La Petite Montagne, this is a textbook modern Meursault. It’s full of fruit yet not fat; fresh yet also with a richness behind it. Some lovely lemon-drop notes infuse the fruit. Exciting, dancing stuff. Drink 2017-2024.


mEURSaUlT, lES NaRVaUx

From one of Meursault’s finest village vineyards, this displays apples and lemons up front, peaches and pears behind and class throughout. It opens out very nicely on the palate with a delicious tangy lingering finish and real persistence. Drink 2019-2026.


PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, ChamPGaIN, 1ER CRU

Dominique’s only white Premier Cru has a very clean, clear colour with the same crystalline purity on the nose, a little gunflint reduction, and lots of detail to the fruit. A wine of star-like brilliance, this is very linear, extremely persistent, lifted and lovely. Drink 2019-2028.

haUTES CôTES DE BEaUNE, ClOS DE la PERRIèRE

From vines planted in 1954 grown on classic clay-limestone soil this has a brilliant mid-purple colour with a totally alluring dark raspberry bouquet. It has beautifully even fruit throughout, good concentration and structure with both tannin and acidity, and an immensely long finish. Drink 2017-2021.


VOlNaY, lES éChaRDS

Displaying bright, ripe purple hues with a very approachable bouquet, this is laced with elegant, ripe fruit. There is a very juicy core of dark red fruit, agreeably ripe, while on the palate the fruit swamps the tannins. Small bunches of tiny grapes explains the concentration. Drink 2019-2023.


POmmaRD, lES PETITS NOIzONS

From vines planted in 1931, this wine has a lovely bright red-purple colour. The nose is brisk and almost elegant, with a terrific crunch of dark red fruit and a hint of chocolate. There’s great finesse though, and the fruit swarms all over the structure. Very lively and will repay keeping. Drink 2020-2025.

BEaUNE, VIGNES FRaNChES, 1ER CRU

Three barrels of this gorgeous red-purple wine were made. The nose is brilliant – perfumed and heady; the palate is one of beautiful deep red fruit, delicious and with a lovely texture, genial yet also classy. Dominique hopes to continue this vineyard in future: excellent news. Drink 2018-2024.


VOlNaY, lES lURETS, 1ER CRU

This Premier Cru Volnay displays vibrant purple fruit with a touch of wood. There is impressive weight to this and no signs of post-hail stress. The fruit is mouth-filling and the finish excellent. Although this is backward, it is nonetheless very promising. Drink 2018-2024.

domaine Michel Bouzereau & Fils

The Bouzereau clan is widespread in the village of Meursault, with Domaine Michel Bouzereau at the forefront. Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau, Michel’s son, is now in sole charge. He moved to a purpose-built winery in 2009 which has made the winemaking a great deal easier to manage and has enabled Jean-Baptiste to refine his style towards greater purity as well as more substance. The wines are racked after 11 months with the better village Meursault and all the Premiers Crus being returned to barrel for additional ageing, before bottling early the following year.

Jean-Baptiste liked the fruit and the flesh of his 2014s from the start, but since October he feels that the structure and sense of class have become apparent. He was happily surprised to find such regular, healthy fruit despite the hail, and, apart from the size of the crop, there was no discernible difference between the hailed vineyards and the others. Overall his crop was 40 percent below a normal year, and 10 percent below 2013, so his pricing this year is eminently fair.

White

With a light and fresh bouquet, this is very refined with light verbena notes, a lovely mineral thread running through the middle and a dancing finish. Drink 2017-2020.

Fine, pale, lemon-and-lime colour, the nose is dominated by very classy, fresh fruit with some floral touches, elegant for Charmes. Mouth-filling, deep, white fruit follows on the palate, displaying perfect poise here, and a fine long finish. Very good indeed this year. Drink 2018-2026.

Pale colour with some green tints, the nose is fresh, floral, quite stony too. Superb in the mouth, the wine is vibrant with dancing fruit, greengages and white peaches, and a lingering finish with a touch of cream to round it out. Drink 2018-2026.


PaTRICK JaVIllIER

Patrick Javillier

The Javilliers have been involved in the wine business for generations as courtiers. When Patrick started out in 1974 this was the main source of his income, alongside which he worked 3ha of vineyards. In 1990 he was able to give up being a courtier as the domaine was by then large enough and well enough established. It now covers 10ha. Patrick avoids using new wood where there is more clay in the soil.

Patrick likes the freshness and purity of 2014, with nothing that hints at vulgarity. He compares the vintage to 2002 and the best of 2004. Elegance is the hallmark of 2014 but there is good body too, with the wines coming in at or just over 13 percent alcohol. The wines were bottled in the autumn.

The wine has a pure, pale colour with an impressive nose of grand quality, the detail still to come; heady perhaps, but lively rather than heavy. It is very intense with pear notes arriving at the back of the palate, having the most weight of the three Meursault Premiers Crus. Drink 2018-2026.

Along with a bright, fresh, pale colour, this offers a lively, stimulating, mineral bouquet: very stylish, with superb backbone through the middle, long and fine, accompanying a mix of different fruits, which are more white than yellow. Drink 2018-2026.

JEaN-PhIlIPPE FIChET

Jean-Philippe Fichet

Jean-Philippe’s big step forward came in 2000 when he moved the whole operation to splendid cellars at Le Creux du Coche by the Hôpital de Meursault. Fichet is looking for purity in his wines. He deals mostly with lieux-dits in Meursault with just one Premier Cru in Puligny. Constantly experimenting and refining, his wines have real definition and distinction, with the individual terroirs clearly exposed. The wines are raised in barrel for the first year, using larger demi-muids for the lesser appellations, then assembled in tank. A maximum of 30 percent new barrels is used on any cuvée.

Jean-Philippe is serene in the knowledge of the quality of his 2014 vintage. The grapes were entirely healthy, there were no problems in vinification, the maturation process is happening as it should and the wines are set to give a great deal of pleasure all round. There is less reduction than last year, so they will be accessible reasonably early, while still having good keeping potential.

Pale colour with green tints, the fresh nose is grassy with spring flowers. A real bundle of energy, the wine is fresh and invigorating and with very good length. Very exciting. Drink 2017-2020.

The glory of this wine lies in the mouth-filling palate. It displays a wonderful mix of white fruits with excellent minerals running through. Fruit, flesh and structure are all in balance. aNTOINE JOBaRD

domaine Antoine Jobard

What was formerly Domaine François Jobard became Antoine et François Jobard when Antoine joined his father in 2002, evolving into just Domaine Antoine Jobard when François fully retired in 2007, after 50 vintages in Meursault. The style has evolved only slightly with the change of generation; Antoine bottles slightly earlier (typically after 21 months rather than 24). The winemaking remains traditional here, with no lees stirring and very little new wood, the wines reflecting an unhurried restraint, competence, dedication and precision, giving them complex and elegant characteristics.

Overall yields were better than Antoine feared in 2014, but some of his vineyards, including those used for his Bourgogne Blanc and Meursault En la Barre as well as part of Poruzots, were particularly badly hit by the hail. He picked from 13th September and has made his usual range of outstanding, ageworthy wines which will not be bottled until next summer. The secret to his style is not clarifying the juice out of the press, and no stirring of the lees.

Pale straw with a very faint, green tint, En la Barre is muscular yet also elegant, offering a huge volume of fruit in the mouth, crisp acidity, perfumed red fruit notes, cherries and an excellent finish on which the fruit lingers. Drink 2019-2024.

Pale primrose in the glass, the wine is elegant and floral, yet still very concentrated – ultra-dense, with a good thread of acidity running through the fruit. Medium-bodied and fleshy, the 2014 has a saliva-inducing, fresh finish. Drink 2019-2024.


PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, lE TRézIN

Pale lemon-yellow, the nose has some straw notes, along with a bit of fruit, lots of energy and a saline – almost oyster shell – touch to it, showing the hillside location. This is really charming, and could almost be mistaken in style for a really fine Chablis. Drink 2019-2024.


mEURSaUlT, PORUzOTS, 1ER CRU

Fine, clear, pale-straw coloured, this is of course backwards, in classic Jobard fashion; tight and tense with extra flesh emerging towards the back. Another pretty wine, with enough acidity to balance the flesh. Drink 2020-2026.

Fine, pale colour, this has some attractive, ripe, green, phenolic notes. There is real power to this, a huge mouthful, backward as ever but with perfect balance, energy throughout and a really lovely mouth-feel. This could not be better! Drink 2020-2026.


mEURSaUlT, GENEVRIèRES, 1ER CRU

Pale primrose, the 2014 Genevrières shows very little bouquet at first, but concentrated fruit can soon be teased out. There is a surge of glorious fruit on the palate, with apples, pears and peaches, fresh but concentrated, lasting right to the end of a long finish. Drink 2022-2030.

Just four barrels of Jobard’s Charmes were made in 2014. Fine, pale primrose, the very pure classy nose makes an immediate statement of high quality. There follows a beautifully full mouthful, hugely satisfying, brimming with charm, body and class. Drink 2022-2030.

domaine de Montille

Domaine de Montille was developed by Hubert de Montille (1930-2014), a prominent Dijon lawyer, who inherited 2.5ha of vineyards in Volnay in 1947. Over the years he acquired further parcels in Volnay, Pommard and Puligny-Montrachet Le Cailleret. Today the business is run by his son Étienne who has extended the domaine with purchases of vineyards in Beaune, Corton and the Côte de Nuits, including some marvellous Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and the red wines are increasingly vinified with whole bunches.

Étienne de Montille began picking whites on 10th and reds on 13th September, relatively early. Despite the hail (worst in Pommard than Beaune, Volnay less) yields were slightly improved compared to 2013. The fruit was clean with small berries, and beautiful clusters, so they were able to continue with their usual programme of whole-bunch vinification in most instances. The details are given for each wine. They will be long lived wines.

White

mEURSaUlT, lES PERRIèRES, 1ER CRU

Pale lemon in colour, this has a wonderful, rounded, classical Meursault bouquet, albeit still on the fresher side. The wine has a marvellous mid-palate, discreet at first, magical in the middle, with plenty of weight and a great thread of acidity. Exceptional persistence. Drink 2019-2025.


PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, lE CaIllERET, 1ER CRU

This had just been racked, so was not yet clear. Quite a pale colour; the wine has a gentle, discreet nose, beautiful fruit, good ripeness, with multi-layered Cailleret minerals and graceful, dancing fruit all the way to the finish. This should grow into a truly fabulous wine. Drink 2020-2026.



The 2014 is pale but glows with an exciting, lifted bouquet. Nothing heavy here, as once again the finesse and tension of the year shows through, with just a little green reduction. This has lovely energy without being a blockbuster, and beautiful minerals at the back. Drink 2020-2026.

BEaUNE, lES PERRIèRES, 1ER CRU

One third whole-bunch vinified, for the old vines, this is dense purple, with deep raspberry fruit. The wine displays a crunchy, fresh, mineral finish, reflecting the limestone content of the soil here, with some tannins neatly framed by the fruit. Drink 2020-2028.


NUITS-ST GEORGES, aUx ThOREY, 1ER CRU

Two thirds of this wine is whole-bunch fermented. The perfume is delightful, deliciously smooth and gracious. Fragrant, ripe, red fruit runs throughout, with a seamless finish. Drink 2020-2028.


VOlNaY, lES ChamPaNS, 1ER CRU

As the vines are younger, the fruit from Les Champans is de-stemmed. The wine has good density of colour with an elegant nose, between cherry and raspberry. On the palate, raspberry notes come to the fore, with good, structural balance, superb texture and a fine, floral aftertaste. Drink 2020-2026.


POmmaRD, lES PézEROllES, 1ER CRU

No stems were included in Les Pézerolles which shows a fine, bright purple colour. Really clear, pure, red fruit, with plenty of volume, this is a gentler style of Pommard, with no discernible tannins, good fruit and harmonious all the way through. Drink 2022-2028.

Despite the hail it was possible to do 100 percent whole-cluster fermentation after meticulous sorting. The colour is bright and fresh, while the nose offers some wild strawberry, floral notes. The stems make the finish a touch dry at the moment, but this will come together and soften. There is a brilliant quality of fruit at the finish. Drink 2022-2028.


POmmaRD, lES RUGIENS-BaS, 1ER CRU

One third of Les Rugiens undergoes whole-cluster vinification. Medium to deep purple, the nose is laden with ripe, cherry fruit and only a touch of spice. Very appealing, there is a huge wealth of fruit on the palate, spectacular quality and lovely, fine-grained tannins. This shows the nobility of the terroir, with no indications of hail. Drink 2022-2030.


