WestGen DaysAs a member owned and directed organization, our Annual General Meeting is an important event on our calendar. With members spread across a vast geography, we recognize that attending the meeting isn’t convenient for many. For that reason, over the last decade we’ve worked to enhance the AGM by adding seminars and social functions to make it into an event, now named WestGen Days; and we provide members from outside of the BC lower mainland with financial assistance to offset their travel expenses.

WestGen Days 2015 will be held from March 23-25 in Chilliwack, BC, and guests are encouraged to consider staying for the Westcoast Classic Sale on Wednesday evening and the BC Holstein Spring Show on Thursday. Monday evening will kick off the event with a wine and cheese welcome reception. The annual meeting takes place Tuesday morning and will be followed by the unveiling of the plans for the new WestGen headquarters. After lunch, guests will learn

about a study local veterinarian Marty Darrow did on the practical application of genomics, and about the new dairy selection indexes Canada is implementing from Semex VP of Genetics, Pierre Laliberte. That evening will feature a dinner with the WestGen board and special guests and some good old fashioned carnival style entertainment.

After completing another successful year, the WestGen group of companies is poised for continued growth in 2015. This growth is only possible with the strong support from producers across Western Canada. We are your company and continue to push forward with initiatives that gain our members access to technologies that will help keep the west at the forefront.

In this edition of the Bullseye, you will read that over 100 donors have now been serviced through Boviteq West. Further, I’m pleased to report that the results being achieved at Boviteq West are extremely good and those strong results will serve to convince others of its value. It is but one example, but a poignant one to illustrate that WestGen exists to pioneer and is different from other semen companies operating in Western Canada.

As an owner in the Semex Alliance, we see continued expansion and growth on the international front as well. Top quality genetic products are a given, but consultative tools like SemexWorks help set this brand apart around the world and here at home. As owners of this company through your ownership of WestGen, you should indeed be very proud.

WestGen has created its aggressive path for growth with your board and senior management team recently establishing the company’s strategic 10 year plan. While there is more to be added, the framework within which we will operate has been established. Included in that plan is transition into our new home on Angus Campbell road in Abbotsford. Concept plans continue to be developed and a date for construction will be decided in the near future.

Christmas is a time to give thanks and this year more than ever we recognize not one but 70 years of commitment and dedication. WestGen is Canada’s oldest AI Company owned and directed by the Dairy and Beef producers of Western Canada. The past 70 years much like the last one have brought success and challenges to the business and through this all we remain committed and focused on our customers. Our company values, our esteemed customers, our valued partners and incredible staff are what fuel our growth and success. I’d like to take this opportunity to take a pause and say thank you, to each and every one of you who have joined us on our journey as a director, staff member or customer. It is the spirit of teamwork and working together in partnership that allows us to enjoy success.

On Wednesday we’re excited to host Jack Rodenburg of Dairy Logix to present a half day Cow Signals workshop, showing the basics of the Cow Signals training program in the classroom and practically with a hands-on session at the UBC Dairy Education & Research Center. This will be followed by Dr. Nina Von Keyserlingk presenting on the

science behind the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle and then hosting a discussion on how to successfully implement the code’s recommendations in your operation. Rounding out the day will be a presentation by Dr. Lisa McCrea on the use of the Aqua Cow Rise System for down cow therapy. As the ProAction Animal Care program is rolled out, we want to do our part to help producers make sure their operation meets the standards and that they’re maximizing the productivity of their genetic investment by ensuring cow comfort is a priority.

Whether it’s because genomic testing has uncovered an animal having inherited a favourable combination of genes, another family member outside of your control has helped attract attention to the one you own – or perhaps simply a customer that inquires about embryos on a cow leaving an impressive legacy, these opportunities left unanswered will soon enough disappear again. WestGen announced the Gator Giveaway Promotion in late October with a great deal of excitement. It’s the biggest grand prize that the company has ever awarded and so naturally the promotion campaign was enthusiastically embraced by customers across the 4 western provinces.

When customers purchased 20 doses from a select group of our best Proven and Genomax Immunity+ bulls, they were entered into a draw to win 1 of 3 great priz-es – a GoPro Video Camera, a $1,500 VISA Gift Card and the grand prize – a 550 John Deere Gator! In a number of cases we have customers that made multiple purchases to increase their odds of winning.

In total 347 ballots were entered into the draw – so in fact the odds of winning were nearly 1 in 100! The promotion was embraced in all 4 provinces with 251 dairy produc-ers that had a chance to win the gator! There were 104 BC customers entered, 80 from Alberta, 21 from Saskatchewan and 46 from Manitoba. There were also 67 customers that have multiple chance to win prizes – the vast majority from BC. Not only Holstein breeders took part. We had both Jersey and Ayrshire producers with entries as well!

