Hello to you out there in Subaru land.
Last Sunday we experienced the long awaited revival of the Observation run,
well done Paul E for taking the initiative and getting this fun day trip revived.
It was a fantastic day; the route was interesting and the scenery spectacular,
well done. The kids enjoyed hunting the answers out as we drove along.
If you had not heard we are going to send you via email a link to the elec-
tronic copy of the Bull sheet to experience how it will appear.
The printing and mail out of the mag are our largest cost and in an effort to
curb the cost to members we would like to know if you prefer the electronic
version and stop receiving your hard copy. The trial runs to the New Year.
As usual as the weather warms up the club trips dry up, which is weird as this
is great weather for getting out and about.
If you have not done it before, how about giving running a day trip a try? It’s
easy:
• Step 1: Think of somewhere or something YOU want go to
• Step 2: Do a little bit of homework,
o When do I want to do this
o How much does it cost, entry fees, camping fees
o What is the best way of getting there and how far away is it
o do I need a day, a weekend or longer to do this
o do I need any special driving or activity skills,
o What do I need to bring, recovery gear, camping stuff, tools,
games
• Step 3: Talk to the trip co-ordinator and fill in a trip sheet
• Step 4: Run the trip
Step 5: HAVE FUN
Speaking of trips, please bring a deposit of $10 each for the Christmas dinner
at The Walkers Arms on the 16th of November. There is still room to join in.

Hi guys
Another month, another mag and this one is full of fab pictures
and trip reports.
This month our President embellishes our cover with the lovely
Grace Gent being presented with the
4 wheel driver of the year award
At the general meeting this month we will be honouring our
illustrious president with his life membership presentation well
deserved to a man who gives his all to our fabulous club and
then some, should be a night to remember.
Writing up this report reminds me of the old superman cartoons
with all you members out there being my Jimmy Olsens, Louis
Lanes and of course Clark Kents chasing down the stories and
capturing the events that take place in our Subaru Metropolis.
Sending them to your trusty Perry White for editing into the next
Awesome magazine.
I hope you all enjoy the fruit of our labours.

UPCOMING TRIPS

Or if member/visitor has not been to Peake before phone Glenn to organise a time to meet at Peake pub. Cost - $15 per car per day Degree of Difficulty - Easy to challenging Peake is property located located 50km from Tailem Bend on the Lameroo road; it basically consists if sand and rocks. It offers everything from beginner sticky right through to advanced sand driving. You can pick what you want to tackle - there is no obligation to try anything you are not comfortable with. Camping is fully self sufficient.

Beach Driving Training Day, Goolwa Beach Saturday 30th November Trip Leader – Paul Ewins Contact – 0457 569 868 Degree of Difficulty – Easy/Medium Meet at 9.30am – Goolwa Beach Car Park This day will cover planning, driving and recovery for sand/beach driving.
Annual Beach Day – Silver Sands, Aldinga Beach Sunday 19th January 2014 Trip Leader – Grace Gent Contact – 0433 792 474 Degree of Difficulty – Easy Meet at 9.30am – Car park off Norman Road. (Follow brown tourist sign from South Road). Our Annual day of family fun and family argu-ments constructing gazebo settlements on the beach (plus a swim, a lay about and some beach cricket). Admission to the beach is free be-fore 10am. After 10am it is $6.00.

Clare Valley Riesling Trail Bike Ride Saturday 8th – Monday 10th 2014 (March Long Weekend) Trip Leader – Grace Gent Contact – 0433 792 474 Degree of Difficulty – Easy/Medium Likely to meet at and stay at Clare Caravan Park or similar – TBA The Riesling Trail runs for 36 kilometres along the old Riverton to Spalding railway line between the towns of Auburn and Clare, with a new section terminating 9km north of Clare at Barinia siding. The Riesling trail was one of the first rail trails to be developed in South Australia. The trail travels past many cellar doors and other at-tractions (bring your pannier bags). Autumn is an ideal time to visit. The trail is gen-erally quite flat and is suitable for all fitness levels. You would be surprised at how far you can actually ride. I did this ride years ago while very out of shape in hot weather and went quite a distance so if you are thinking you are too out of shape for this – you are not! Distances on the trail: Barinia to Clare: 9km Clare to Sevenhill: 7km Sevenhill to Penwortham: 5km Penwortham to Watervale: 5km Watervale to Leasingham: 2km Leasingham to Auburn: 8km

We may stay at Beachport in the Caravan Park and do day trips to the park or just bush camp in Little Dip. Stay tuned for more informa-tion as we plan this trip.