CORTON, ClOS DU ROI, GRaND CRU

All whole-bunch vinified, this year’s Clos du Roi is a lovely, clear pink-purple. The nose is very fresh and pure, more raspberry than strawberry, with an underlying spice and the sweet fruit bursting through. Magical on the palate, this is a vibrant, delicious wine. Drink 2022-2032.

mIChEl laFaRGE maRC-OlIVIER BUFFET

domaine Michel Lafarge domaine François Buffet

Michel Lafarge (b.1928) and his son Frédéric make use of their combined experience to produce some of the greatest wines in Volnay. There is nothing modern in their winemaking, though the meticulous care of their biodynamically farmed vineyards puts the domaine at the forefront of viticultural practices. When they are working on a patch of vines they are usually accompanied by their hens who eat up any lurking pests. The grapes are destemmed, vinified traditionally and very little new oak is used in the cellar.

Michel and Frédéric found the hail even sadder in 2014, their third year of suffering in succession, because the vines looked in such great condition before the catastrophe of 28th June. They lost more than half the crop once again, but were able to harvest ripe and healthy grapes to make absolutely fantastic wines. They remind Michel of both 1966 and 1978, vintages “which are still beautiful and always were”.

This family-run domaine, which dates back to 1692, is currently managed by Marc-Olivier, son of François, though still with help from his parents. The family had a very successful négociant business, under the name Ferdinand Buffet, until the 1930s when fortunes were lost in the great crash. Even so, there is an impressive range of Volnay (Taillepieds, Clos des Chênes, Champans, Carelles, Clos de la Rougeotte) and Pommard (Rugiens, Clos Micot, Poutures) vineyards. Marc-Olivier uses some whole bunches when he feels the vineyard is suitable, though not for young vines. The wines are matured in barrel over 22 months.

This is the third year in a row that the domaine has suffered serious hail damage, which was especially bad in Marc-Olivier’s village, Volnay, and all the Pommards (Rugiens apart). Because of the hail, he used much less in the way of whole-bunch vinification, just 20 percent on Taillepieds and Rugiens, and none at all on his other wines. As ever, his gentle handling of extraction has resulted in very pale colours by modern standards, but this in no way affects the concentration of his wines. There are very good results here in 2014.

Red

Pale pink-purple with a lightly perfumed nose; there is lovely structure to this without being firm. Indeed it is all about graceful Volnay fruit. Drink 2020-2025.


VOlNaY, VENDaNGES SélECTIONNéES

From vineyards at the heart of the appellation, just below the Premiers Crus, this has a similar colour and style to the straight Volnay but with just a little more stuffing, and greater persistence. Drink 2021-2028.

Fine, elegant purple, this is a very perfumed, gorgeously stylish wine. It has absolutely heavenly fresh red fruit, a sense of Côte de Nuits-style seduction and exceptional persistence. This wine has outperformed its usual place in the firmament. Drink 2022-2030.


VOlNaY, ClOS DU ChâTEaU DES DUCS, 1ER CRU

Produced only by Lafarge, this again has a fine, pale colour. Suave and sensual through the palate, the fruit just keeps growing. It is really a treat to be allowed to taste these wines this year. Drink 2022-2030.


VOlNaY, ClOS DES ChêNES, 1ER CRU

Just a touch more colour, though still in the pink-purple register, the 2014 provides a really concentrated mouthful of fruit with ethereal, sensual notes, more structure behind and an exceptional finish. This will make a wonderful bottle in the fullness of time. Drink 2022-2035.

VOlNaY, ClOS DE la ROUGEOTTE, 1ER CRU

The wine from this monopole displays Buffet’s usual bright but pale colour along with a classy, balanced nose. This is very pure and stylish with a lovely backbone, yet all with Volnay red-fruit elegance. Drink 2019-2024.


VOlNaY, TaIllEPIEDS, 1ER CRU

Glowing purple with a heady delicious nose, this displays really intense fruit in the domaine’s usual elegant register: noble raspberries, a nice touch of oak and an exceptionally long sensual finish. There was very little hail here, fortunately. Drink 2020-2028.


POmmaRD, lES RUGIENS, 1ER CRU

Just two barrels were made from these vines which are over 100 years old. There’s a glowing pink-purple colour, which is pleasingly fragrant with a touch of stems. Superb, delicate little pieces of fruit weave across the palate. This is really well put together, with amazing finesse for Pommard, and all the power you could want. Excellent. Drink 2022-2030.

PaUl zINETTI

domaine du Comte Armand

The family of the Comte Armand has owned the vineyard of Clos des Epeneaux in Pommard since 1826. The modern era began with the stewardship of Pascal Marchand (1985-1999) followed by Benjamin Leroux (1999-2014) and now Paul Zinetti, previously second-in-command to Benjamin, has taken over from the 2014 vintage. Further vineyards were acquired in 1994: Auxey-Duresses, Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru, Volnay and Volnay Frémiets.

Paul Zinetti has replaced Benjamin Leroux as régisseur (general manager)at this famous estate. He has inherited a great position but also, alas, a tradition of hail-affected vintages. With this in mind, Paul has looked for lighter extraction in 2014, with less punching down than previously. He has been with the domaine for several years prior to taking over, so he is fully au fait with these vineyards. The village Auxey is a steal this year.

aUxEY-DURESSES, 1ER CRU

Rich, deep and purple in colour with an impressive volume of fruit, there’s greater density than the village wine and very good acidity here; this is crunchy but concentrated. Although less seductive than the village Auxey this is a serious wine for the medium term. Drink 2019-2022.


VOlNaY

Bright red in colour, with immediate deep red fruit aromatics, this has plenty of fruit and energy on the palate with a slightly firm finish which the fruit will grow through. Drink 2019-2024.


VOlNaY, FRémIETS, 1ER CRU

A lighter colour than the village Volnay but with a more perfumed nose, this is very elegant, capturing the ethereal nature of fine Volnay. Fresh and balanced on the palate, with attractive length, only three barrels were made. The light touch suits this wine well. Drink 2020-2025.


POmmaRD, ClOS DES EPENEaUx, 1ER CRU

Just 12hl/ha but that is still better than 2012 or 2013. Made with 30 percent new wood, this is a glorious imperial purple; on the nose, it’s really fragrant, lifted and lovely. To taste, there’s raspberry fruit mixed with alpine strawberries, some darker fruit too, the whole stretching beautifully across the palate. It has medium density and a pure and stylish finish. There’s a little touch of tannin at the back to remind us that it is Pommard – and a very fine one at that. Drink 2022-2030.


Red

aUxEY-DURESSES

Coming from a mix of old and young vines which avoided the hail, Paul had an excellent crop with healthy grapes. This is very elegant for Auxey with a raft of fresh fruit, super acid balance, a faint tannin behind and real length and energy. Drink 2018-2020.

BENJamIN lEROUx

Benjamin Leroux

Having created a name for himself as régisseur (general manager) of Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard from 1999 until 2014, Benjamin Leroux established a small négociant business based in Beaune in 2007. The emphasis is on Côte de Beaune whites and Côte de Nuits reds. The company also owns a small holding of Bâtard-Montrachet and since 2014 some vineyards in Meursault. In a short space of time Benjamin Leroux’s wines have built an impressive reputation.

“This is definitely the best vintage I have made in white,” says Benjamin. “The wines have great vineyard definition; I would just have loved to have made more. It is my style of vintage.” His reds, too, have gorgeous layers of ripe fruit, so 2014 is clearly a significant success all round for Benjamin.

PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET

From three vineyards, including Le Trézin at the top of the hill, this is particularly good for village wine. It is relatively full-bodied yet still very elegant, with a saline quality that seems typical of Puligny this year. Drink 2018-2022.


mEURSaUlT, lES NaRVaUx

From a favourite hillside vineyard, this has a pale straw colour, with a lovely, open aromatic white fruit nose, swelling fruit on the palate, perfect fruit/acid balance and very good length. Drink 2018-2022.


ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, lES BaUDINES, 1ER CRU

With a clear bright fresh colour, a chiselled, mineral nose and a classy, steely thread that runs through the concentrated white fruits, this has a really lovely pure finish. Drink 2019-2025.


ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, TêTE DU ClOS, 1ER CRU

A bouquet of scented lemon fruit, with lifted purity and elegance, really kicks this wine off to a great start. There is huge energy behind it, yet it remains stylish and balanced. Followers will know just how fine this vineyard is. Drink 2019-2026.


mEURSaUlT, GENEVRIèRES-DESSUS, 1ER CRU

From Benjamin’s own property, this is fine, bright and pure pale straw in the glass, with a brilliantly defined, chiselled nose. Fruit swells across the palate: there’s delicious flesh and good persistence. This is a noble expression of Meursault. Drink 2019-2026.


CÔTE DE BEAUNE Beaune


Only 2.5 barrels were made. Its bouquet is very dense but exceptionally backward, as befits a Grand Cru. On the palate, the fruit absolutely swells, with a very engaging lime mineral thread while all the expected weight remains in superb balance. This is incredibly persistent. Drink 2022-2030.


Red

GEVREY-ChamBERTIN

Rich purple in colour with good energy and pure red fruit on the nose, this shows real drive and tension on the palate. It has a fine-boned structure and excellent balance. Pure and classy. Drink 2018-2022.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, aUx ETElOIS

This vineyard lies in a former quarry beneath Griotte-Chambertin. The wine is fresh purple in colour, with lovely sweet fruit. It is very stylish, and the pure raspberry notes are displayed with elegance. Drink 2019-2024.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES ChamPEaUx, 1ER CRU

The raspberry and blackberry fruit are really succulent this year: this is ripe but with fresh mineral touches. Les Champeaux is a cooler site, hence the detail and delicacy. Drink 2019-2025.


VOlNaY, ClOS DE la CaVE DES DUCS, 1ER CRU

The bouquet offers brilliant, pure fruit with real energy along with a floral note of violets and dark cherries. We love this cuvée, which happily escaped the hail. This is hugely satisfying on the palate, with a fabulous long finish. Drink 2019-2024.



With rich bright red fruit, this makes for a suave mouthful. It is really very elegant rather than the more plummy style of Nuits. The fine, full mouthful of red fruit is supported by notably fine-grained tannins. Drink 2019-2024.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES SUChOTS, 1ER CRU

Glowing purple, with a particularly fine and distinguished nose, this is fabulous in the mouth too: such density, such purity. With very good tannins behind, this is altogether a sensual and svelte Suchots. Drink 2020-2028.

DaVID CROIx

domaine des Croix

The former Domaine Duchet in Beaune was bought in 2005 by American Roger Forbes and his co-investors, and entrusted to the care of David Croix, the gifted winemaker for Camille Giroud. The estate has been renamed Domaine des Croix, in honour of David and also the numerous stone crosses to be found in the vineyards. The original Beaune and Corton-Charlemagne vineyards have since been supplemented by Aloxe-Corton, Corton La Vigne au Saint and Corton Grèves. The vineyards are farmed organically.

David Croix started picking here on 11th September, two days before he began at Camille Giroud. This was a much easier harvest than 2013, as there was much less hail than the previous vintage. The wines have an elegance and freshness to them that appeals enormously, and yet does not hide their impressive concentration.

Red

BEaUNE

This cuvée includes some Premier Cru Teurons. It has a dense purple colour with a dark centre, followed by a heavenly floral nose, with deep red fruits, rounded and well supported by its oak. A delicious attractive wine which will be accessible early. Drink 2018-2022.


BEaUNE, lES BRESSaNDES, 1ER CRU

This has a delicious fresh purple colour with good depth, though the nose is reticent – fresh and bright but not yet delivering detail. There’s fine, clean powerful fruit right across the palate, with mineral freshness behind. This is a cooler site which gives it the crunch at the back. Drink 2019-2025.


BEaUNE, lES GRèVES, 1ER CRU

Made using 50 percent whole-bunch fermentation and healthy fruit this has a lovely crystal-clear purple colour with a beautiful fragrance. With dense fruit on the cusp of red and black, there’s more short-term tannins from the stems but these will integrate beautifully with the fruit. This will have a great future. Drink 2020-2026.


CORTON, la VIGNE aU SaINT, GRaND CRU

Lovely concentrated red fruit, the stems (50 percent whole-bunch) are subsumed by the fruit, just leaving their trace with the freshness at the finish. This is a really salivating wine, as elegant as Corton can be with a wealth of bright red fruit. Lovely persistence. Drink 2020-2026.



CORTON, lES GRèVES, GRaND CRU

From 60-year-old vines, this is vinified without stems because the style in this vineyard is already strapping enough. Much more muscled than La Vigne au Saint, there is darker fruit, it’s very mineral, with an excellent aftertaste: just what one hopes for from Corton. Drink 2020-2030.