This promotion was a great success. It offered great prizes and encouraged produc-ers to use what WestGen confidently promotes as their very best genetic products. It was a win-win for sure. Benner Holsteins Ltd. is a name known far and wide for the cows bred by the Penner family on their Steinbach, Manitoba farm. The farm began 60 years ago when Ben Penner started with 11 cows, and three generations of the family have worked to build it to what it is today, 1000 cows on 1700 acres of land. Over the years Don & Shirley Penner shared ownership of the farm with his father, his 3 brothers and now with his sons, Tim and Scott. The herd began registering in 1971 and daughter Laurie Funk remains involved in the family farm by looking after that task today, no small feat when you consider how many ‘J’ names she needs to create! In addition to the immediate family, 2 of Don’s brothers and 3 employees work on the farm. The herd includes 350 milking cows, of which 240 are milked in a 5 year old barn with 4 Lely robots and 110 are milked in the tie-stall.

Benner Holsteins was recognized with their first Master Breeder Shield in 2001, and achieved their second in impressive fashion immediately following the minimum 14 years that must pass between awards. How does a herd that doesn’t make pursuit of a Master Breeder Award their ultimate goal achieve this feat, you ask? The Penner’s recipe is one of aggressive genetic improvement through the regular use of all breed improvement tools and a lot of flushing, con-ventionally and in vitro, of their best females. The majority of cows contributing points to this shield were bred in the pre-genomic era. The strategy at that time was to fill the barn with sound cows sired by the best proven bulls (Rudolph, James, Progress, Leduc, Goldwyn and Manifold are mentioned as the ones that worked the best) from true transmitting cow families that would grow the herd so they could continue to expand the operation.

80-85% of the herd now traces their pedigree back to the prolific J family for which they are on the map. The 4 cows contributing the most points include Benner Luke Jean VG-85 24*, Benner

Progress Jacinda GP-82 23*, Benner Aeroline Jemima VG-86 13* and Benner Goldwyn Jamarco VG-87 11*. The herd average is currently 10,241kg 3.38% fat and 2.92% pro-tein. It includes 1 ME, 3 EX, 106 VG and 183 GP cows. Over the years, many cows were also sold into the US (29 of which scored Excellent and 41 Very Good), but aren’t eligible to contribute points to the shield. They also enjoy breeding some cows to show and consider them downright fun to work with. This love was further developed in Tim and Scott through 10 years of participation in the WCC program, while Don served as the Team Manitoba coach for 9 years. Don has also been President of the Manitoba Holstein Association.

In the genomic era, the Penners have embraced this new tool available to them and now use 95% young sires which they access as early as possible to fill contracts on their highest indexing heifers. Their criteria emphasizes production and herdlife while keeping conformation in mind, so they don’t lose what they’ve built into the herd. They spread their risk by using a wide variety of the top young bulls. The best heifers begin flushing by nine months, and the cows and lower ranked heifers are used as recipients. Having developed a large bull market, very little sexing is done, though when flushing a few cows that have proven their transmitting abilities, they’ve had good success using sexed semen to make more daughters from them. About 7 -10 bulls a year go to AI studs, with Benner Jerry being a Class Extra sire they bred that was owned by Semex.

The Penners are incredibly passionate about breeding Holstein cattle and aren’t afraid to sell a good one, as that provides a challenge to replace her by breeding an even better one. WestGen congratulates the Penner family on their efforts which have earned them this fantastic achieve-ment they’ll be recognized for in New Brunswick this April.

If you are struggling with the effects of digital dermatitus on your dairy take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. In fact, most dairies in western Canada deal with the chronic condition to some extent. Many farms we work with use foot baths as a preventative measure and use regular main-tenance work on hoof care to combat the problem and yet, occasional flare ups are still a fact of life. So what can you do?

A product that WestGen carries that has generated positive results is called Provita Hoofsure Combat. It is one of a suite of hoof care products the company carries to aid in keeping heel warts under control. Varying degrees of success have been reported with the products, however Combat, in particular is gaining some traction. Combat is a unique film-forming spray containing tea-tree oil and organic acid providing persistent longer-lasting activity. Used as a spot spray in the parlour, it has proven to be one of the most effective ways to treat warts. Some producers also use the product during hoof trimming. Its waterproof, breathable film promotes natural healing. While products used in foot baths are often quickly contam-inated and contact with the foot is short-lived, using the Combat spray while cows are in the parlour being milked has proven to be a cost-effective way to treat warts and to provide containment to new cases.

When to use:

At first sign of lameness spray the affected area, ideally re-applying every milking for 3 to 7 days. The product can be used after hoof trimming.

If you are struggling with digital dermatitus, you are also most certainly losing production in your cows. And while a good prevention program is always preferred, the reality is that sudden flare-ups can still occur. When they do, spraying with Provita Hoofsure Combat in the parlour is an excellent way to get the upper hand quickly.
