    BUNCHES IN BRAZIL

    Spring 1978

  • BUNCH NEWSLETTER ' v ^March, 1978

    Faithful Friends:

The Lord has been so good to us. It's hard to believe that we areback home in Brazil. Just a few days before we left the States Ithought I would be needing surgery and that we would be forced tospend another six months there. Only a miracle could have improvedthe situation in such a short time to the point that the Doctor gavethe go-ahead to return. The many prayers were answered and Hecontinues to bless us abundantly. How true is His Word, which to... "Be anxious in nothing; (help thou my unbelief!) but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requestsbe made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth allunderstanding shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in ChristJesus." (Phil. 4:6-7) All Praise to Him!

We want to express our special thanks to all who participated inthe "sending service" at Sea-Tac on New Year's Day. We were reallyblessed by that expression of love. We also appreciate what theIssaquah Family has done to get word out on our needs. The Lordhas blessed us with a lovely home in what we trust will be a veryfruitful part of the city. We pray that it will work out to finance thehouse in the States through God's people there. Thank you again foryour prayers and help.

We have been here over two months now and are still gettingsettled. Life can be rather complicated at times and we have facedsome difficult tasks already. With God's guidance we know that allwill work together for good.

One of the highlights of our return was the time we spent withthe Christians in Uberlandia. It was so good to see the tremendousgrowth that has taken place and to participate in that growth as wewent down to the creek at our property and witnessed six newbirths. We all celebrated the Lord's Supper under the trees plantedby the water.

It may be hard to believe, but in the two months in Brazil Ihave spent the equivalent of more than five 40-hour work weekstraveling by bus and car! I pray that it has been spiritually rewardingfor those who have crossed my path. One young man who has donesome work at our house has shown interest in the Scriptures. I havehim doing a study in Mark and pray that his openness will blossominto a decision to follow Christ.

Pray with us that many will respond to the simple New Testament message as Sandy and I and Bruce and June Colson labortogether in Cuiaba, the Capital of Mato Grosso. , -

  • Child ChatterHello everybody. How are you doing? Are you fine? I moved

into a pretty house. It's blue. We have a lot of rooms. I'm starting toread Portuguese. There's this book that I like reading in it. We havetwo hammocks. It looks like the States here . . . and a little bit likeit. I live in Cuiaba. And my school is right down the road. It's reallyclose. I got a pretty teacher. I got some friends. One friend alwaysruns if I run and she walks if I walk. We always have to wait for eachother. When we walk I start running but she doesn't see me so shedoesn't run. But sometimes she sees me running. We have a tank that

we can swim in. And we have a little place toput the hammocks and where the hammocks arewe can put water on the floor so we can slide. We like to swim because of the hot weather.Today I was walking home with a coat and itwas hot, do you know why? ... everybody waslooking at me. They thought I was silly becauseI had a coat on when it was so hot. My brotherwants to talk. Before my brother talks I want tosay this: I had a loose tooth that I pulled out. Here comes Corey . .. I fly on a airplane toBrazil. I ride on a trike. I got a whole gob of

toys. I got a net in my room so no bugs get me. I got a bathroom. And I got a whole gob of chairstwo chairs. I work today. Mydaddie skipped. My daddie get our surprise. Us played three littlepigs. what the Lord has in store for ushere. I'm grateful that my Lordcares for me through all kinds ofsituations: While Jim was inUberlandia getting our things,Xwas rear-^ded^X^nlJ^-^"^i^L, no one was hurt. Summer 1978

    Dear Friends:

"For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which isJesus Christ." I Corinthians 3:11

Sometimes I feel more like a building inspector than a missionary. Thepeople to whom the Lord has called us... are people of faith. I have never yetmet an atheist in Brazil, though they must exist. I also have yet to discover aperson who doesn't have a spiritual life. All are constructing some kind ofspiritual house. Most of the materials they are using are drawn from the Word ofGod. Such strong bricks as "love your neighbor as yourself" and "do not steal, kill or commit adultry." However, the problem with most of this construction isthat it won't last. The building may even at times be beautiful, since some ofGod's best materials went into it. But, it is inevitable that most of thesebuildings will collapse. Why? Because care was not taken in selecting the rightfoundation.