DaVID CROIx

Maison Camille Giroud

In January 2002, Maison Camille Giroud was bought by an American consortium led by banker Joe Wender and winery owner Ann Colgin, and a new chapter began. The business is managed by winemaker/technical director David Croix, who is overseeing a major revamping major revamping of the winemaking facilities and a programme of replacement and renewal of the old barrels to make wines in a much purer, more modern style. The company also owns 1.20ha of vineyards in and around Beaune.

Tasting with David Croix at Camille Giroud is always a pleasure, especially so this year as the range of 2014s is delicious. David feels that the wines are all about drinkability and balance rather than exceptional power. His theory is that the great start to the growing season kept the vines healthy through the cool, damp summer.

White

ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, TêTE DU ClOS, 1ER CRU

Coming from old vines with little bunches of grapes, this ripened early and so was picked on 14th September. This ripeness is seen in the fine, pale yellow colour, and the marvellous density of the fruit. This is an adorable wine from a favourite vineyard. Drink 2019-2024.



This comes from east-facing vines in Le Rognet et Corton. The wine has impressive density and charm: the bouquet really sings with its fragrant lemon blossom and minerals. The palate continues in the same vein, filling the mouth with ripe but fresh fruit, leading to a tingling vibrant finish. Drink 2020-2028.


Red

SaNTENaY

This is quite delicious. With a bright, rich purple appearance, and a nose that shows raspberry purée and real energy, this is a middleweight wine. Its quality shows on the finish; very good for village. Drink 2017-2021.


maRaNGES, lE CROIx mOINES, 1ER CRU

A fabulous wine from a less well-known appellation, this comes from very old vines set on a steep slope on white marl soil. It offers its usual delightful colour, with impressive concentration, really fresh crystalline notes, huge energy, and a great density of fruit with some cherry notes. Drink 2018-2024.



VOlNaY

Bright, bubbling red with a lively raspberry fruit nose, this is an excellent, mouth-filling wine. It avoids the final firmness seen in some Volnays this year, offering instead some acidity hidden within the fruit. Very persistent. Drink 2018-2022.


SaNTENaY, ClOS ROUSSEaU, 1ER CRU

From an enclave known as Clos des Roches Noires, this boasts a noble, purple colour and a first-rate nose: there’s real class here. One can find a certain opulence in the mouth, with red fruit flesh and very old vines; it tightens up just enough at the back to guarantee safe ageing. Drink 2019-2025.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES ChalaNDINS

A brilliant, fresh, mid purple, this is gorgeous through the middle, with cherries and crushed strawberries, then a briary, smoky finish. Whole-bunch vinification combats the clay here. There’s really good length; this is altogether classy. Drink 2018-2024.


CORTON, lE ClOS DU ROI, GRaND CRU

An excellent, medium deep colour heralds an elegantly fragrant nose, with a great deal behind. This is sensitively handled – it’s by no means a blockbuster and is very sensual in the mouth with a long finish. David’s deft touch with Corton continues. Drink 2020-2028.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, laVaUT SaINT-JaCQUES, 1ER CRU

Made using 50 percent whole-bunch fermentation, this is bright red-purple, with spicy notes amid the lifted floral tones of the bouquet. On the palate, there’s vibrant red fruit along with a savoury spicy texture. Very good length. Drink 2019-2024.


ChaRmES-ChamBERTIN, GRaND CRU

David’s deft hand has produced an elegant Charmes-Chambertin, which is very prettily perfumed, with fine raspberry fruit. Everything is as it should be structurally, with neither acidity nor tannins impeding the succulence of the fruit; this has an agreeably persistent finish. Drink 2019-2025.


ClOS DE la ROChE, GRaND CRU

New for us in 2014, this is a discreet glowing mid-purple in the glass. A lovely svelte wine, it has savoury fruit on the nose, which continues through the palate towards a classy, deep-fruited finish. This is very well balanced, an excellent example of Clos de la Roche. Drink 2021-2029.


ChamBERTIN, GRaND CRU

When tasted in November this was very backward, with blackcurrant leaf notes; on the palate, however, there was really energetic, vibrant fruit, with huge density, lovely texture and a reverberating finish. This will develop into a great wine. Drink 2022-2030.

SYlVaIN DEBORD

domaine de Bellene

Having set up as a négociant in 1997, famed Burgundian winemaker Nicolas Potel branched out by creating his own domaine in 2007, renamed Domaine de Bellene from the following vintage. The domaine is housed in marvellous old cellars, renovated to an ecologically admirable standard (‘Haute Qualité Environnementale’), on the Dijon road out of Beaune. The vineyards have been converted to organic farming, with some biodynamic elements. The man in charge on the technical side is Sylvain Debord.

These are concentrated wines at Domaine de Bellene this year, and the vintage reminds Nicolas Potel of 1991. The wines came in with correct sugar levels, around 12.5 percent, and perfect acidities; they were vinified for a full month with minimal intervention, using whole bunches for the senior wines. The wines were due for bottling in early December.

Red

SaVIGNY-lèS-BEaUNE, VIEIllES VIGNES

Fine, fresh and red-purple in the glass, this has attractive, accessible fruit on the nose. On the palate, this has lovely bright raspberry notes and a very good acid balance. Enough structure behind for medium-term longevity. Drink 2018-2023.


BEaUNE, lES GRèVES, 1ER CRU

From vines planted in 1904 comes this very dense, concentrated, fruit-rich purple wine. There’s some dryness from the stems and an immense weight of fruit on the palate. This is a really impressive expression of Beaune, marrying the seductive quality of the vintage with the intensity of old vines. Drink 2020-2030.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES QUaRTIERS DE NUITS

From vines planted in 1927, this is fine, bright purple in the glass. On the palate it is fresh, agreeable and very lively with more minerals than tannins or acidity. This is fine-boned Vosne, with good ripeness of both fruit and stems. Very persistent. Drink 2019-2026.


NUITS-ST GEORGES, aUx ChaIGNOTS, 1ER CRU

Rich purple in colour, with a fine, concentrated nose, this has a marvellous density of fruit, a wealth of plums and deep raspberries. The stems bring up a drier finish. This has lots of structure and is very impressive. Drink 2022-2030.



Glorious purple, this is floral yet with heady red fruit too. The stems add an element of structure to the wealth of fruit. Then we come to a really magical finish, with a sense of grace. Superb potential. Drink 2022-2030.


White

ST ROmaIN

This is very clear, pale primrose in colour with a beautiful lemon-scented nose. There is both melon and lemon on the palate, which is very pure and delicious, clear and crisp with a superb finish. Overall, a beautiful, pure wine. Drink 2016-2019.

NICOlaS POTEl

Maison Roche de Bellene

Nicolas Potel decided to set up his own négociant business after the death of his father in 1996 and the subsequent sale of Domaine de la Pousse d’Or which his father had been managing. He sold the business to the Cottin brothers in 2004, but parted company with his new owners in spring 2009. Instead he has developed his own Maison Roche de Bellene in Beaune, an excellent source of predominantly red wines, from Bourgogne Rouge to the Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits. His hallmark has been to make wines which respect both their vineyard provenance and the style of the vintage while remaining attractively priced.

“A vintage of pure happiness,” enthuses Nicolas Potel. He rightly retains enthusiasm for Burgundy as a whole and his own wines in particular, though his life has been made more difficult by the explosion of prices for grapes on the open market. However these cuvées make sense to us: we tasted a wide range and picked out the plums.

White

mEURSaUlT, lES ChEValIèRES

Pale lemon-yellow, with a lemon verbena nose, this is really fine and balanced on the palate, with good fruit weight. There is a little touch of graphite helping to retain a mineral freshness. Drink 2017-2021.


Red

VOlNaY, CUVéE RéSERVE

Medium red, this has a slightly inky nose and a bit of graphite. Good, ripe, red fruit on the palate becomes quite succulent in the glass with attractive, dark fruit and some length. This wine has avoided the dry tannins which can result from too much extraction. Drink 2018-2022.


CORTON, lE ROGNET, GRaND CRU

Glowing purple, with vigorous raspberry fruit, there is lots of energy here; the result of smart winemaking on fine terroir. There is good fruit-to-acid balance, and the wine is certainly very lively at the finish, with excellent fruit weight. Drink 2019-2026.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES BEaUx mONTS, 1ER CRU

Medium deep, bright purple with a healthy heady nose, the use of some whole bunches adds a touch of zest. There follows good, ripe, berry fruit, lively and attractive, more raspberry than strawberry in flavour. The acidity is well harnessed, and the finish admirably persistent. This offers remarkable value in 2014. Drink 2019-2026.



EChézEaUx, GRaND CRU

Dense, ripe purple with an exuberant nose, this offers a full, richly fruited mouthful, with attractive detail, weight and good length. The oak is integrating nicely. A very pretty, floral style of Echézeaux. Drink 2020-2026.


ChamBERTIN, ClOS DE BèzE, GRaND CRU

This was our pick between the Clos de Bèze and the Chambertin this year. Middleweight, this has bright, elegant fruit on its refined nose. The wine is attractive, floral, graceful through the middle, then comes up nicely behind. Notably floral, and very persistent. Drink 2022-2030.

Joseph drouhin Maison Louis Jadot

OriginallyfromtheYonnedepartment,Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company which bears his name in 1880. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards including the famous Beaune Clos des Mouches. His successor Robert Drouhin has now passed on management to his children Frédéric (managing director), Laurent (export markets), Philippe (vineyards) and Véronique (oenology). Philippe manages the vineyards biodynamically while Véronique is supported by oenologist Jérome Faure-Brac and chef de cave Mélanie Sire.

“To sum up: summer weather in spring, autumn weather in summer, and then back to summer in September.” Picking started on 12th September and continued for two weeks with respectable yields overall, but once again there was very little fruit in the Beaune vineyards such as Clos des Mouches. The Drouhin style is perfectly attuned to the character of 2014 reds, while this is definitely the best range we have ever seen of white wines here.

The house of Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 though the family had previously been vignerons in the region, acquiring their famous Clos des Ursules in 1826. The company is today run by Pierre-Henry Gagey, while Frédéric Barnier replaced veteran winemaker Jacques Lardière in 2013. Louis Jadot owns more than 60ha of vineyard, many of them Premier and Grand Cru. Recent developments have included the establishment of the tonnellerie Cadus in Ladoix-Serrigny and expansion of the modern winery facilities on the Route de Savigny, with a new white-wine vinification centre completed in 2009.

Frédéric Barnier believes that the harvest was saved by the fine weather at the end of August and the month of September. The reds were more in advance than the whites until the last moment and fermentations went really well, with early malolactics. PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET

Blended from eight plots covering all parts of the village, this has lifted, fresh fruit with some pear notes, pervasive fruit right across the palate, exceptionally persistent with impeccable acid balance. Drink 2018-2022.


ChaSSaGNE-mONTRaChET, mORGEOT, 1ER CRU, maRQUIS DE laGUIChE

Fine pale colour, with a striking, powerful nose, this is very classic, with huge energy – a chiselled block of marble. Absolutely magnificent in the mouth, it has tiny coconut notes but tear-jerking fruit, white with green notes, amazing detail and huge length: what is not to love? Drink 2020-2026.


mONTRaChET, GRaND CRU, maRQUIS DE laGUIChE

This is also everything it should be, and more. Floral to some extent, with magically intense fruit, which keeps growing on the nose. It has sublime concentration, huge density, lively and dancing, with strong shoulders, yet a perfectly formed waistline, and muscular energy throughout. Drink 2024-2035.


Red

CôTE DE BEaUNE

Some fruit comes from the top of the hill above Beaune, while the majority is declassified Premier Cru fruit from young vines or small plots. Pure red-purple colour, this has tightly knit, fine, deep, red fruit with a lovely thread of acidity. A delicious and affordable red Burgundy. Drink 2018-2022.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, 1ER CRU

This is one of a series of sublime Chambolles from Drouhin this year. Pure, pale purple, this has a refined and elegant nose, with delicious, lifted, raspberry notes. Tightly knit yet with beautiful intensity, the 2014 is pure and crunchy, very fine boned, with perfect texture and persistence. Drink 2020-2026.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES CazETIERS, 1ER CRU

Fine mid-purple, Les Cazetiers has very attractive, wild-cherry fruit, with floral notes, impressive density and a strong mineral crunch too. The fruit sweeps all the way to the back of the palate. Drink 2020-2028.

