UNDERSTANDING THE ANNUAL REPORT

The 2019 Annual Report provides parents, caregivers and members of the school community with an overview of Bunbury Senior High School’s performance over the past year. It provides information about student academic performance, attendance, school programs and staff development.

This report is a small component of the total reviewing and reporting processes that the school undertakes. As an Independent Public School, Bunbury SHS develops a Business Plan together with Improvement Plans. The Business Plan and the Delivery and Performance Agreement have been endorsed by the School Board and provide the basis for other ongoing accountability and reporting.

The 2019 Annual Report reflects the school’s Priorities and Targets, as outlined in the 2017 – 2019 Business Plan: A Framework for the Pursuit of Excellence in Education – Phase 2.

THE SCHOOL CONTEXT Bunbury Senior High School is rich in heritage and culture and draws students from a wide area, ranging from the more central parts of Bunbury, and spreading to Burekup, Boyanup, Dardanup and Donnybrook for senior school. The campus is only metres from the Indian Ocean and enjoys amazing vistas from the buildings and grounds.

Aspects of the school are heritage listed yet they remain suited to the purpose of delivering a contemporary education. There have been a number of significant upgrades over the years including the provision of a purpose-built library and additional classrooms for the relocation of Year 7 to secondary schools.

Highly effective partnerships have been established with a range of external agencies including the City of Bunbury, South Regional TAFE, the Bunbury Regional Trade Training Centre, the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce, Maker + Co, ECU, iVET and other community groups.

The School Board is comprised of school staff, community members, parents and senior-school students. It plays an important role in the ongoing oversight of the school and actively engages with the staff in the review of educational programs aimed at improving academic, social, emotional and physical development of all students.

THE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Bunbury Senior High School (SHS) achieved outstanding results in 2019. This was most evident when the School Curriculum and Standards Authority released the Schools Comparative data in January 2020.

These results are more than an indicator of the academic achievement of the 2019 Year 12, Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) cohort. Academic results are one of the many factors that contribute to a school being viewed as a good school and the focus on aspects such as staff and student wellbeing, and teacher quality play an important role in academic achievement.

The school continued its success in a range of academic, sporting and cultural competitions. This included achievements in Mathematics, History and Geography competitions, Champion School at Country Week; success for a number of the school debating teams; individual success for students in the Premier’s ANZAC Tour, National Art competitions and success for the School Band in their respective competitions.

The School Board has continued to interrogate the school data and support the school to implement strategies for improvement. I would like to congratulate and thank the Board for their work, particularly Tim O’Byrne as the Chair and Emma Tinley for her role in representing students in the school.

This 2019 Annual Report captures all the aspects of school achievement mentioned above as well as evidence of the school adding value in areas such as social and emotional support, values education, work readiness and wellbeing.

I commend this 2019 Annual Report to you as a record of school achievement.

SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2019 saw the final stage of the school’s third IPS Business Plan. A Framework for The Pursuit of Excellence in Education: Phase 2 was the iteration of a strategy to ensure that Bunbury Senior High School continued its history of outstanding educational delivery and remained the secondary school of choice in the South West.

A range of qualitative and quantitative data, including feedback from the school’s second IPS Review, system initiatives, student achievement data, perceived local needs, and the current Delivery and Performance Agreement, guided formation of the Plan.

The school’s priority areas,

Success for All Students

High Quality Teaching

Strong Leadership and Governance;

were directly linked to the Department’s Strategic Plan: High Performance – High Care. The school’s specific areas of focus within these priorities were articulated more specifically in Focus Statements and Targets within the Business Plan.

The six Targets represented the key outcomes the school sought from this Plan and they were central to informing teaching, learning and assessment, together with the deployment of resources. The Targets are specific, measurable, achievable and realistic within the period 2017 – 2019. In addition, for some Targets, the school also established an aspirational goal. Essentially, this was an ambitious objective that clearly demonstrated the intended direction in the context of the Target.

SCHOOL TARGETS The 2017 – 2019 school Business Plan identified six achievement targets set by the school to improve student performance.

Each target reflected an area of student outcomes that could be measured, and that the school has determined should be strengthened or improved over the life of the Plan.

A range of Focus Statements – each underpinned with its own comprehensive set of strategies – informed the resourcing and specific initiatives directed towards each target’s achievement.

The information on the following pages relates to student achievement in 2019, the third and final year of the current Plan.