Red Banks Conservation Park, October
Long Weekend
On Friday morning I met Debbie Clements on
Hampstead Road and we drove to Tarlee together
where Helen Manson was waiting for us at the silos
with the caravan. From here I led the way to Burra
and out to Redbanks, 15km from the town. Being a
long weekend, we were expecting a crowd, but the
park was almost deserted and remained so for most
of the weekend.
After setting up camp and relaxing for a while, we
went for a walk to look at the famous red banks along
the creek bed which give this beautiful spot it's name. After com-
ing out of the dry creek bed and walking around the 'oval' we
spotted an echidna who happily posed for some photos. After we
got back to camp, happy hour commenced and the mosquitoes
descended, despite the aridness.
On Sunday morning, we were entertained for a good hour or two
by a Bearded Dragon basking itself in the sun on a log next to
Debbie's camper. In the afternoon we went for a drive to look at
the famous Midnight Oil 'Diesel and
Dust' house just outside of Burra.
We found took a dirt track which
ran past it up the hill back into town. While in town, we also
discovered that there are excellent camping facilities at the
Showgrounds. We also drove out to Burra Gorge to have a look
around. While it is a lovely spot, there were lots of families
camped there for the weekend, so I am glad we were camping at
Red Banks which is much more peaceful with only ten sites!
The next day we had packed up by lunchtime and decided to
travel home via Kapunda to beat the holiday traffic. We stopped
in Kapunda for a bite to eat at the Bakery and visited the
Community Craft shop. We each bought something
small and Helen bought some local lemons so she could
make Debbie some lemon butter. From Kapunda we
each parted ways. We all had a great weekend. Red
Banks really is a beautiful place.

Katarapko Long Weekend – October 2013 Sue and Richard arrived early, very early, in fact more than a week early to get in before
the school holidays and hold the club’s preferred Site 35. And it worked, but maybe was-
n’t necessary – over the first few days there appeared to be almost nobody else in the park,
and certainly no-one came to lay claim to Site 35. The track in was in good condition with
little of the horrible corrugations we have previously encountered.
The weather was good, but on Sunday the wind picked up, however the real blow started
on Monday afternoon. Gusts were officially recorded at over 100 km/h at Loxton just
across the river and our caravan site was quite exposed to wind. The caravan shook wildly
and held up, but the pop-up shower and toilet tents popped down – right to their bottom
pegs! The portaloo was knocked off its perch, fortunately without spilling. It was also 30
deg, so we had to keep some windows open – the result was a lot of gritty dust in the van.
The next day we had about 12mm rain, but this didn’t stop Andrew and Val bringing in
their caravan, complete with enclosed annexe, carefully picking an ideal spot under the
trees. But the next morning, we saw Andrew unpegging everything and moving the cara-
van a few metres; apparently he was kept awake half the night as twigs and bits of tree fell
on the roof as it was still fairly windy! Val hadn’t twigged to the problem; her solution
was to simply sleep through it.
That evening Val saw a torch bobbing down the entry track, and eventually a voice came
out of the dark “Do you have a 4WD to pull out our bogged car?” The car, with its four
lads, had got bogged not far from the gate near the bottom end of Mallee Drive – two lads
had walked about 3.5km for help along the track with sticky clay sections, on a moonless
night with just one torch! So Richard and Andrew set off in the Prado to assist. The re-
covery was very easy – we reckon that they should have been able to push it out.

The wind continued for a few days, so our first campfire was on the Friday of the long week-
end. Glen and Helen, past members of the Subie Club, arrived after dark and Kevin and
Bernie around 10pm. Getting the boat off and setting up their large Trak Shak camper trailer
in the dark was fascinating to see.
On Saturday morning Brett (Andrew’s son) and Kathyrn and kids arrived, followed by Rus-
sell and Genevieve (past members) and son Luke, then Dave aka Ricco and Kelly (past
members) and kids, then Wayne (friend of Dave in Holden 4WD Club). Our group was now
complete, and not one Subaru!
Happy hour was as usual at 5pm – a great spread and much hilarity later around the camp-
fire. Around 8pm we were surprised to see a bright light coming silently up the creek; two
kayaks paddling in the dark, one with a very bright head torch, the other with only a very
weak light if any. They returned later, and also made two trips the next night, one around
3am! Contraband perhaps?
On Sunday, Kevin and Bernie went off to celebrate their wedding anniversary with lunch at
Banrock Station. The rest of us had to put up with what we had brought, which was still
pretty good. Kayaks were pulled out and put to good use, kids went swimming, etc. Some
went to Cobdogla Museum which includes the Humphrey Pump, and Sue went to Barmera
Markets. Richard did his good deed for the day picking up hundreds of pieces of glass be-
hind the camp area. Thoughtless b…s. Later, others picked up more glass in other areas.
That evening, while around the campfire, we heard a loud crack which sounded like a rifle
shot to some of us, followed by another bang an hour later. We reported these to police.
During the weekend, police went past at least 4 times towards campsites 36 to 39 and pinged
at least one person for hoon driving. National parks are not rally courses.
On Monday, about half the group packed up and reluctantly returned to civilisation. Two
more families left on Tuesday leaving Kevin and Bernie, Richard and Sue to see out the
week. Wednesday was a bit trying at 35 degrees. We left the following Sunday after a suc-
cessful trip, despite the weather extremes.

good roadworthy condition with a minimum of 3rd party property insurance? Do
you have a fire extinguisher with you on club trips? It’s a club rule that you carry
one. What about a first aid kit, the club has quite a good one to borrow at any time.
All we ask is that you replace anything that gets used or removed from the kit.