FRéDéRIC WEBER

Maison Bouchard Père & Fils

Bouchard Père & Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 Champagne entrepreneur Joseph Henriot acquired the company. The wines are made by technical director Philippe Prost, who has been with the company since 1978, and Frédéric Weber, cellar master. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuverie St Vincent, was completed in 2005, enabling them, to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130ha, including 12ha of Grands Crus and 74ha of Premiers Crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

Frédéric Weber has taken over prime winemaking responsibilities from Philippe Prost. He shares with his predecessor the ability to talk eloquently about his wines, with an excellent knowledge of each terroir. One change here is the increasing use of whole bunches during fermentation, though more in the Côte de Nuits than Côte de Beaune this year. Overall, these are excellent wines.

White

PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, FOlaTIèRES

Displaying a fine and fresh colour, this Folatières has a tight and complex nose, leavened by a little perfume. There is lovely energy to this on the palate, a fine, fruit-laden mouthful, and impressive persistence. Drink 2020-2024.


ChEValIER-mONTRaChET, lES DEmOISEllES, GRaND CRU

Fine, bright, clear colour; this has a deeply impressive nose, the oak sitting lightly on the fruit, suave and svelte, still very backward, yet the fruit stretches brilliantly right across the palate – and lingers. An exceptionally graceful Chevalier-Montrachet. Drink 2022-2039.


Red

EChEzEaUx, GRaND CRU, DOmaINE GaGEY

Medium deep colour, with a lighter rim, this has a very elegant nose, with rather haunting and intricate detail. Lifted and ethereal, this is a beautiful expression of Echezeaux from the Rouges du Bas lieu-dit. Drink 2022-2028.


ClOS ST DENIS, GRaND CRU, DOmaINE GaGEY

Fine, bright, if pale colour, with lovely, vibrant fruit and plenty of energy; this is absolutely delicious with some sultry silkiness, classic Clos St Denis. Very persistent, not a heavyweight. Drink 2022-2028.


White

mEURSaUlT, PERRIèRES, 1ER CRU

From three plots located throughout Perrières, this has a touch of pale lemon in terms of colour, bright fresh fruit on the nose, interesting saline complexity and some yellow plums. With excellent acidity behind, this is very pleasing, lively and lemony. Drink 2019-2026.


ChEValIER-mONTRaChET, la CaBOTTE, GRaND CRU

Pure bright primrose in colour, with an extraordinary nose, this is notably weightier than the regular Chevalier-Montrachet, with more yellow fruit and florals. This develops into a sensational glowing mouthful, with perfect fruit, mineral-acid balance and of course persistence. Just four barrels this year. Drink 2022-2030.


mONTRaChET, GRaND CRU

Clear, bright and pale in colour, this combines majesty with discretion. It is a superbly floral offering with ethereal, lifted fruit. BEaUNE, GRèVES, VIGNE DE l'ENFaNT JéSUS, 1ER CRU

Old vines in the gravelly lower part of this plot are vinified first with whole bunches; the upper part is then picked and mostly de-stemmed. The two together offer a dense black purple colour and fabulously rich fruit on the nose. A huge volume of swelling, dark fruit follows on the palate, along with more lifted red fruit character. This is very lovely, with no sign of tough tannins. Drink 2019-2024.


lE CORTON

East-facing below the Charlemagne holding, this was one of the last wines to be picked. Intense purple in colour, this displays a fresh nose – clear cut and mineral. It is very intense but not too muscular, good with grape tannins and fresh hillside acidity. Very persistent. Drink 2020-2026.


ChamBERTIN, ClOS-DE-BèzE, GRaND CRU

Although not a domaine wine, this is harvested from the same 1ha plot each year. It offers a pretty, medium-deep purple colour, with an attractive but discreet nose. It begins delicately, then opens out to a significant volume of fruit, with just a touch of pepper behind. This is graceful yet intense with amazing persistence. Excellent. Drink 2022-2030.

SYlVaIN lOIChET

Sylvain Loichet

The Loichets come from Comblanchien at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits, as well known for its marble quarrying industry as for its vines. Indeed the previous two generations of Loichets have been stone masons rather than vignerons but they kept ownership of their vineyards such as Clos de Vougeot and Ladoix which the talented Sylvain has taken back. He has moved operations to a beautiful 18th-century manor house in Chorey-lès-Beaune and has expanded the range of wines on offer.

This was a near-perfect harvest for Sylvain, with scarcely any need to sort the healthy grapes, and better volumes across the piece apart from a little hail in Ladoix. He has cut back on his négociant activities and all the wines below are from his own domaine. The whites are predictably beautiful this year and the reds much less reductive than in the past.

White

laDOIx, BOIS DE GRéChONS

The wine from this monopole is clear, pure and fresh in colour, with a green tint. This has a very pure, chiselled nose, then the perfumed exotic fruits, Muscat and peach notes emerge behind. There is lovely flesh which is nicely balanced by the acidity and a very long, perfumed finish. This is a very complete wine, in its fascinating, idiosyncratic way. Very satisfying. Drink 2017-2020.


laDOIx, lES GRéChONS, 1ER CRU

With a fine, pale, straw colour, this has a richer riper nose than the village wine. Some oak, a little apple and apricot: this is full-bodied and quite exotic, with some fresh minerals behind. It is crisp at the back despite the weight. Drink 2018-2022.



Made from a blend of En Charlemagne and Le Corton, this has a fine, pale colour with a faint straw tint, and some green hints. The nose shows Grand Cru quality while remaining discreet. Subtle notes of ripe fruit, some peach and a little bit of banana give way to rich fruit and some powerful structure which does not yet quite knit together. There is a huge amount of weight here and this will all integrate. Drink 2020-2026.

CôTE DE NUITS VIllaGES, aUx mONTaGNES

Bright glowing purple, the nose is discreet but shows a potential wealth of fruit. Very attractive, this has rounded dark raspberry fruits, with a little bit of structure behind for the ageing process. An excellent finish completes the wine. Drink 2017-2020.


CôTE DE NUITS VIllaGES, EN ChaNTEmERlE

Sylvain enthuses about the quality of the Pinot Noir Fin vines on riparia rootstock here. They produce very small bunches and grapes. Rich, ripe, purple, this has explosive fruit: a bit of blackberry though still predominantly red fruit (raspberry in particular). There is excellent density on the palate, with dark fruit, a little blackcurrant leaf, excellent structure and a little mineral crunch. This is mouth-filling and delicious. Drink 2017-2021.

domaine Follin-Arbelet

Franck Follin-Arbelet has created an estate in Aloxe-Corton where his ancestors used to have vineyards in the late 19th century, before they were subsequently sold off. As a child he spent holidays in the village, working part time in the vineyards and in due course marrying a local girl whose family had some vines – enough for Franck to set up as a vigneron in 1993, subsequently adding further vines through rental agreements.

Franck Follin-Arbelet reports a relatively small crop, after a difficult flowering (too hot and dry) and some hail in Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. Nonetheless the grapes resisted the damp middle of the summer well and ripened properly at the end. Harvest began on 13th September and though the sorting table was needed to remove hail damage and dried grapes, the results here are very successful in 2014.

White


Pure and pale in colour, with a magical glowing intensity of white fruit, some lemon and lime notes and a great stony purity – indeed the precision of the detail is spectacular. This has lovely flesh, perfect balance and is very fine indeed. Drink 2020-2028.

alOxE-CORTON, lES VERCOTS, 1ER CRU

Franck’s Aloxe-Corton has a dense purple core and some firmly concentrated fruit. Very promising: this should be a keeper. It offers concentrated, deep red fruit, a classical, firm structure and excellent persistence. Drink 2019-2024.


CORTON-BRESSaNDES, GRaND CRU

Fine, bright medium pink-purple in the glass, there is good stuffing to this. It has a solid bouquet with a good concentration of red fruit. It starts strict but then the fruit swells on the palate, with a generous intensity, all held in place by a firm structure. Drink 2020-2028.

PIERRE VINCENT

domaine de la Vougeraie

Based in Premeaux just south of Nuits-St Georges, Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999 when Jean-Claude Boisset decided to group together all the vineyard holdings of the various négociant companies he had acquired over the years. Pascal Marchand was put in charge in 1999, with Bernard Zito in the vineyards, which are farmed biodynamically. Pascal produced powerful wines, fairly heavily extracted in his early vintages but clearly moving to a softer style by 2004. The wines have been made subsequently by Pierre Vincent who has maintained the more delicate approach. Top-quality vineyards continue to be added, especially Grand Cru whites in recent vintages.

The domaine has developed its white wine holdings, with four new cuvées this year, arising out of Boisset’s purchase of Vincent Girardin’s business. Girardin had farming arrangements in Puligny-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain Premier Cru, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru and a tiny holding of Chevalier-Montrachet: Monsieur Boisset has now bought these vineyards. As well as these excellent whites, Pierre Vincent considers 2014 to be one of his best red wine vintages, with something in common with 2006 and 2010.

White

PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET

The fruit used here comes from the Noyers Bret and Rue de Vache vineyards. There is a tiny bit of hazelnut alongside spring flowers. Juicy yet refined, the palate has pure white fruit, excellent energy and a long finish. Drink 2018-2022.


VOUGEOT, ClOS DU PRIEURé

Pure, pale colour, this is quite stylish with lovely gunflint and more character than we have ever seen before. Juicy and mineral, it makes one salivate, filled with really pretty white fruit. Well worth looking at. Drink 2018-2024.


PUlIGNY-mONTRaChET, ChamP GaIN, 1ER CRU

This new (to the domaine) Premier Cru has a discreet bouquet, then a fine rich mouthful, with white fruit and some flowers, exemplary length and lovely acid balance. Drink 2019-2025.


VOUGEOT, lE ClOS BlaNC DE VOUGEOT, 1ER CRU

Pure, glowing white with a pale yellow tinge, this is – as always – one of Burgundy's great white wines. There is a lovely layer of flesh and fruit, a marvellous intense backbone and a generous, almost smoky, intensely long finish. Beneficial reduction is woven in throughout. Drink 2019-2026.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES EVOCEllES

Glorious purple, the nose is layered with deliciously rich cherries, more fruit than stems. There is an appealing structure to this, dancing heady fruit and good freshness. A fine vineyard, well interpreted. Drink 2019-2024.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY

This is sourced from seven plots, including 25 percent Premier Cru fruit from Gruenchers and Baudes. Medium deep, bright purple with a marvellously sensual aroma, this is very succulent in the mouth with the stems (65 percent) adding a lively touch to the finish, and a little strawberry in the background. Drink 2019-2024.


NUITS-ST GEORGES, ClOS DE ThOREY, 1ER CRU

Medium deep red-purple, this has beautiful elegance for a Nuits-St Georges; a really graceful wine which also has impressive density. Very lovely. Drink 2020-2026.


ClOS DE VOUGEOT, GRaND CRU

Bright, fresh purple, the Vougeraie Clos de Vougeot is very tightly wound, with lifted fruit, spice and high-quality raspberry notes. There is exactly the right structure behind, just enough to support the fruit which dances across the palate. Pierre Vincent’s fine touch at its best. Drink 2022-2030.


CÔTE DE NUITS Nuits-St Georges

ChaRlEmaGNE, GRaND CRU

Made with fruit from En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne, this has a pale colour with green tints and a smoky, reductive nose. This starts as really backward but the stony minerality soon begins to leap out. Underneath lies a really brilliant wine, and the desired minerals certainly show through. Drink 2020-2028.



This wine was in a very backward state when we tasted in November, so the detail of the fruit was not evident; however the desired weight of fruit is certainly there. It has an enormous concentration on the palate, completed by sparkling acidity and energy. Potentially mind-blowing. Drink 2022-2030.


BIENVENUES-BâTaRD-mONTRaChET, GRaND CRU

Pure, bright colour, there is a touch of beneficial reduction, while demonstrating the softer approach of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet compared to neighbouring Bâtard. This is a graceful, ethereal wine, absolutely singing; with the flowers, fruit and minerals all perfectly blended in. Enormously long and really seductive. Drink 2020-2029.


Red

VOUGEOT, ClOS DU PRIEURé

This is a beautiful, pure purple with a very heady, lifted, floral note (having undergone 75 percent whole-bunch vinification). Elegance personified, this is really stylish, not heavy but classy. Fine, perfumed red Burgundy. Drink 2018-2024.

PaTRICE RION

Patrice Rion

Patrice Rion and his wife Michèle began their own small domaine in 1990 with just two wines, Bourgogne Rouge, Les Bons Bâtons and Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras, while Patrice was still working as winemaker with his family at Domaine Daniel Rion. In 2000 Patrice left the family business to develop his own estate further. Today most of the vineyards are in Nuits-St Georges and Chambolle-Musigny. Patrice has recently been joined in the business by son Maxime.