Page 6: BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Report 2019.pdf · SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2019 saw the final stage of the school’s third IPS Business Plan. A Framework for The Pursuit

TARGETS

1. Based on Schools Online data, the percentage of students with ‘Regular

Attendance’ (90%+), consistently exceeds Like Schools. Aspirational goal – the percentage of students with regular attendance approaches 70%.

There is considerable evidence that links student attendance to positive educational outcomes, including academic, social and emotional development.

A range of strategies were implemented at Bunbury SHS in 2017, 2018 and 2019 to enhance both student engagement and attendance that are outlined later in the Report. There is a clear statistical trend showing improvement in attendance when compared with baseline data.

The data shows continued consolidation across all aspects of attendance. This includes both the high level of ‘regular attendance’ and the lower levels of ‘At Risk’ attendance when compared to Like Schools and WA Public Schools.

ATTENDANCE OVERALL SECONDARY - BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

2. The number of students qualifying for a Bunbury Senior High School Kingia

Award for citizenship maintains an improvement trend each year for the life of the Plan. The Kingia Award is given to students who achieve high levels of school citizenship each year. The criteria include:

• At least 95% attendance

• A minimum ABE standard on Semester 1 and 2 reports

• No negative behavioural reports from teachers

New criteria for awarding a Kingia were established in preparation for the 2017 Business Plan, therefore, the data for 2017 formed the baseline for ongoing monitoring.

Target 2 was achieved in 2019.

3. The median ATAR of the top 67% of ATAR students will be equal to or

better than 80. Aspirational goal – achieve in the top 50 schools for ATAR achievement each year.

The school’s 2019 Year 12 ATAR students achieved good results. The median ATAR for all students was 75.85, while the median ATAR for the top 67% of students was 79.55. Three students achieved a 90+ ATAR and twelve students achieved an ATAR above 80.

Target 3 was achieved in 2017 and 2018, but not 2019.

4. Year 12 Attainment (ATAR >= 55, or Certificate II or higher) will maintain

an improvement trend each year for the life of the Plan. Aspirational goal – achieve 100% Attainment each year.

Year 12 Attainment (ATAR >= 55, or Certificate II or higher) is a Department of Education metric designed to reflect student’s readiness to move to further education or training.

The 2019 school results in relation to Attainment showed improvement from 95% in 2018 to 98.01% in 2019.

Target 4 was achieved.

Page 9: BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Report 2019.pdf · SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2019 saw the final stage of the school’s third IPS Business Plan. A Framework for The Pursuit

5. Year 9 student Progress and Achievement will be equal to or better than

Australian Schools in all aspects of NAPLAN.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy is a system-level program of evaluation of Australian students’ achievement in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The NAPLAN assessments measure performance in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The school target in relation to NAPLAN considers both outright achievements at Year 9 level and progress from Year 7 to Year 9.

Pleasingly, in all years of the plan, the school has recorded particularly strong results in NAPLAN.

Both Achievement and Progress was higher than Australian Schools for all aspects of NAPLAN in 2019. Student’s writing performance was especially impressive, showing achievement and progress well above all schools (Australian, Public, Like).

Target 5 was achieved for all aspects of NAPLAN in 2019.

6. The percentage of students qualifying for OLNA by the end of Year 10

exceeds Like Schools. Aspirational goal – 80% of students achieve OLNA requirements by the end of Year 10.

The Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) was introduced as a requirement for achievement of the Western Australian Certificate of Education in 2016. Students can pre-qualify for OLNA through their performance in Year 9 NAPLAN, or qualify through a series of OLNA opportunities provided during Years 10, 11 and 12.

OLNA assesses each student’s performance in reading, writing and numeracy. Bunbury SHS has developed a range of targeted initiatives to identify student’s literacy and numeracy gaps, where they exist, and to ensure that each student has access to individual and collective support to address those and enable successful completion of OLNA. In 2019, we fell slightly behind Like Schools in regards to our target for Year 10 students qualifying for their OLNA. Interestingly, despite not achieving this specific target, our OLNA results for Years 11 and 12 were much more encouraging.

Shedworks Pathway

Bunbury SHS Shedworks is an off-site Senior School Engagement Program that is highly practical and targeted to students who find a traditional academic setting challenging. Shedworks has been operating as an annexe to the school since 2009.

Once again the Shedworks provided opportunities, inspiration and support for the student intake to explore develop and expand skills and knowledege through the completion of independent and client-based projects that reflected the pathway certificate courses they were enrolled in – plumbing, building and construction, engineering, retail cosmetics, education support, light auto and heavy diesel – delivered through South Regional TAFE and the Bunbury Trade Training Centre network. All fourteen of the 2019 Sheddies secured a

place on a pathway course and, apart from the plumbing course which is spread across year 11 and 12, all of them successfully attained their qualification.

