Deciding Your Path

One of the most important decisions a young person will make is the selection of a career. A career is not just a way to earn a living—

it’s a way of life. As you make your plans, remember there are many options available to you after you complete your high school

program. The following is a description of some of these options.

• University of California – Minimum academic GPA is 3.0 for grades 10/11, plus an ACT and/or SAT score. Realistically, students

who are admitted have a much higher GPA. The lower the GPA, the higher the ACT and/or SAT score must be. Juniors should sign

up for the SAT and/or ACT this spring. The UC application opens in August, and will be filed during the month of November. There

are two personal statements required and students should begin working on these during the summer. The application for all UC’s

can be found at: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/

• California State University System – Minimum academic GPA is 2.0 in academic subjects in grades 10/11, plus a qualifying score on

the ACT and/or SAT. Some of the very selective schools require very high GPA’s, and SAT/ACT scores including San Diego State,

Cal State Long Beach, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The application is on https://www2.calstate.edu/apply. The filing dates are

October 1st-November 30th.

• Private Colleges – The admitted student GPA and test scores (known as index or profile) for a private school varies depending on

the school. The application will look at other factors such as activities, skills, leadership, and community service in addition to

those “numbers”. Check the profile of last year’s entering class to see if you qualify. Applications for these schools typically

require multiple personal statements and recommendations from two teachers and your counselor. Many private colleges can be

applied to using http://www.commonapp.org/, where students can send multiple applications from one portal.

• Out-of-State Colleges – Many out of state schools have their own websites and applications. Check with the college of your choice.

Some out of state public schools may also be applied to using http://www.commonapp.org/, such as University of Virginia,

University of Colorado, Boulder, and University of Michigan. The requirements for admission to out-of-state colleges may differ

from the “a-g requirements” for California Universities, so be sure to research these carefully.

• Community Colleges – There are no entrance requirements for community college. Many have honors programs and advanced

classes for students who have higher GPA’s. If a student wishes to transfer to a CSU or UC after community college, they must

have a minimum of 60 credits (typically this takes 2-3 years), and a certain GPA depending on the campus or major. Students

wishing to transfer should communicate closely with their college advisor. Students may transfer to out of state or private

colleges with fewer than 60 credits. Community colleges also confer 2 year college degrees (Associate of Arts degree, A.A.) which

are sufficient for many fields. In addition, certifications for some occupations may be obtained at community colleges.

Page 6: Burbank High School 2020 Senior Parent Night...The BHS Counseling Team Sydney Harrison A- DO & DHH Britta Maslyk DAO-KELL/NCAA/CBI Yesenia Lopez KEM-PEN Welcome to Senior Parent Night

• Trade Schools – Trade/Technical schools link academic skills with career preparation. Students train for successful careers which

meet the needs of businesses and industry in technically skilled occupations. Trade/Technical schools lead to a two-year

associate degree, two-year certificate, apprenticeship training, or four-year college degree. The education is based on the

student’s interest and takes advantage of the way he/she learns best. The skills learned are grounded in the work world and

based upon things the student will need to know and do in real work. Community colleges offer many Trade/Technical programs.

• Apprenticeship Programs - Apprenticeship programs combine on-the-job training with relevant class- room instruction. While

earning a paycheck, apprentices work with skilled “journey level workers” to gain skill and knowledge to learn on-the-job. Most

programs require at least 144 hours of instruction per year. The classes cover the theory behind the techniques of an occupation

as well as safety instruction. For additional information about apprenticeship applications and other opportunities for on-the-job

training, contact your local Employment Development Department (EDD) office or the Division of Apprenticeship Standards at its

website: http://www.dir.ca.gov/DIR/Apprenticeship/DAS/ da.html.

• Work - Entering a job right after high school can help establish and confirm career goals, build employable skills, and allow

students to gain real life experiences through paid employment. Students should enter the world of work strategically and think

carefully about their future goals. Choosing a field that supports short term and long term career goals is the best way to make

time worked most beneficial.

• Military Opportunities - The Armed Forces offer many training programs which prepare young men and women for civilian jobs.

Some of the immediate benefits of military service are:

o Educational and career training (technical and professional)

o Opportunity to become a commissioned officer through ROTC, Office Candidate Programs, and the Academies

o Opportunity for promotion and pay raise

o National and International travel opportunities

• Military Academies - Candidates for admission to the military academies must be citizens of the United States, must have

reached their 17th, but not their 22nd birthday by July 1 of the calendar year in which they are appointed cadets, and must

meet rigid scholastic and medical qualifications. Those interested should begin the application process during the spring

semester of their junior year. Letters from representatives need to be obtained prior to the spring of the junior year. All of the

academies are among the most competitive in terms of admissions.