Patrice Rion compares 2014 to a mix of 1979 and 1989 for the aromatics and delighted to have been able to pick a more or less normal-sized crop. He began on 12th September with healthy grapes, reinforced by his system of two sorting tables, one before and one after de-stemming. The amount of new oak has been reduced here, now just 30 percent on most cuvées.

This is 10 percent Pinot Blanc, 90 percent Chardonnay; clear, bright and fresh with an absolutely beautiful nose displaying white flowers. There is a huge volume of fruit on the palate, with good acidity behind and really charming, dancing fruit. Drink 2018-2024.

From Les Plateaux vineyard, this has a bright mid-purple colour, with attractive chewy, dark cherry fruit, sinewy on the palate, more red fruit than plum, with a deft little touch of oak. Drink 2019-2025.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, VIEIllES VIGNES

This typical Chambolle offers a lovely perfume, very floral with cherries and raspberries. The Chambolle character follows through on the lovely, silky finish. There is also a fine mineral thread, since half the fruit comes from the top of the slope, above Le Musigny. Drink 2019-2025.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, lES CRaS, DOmaINE mIChèlE & PaTRICE RION

From the village part of the vineyard, with southerly exposure, this is quite a pale pink-purple colour, with a beautifully stylish nose; some minerality as well as Chambolle suavity. There is pretty red fruit, with lots of detail. The wine has good acidity, while the fruit comes bouncing back at the finish. Drink 2019-2027.

A beautiful, bright purple, this has lifted fruit on the nose. Full of energy, there is a beautiful density to the dark, raspberry fruit; very good intensity of flavour through the middle and a lovely finish with a bevy of little red berries lingering on the palate. Glowing pink-purple, Les Fuées has a very elegant, fresh cherry nose. Very positive, there is a good “attack” and then the fruit builds marvellously to the back. This is pretty, with a very long finish and creamy texture. Drink 2020-2028.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, lES amOUREUSES, 1ER CRU

Quite a pale pink-purple, this is discreet at first, but then it suddenly begins to sing. It continues through the mid-palate to a very clean, long, perfumed finish. An Amoureuses of finesse more than exuberance. Drink 2020-2028.


BONNES maRES, GRaND CRU

Only one barrel of this wine is made for the whole world, from 40-year-old vines. With a bright, fresh purple colour, this has an attractive touch of wildness on the nose, typical of Bonnes Mares, with a wealth of fruit behind, a perfect balance of acidity, and excellent length. Drink 2020-2030.

domaine Faiveley domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Domaine Faiveley is one of the biggest domains in Burgundy with 115ha of vines. The company has been based in Nuits-St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by the first François, Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, François who has recently retired and now his son Erwan, born in 1979. The change of generation has dynamised the business. Already there has been a notable expansion of vineyards under Faiveley’s control with the taking over of Domaines Annick Parent, Monnot and Matrot-Wittersheim in the Côte de Beaune, as well as Dupont-Tisserandot (Gevrey) and Billaud-Simon (Chablis). Old-style Faiveley wines could be massively tannic at the expense of the fruit. From 2007, the wines are much fresher and fruitier, yet still with real intensity.

Erwan Faiveley believes that 2014 would be regarded as a great vintage – if only 2015 had not come along to trump it. He feels that the changes which have taken place in the cellar since 2007 have had a discernible effect on the quality of Faiveley wines, while similar qualitative changes in the vineyard are only now bearing fruit. Here, balanced but restricted yields are the key.

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is based at the Château de Chambolle-Musigny which has been in the Mugnier family since 1863. In 1985 Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation of the family on the property, took over, though he combined running the family domaine with his job as an airline pilot until 1998. Now he concentrates solely on the domaine, where consistency has improved as a result, and from 2004 he has also taken back the Nuits-St Georges Clos de la Maréchale vineyard, on lease to Faiveley since 1950. Only the Clos de la Maréchale is offered at this stage of the year.

Frédéric notes that the grapes were very healthy in 2014, with a “correct” yield, lower than 2009 but the best since then. In any case, Frédéric aims to stay below 35 hl/ha, so the wines will always have a desirable intensity. This being a given, the style here reflects the light hand of the winemaker, with minimal extraction during vinification.

White

mEURSaUlT, ChaRmES, 1ER CRU

A fine, pale yellow colour, full of fruit with a lovely vibrant thread, some lime notes running through the white fruit, with some yellow floral points as well. Delicious refreshing finish. Drink 2019-2024.



Very pretty, this is faint yellow with a green touch. It has huge weight through the middle, lemon balm combined with lovely minerals. Lively but still classic, certainly an exceptional aftertaste. Drink 2022-2028.


Red

NUITS-ST GEORGES, lES PORêTS-SaINT-GEORGES, 1ER CRU

From Faiveley’s first vineyard, which was purchased in the 1830s, comes this lovely, bright, mid-red purple wine. It’s very perfumed with some delicious ripe cherries; this is very pure, precise and refined on the palate with a very persistent finish. Drink 2021-2026.


POmmaRD, lES RUGIENS, 1ER CRU

This has a vivid, pink-purple colour and bright red fruit. Up front, it is perfumed and seductive; behind it is brisk with some blood orange from the iron in the soil. The finish is very persistent. Just four barrels were made from half a hectare. Drink 2021-2026.


CÔTE DE NUITS Nuits-St Georges

GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, la COmBE aUx mOINES, 1ER CRU

Faiveley has brought the yields down here, now obtaining intensity while retaining seduction. This is bright purple in colour with a lively seductive nose; there are some black fruit notes, quite a strict savoury character and good tannins behind to keep the wine complex. The finish is persistent. Drink 2022-2028.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, aUx BEaUx BRUNS, 1ER CRU

Full, pure pink-purple, with a very typical Chambolle perfume, this is smooth and delicious with deep raspberry fruit and a touch of acidity alongside the fine tannins. An excellent wine. Drink 2021-2028.


CORTON, ClOS DES CORTONS FaIVElEY, GRaND CRU

The crop here was small, partly due to hail and partly because of the old vines. This is rich, dark purple with a sensational density of fruit on the nose, huge volumes in the mouth and good oak integration. There’s dark raspberry and some black cherry, with acidity woven in absolutely as it should be. Magical. Drink 2022-2030.


éChEzEaUx, GRaND CRU

A bright, glowing purple, with a fresh and classy nose and an astonishing intensity on the palate this manages to maintain the fine latticework of this appellation. Pure, intense and persistent. Drink 2022-2028.



Brilliant purple, very dense, with a wealth of concentrated red fruit on the nose, this starts quietly then builds enormously to the back of the palate. It’s suave and delicious, with a classical, peacock's tail finish fanning out at the back. Drink 2022-2030.

domaine thibault Liger-Belair

In 2001 Thibault took over an old family property in Nuits-St Georges reclaiming the vines, which had been contracted out to various share croppers, and leased a cuverie just down the road. The family jewels (his branch) consist of Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot and Nuits-St Georges Les St Georges, to which he has added further vineyards and a few cuvées made from purchased grapes. The vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically, with horses used to plough the vineyards where possible. The oak regime is not to exceed 50 percent new barrels and also not to use any barrels more than three years old.

Thibault has made a fine and elegant range of 2014s, with little sign of the reduction which has sometimes prevailed here in the past. He has employed a fair proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, sending a crack team of pickers into the vineyards ahead of the rest to select the healthiest bunches. Another interest at the moment lies in finding the perfect toasting for his barrels, often choosing a minimal approach. We shall also be making a separate offer of Thibault’s brilliant 2014s from his Moulin à Vent estate.

Bright, fresh purple with good density; this has a beautiful, pure, racy bouquet. There is a wonderful sweetness of fruit across the palate, with a coating of velvet, then a gentler, graceful finish. Drink 2020-2026.

Fifty percent whole bunches have been employed here to avoid earthiness from the predominantly clay soil. A crisp mid-purple, this has a leafy, ethereal bouquet and lovely red fruit flavours, with plenty of raspberry. Backed by fine acidity, this has excellent persistence. Drink 2019-2024.


NUITS-SaINT GEORGES, la ChaRmOTTE

Thibault particularly likes the clay limestone mix in the soil here. The wine has attractive succulent fruit, juicy through the middle, with perfect acid balance. This was really successful this year. Drink 2019-2024.


alOxE-CORTON, la TOPPE aU VERT, 1ER CRU

Thibault describes this wine as “light but not thin”. It is much finer-boned than other, sturdier, archetypal Aloxe-Cortons. It is a beautiful, pure, light red colour; really elegant and stylish, with sweet, ripe fruit. It is indeed light on its toes. Drink 2019-2025.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, aUx RéaS

Pure, bright purple, this has a very perfumed nose with a mite of mineral reduction. Relatively fine-boned, yet with deceptive concentration; this is quite backward, but there is a great deal in reserve here. Drink 2019-2026.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, lES GRUENChERS, 1ER CRU

A pale purple, this has an elegant, stylish, deep cherry-fruit bouquet. With plenty of weight on the mid-palate, this is very sensual, respecting its Chambolle origins. Drink 2020-2026.



NUITS-ST GEORGES, lES SaINT GEORGES, 1ER CRU

This glows with a beautiful purple colour and a nose laden with really heady fruit. The wine has marvellous energy right through the middle, light on its feet, yet sinewy and concentrated. It really fills every part of the mouth. Drink 2020-2028.



With fruit sourced from old vines, dating back to the 1940s, 40 percent undergoes whole-bunch fermentation, with the main stems removed and a deliberate raw toast on the barrels. The wine shows lovely red cherry and cream, lifted and charming. With good fresh fruit on the palate, this isn’t a blockbuster. A thread of acidity defines the finish. Drink 2020-2028.



Thibault thinks that his holding covers all the soil types of Clos de Vougeot: limestone, then red and brown clay, then white clay and silt. The 2014 is a fresh and lifted version of Clos de Vougeot, yet has great intensity. There is deep raspberry fruit, and notable charm. Drink 2022-2030.

SéBaSTIEN CaThIaRDClaIRE NaUDIN

Sylvain Cathiard & Filsdomaine naudin-Ferrand

Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather, a foundling from Savoie, came to work in Vosne-Romanée, subsequently buying a few parcels of vineyards for himself. His father André Cathiard began to bottle some of the crop. In due course Sylvain began work with his father, but then separated to start his own small domaine: on his father’s retirement in 1995, Sylvain took back the family vineyards on a renting agreement. He has now passed the domaine on to his son Sébastien, and a spacious new cellar has been constructed.

In the vineyard Sébastien has been moving towards an organic approach. In the cellar, while vinification remains broadly similar, much less new wood is being used during élévage: the village cuvées have been reduced to 50 percent and the crus to two thirds, with a slightly lighter toast being employed in the barrels. All the wines are so much more elegant with less new wood. The 2014 vintage is lovely here.

Claire Naudin, one of Henri Naudin-Ferrand’s three daughters, has been in charge since 1994 of this small domaine based in the Hautes Côtes at Magny-les-Villers, a village that sits astride the dividing line between Hautes Côtes de Beaune and Hautes Côtes de Nuits. Claire is relatively susceptible to sulphur and uses the product as little as possible. Her most exciting wines are those which are vinified with whole bunches (all the stems) and without sulphur, though some SO2 is added at bottling to ensure that the wines remain stable thereafter. Claire’s theory, which her wines bear out admirably, is that there is none of the harshness sometimes evident when the bunches are vinified with their stems if sulphur is not used. Instead a magical floral perfume emanates from the wine.

Claire Naudin is increasingly happy with her 2014s. Not only did she make 80 percent of a full crop, much better than in recent years, but the wines have been shaping up really nicely in barrel. The tannins are rounding out pleasantly. Some sorting against rot was necessary, but the resulting wines are very healthy. NUITS-ST GEORGES

After the typically concentrated purple colour, the rich nose offers scented blueberry, with opulent fruit on the palate and some wood tannins which integrate nicely. Extra concentration here. Drink 2019-2024.

Purple, concentrated fruit, this offers a lovely, graceful, Chambolle feel, less concentrated than the Nuits but more elegant, with a delicious volume of fruit right across the palate. Drink 2019-2024.



Rich, bright purple, with dense black fruit and plum notes on the nose, this is very concentrated without being heavy. It has a lovely mineral thread, and a little youthful astringence; very poised and classy. Drink 2020-2026.