In addition to enrolment in a pathway course the Sheddies are expected to seek and engage in relevant ongoing work placements, which expose them to the world of work and is effectively a ‘long interview’ which gives the employer a chance to see full potential over a sustained period.

Each year work placements result in offers of employment/apprenticeships and 2019 was no different, with students securing apprenticeships in carpentry, metal fabrication and plumbing being secured after block or long-term placements.

Other networking opportunities continue to be accessed through our ongoing association with Riding for the Disabled (WA), for whom we volunteer our service to help with the upkeep of the facility and assist with supporting the clients as they ride. This is an opportunity for Sheddies to learn about a section of the community they may not have had interaction with, and their resumes can be filled with an authentic experience. RDA is well supported by local philanthropic organsiations and a cross-section of the Chamber of Commerce and offers of work trials for our students have been made as a consequence of this involvement.

Enterprise represents the backbone of the program through which much of our literacy and numeracy is embedded, as well as providing Sheddies with the entirely positive experience of seeing their creations (Giant Jenga was a hit this year!) being purchased by the wider school community and commisioned for use in and around the school. Each year we endeavour to hold at least one market stall

Page 15: BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Report 2019.pdf · SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2019 saw the final stage of the school’s third IPS Business Plan. A Framework for The Pursuit

at the Bunbury Craft Markets and, with time running out, and after a final burst of effort, we managed to put on a very successful stall within weeks of year’s end.

One final highlight of the year occurred at the 2019 Shedworks Graduation. On the day, our designated MC was struck with nervous apprehension and declined to officiate. By coincidence, Shedworks’ 2017 ‘Shed Allrounder’ and soon to be commercial pilot – Luke Sharpe – was attending the ceremony as a guest and, with no warning or preparation, heeded our call for him to step in as MC. He did an amazing job and set an inspiring example to the outgoing group, of what can be achieved if you want something badly enough – living up to the Shed adage: If you want to be it - do it!

Students chose and were accepted into the following senior school

programs/options for 2020:

Parent Feedback

“I would like to say thank you for all the support you have given STUDENT this year. Being in your programme this year has been the best thing ever for her. Her confidence has improved so much. She stopped hating school and looked forward to attending. The support to get work experience was also fantastic, which also led to her getting a job and securing a traineeship for next year in Vet Nursing. This has been life changing for STUDENT and has gained so much from this year.”

“Perfect combination of program and teacher. Ms Dowling’s connection with my child has been the key to get the results she has. My child made significant leaps this year.”

“I honestly don't believe STUDENT would have even tried for the scholarship program let alone have a place if he had not been in the PBL class. It was about his self worth and after years of not achieving in standard education that he felt it was not even worth the effort trying to do well. He is so much better off for the PBL class and is now able to see that he can do well if he tries.”

“Such a good program, really focuses on them and their interests. It got us through another year, without this program I don’t think we would have made it to the end.”

“I found that my child has learnt more and progressed further with his learning in PBL than he would have in mainstream school.”

In 2019 the Year 7 and Year 9 students undertook NAPLAN testing in the

components of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and

punctuation), and numeracy.

Year 7 students achieved above expected in Achievement and Progress for all

components of NAPLAN when ICSEA and prior performance are considered.

Year 9 students at Bunbury SHS performed at or above the Australian Schools

mean for both Achievement and Progress in all components.

These positive results highlight the significant progress students have made at

Bunbury SHS and are indicative of the support provided by school staff in

classes, and in a range of other targeted interventions – such as one-to-one

Direct Instruction, specialised Connect communities, Homework Club, and Maths

Club.

Page 19: BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Report 2019.pdf · SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2019 saw the final stage of the school’s third IPS Business Plan. A Framework for The Pursuit

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: OLNA

OLNA is an online literacy and numeracy assessment. It is an aspect of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and requires students to demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy by the end of Year 12.

Students who have achieved Band 8 or higher in any of the three components of reading, writing and numeracy in their Year 9 NAPLAN are acknowledged as having demonstrated proficiency in using a range of ACSF Level 3 skills in that component and are not required to sit the corresponding OLNA test.

