Bungendore prepares to host NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee 2019
Bungendore Public School, for the very first time, will host the Illawarra
and South East Regional Finals of the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee.
Eighty students from 20 schools in the area will compete on Wednesday
11th September for a place at the State Finals which will be held in at the
ABC studios in Sydney in November.
Only the winner of the junior division and the winner of the senior division
may proceed to the State Finals.
Representing Bungendore Public School for Years 3&4 will be Mikayla
Fenton from 4/5F and Jay Moore from 3G and the school will be repre-
sented in Years 5&6 by Emma Metham from 4/5F and Kyran Karaitiana
from 5LP.
Last year, Bungendore’s Matthew Forman was runner up in the junior
section of the regional finals, held in Nowra.
A student from Bungendore Public School, Christina Hood, was the
Premier’s Spelling Bee State Champion for Years 5&6 in 2016. Christina
Hood was a regional finalist in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, showing great
dermination to achieve her goal.
Jay's big brother Eric Moore was a regional finals winner and a State
finalist for Years 3&4 in 2015.
Finalists in this year’s School Spelling Bee were presented with certificates
at last week’s primary assembly.

Bungendore Public School finishes in top ten in the ultimate Trans-Tasman Maths Challenge
Maths whiz, Henry in K/1T, has taken out third place in the
Australian/New Zealand leader board for Kindergarten this year!
His class finished in 6th
position (4th
in Australia) and primary class
4/5F has also achieved an exciting result, placing 4th for all of Year 4
(2nd
in Australia) and 6th
for all of Year 5 (3rd
in Australia).
The popular maths competition, The Matific Games, run by leading
online maths resource Matific, was bigger than ever with even more
schools competing across Australia and New Zealand this year.
It ran from August 13th - 15th
and thousands of pupils in years K-6
battled it out to showcase their maths skills using Matific's suite of online maths
resources, earning points for themselves as individuals, their classes and their schools.
Teacher Kerry Forman said she had supervised students before school, lunchtimes and at recess
who were caught up in the excitement of the competition and keen to improve not only their
individual position on the leader board but also their class position.
“I know there were students who were also busy at home, trying to complete as many Matific
episodes as possible and in class, we covered a lot of maths across all maths strands during the
competition.
“Results were continually updated in real time live on the Matific Games leader board, so
schools could keep track of the action as it unfolded.
“Although we were encouraging a bit of healthy inter-school competition, it was not just about
victory or defeat as much as encouraging maths-loving students to get involved and, even if
not winning, enjoying the achievement of giving it a go!”
Matific's education expert, Brent Hughes, said maths was still a source of anxiety for many
children and Australia's mathematics education experts have all been advocating for big
changes to the way that we teach and engage children with maths in Australia.
“Our concept behind developing the Matific Games was to help get more kids excited in the
maths subject by making it enjoyable and inviting, aiding to reduce kids' maths anxiety but
also to improve their math scores,” he said.
"We have seen throughout the last few years how these games have helped significantly im-
prove students' ability to master necessary topics, from addition and long division to fractions
and primary level statistics.
"The importance of engaging students in mathematical experiences that go beyond simple
calculations is crucial. It's more about meaningful mathematical experiences that make stu-
dents question, wonder and engage.”
The DVD showcasing the Queanbeyan District Arts Festival that we
performed at during Week 3 at the Canberra Theatre is now available
for ordering. The DVD cost is $20 each and must be ordered through
the school. Order forms are available at the front office with a cash
payment or online payment receipt number. All orders must be re-
turned to school by THURSDAY 29th August (Week 6)
Safety tips for drivers using Drop-off and Pick-up zones • Always drop off or pick up your child from the designated zone and follow the school’s procedures.
• Drivers should remain in their vehicles at all times in the Drop-off and Pick-up zone.
• Make sure children use the Safety Door (the rear footpath side door) to get in and out of the car.
• Make sure the handbrake is applied when the vehicle is stationery.
• Always park legally.
• Avoid dangerous manoeuvers such as U-turns and three-point turns.
Mums and Dads we need your help
In the mornings: Your children need to sit down quietly with their friends, not play
games or stand with you. When it is time to go to class they need to line up with their class
and walk with their teacher.
At assemblies: If you have little ones with you can you please encourage them to sit
quietly in the chair next to you. Once the assembly has started, if you need to talk to
someone can you please leave the hall to have your conversation. Thank you for helping