Again a dense deep purple, with concentrated fruit, both red and black, there is nothing heavy-handed here. This is delicious, elegant yet intense, showing perfect integration of acidity and great persistence. Sébastien is coming of age! Drink 2020-2028.

domaine Jean Grivot

Jean Grivot, whose name continues to appear on the labels, took over from his father Gaston in 1955 and handed on to his son Étienne in the early 1980s. Étienne, married to Marielle Bize from Savigny, has been through a number of incarnations as winemaker here. When he took over, his father’s style was for gentle, graceful wines which perhaps were a little weak in the lesser vintages. Étienne wanted to produce something more concentrated and started working with the controversial oenologist Guy Accad from 1987 to 1992. Since then Étienne has found his own voice and made a range of increasingly fine wines. The drive to reduce yields and fine-tune his work in the vineyards and cellar since the mid-2000s continues to enhance quality. The next generation, Mathilde and Hubert, are now working with their parents.

Étienne Grivot reports better yields in 2014, about halfway between the miserable crops of the previous four vintages and what would count as a very good year. The grapes are de-stemmed but preserved fully intact using the newest model of de-stemmer. They were totally healthy in 2014 and Mathilde Grivot describes the wines as being accessible, fresh, yet still complex. We would add that they are – yet again – amongst the finest of the whole Côte.

Lovely purple, without being too concentrated, there are some dark fruit flavours on the nose of this fine, classical wine, with super purity, incredible class, length and a very pure finish. Drink 2019-2025.

A fine, dense, red-purple colour and a classical Vosne-Romanée nose: how else to describe it? The fruit swells to the back of the palate, with such poise, such presence, charm and precision. Absolutely beautiful. Drink 2019-2025.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, la COmBE D'ORVEaUx

Mid-purple-red, with a little oak on the nose, this has soft graceful fruit. It is easy-going with a fine, leavening touch of acidity behind to keep it fresh. This works very well. Drink 2019-2025.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES ROUGES, 1ER CRU

This cuvée has gained in intensity over the last few years as it can now be ploughed by horse. Mid-purple in colour, this delivers a fine-boned, hillside style of Vosne-Romanée which is “now attaining serenity”, according to Étienne. Lovely precise yet sensual finish. Drink 2020-2028.


NUITS-ST GEORGES, lES RONCIèRES, 1ER CRU

Fine, bright, deep purple, this has a touch of oak a long with suave deep fruit. There are damsons – sweet, ripe and juicy – yet such a fresh, uncomplicated finish. This will be thrilling in the medium term. Drink 2022-2030.

With a similar, noble, purple colour to Les Roncières, this has vibrant, dark red fruit rather than plums on the nose. Les Pruliers has greater density than Les Roncières, displaying real depth of fruit. It has a lovely finish, easy and charming but also magisterial. Drink 2022-2032.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES BEaUx mONTS, 1ER CRU

Pure, penetrating purple, this has a magical nose, very lifted. The fruit sits on the cusp of red but perhaps a touch more black, precisely defined, good tannins behind, and enough acidity. Another magisterial wine from this domaine which is on such great form in recent vintages. Drink 2022-2030.



Brilliant, dark, intense, purple fruit; this has a wealth of damson and fresh mulberry, a huge weight of fruit, yet still very much in balance. This is wonderfully dense in the mouth, more black fruit in style, a really intense, beautiful wine with mineral crunch. Drink 2022-2034.



This is pure purple, with a discreet, gently fruity nose; all in elegance, style, precision. The class tiptoes across every part of the palate. Supple, subtle, sublime. Drink 2022-2030.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, EN ORVEaUx, 1ER CRU

Brilliant pure purple, this is a dramatic, singing wine, with real lift and exuberance up front which then continues across the palate. Having intensity without undue weight, this has a beautiful aromatic profile of dark red fruits, and a lovely finish. Very impressive. Drink 2020-2028.



Dense purple with a darker centre, this has a glorious, heady, yet still subtle nose. It has lovely energy at the front, followed by the usual discreet middle, then a fine, lingering, red-fruit finale, with perfect fruit and acid integration, finishing on the minerals. Drink 2020-2028.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, aUx malCONSORTS, 1ER CRU

Because the malolactic fermentation was very late, this is the most backward wine in the cellar. Nonetheless it shows a brilliant, dense, purple colour, with a brooding bouquet, huge weight of fruit on the palate and excellent structure, but it will take more time for everything to fall into place, which will surely happen. Drink 2022-2030.

NaThalIE lamaRChE

domaine Lamarche

Domaine Lamarche today produces 14 different wines from 11ha. Ancestors of the Lamarche family were already living in the village of Vosne-Romanée in 1740, though the domaine was really established in the early 20th century. Henri Lamarche, born in 1903, received La Grande Rue in 1933 as a wedding present. Henri was succeeded by his son François and now his grand-daughters, Nicole in charge of winemaking and Nathalie on the marketing side. As well as more meticulous work in the vineyards, better barrel selection and a new cuverie (since 2000) have combined to make this a fine and consistent domaine.

Sadly there is no more wine here than in 2013 after a poor flowering. Nicole Lamarche picked from 16th September until the 22nd, reporting no problems in vinification or élévage and opting for a light touch in vinification, noting that each wine is very different from the others this year. This is another fine range from the Lamarches, offering sensible value for money.

Red

VOSNE-ROmaNéE

The village wine has a fine, full, purple colour, with punchy, heady fruit which is well integrated with the oak on the nose. This makes a really lovely mouthful – not only classy but very seductive with a friendly finish. Drink 2019-2024.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES ChaUmES, 1ER CRU

Another good red-purple colour, this has a fine structural thread running through the easily accessible fruit, with some lively minerals behind. Drink 2020-2026.



Bright and clear in colour, with a superb raspberry fragrance, this is very lifted, offering real intensity and yet a comforting sensual aftertaste. There’s very good length here. Drink 2021-2027.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES malCONSORTS, 1ER CRU

Fragrant purple, this has heady, sweet strawberry fruit – and much more besides. There is an enormous volume of fruit at the front, backed by impressive structure and some attractive minerals. Good length, of course. Drink 2021-2028.


EChEzEaUx, GRaND CRU

Rich and pure purple in colour, this has a little touch of oak and a sumptuous velvet cloaking. The palate is very detailed, yet still with the velvet carpet all the way through to the finish. This is always a favourite cuvée chez Lamarche. Drink 2022-2028.


CÔTE DE NUITS Vosne-Romanée


Palish colour, with fresh red fruit and perhaps a touch of strawberry: there are multiple layers to the fruit here. Although not the ripest example of Clos Vougeot, this lends it a dramatic tension. Very persistent indeed, with excellent fruit and oak integration. Drink 2022-2030.


GRaNDS EChEzEaUx, GRaND CRU

This is a lovely red-purple, pale but distinguished, with beautiful fruit on the nose – it’s extremely classy but understated. On the palate, there’s a wealth of intense but fine and precise red fruit; perfect balance, and a good persistent finish. This is seriously classy. Drink 2022-2030.


la GRaNDE RUE, GRaND CRU

Its refined and un-insistent colour is characteristic of the rest of the range, while the nose is discreet offering a variety of red fruits, including raspberries, which suggests intensity while remaining subtle. This is wonderfully full on the palate, still in its own restrained way, so that you have to let it come to you. But there is a dancing, ethereal magic nonetheless. It needs longer in barrel. Drink 2022-2034.

domaine Guyon

This excellent domaine in Vosne-Romanée has been below most people’s radar – perhaps because Jean-Pierre Guyon spends as much of his time as possible out in the vineyards which have been farmed organically since 2006, certified from 2012. With his high pedigree viticulture as a great starting point, Jean-Pierre can employ whole-bunch fermentation as the stalks are ripe, eschewing the use of sulphur at this stage, though some is added later during élevage and at bottling to assure stability.

We discovered Jean-Pierre Guyon’s amazing wines last year, just in time to offer his 2013s in the summer, so this is his first entry in our en primeur offering. This is a domaine worth discovering, producing intense wines with layers of complexity waiting to unfold. There is no question about the concentration here in 2014 – these are certainly wines for keeping.

SaVIGNY-lèS-BEaUNE, lES PEUIllETS, 1ER CRU

Concentrated purple, some blackcurrant leaf notes complement the richly dense fruit, with good weight and some elegance. The fruit fills the mouth very well, indeed almost with a high-class Côte de Nuits feel to it. The ripe, rounded fruit at the back is complemented by the vibrant stems. Please don’t pass over this because it is called Savigny and not Vosne; it is a really charming wine. Drink 2018-2022.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE

This has a rich, purple colour and a silky, fleshy, Vosne-Romanée nose with violets. Ripe fruit – very attractive, silky and graceful – is followed by a further explosion of fruit, really lifted, red rather than black berries, with dancing, ripe redcurrants. Drink 2019-2024.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES ChaRmES DE mazIèRES

Since 1999 Jean-Pierre has made a separate picking from the 60-year-old vines throughout his plots. The wine is no deeper in colour, but the fruit absolutely swells across the palate, offering gorgeous density and an almost sultry texture along with a perfect, structural acidity behind. A keeper for sure. Drink 2020-2026.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES BRûléES, 1ER CRU

Dense purple with a darker centre, this is lifted and elegant at first. A weight of almost sweet fruit with a little pepperiness is followed by some tannins. Not yet together, but it’s getting into place. Very long and complex. Drink 2020-2028.



VOSNE-ROmaNéE, EN ORVEaUx, 1ER CRU

This wine has extraordinary finesse, delivering fruit and flowers together on the nose, very silky red-purple fruit. The tannins here are beautifully covered by the flesh and an enormously persistent finish. What amazing elegance: this is truly fabulous, cool, precise, and floral. Drink 2020-2028.


ClOS VOUGEOT, GRaND CRU

Ancient vines make a real difference here. The colour is a dense black-purple, and the nose is really concentrated. The wine has broad shoulders but a slim waist, with a touch more oak, but only in a supporting role. There is a real sweetness through the middle and then a crunchy, dark-fruit finish. This will develop into an impressive Clos de Vougeot. Drink 2022-2030.


EChEzEaUx, GRaND CRU

From the bit of En Orveaux which is Grand Cru, this wine has a glorious, full, purple colour. This is complex and satisfying, with a heavenly floral nose – red roses according to Jean-Pierre – then massive intensity for Echezeaux, but with a silky, subtlety as well. The volume of fruit shows again at the back. This has marvellous intensity. Yes please. Drink 2022-2030.

domaine Ghislaine Barthod domaine Louis Boillot

Ghislaine Barthod’s domaine originates in the 1920s with Marcel Noëllat whose daughter married Gaston Barthod, a soldier stationed in Dijon who came to buy some wine and got the girl as well. He gave up military life for the vineyards in 1960. Their daughter, Ghislaine, and her partner Louis Boillot bought their current premises overlooking Premier Cru Les Feusselottes in 1986. Though they share the team who work the vineyards for both of them, the vinification and commercial aspects of their businesses are kept completely separate. The strength of the domaine is the range of Chambolle-Musigny wines, with eight separate Premier Cru bottlings.

As always, Ghislaine gives a very thoughtful, un-mediatised version of the vintage: it was a cool damp summer, there was some rot, sorting was necessary, but afterwards the fruit was healthy. She began picking on Sunday 14th September, when the grapes were just ripe, and still had very good acidity. Ghislaine may be modest about her wines, but we think they are fabulous this year!

Louis Boillot came to Chambolle-Musigny where his partner Ghislaine Barthod is based, from Gevrey-Chambertin, though as his full range of wines indicates, he is descended from the Volnay family of Boillots. He was formerly associated with his brother and father at Domaine Lucien Boillot, but set up on his own from the 2003 vintage. Louis and Ghislaine expect to be joined shortly by their son Clément.

The good thing about having a domaine shared between Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits is that you are unlikely to sustain hail damage in every vineyard in any given vintage. The bad thing is that your Côte de Beaune vineyards will have suffered three years in a row. So this year we concentrate on Gevrey-Chambertin, where Louis’s results are excellent in 2014.

A lovely purple, this has a really classic nose of a just-ripe vintage: cherry kernel, plenty of fruit, good length and follow through. This will make a classic bottle in five years. Drink 2020-2026.

Mid-purple with laid-back, elegant fruit, there is notable delicacy here: bright cherry fruit with a light, velvet coating. It has a nice finish with precision and style; this is graceful. Drink 2022-2028.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, lES GRUENChERS, 1ER CRU

Palish pink purple in the glass, with a lovely perfume, this has a wealth of fruit through the middle. There’s more weight than Les Chatelots, and a pleasing roundness while remaining fresh. Drink 2022-2028.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY, lES BaUDES, 1ER CRU

Pure, bright purple, perfumed and stylish with excellent body behind, this has raspberry and dark cherry fruit, lovely energy and everything in place. There’s good ripeness here. Drink 2022-2030.