In 2019, the fourth year of the OLNA WACE requirement, Year 12 students at Bunbury SHS achieved outstanding results, with 100% achieving the standard in Reading, 99.01% achieving the standard in Writing and 98.02% achieving the standard for Numeracy. This was well above the achievement of Australian schools.

Page 20: BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Report 2019.pdf · SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2019 saw the final stage of the school’s third IPS Business Plan. A Framework for The Pursuit

CURRICULUM INNOVATION AND STEM INITIATIVES

The availability and use of technologies and STEM-based programs to enrich student learning continued in 2019.

Interactive Media

Interactive Media is an off-grid elective that is offered to students from Years 7 to 12. The elective provides these students with an opportunity for independent inquiry and project-based learning. The focus is on students working independently and collaboratively as the need arises, to plan and develop a game for a 2D or 3D platform. The students seek each other out for collaboration based on their areas of expertise. For example, one student may ask another person to help with developing a soundtrack for their game if they know that they have music expertise.

IM Video Game Showcase 2019

The IM Video Game Showcase is an annual event in which Interactive Media students have an opportunity to show off their video game creations. Following on from the great success of the inaugural event in 2018, this year’s Showcase proved equally popular and engaging for both students and staff. Organised and run by the students of the after-school elective, the IM Showcase allowed the students to receive constructive feedback on the games they had designed and developed. They also had the satisfaction of seeing their games in action as people battled each other in a tournament, vied for top scores and places on the leader board or simply enjoyed the experience of playing a game.

Robotics The Robotics Club is offered during lunchtimes and culminates in teams of our students participating in the RoboCup challenge at Curtin Stadium.

In 2019 we entered two teams into this competition. Our Year 7/8 girls’ team came 6th in the final, which was a commendable result as it was their first time in the competition.

Page 21: BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Report 2019.pdf · SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2019 saw the final stage of the school’s third IPS Business Plan. A Framework for The Pursuit

Tournament of Minds Early in 2019, students from the Year 7 GAT class were involved in a Tournament of the Minds trial competition that involved cross-curricular involvement between Mathematics and Science Learning Areas. Students were divided into groups and given a specific problem, with the end result requiring a solution and a presentation/performance detailing how they had solved the problem with reference to a back-story. The task involved Science, Engineering and Mathematics skills and students were allocated time across those classes. Feedback from students was positive, and all groups were able to assess their performances and brainstorm ideas as to how they could improve for future Tournament of the Minds competitions.

Pedal Prix The Year 10 gifted and talented class worked on the Pedal Prix project during their HASS and Science lessons this year. The class had to work out the engineering needed to make the tricycle road-worthy, consider rider comfort and learn how to operate the vehicle. They tested the vehicle many times before they took it to the competition, held in Busselton each August.

Minecraft Education Teachers from a range of learning areas explored the use of Minecraft Education in their classes in 2019. This program was utilised in Mathematics, HASS and English, making curriculum links and engaging students in creative and critical thinking skills.

Solar Car Design and Technology students explored solar technology and built solar cars and tested them in the sunshine. They learned about the capture and storage of energy and learned about renewable energy and how it can be utilised.

GIFTED AND TALENTED SPECIAL PROGRAM (GAT)

2019 was the seventh year of the Gifted and Talented program at Bunbury High. Some goals for the program in 2019 was to support students in making even more links with tertiary institutions and industry experts, as well as the sharing of best practice through the professional learning community for GAT teaching staff.

An Education Assistant continued to support twice-exceptional students in the GAT program and to provide general support to those students exhibiting dysfunctional perfectionistic tendencies or other wellbeing issues.

VISUAL ARTS SPECIALIST PROGRAM (VASP)

There was success for VASP students in the public arena in 2019, both locally and nationally. Eight out of twelve artworks selected from Bunbury Senior High School for the Iluka Visions Art Exhibition were created by VASP students. We also had a high number of finalists in the 2019 Young Australian Art Awards, with nine out of the ten students awarded a gold medal, coming from VASP.

The Year 10 VASP group once again enjoyed the annual camp in Melbourne, where they participated in workshops with professional artists, visited galleries, RMIT and other cultural institutions.

Year 9 VASP attended an overnight camp in Fremantle, having participated in workshops and viewing of exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on the first day and then a visit to Cottesloe the next day, to explore Sculpture by the Sea.

Towards the end of the year students from Year 8 – 10 VASP collaborated to decorate a Big Splash WA dolphin (a mental health program that uses art to promote positive mental health and wellbeing). The sculptural piece will be relocated to the grounds of BSHS in 2020.