With many people here I have used the illustration of the race. Thecontestants are registeredand sAon they are running toward the finish. Ifsomeone comes out of the stands or over the fence and begins to run alongsideof the others, and even completes the race, what will be his reward? Nothing!... except perhaps being arrested. Those who will be recognized at the end arethose who had their name written down at the start. Jesus is "the Way and theTruth and the Life." It is only by being "born again" in the power of His Spiritthat we have a right to "run the race" with others who also have their citizenshipin heaven.

We thank you for the prayers thathave helped us to get established and forme to get through the bout withpneumonia. A special thanks to theColsons who helped us get the word outoh their ham radio.

, Just three days out of the hospital.I'had the privilege of baptizing Maria. She is a radiant new Christian andhelped greatly during the campaign.

Bruce and June help us keep in touch with We invited Gary Burreil, fellowfamUy by shortwave radio. missionary from Goiania and Ulissis, a

fine Brazilian preacher from Pires doRio, Goias, to help us "reach out" to the people here. The first four days we ''preached and showed films m my area then we went to the side near the Colsons.Several hundred attended the meetings and we each had about 90 people showenough interest to leave their names and addresses.

Since the rallys, we have been busy following up with other meetings, home visitation and Bible studies. We both began with meetings in CommunityCenters but I have met with real opposition and have not been allowed to usethe center for several weeks. The Lord has provided the use of a home forregular evangelistic meetings on Saturday nights and we trust that we will soonsee the first fruits of our labor.

I am calling and leading Bible Studies six nights a week and we have moved"family night" to Thursday afternoon. It opens more possibilities for us as afamily and gives me another night to call. Monday night has been reserved for

.Sandy and we spend quality time together that our witness would be re-enforcedby the example of our Christian family.

Praise God, and thank you for being used of Him to maintain us on" thefield. ,.

    Jim

  • A Note from SandyWe do appreciate you and the many prayers that you have said on our be

half. We gain strength from them and feel encouraged because you care. TheLord is watching out for us: When Jim developeda high fever, the Lord provided just the right peopleto help me get him to Emergency and into thehospital which isn't any easy task. The right doctorwas found that had studied in the U.S.A. and immediately he had things in control and happenedto be on duty when we arrived at Emergency. Godalso provided Maria, my helper, to watch the children while i stayed with Jim in the hospital andthe children were well taken care of. We were sothrilled with Maria's decision to be baptized andshe just radiates. Maria has gone back to Araguaribecause her mother didn't want her so far fromhome. We miss her but we know that the Lord isusing her to witness to her family and friends. The

Lord provided Ana to take Maria's place and we pray that we can help her findJesus in the same beautiful way that Maria found Him. Mistie and Corey grew tolove Maria dearly since she worked for us forover two years and they, too, miss her. Mistiehas done well her first term back in her Brazilian school and she has Winter Vacation themonth of July. The second term will start inAugust and goes to December. We're happythat we have placed her in a Brazilian schooland at the first PTA meeting Jim was electedVice-President. Mistie has made many friendsand many of them are coming to our SundaySchool that we started in our home. EverySunday morning before the class begins Mistieand Corey go out in the "highways and byways" and call the children in. We've had agood bunch of children that are very attentiveand we pray that the little seeds that are beingplanted in these young lives will germinate andbring forth fruit. All of the children are frompoor homes and have it pretty rough. Pray thatGod will light the "spark" that will never goout in these "little people" that are BIG inGod's eyes. About 25 neighbor children attend

Sandy's weekly Sunday School inour home.

Sandy is really a good stewardof hertypewriter (...talk aboutworking your fingers to thebone!

Child ChatterHello, everybody. I'm going to talk about stuff here. Maria, she already

went to Araguari. We had "family night" one night. We went riding our bikes

  • together. I had tests last week. I gotnumber 8 on my test. We did on theother next "family night" go to amovie. It was about "Ben Hur." Oh,and there was a man there in themovie, he said he had seven wives.Do you know what else he said? Hesaid to Ben Hur not to treat hishorses like animals because thehorses are his children. Oh, we have alittle black doggie. Her name is Cinderella and she's a girl. She likesplaying with balls and people. She'sfun to play with. Oh, we started Sunday School at our house. One day in

Sunday School there was 25 kids. And one daycame 24. All of them were my friends. At the endwe color and then pray and sing. Corey went on atrip and I stayed here with daddie. We went ondates . . . five dates. Now Corey's going to talk ...Good-bye.