GEVREY-ChamBERTIN

Pure purple in colour, with very pretty fruit on the nose, this has deep raspberry notes and good fresh fruit, along with very piercing, crunchy red fruit and good acidity. This lovely Gevrey-Chambertin displays significant energy, with little mineral touches. Drink 2018-2022.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES EVOCEllES

Made using tiny berries, this is Louis’ most concentrated wine in 2014. A rich, magisterial purple, with plump, ripe, dark fruit, this is extremely pure. Despite the concentration, the wine remains very fresh and crunchy behind: ripe, vivacious and impressive. Drink 2019-2025.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES ChERBaUDES, 1ER CRU

A ripe, bright purple in the glass, this has some energy and some elegance, suggesting depth too. There’s nicely ripe red fruit, with very impressive fruit concentration, brisk yet integrated acidity and very good length. Tingling minerals enliven the finish. Drink 2020-2026.

ThIERRY BROUIN alEC SEYSSES

domaine des Lambrays dujac Fils & Père

The Clos des Lambrays was established in 1363 yet it was only in 1981 that this climat was finally promoted to Grand Cru status as it deserves. The estate was purchased in 1996 by the Freund family in turn sold it to LVMH in 2014. Winemaker Thierry Brouin has been in charge since 1979. The vineyards are run on more or less organic lines, with no chemical anti-rot sprays, and ploughing of the soil by horse. In the cellar, he likes to use the majority of the stems, favours punching down over pumping over, and prefers to restrain the amount of new oak – around 50 percent for the Grand Cru.

Thierry Brouin, whose successor at the Domaine des Lambrays is about to be unveiled, is very happy with 2014, his 36th vintage in charge here. He began picking on 22nd September, relatively late by his standards, and is happy to have produced a little more wine this year (with the exception of the Premier Cru).

Starting with the 2000 vintage, Jeremy Seysses set up a négociant business with his father Jacques in order to make attractive and well-priced wine from their own village (Morey-St Denis), supplemented by a wine each from Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. The involvement of Jeremy at the Domaine has encouraged a gentle evolution in style, though the core Dujac principles of elegance and intensity remain firmly in place. The wines retain their characteristic smokiness in youth which develops into an ethereal leafy quality with age. Dujac Fils & Père is an excellent source for good-value Burgundy.

Volumes available are somewhat restricted in 2014, athough the fruit was ripe and healthy and yields were better. The problem here is continuing to be able to source grapes at an acceptable price, but fortunately the Dujac team is savvy enough to know what works in the marketplace. This is another producer who is reducing the percentage of new oak. Also a good thing in the marketplace.

Red

mOREY-ST DENIS

Most of the grapes here come from the hillside above Clos des Lambrays. This is a fresh, full purple, showing a spicy nose (even though no stems were used). There’s rich, purple fruit with weight and energy, and an impressive depth of fruit and a good acid balance too. Drink 2018-2022.


mOREY-ST DENIS, lES lOUPS, 1ER CRU

This comes from La Riotte, Le Village (an odd name for a Premier Cru) with a touch of Clos Sorbe (for the first time). Some stems used in vinification and this displays an agreeably were, rose petal bouquet, shading to white pepper and crushed strawberry on the palate. This is very much Thierry Brouin’s style. Drink 2019-2024.


ClOS DES lamBRaYS, GRaND CRU

All the stems were used in vinification but, such is the intensity of the fruit, they don’t show. This is a rich, plump purple with a surfeit of ripe, velvety red fruit. It is very clean, very pure and very direct: lots of stuffing and lots of stems give this a very tight profile for the moment. This will take a bit longer than some vintages – but promises to be first rate. Drink 2022-2030.

mOREY-ST DENIS

This is brilliant, fresh purple in colour and supported by a very stylish nose. Alongside some oak there is real heart to the wine, which finishes on whole-bunch fragrance. These Dujac Fils & Père wines are healthily concentrated this year. Drink 2018-2022.


ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY

Bright purple, and though the nose shows a very faint reduction, the vibrant purple fruit with dark raspberry notes displays lovely energy and a fragrant finish: this is very complete. Drink 2018-2022.

JéRômE CaSTaGNIER

domaine Castagnier

Jérôme Castagnier is fifth generation, though passage through the female line and sons-in-law has changed the family name: the originator Jules Séguin was succeeded by Albert Rameau then Gilbert Vadey, a military man, who developed the business, working closely with Alexis Lichine. Guy Castagnier, born in Algeria, married Mademoiselle Vadey and began working at the domaine in 1975. Since 2004 the wines have been bottled as Domaine Castagnier. Jérôme, the sole son, did not originally intend to join the family business, becoming instead a professional trumpeter in the Republican Guard. In 2004 he left Paris and the army and came back to Morey-St Denis.

Our jovial friend Jérôme Castagnier has excelled himself this year. The promise we picked up on last year has really been delivered in 2014. He says that the wines have lovely flesh but also a beautiful freshness, and notes some similarities to 2010. His generic Burgundies (available on www.bbr.com/burgundy2014) are also excellent.

ChamBOllE-mUSIGNY

From the village part of Aux Echanges, this glows purple in colour. Rich, up-front fruit is combined with a tasty touch of oak, full and sumptuous behind. A plump rather than wasp-waisted Chambolle. Drink 2018-2022.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN

Brilliant bright purple, this is full of energy, with strikingly pure red fruit. An excellent, juicy wine with a lovely mineral thread, this 2014 is really delicious, long and lovely. Bravo. Drink 2019-2023.


mOREY-ST DENIS, aUx ChESEaUx, 1ER CRU

With a brilliant, deep purple colour, the bouquet shows a touch of chocolatey reduction along with vigorous red fruit, while the texture on the palate is superb: a lovely grain to the tannins, moderate acidity but still fresh. Drink 2019-2025.



From 60-year-old vines, this has an exceptional, dense, purple-black colour. There is a riot of ripe, red fruit driving the bouquet. While the oak is lightly present, there is such a generosity of fruit that it swamps all over the barrels, and the wine finishes on its fruit with some minerals too. Drink 2020-2028.

ClOS ST DENIS, GRaND CRU

This starts promisingly with a glowing, purple colour throughout. It enjoys a very fine, heady nose, succulent and satiny, with a little touch of darker fruit, beautiful concentration and elegance. The whole is supported by a firm structure. This is swimmingly good, with a really long finish to boot. Drink 2020-2028.



Deepish purple in colour, this is really fabulously classy with great density and a lifted magical finish. Some blood orange notes lurk in the fruit. Altogether this is a red-blooded wine – really terrific. The finish is awesome: the whole range is really fine this year. Drink 2022-2030.



Jérôme chooses to serve this last, and he is not wrong. Striking, rich purple in colour, with some well-judged oak, this is very dense, with pure, lifted, concentrated, dark red fruit, good acidity. Overall it is very compact, ultra-concentrated, with a pretty, fresh finish. In short, impressive. Drink 2022-2030.

VIRGIlE lIGNIER

domaine Lignier-Michelot

Virgile Lignier worked alongside his father since 1988, really taking charge from 2000 by which time all the wines were being bottled at the domaine. Significant advances were made in the vineyards, reducing yields and ploughing the soil, along with the introduction of a sorting table and a higher percentage of new wood in the cellar. The domaine has an exemplary range of Morey-St Denis vineyards, supplemented by one or two cuvées from neighbouring villages.

When Virgile Lignier came back from his brief summer holidays, he toured the vines and saw a bit of rot on a biggish (by recent standards) crop, so he took a substantial team round to remove damaged bunches and anything unripe. He picked the healthy grapes from 17th September and gave the new vintage a long but light extraction. He has made some very succulent, juicy wines here in 2014.

Red

mOREY-ST DENIS, EN la RUE DE VERGY

Rich, glowing purple, the nose is filled with blackberry fruit, yet also a certain strictness. The palate reveals as much red as black fruit, with a good thread of mineral acidity and some tannin; indeed the structure is important with this wealth of fruit. Drink 2018-2022.


mOREY-ST DENIS, VIEIllES VIGNES

This is blended from four plots, two to the north, one in the centre, one south, all planted more than 50 years ago and producing small bunches of grapes. The result is a rich blueberry colour, with lovely weight to it, more structure built on tannins and a bit less on acidity, so keep for a little longer. Drink 2019-2024.


mOREY-ST DENIS, aUx ChaRmES, 1ER CRU

Bright purple with a deep centre, this has plump, chunky, sumptuous fruit, offering a delicious mouth-feel – especially through the middle of the palate, as is the way with vineyards called Les Charmes. There is a little structure behind, with a long finish on dark red fruit. Drink 2020-2024.


mOREY-ST DENIS, aUx ChEzEaUx, 1ER CRU

Bright, mid-purple colour, this has a more linear, mineral nose, compared to the flesh of Les Charmes. Indeed this is quite chiselled by Virgile’s standards. The fruit offers a raspberry and fresh blackberry mix. The chalky soil shows in this very mineral wine, which has a delightful finish. Drink 2021-2026.



mOREY-ST DENIS, lES FaCONNIèRES, 1ER CRU

This offers a dense, purple colour with an almost black centre. Virgile considers the soil to be similar to Clos de la Roche. It is more backward than the other Premiers Crus, dense and ungiving at this stage yet with a magical intensity of fruit, a crunchy finish, and excellent balance. Drink 2022-2028.



Richly purple, with an immensely concentrated nose, the whole bunches (50 percent) do not show except for a lifted energy behind. This is exactly what Clos de la Roche should be: in a glorious, full style. It will blossom into a truly charming wine. Drink 2024-2034.

This domaine was originally put on the map by Christian Sérafin’s father, Stanilaus Sérafin, a Polish émigré, who settled in Burgundy before the war. He initially worked as a mason, before purchasing some land in 1947 and establishing himself as a vigneron. His son Christian inherited the domaine in 1988, though he had been making the wine for the previous 20 years. Christian Sérafin is now past retirement age, but with a niece (Frédérique) in the vineyards and cuverie, and a daughter (Karine) in the office, continuity is in place. The style here is for powerful wines which age exceptionally well.

Though we still have the pleasure of tasting with Christian Sérafin, it is now his niece, Frédérique who is solely responsible for winemaking. Christian describes 2014 as being all about elegance and balance, with neither too much acidity nor tannin. The Sérafin wines always repay patience.

Barrel-chested Alain Burguet has been one of Gevrey’s most respected vignerons for a quarter of a century. He left school in 1964 to work in the vines and made his first vintage under his own name in 1972. Alain’s muscular physique could be seen in the wines he made in the 1980s, where the tannins were occasionally too firm for the fruit. His style evolved towards a gentler, fruitier style which has been continued by his sons Jean-Luc and Eric since then. Their own vineyards are all located within Gevrey-Chambertin but the range has been supplemented by one or two cuvées from purchased fruit.

This year Jean-Luc and Eric Burguet purchased some additional vineyards from another member of the family: an additional 0.75ha each in the two village Gevrey cuvées. We may also get a small allocation of Gevrey-Chambertin, Champeaux, 1er Cru and a new wine, Gevrey-Chambertin, Lavaux St Jacques, 1er Cru. They found that 2014 produced decent yields, with picking beginning on 18th September.

GEVREY-ChamBERTIN

This has a rich, fine, purple colour. The nose is awkward after a late malolactic fermentation; however the wine comes into its own on the palate: lovely, sweet, cherry fruit, really attractive, succulent, with very well-integrated oak and a very persistent finish. Drink 2019-2024.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, VIEIllES VIGNES

With an attractive touch of barrel toast, this is a rich, concentrated red-purple, laden with brisk, energetic, dark-cherry fruit. There is a good structure here, with attractive concentration and persistence. Flavours wash back across the palate. Delicious. Drink 2020-2026.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES CORBEaUx, 1ER CRU

Fine, elegant purple; as always, this isn’t as dark as some cuvées. Bright red cherry mingles with some raspberry notes; the wine is structured, with a tad of oak tannin, and good length. This is – as ever – a refined and sensitive Gevrey. Drink 2020-2028.


mOREY-ST DENIS, lES mIllaNDES, 1ER CRU

Bright purple with medium density, this has a ripe, red-cherry nose. The elegant fruit is backed by a surprisingly firm structure which will require time. Drink 2022-2028.

