Summary Dr.JamesN.BurdineservesasaProfessorandHead(interim)oftheDepartmentofHealthPromotionandCommunityHealthSciences,andastheDirectorandCo-PrincipalInvestigatoroftheCenterforCommunityHealthDevelopmentattheSchoolofPublicHealth,TexasA&MUniversity.FromFebruary2013throughJanuary2015,Dr.BurdineservedastheDean(interim)oftheSchoolofPublicHealth(SPH)andpriortothatasAssociateDeanforPublicHealthPracticefrom2012-14,AssistantDeanforPublicHealthPracticefrom2009-12,andHead,DepartmentofSocialandBehavioralHealthfrom2002-05.Dr.Burdineisaninternationallyrecognizedexpertinpopulationhealthstatusassessmentandcommunityhealthdevelopment.HisareasofexpertiseincludeworkinginandwithruralcommunitiesacrosstheUnitedStatesandwithpromotorasincoloniacommunitiesalongtheUS-Mexicoborder.Hisexperiencealsoincludesthedevelopmentofhighlysophisticatedcost-effectivecommunityhealthassessmenttechniquesaswellasanumberofnational“model”programsforcommunity-basedhealthimprovement.TothispointinhiscareerDr.Burdinehasbeenawarded$28.1millioningrantsandcontractsfromtheRobertWoodJohnsonFoundation,theHealthServicesandResourcesAdministrationandtheCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention,amongotherfunders($14.4millionasPrincipalInvestigator,$10.9millionasCo-PrincipalInvestigator,$1.4millionasCo-Investigatorand$0.9millionasConsultant).SincearrivingatSPHin2001Dr.Burdine’sfundinghastotaled$17.7million($6.1millionasPI,$11.1millionasCo-PI,and$1.0millionasCo-Investigator).Dr.Burdine’sprofessionalpublicationsincludeco-editing5specialissuesofjournals,co-authoring5bookchapters,authoring/co-authoring54peer-reviewedpublications,and51technicalreportsandpapers.Hehasalsoauthored/co-authored172refereedconferencepresentations,37invitedpresentationsandtestimonies,and52continuingeducationprograms.Dr.BurdinehasalsoheldofficeswithnationalprofessionalorganizationsincludingPresidentoftheSocietyforPublicHealthEducation(1993),isamemberoftheDeltaOmegaPublicHealthHonorSociety,hasreceivedawardsforExcellenceinPracticefromtheSchoolofRuralPublicHealth(2006)andtheFacultyRecognitionAwardfromhisdepartment(2004,2005,2006).Healsohasservedasanadvisortonumerousnationalhealth-relatedorganizations,federalandstateagenciesandasareviewerformajorpublichealthprofessionaljournals.ThisyearDr.Burdinecelebratedhis25thyearteachingfortheAmericanCollegeofHealthcareExecutives.PriortojoiningthefacultyoftheSchoolofRuralPublicHealthin2001,Dr.Burdinespent10yearsasthePresidentandSeniorScientistatFelix,BurdineandAssociates,anationallyrecognizedhealthcareconsultingfirm.Priortothat,Dr.Burdinespend10yearsinhealthsystemmanagementatSetonMedicalCenterandScott&WhiteinTexas,andHealthEast/LehighValleyHealthNetworkinPennsylvania.Dr.BurdinelivesinCollegeStationwithhiswifeof49years,DawnDeForeBurdine;has4sons,13grandchildrenandraisesminiaturehorses.