Hi! I got friends. I play, play all day. I got alittle doggie. I go to Uberlandia on the bus. I got aplug here and when I get hot I turn the fan on.Ana is fixing the food for me. My number on myshirt is 10 like Pele. I play soccer with my friend. He lives by my house. I swim ail day in my swimming pool. Bye-bye, I going to eat, okay?

Mistie and Corey always lookforward to "family time" andthe special projects. Painting aBible story is always a favorite.

Mistie, through the Christian symbol in ourgate. She's off to her school you can see inthe distance.

Dear Friend,'"Thou therefore, my child be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the samecommit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also." II Tim. 2:1-2

Leadership Training is a key to church growth. However, in order to have anykind of a training program you first need some dedicated, spirit-filled Christians. Atlast writing we had one, and she moved back to her home town where she continuesto be on fire for the Lord. However, that ieft us with zero. We came here to raise upthe body of Christ and to entrust His Word, ".. . to faithful men, who shall be ableto teach others . .We concluded that prayer was the necessary catalyst which weneeded, in abundance, to bathe the work we were doing. We have invited differentsupporting churches each month to meet the challenge by praying fervently for theoutreach in Cuiaba. In the just over three months since this began we have seen 34buried with Christ and raised to newness of life. Praise the Lord for the POWER OFPRAYER.

Now we are seeking to raise up a few faithful men, to equip them, and showthem their marching orders. God, through prayer, is giving us those men and as you

can see from the photos, they are already leading out, preaching, testifyingand baptizing.

Felizberto, one of the first to acceptChrist, is ^ alcoholic. He has not had adrink since "June. Re won't even drinkcoke. His testimony has had a real impact and he baptized his brother-in-lawin August. One of the keys to Feiiz-berto's rapid spiritual growth has been

1 the strong commitment of his wife whoL, accepted Christ with her husband.WL Raimundo came to Christ in July,

day after he was married. He hassince baptized his wife and severalothers.

Our men are calling with me and each Sunday morning we have a Prayer andLeadership Training meeting for them. In the afternoon we gather at the river forbaptisms and then meet together in homes for the Lord's Supper and sharing service. We have Wednesday and Saturday night meetings which are evangelistic as well asedifying. Sandy has started regular women's meetings and at her first gathering ayoung couple (she, the daughter of one of our Christian women) found Jesus andwere baptized as a wonderful conclusion to that first encounter.

In the recent Evangelistic Rally, Raimundo took the lead as Evangelist andFelizberto and others shared in prayer and personal testimonies. Your prayersagainwere central. Satan does not like what's happening and we have seen how he worksto destroy our witness. Thursday the rally got started with a fair group of a couplehundred. Friday we were rained out. Saturday about everything possible wentwrong, with the sound system completely failing several times. Sunday night whenwe arrived to set up there was no electricity. We confronted Satan with prayer andcontinued to set up by car lights . . . with two or three minutes to go the powerreturned and we had a fantastic meeting. Fourteen adults gave their names and fivehave been baptized as a result, with more to come. After the meeting we thankedGod for the victory and moments later the lights went out again. They had neverflickered during the film of Christ's death and victory over the grave and the powerful preaching and testimonies. Your prayers have influence even here on the bottomhalf of the world. The Lord IS raising up leaders for His church in the interior ofBrazil. ,7

  • A Note from SandyThe Lord is blessing the whole bunch of us because you^care and we feel the results of your faithful praying forour family and work. It's exciting to see the hand ofGod moving even in the little things . . . Corey andMistie are without colds, worms and lice for the timebeing! The "Birthday Season" Is upon us and Coreywill turn five, Oct. 25 and Mistie, eight, Nov. 10. It's

amazing how time flies because Corey was only three and a half months and Mistiethree years old when we arrived in this beautiful country. I feel that our adventureshere have brought our children closer to Jesus because they have seen Him work ina mighty way. Subtracting our furlough time, we've been in Brazil foc.four yeais. _('and we've grown to love these people who are so warm hearted. The Lord is blessingour church work and He's guiding myhand in working with the children and