Glowing purple, this has a really engaging colour with a vibrant, heady nose to match – beautifully supported by the oak. A huge wealth of fruit in the mouth, quite firm structure, this is very backward but will make a great bottle. The pure fruit really lingers on the finish. Drink 2022-2029.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES CazETIERS, 1ER CRU

Glowing purple, this is really charming; the oak helps the nose but it marries very well with the succulent, vibrant fruit. Juicy, succulent, with lovely poise, red raspberry fruit, this is very persistent indeed, with an infusion of mineral acidity. Everything is there. Drink 2022-2030.

domaine Rossignol-trapet

The domaine was created through the marriage of Jacques Rossignol of Volnay with Mado Trapet from a noted family in Gevrey-Chambertin. Their sons Nicolas and David Rossignol have managed the domaine since 1990, moving subsequently to biodynamic farming. The first experiments started in 1997 with their Chapelle-Chambertin, followed by conversion of the whole domaine in 2004. Vinification includes a small proportion of whole bunches, while the trend in recent years has been to look for an increasingly elegant expression of Pinot Noir.

Nicolas and David Rossignol began the harvest on 22nd September, picking over eight days. Yields were up, the grapes were ripe, but some sorting was necessary after a little hail in Beaune and some Suzuki-engendered rot in the lower vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin. They are very pleased with their new Pellenc de-stemmer which leaves the berries intact, while continuing to use a percentage of whole bunches as well.

GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, SYmPhONIE

Fruit from new vines from Les Crais and Les Corvées were included in this cuvée. Fine, bright purple, this has succulent, ripe, red fruit. There is much more stuffing than some years, while retaining the Burguets’ fruit-forward style. This is very engaging, with modest tannins, and just enough acidity. Drink 2018-2022.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, mES FaVORITES, VIEIllES VIGNES

This cuvée is made from older vines in their favourite sites. The wine displays a dense purple colour, with rich raspberry fruit; new barrels providing a bit more stuffing, and a very long finish. This is really singing. Drink 2019-2026.


VOSNE-ROmaNéE, lES ROUGES DU DESSUS, 1ER CRU

Dense red in colour, with a nose which begins discreetly but really opens out well behind, very balanced, with a long fine finish. Very elegant and compelling, the Burguets have made a beautiful wine here this year. Drink 2020-2026.



Fine mid-purple, this again starts discreetly but then swells magically on the palate to a very long, graceful, expansive finish. Wherever we have tasted it, Clos de Bèze has been very true to itself this year. Drink 2022-2030.

BEaUNE, lES TEURONS, 1ER CRU

Not many stems were used here after the hail. It has a rich, bright colour, with good, ripe fruit, a little fine acidity but no rough tannins. Good energy here, well done. Drink 2019-2024.



Quite a pale purple, this has a fine, elegant bouquet and perfect poise, with more power on the palate than the gentle nose suggests. The wine has a fine, firm structure, with fruit emerging behind. Exhibiting precision and purity, this comes from different parts of Gevrey. Drink 2018-2023.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, ClOS PRIEUR, 1ER CRU

Bright, pure purple, this has a middling depth of colour. Fresh cherry-fruit resounds, with some depth. Fine-boned, the wine is very pure with a slightly firm finish which will surely round out. Good length. Drink 2019-2025.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, PETITE ChaPEllE, 1ER CRU

A mid-purple colour, this has plumper fruit on the nose, concentrated dark cherries. Again the wine has a fine and balanced structure, stylish and persistent. A little bit tight in its youth, but we really quite like this. Drink 2020-2026.



laTRICIèRES-ChamBERTIN, GRaND CRU

Excellent mid-purple, this offers a lovely mouthful of pure, plump cherry and dark raspberry fruit; very modish again, the hallmark this year. Poised and long, the wine has excellent oak integration. Drink 2022-2028.


ChaPEllE-ChamBERTIN, GRaND CRU

A rich purple colour, this has a fabulous, heady nose, very appealing. There are some glorious layers of velvet here, displaying more flesh at this stage than Latricières; really long and lovely. There is a nice touch of refreshing acidity behind. Drink 2022-2028.


ChamBERTIN, GRaND CRU

This grandest of Grands Crus displays a rich, deep purple with a nose to match. Not much detail is on display yet, just a sense of power. There is significant intensity to the palate but more length and strength than plumpness and weight. All quite laid back this year, and none the worse for that. Drink 2024-2030.

The domaine was founded by Charles Mortet, but rose to fame with the exceptional 1993 vintage crafted by his son Denis who tragically died at the age of 51 in January 2006. Denis believed with a deep passion that the work in the vineyard was everything. He has been succeeded by his equally, indeed exceptionally, talented son Arnaud, now also with the assistance of his sister Clémence. At the domaine everything starts in the vineyard, where every measure is taken to produce the finest, ripest fruit possible, creating a style of wine which, as Denis used to say is “a pleasure to drink young or old.”

Arnaud Mortet is cheerfully surprised by the quality of the wines this year, which are all about the fruit and the freshness, but getting more and more interesting during élévage. They really developed positively after the malolactic fermentation in August. With the meticulous, typically Mortet, care of their vineyards, the grapes ripen early, so Arnaud was able to start picking on 12th September. Great wines here.

Denis was born in 1963 in the town of Spy in Belgium – his father had fallen in love with a local girl on an outing with the Gevrey-Chambertin choir. Denis would visit his grandparents in Gevrey in the school holidays and came to understand the magic of the vigneron’s world. He became fully involved in winemaking from 1981, shortly after his grandfather’s death. The domaine remains small scale with less than 4ha, run by Denis, assisted by his wife Marie-Jo and son Nicolas.

The joy of this domaine is Denis Bachelet’s mastery of pure fruit from ancient vines in his various locations around the village. Denis has recently changed barrel supplier to enhance further the finesse of his wines and in 2014 has employed a slightly lighter extraction. Even so there is a magical concentration to his wines.

GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, mES CINQ TERROIRS

This cuvée was reintroduced in 2013 as there is now no need for a Vieilles Vignes bottling: even the “young” vines are now fully mature. Fine, bright purple in colour, this is stylish, very poised, with lovely, dark, raspberry fruit. Clean and fresh, this is full of energy having composure and balance too. Drink 2019-2026.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, 1ER CRU

From Petite Chapelle, Cherbaude and Belair, this has a rich, concentrated, purple colour. The nose is very backward, while the palate offers rich, dark fruit, even some chocolate, but fresh fruit too, some minerals, with very correct, fine-grained tannins and very good length. Drink 2020-2028.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES ChamPEaUx, 1ER CRU

The fruit used here comes from 70- to 100-year-old vines in four plots, all worked by hand or by horse. The yield is never excessive here. Intense, dark, fresh purple; there is equally intense fruit on the nose. The wine is very tight, very backward, but with a huge wealth of fruit waiting to come out with time. Drink 2022-2030.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, laVaUx ST-JaCQUES, 1ER CRU

This cool site is the last to be picked but it is worth waiting for. It is slightly lighter purple in colour than Les Champeaux, with a really intense, fresh, red-fruit nose. On the palate it remains tightly wound for now, but with impressive intensity and a fine, fresh finish. Drink 2022-2030.

CôTE DE NUITS VIllaGES

Bright fresh purple, with lots of energy, this is classic Bachelet. It offers a huge bundle of energy combined with a brilliant mineral finish. So classically juicy, this is really lovely. Drink 2018-2022.



The fruit for this wine is sourced from 60- to 90-year-old vines. It is very tightly wound, much more backward than the Côte de Nuits Villages, with excellent concentration of dark, black, velvety fruit. A coiled spring waiting to be released. Drink 2019-2026.


GEVREY-ChamBERTIN, lES CORBEaUx, 1ER CRU

Corbeaux always gives a lighter colour, with more finesse and less obvious intensity. It is all there though, thanks to the old vines dating back to 1920. There is a sweetness to the fruit, and an almost ethereal style. Drink 2020-2027.

The Fourniers have been making wine in Marsannay since at least the 17th century, though the domaine as currently constituted was established in the 1960s by Jean Fournier. His son Laurent now runs the estate, along with being in charge of the project to establish Premiers Crus in Marsannay. The domaine is now certified organic, through AB and Ecocert. They make more than 20 different cuvées, the majority from Marsannay.

“Those who did the work in the vineyards will find it paid off in 2014”, opines Laurent Fournier. There is no problem with concentration if the yields were reasonable. He went through the vineyards twice, at the end of August and again just before picking, to remove any bunches he was not happy with. Even then he discarded two small plots of Clos du Roy so as to ensure that what made it to barrel, and then bottle, was first-rate. As indeed it is.

There are certain vineyard sites up and down the Côte d’Or which have been recognised for centuries as being outstanding locations. One such is the Clos de la Perrière in Fixin, just north of Gevrey-Chambertin, founded by the monks of Cîteaux in the early 12th century. Dr Lavalle (1855) noted it as a Tête de Cuvée making wines which kept for longer than any others of the Côte d’Or. The Joliet family purchased the Manoir de la Perrière and its attendant vines in 1853. Bénigne, who has bought out other family members so as to be able to run the domaine as he wants, is the sixth generation of the family.

Bénigne Joliet began picking on 20th September, for four days, then went back to finish a late-ripening plot on 27th. He chose not to extract much because the colour and fruit were emerging easily in the vinification tanks of their own accord. The produce of the young vines and the vin de presse have been declassified. Clearly there is the necessary attention to detail here.

maRSaNNaY, CUVéE SaINT-URBaIN

Lovely, glowing, fresh, purple colour; this has a fabulous cherry and raspberry nose, clear pure fruit. With a little structure to keep it honest, this is otherwise very easy and appealing, with a nice touch of freshening acidity. Compelling at this price. Drink 2017-2020.


maRSaNNaY, ClOS DU ROY

We think of this wine as a Premier Cru, but the classification hasn’t happened yet. Rich, dense purple, the nose is dominated by dark, raspberry fruit. On the palate there is an explosion of dense, deep fruit, rounded and concentrated, with a lively finish. A faint trace of tannin behind indicates relative longevity. Drink 2018-2024.

FIxIN, ClOS DE la PERRIèRE, 1ER CRU

Punchy purple in colour, there is a little reductive touch to the nose. The red fruit offers beautiful, sweet fruit, harmony and persistence: this is really impressive. With real bounce and vigour, this is one for those who do not know Fixin to discover. Drink 2019-2026.

PRICES

Prices for the Burgundy 2014 En Primeur offer are quoted in bond and include freight and insurance (but exclude duty and VAT) and are quoted by the case.

ClOSING DaTE

The Burgundy 2014 En Primeur offer starts at 9am on Wednesday 6th January 2016 and closes at midnight Wednesday 17th February 2016, subject to stocks remaining unsold.

aVaIlaBIlITY aND QUaNTITIES

Prices are quoted in bond and include freight and insurance but exclude duty and VAT. Orders are accepted subject to stocks remaining unsold. Stocks of certain wines may need to be allocated subject to demand. A case comprises 12 x 75cl bottles, 6 x 75cl bottles, 6 x 150cl magnums, as stated. In exceptional instances wines may be offered as single 1 x 150cl magnums, where stated. Larger format bottles may be available. Please see bbr.com/burgundy2014 for details.

hOW TO PaY

We are happy to accept payment by cash, cheque, Maestro or by Mastercard or Visa. Cheques should be made payable to Berry Bros. & Rudd.

INSURaNCE aND OWNERShIP

We will remain responsible for insuring the wine at the original invoice value until your delivery and/or storage instructions have been completed. Ownership of the wines will pass on settlement of all outstanding charges.

ShIPPING

It is anticipated that the wines will be available for release during 2016.

DElIVERY aND STORaGE

Following shipment, your wines, by default, will be stored in bond in our Customers’ Private Reserves. Once the wines are in your Private Reserves we will notify you by email. On receipt of your delivery notification email or the subsequent invoice for rent, if you would like your wine delivered straight away we can arrange this as per our normal delivery terms. Any rent charged on wines withdrawn within 30 days of the date of invoice for rent will be credited. Customers who elect to take their wine out of bond, whether for delivery or for storage duty paid, will be required to pay duty and VAT at the prevailing rates at the time of delivery. These rates are currently £24.60 per case of 12 x 75cl bottles (9 litres) for duty and 20% for VAT on the original cost and duty.* Customers storing wine in bond or duty paid in Customers’ Private Reserves will be required to pay rent at the prevailing rate (this is currently £10.80 including VAT per case per annum*). Please note that wines bought in bond and en primeur, and wines stored in Customers’ Private Reserves are delivered free of charge when the original purchase value of the wines is more than £100 (inc. duty and VAT). *December 2015

ORDER CaNCEllaTION

Please note that in bond en primeur orders can be cancelled within seven working days of placing the order. A full refund of the purchase price of the wines will be given on receipt of formal notification in writing of cancellation of the order. Due to the unique nature of en primeur sales we regret that orders cannot be cancelled after this time.
