A Burbank Historical Minute: 1911-2011Who was Henry Mingay and why was a school named after him?

Before it became Burbank Adult School, the facility on Allan Avenue near Hollywood Way was called Henry Mingay Elementary School, named in honor of the lo-cal Civil War veteran.

Born on December 3, 1846 in Filby, England, Mingay and his family emigrated to New York four years later. When the Civil War broke out, Mingay enlisted and was sworn into the 69th Regiment. He mustered out after getting wounded, but was later commissioned as a first lieuten-ant, then a captain.

After the war, Mingay, his wife, and family moved around the country, finally settling in Glendale. As one of eight surviving Civil War vets left in the state, Captain Mingay visited local schools to share his experiences with the children.

The City of Burbank officially dedicated the elementary school on Allan Av-enue and Maple Street in honor of this beloved vet. The dedication ceremony took place on December 5, 1946, just two days after Captain Henry Mingay’s 100th birthday. He took part in the ceremony by turning the first shovel of earth as three live oaks trees were planted, the trees being symbolic of the aged soldier’s strength and stamina. Thousands of school children mourned Min-gay’s passing when he died a few months later on April 22,1947. (Photo and information courtesy of Mike McDaniel and Wes Clark’s Burbankia website)

It’s 1969 and Neil Armstrong is putting man’s first footprints on the moon. In rural Pennsylvania, ten-year-old Charlie Olmstead is so captivated by this historic event, he jumps on his bike and heads out into the dark night, hoping to get a better look at the moon. Charlie is never seen again.

Perry Hollow Police Chief Jim Campbell later finds the boy’s bicycle at Sunset Falls and everyone assumes Charlie fell in the water and drowned. Everyone except his mother, that is. She’s certain that he was abducted and she spends the rest of her life searching for clues to his whereabouts.

Years later, Eric Olmstead, now a famous author, returns to Perry Hollow to bury his mother and fulfill her last wish --- find out what happened to his brother Charlie. Eric looks for help from the current police chief, Kat Camp-bell, who just happens to be Jim Campbell’s daughter and Eric’s high school sweetheart. Together they learn that Mrs. Olmstead’s obsessive search for her son led her to uncover other disappearances in the area. Charlie wasn’t the only victim!

Bad Moon is the second in the Kat Campbell series and I must say I really enjoyed it. From the first page the reader is drawn into this web of small town deception and lies. The characters are well-defined, the dialog is snappy, and Ritter’s plotting is fast paced. Placing the story against the back-drop of the moon landings of the sixties and seventies is an absorbing ploy that gives a surprising spin to the story.

Check the library’s New Books shelves for Todd Ritter’s tantalizing thriller, Bad Moon.

Mayor Jess Talamantes accepted a check for $15,000 from the Friends of the Burbank Public Library to be used towards replacement of the books damaged by the broken water pipe last April. Friends president Mickey Pierce presented the check at the October 18 City Council meeting. (Photo by PIO)