^women. I've stopped my SundaySchool in my home for the time beingso that I can help the new Christianwomen start two new S.S. in the areawhere we are working which is acouple of miles from our home. Thefirst S.S. is going great and the children sing and participate in the stories with such gusto. The womenhave shown such enthusiasm in teaching the children that I am now ableto leave them and help train othersto start the second S.S. Do pray forthese women that they will have thelove, patience and wisdom in teach

these children and that the children willcontinue to be as eager for God's Word asthey've been since the beginning. Our women'smeetings have been well attended with thewomen using what they learn to share theirfaith with others. Already we have two ladiesthat would like to follow Jesus and be baptizedbut they're holding back a little, waiting fortheir husbands to make the same decision withthem. We've seen that it is much better for bothhusband and wife to be immersed at the sametime for a stronger impact in the family and fortheir witness to others. We've already seen thatwhere we have a couple united in Christ... weseem to have faster spiritual growth in the family and a better witness to their relatives andneighbors which opens up new avenues forEvangelism. In closing I would like to ask foryour help: the families that we are working

Feiizberto's wife, Maria, is now on her w'th have between slx to eight children in eachown as she leads the Sunday School family with very little money SO boxes of used

  • BUNCH NEWSLETTER

    Winter, 1978-79Dear Friend:

"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."Luke 2:14

Greetings! God has blessed us with His Son. We must take Him to the dyingworld. The Lord has continued to help that task here in Brazil.

A recent retreat was a blessingfor the 82 who participated. We wentby truck and car, eight kilometers toa "current powered" ferry, on whichwe crossed the Cuiaba River. We useda school in a village for our meetingplace and were uplifted by a wonderful day of worship, fellowship andfun. Nine people celebrated theirfirst "Lord's Supper" after namingJesus as Lord and being buried withHim and raised to newness of life. Itwas a great conclusion to a beautifulday.

Spring. We covet your continued prayers on behalf of these many new babes. Theyknow you are praying for them and they send the warmest kind of Season's Greetings to their brothers and sisters in the U.S.A.

Manuel, cover-left center, who came to Christ in August, recently baptizedhis mother. Ana. It's exciting to see the Spirit work through family ties. The newwomen's meeting began in Ana's home.

Our Wednesday night evangelistic meetings have developed into a Bible Studyand calling night. This is getting group participation in reaching out to friends, neighbors and contacts made through the Saturday night films.

We are beginning a dicipling program among our men that is designed toequip the entire congregation. Each dicipled

individual will then be responsible to dicipletwo or three more members. When all havebeen involved the program will become anevangelistic outreach as well as a continuingmethod of nurturing through teaching andpractical application.

God has given me a wonderful wife andtwo precious children. Sandy and I seek toput our family second, only to God, and thework comes in a close third. "Dates with Dad"are a favorite and memorable event. Mistieand Corey's recent birthdays gave each a turnon the town!

As the old year draws to a close and1979 begins, we must extend to you, whomake this mission possible, a hearty "thanks"

^ and trust that together we can make the New " kIPYear a great time of harvesting for the Master.

  • A Note from Sandy.

Almost a year has gone bysince we returned to Brazil and theLord has been so good to us: He'sblessed with reasonably good health,a lovely home and supporters whocare! Thank you all for your faithfulsupport of our work here in Cuiaba. The children readjusted beautifullyto Brazil and they are definitely anasset to our work in melting thehearts of the people. Mistie passedthe First Grade and will start back toschool in February. She is now enjoying summer vacation. Corey continues to be "All Boy" and he also will start toschool in February. The Sunday Schools continue to blossom and bloom, and bothteachers and students are learning and growingone little boy was helping quiet hisnew baby brother by singing the Sunday School songs to him but the baby wasn'tsure if it was soothing or not! We now have two women's meetings going in two different housing projects which are edlfyingand evangelistic. The first group,of course,is being led by Brazilian women and they are doing a good job. I hope to raise up

leaders in the second group to take over so Ican ease myself out of the picture as leader. In the future I will then alternate between thetwo groups and be used where I'm needed andthen be free to start new groups. Mistie andCorey had great birthdays and were elated toreceive over 20 birthday cards apiece and nowthey're excited about decorating the houseand tree for Christmas. It's hard to believethat the Christmas Season is actually upon us,especially, since the weather's been 100 de-

Happiness is being elose to so ^rees or better. Do have a lovely Christmasmany. a Christ-filled New Year.

The women's meetings are refreshing timesof letting the "Son" shine in.

We had Thanksgiving there and we had a lot of food to eat but there was alot of flies there, too. Now I'm going to talk about Christmas: We've got three

We're going to make cookies and stuff togive to the people that daddie preaches to, theChristians. We have Christmas because it isJesus' birthday and it's good to be nice to otherpeople.
