J AST-TO-COAST HOOKUP- An RF-8G reconnaissance aircraft fro m the East Coast-based VFP-206, Washington, D.C., is refueled by a KA-3B Skywarrior tanker
from VAQ- 208, Alameda, Calif., during weekend training in Florida.
Reserve Squadrons Wing It On A Weekend Seven detachments of Naval Air Reservists from squadrons all over the country have completed CVWR-20's first weekend drill in coordinated air wing operations at the Naval Air Station, Cecil Field, Fla.
Attack Carrier Air Wing Reserve 20 is composed of 8 squadrons from bases throughout the TT~ited States: VF-201 and VF-
~ , Dallas, Tex.: VA- 203, Jacksonville, Fla. ; V A-205, Atlanta, Ga. ; VA W-207, Norfolk, Va. ; V AQ- 208, Alameda, Calif.; VFP-206, Washington, D.C.; and VA-
204, Memphis, Tenn. All of the squadrons participated except V A-204.
The drill began on Friday, when support personnel were flown from their home bases to Cecil Field in special airlifts by Naval Air Reserve transport squadrons.
Detachment personnel from the squadrons included about 40 officers and 100 enlisted Reservists. Their aircraft included 12 A-4L Skyhawk light attack jets, 8 F-8H Crusader fighters, 1 RF-8G Crusader reconnaissance plane, 2 Grumman E-IB Tracer early warn-
2
ing aircraft and 2 KA-3B SkywarTioT tanker planes.
On both Saturday and Sunday mornings of the drill weekend the wing launched 19-plane strike formations in assaults on the Pinecastle bombing range in Central Florida, simulating actual combat missions.
The weekend gave all the men involved a chance to practice their specialties as part of an integrated team. Practice with live ordnance against targets on the nearby bombing ranges added extra realism.
The obj ect of the exercise was to help maintain the proficiency which CVWR-20's squadrons had shown in August 1971, when they were
deployed aboard the attack carrier USS fohn F. Kennedy (CVA 67).
~fter that deployment the C ~
the wing, CDR Edmond M. Fet:" _, USN, had said, "We achieved a high level of readiness and coordination within the air wing and proved the soundness of the Reserve Force concept of organization. The real problem is maintaining proficiency in air wing operations between the annual two-week ACDUTRA periods each summer."
Now, after the weekend operation, he says, "We completed all training objectives in a highly efficient and professional manner. It was a most profitable exercise."
More are being planned.
A FORMATION of CVWR-20 aircraft returns from a strike on Pinecastle-bo range.

.teRCY MISSION-A crewman carries a live kidney from Naval Air Reserve plane t waiting Marine helicopter at the Naval Air Station, Glenview, Ill. The replace
. .•. mt k idney was /lown from Milwaukee, Wis. , to Glenview by a Naval Reserve crew from Replacement Training Unit 60 and Patrol Squadron 90. A Marine helicopter then carried it to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago for an operation on a
young victim of kidney disease.
Part-Time Help Pays Off Two Ways
About 200 part-time N avymen are now standing weekend watches on ships in port to give full-time Navymen more opportunity to be with their families.
The 200 Reservists volunteered .f"r a pilot program which.is being
}d out on six West Coast Ships-three Fleet and three Reserve-under the auspices of CINCP ACFLT, Commander Naval Surface
Reserve, COM 11 and COM 13.
Under the program the Reservists spend their drill weekends standing watches aboard ship so more of the full-time Navymen in the ships' crews can enjoy weekend liberty. Besides the obvious benefits to the full-timers, the program gives the part-timers a chance for some practical experience while performing a meaningful service to the Navy.
Begun in January, the program has been so successful that it is being considered for expansion.

Getting Your Copy Of The Reservist Are you getting your copy of The Naval Reservist each month?
I,ndividual mailings are made to members of the Phased Forces, Training and Support Component, Miscellaneous Programs, and Ac-. .~ Status Pool; and to Retired
jervists upon request. Copies are mailed in bulk to
training activities for further distribution to drilling members in
Combat Units, the Fleet Augmentation Component, the Fleet Support Activities Component, and the Shore Establishment Component.
If your copy of the Reservist normally comes by mail, and you fail to receive it, you should address an inquiry to the CO, Naval Reserve Manpower Center, Bainbridge, Md. 21905.
If you are a drilling member of
16
a unit or component which receives copies through bulk distribution, check your training activity for a copy of the Reservist. If sufficient copies are not received, a request
for a change in the number shipped should be sent to PAMICONUS, Bainbridge, Md. 21905.
Do not write to BuPers. This ~ . ~~i
only delay matters.
No-This Is Not A Seagoing Hot-Air Balloon
The Navy has come up with a new way to preserve the topside areas of ships in the mothball fleet. It's a custom-engineered, air-supported, plastic structure which completely covers the ship's deck, topside equipment and superstructure. (See photo.)
Inside the cover, dehumidified air is circulated to support the plastic and prevent moisture damage.
The new method is being tested
17
on USS Betelgeuse (AK 260), an attack cargo ship berthed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.
The process requires a minimum dismantling of the ship's topside gear for stowage below deck. Winches, controllers, directors and other topside equipment c kept in place.
This can mean a significant saving of time if the ship needs to be reactivated to operating status.
( 'RING UP- Workmen at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard put plastic in place over cargo ship USS Betelgeuse (AK 260).
New Nautical Mile The East Coast now has a nautical mile race of its own.
