TransitionsNovember is a time when all of us at school are transiting from one year to the next. Students begin or end their exams and others are involved in fun activities like Year 8 with Picnic in the Park. Some students in our junior years have just been to Children’s University graduation ceremony at Adelaide University, to receive their certificates for work accomplished in their own time. Some Year 12 students have finished their exams and will soon have time to think of the two major transition events which celebrate their movement from school days viz., the End of Year Mass and the Graduation Ball.
End of Year Mass of Thanksgiving Tuesday 4th December 2018This is the largest and most significant event on our community calendar. You are an absolutely essential part of it. In this Year of Youth 2018 we give thanks for your children, gifts from God to you forever, and gifts to us who spend our days with them over many years. Your invitation is a personalised one and we ask that you respond as soon as possible but no later than Friday 23rd November. Please note that because of space restrictions families with daughters in Reception to Year 11 are allocated two tickets per family. This does not include your daughters who will be seated with their class.
Families with daughters in Year 12 will be allocated four tickets per family. All invitations will be forwarded to your family on this Friday 16th November. Thank you for honouring this commitment you made as an enrolling parent, to support your daughter, and to foster the spiritual and social life of the whole community.

The 40 Year reunion 1978 – 2018
A member of the Committee who organised this reunion, Raffaela Comacchio, observed that, even after 40 years, when some former class mates have not seen one another at all, there is a bond that cannot be found with any other people. This particular reunion had a special dimension as it brought together former class mates and a group of the staff who had the privilege of teaching them at St. Dominic’s in 1978!
The staff, who joined together either for the school tour, or later for the refreshments at the Caledonian Hotel, included Polly Gow, who made the trip from Sydney in order to be there; Colleen Dennehy; Murray Lamshed; Peter Roberts; Pam Ronan; and from the Dominican Sisters community Sr. Shirley Macklin, Sr. Noreen Reynolds, and myself.
Invitation: Parents & Friends + Fete wind-up Wednesday 21st November 2018
Next Wednesday night is a special time to look back at what has been achieved by these fantastic parent groups and to give thanks to those who will be moving on. The Parents and Friends meeting commences at 7:20 to be followed by the Fete Meeting at 8:00 pm.

Melbourne Cup CraftWe enjoyed making hats and fascinators on Melbourne Cup day last week. We worked in pairs with the Year One students. We used paper plates, patty pans and feathers to make our hats colourful
In and around the classrooms:
and interesting. We worked together with our partner to measure around our heads to make sure the headband was the right size. We think the results were very stylish!
REC
Gabrielle, Alexia, and Emma on The Nutcracker Float with the Australian Classical Youth Ballet at The Credit Union Christmas Pageant on Saturday. They were at Pultney Grammar School at 6am to get ready and their little legs walked and danced nearly 4km whilst their little arms waved to thousands of people!
Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary, Primary School Coordinator
Remembrance Day: We thank Ms Tarraran, Miss Delloso and Emily Bondza, Emma Casey, Hannah Cameron, Kaylee Schar, Eryn Merrit and Sari Rann from Year 6 who reverently lead us at our Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday.
I brought in some of my dad’s army reserve medals and I also had a special medallion which I shared. It belonged to my grandpa, who went to Vietnam. - Kaylee Year 6
Swimming Carnival: Well done to all our Year 6s for their enthusiastic participation in races and novelty events. Congratulations to our medal winners: 1st place Hannah Cameron, 2nd D’Arby Hawkins
The novelty events were fun because we were all able to participate and my favourite event was the Submarine race. It was a well organised afternoon. - D’ArbyIt was an exciting afternoon and even if you didn’t win a race you still got points and my favourite team, Aquinas won which was very pleasing for me. - Annabel
Correction: The Year 3 Class need to wear their Sport Uniform on a Tuesday and Thursday this term.
Assembly: The Reception Class were organised, focussed and proud of their presentation as they hosted this week’s Assembly.
Twilight Assembly: Reply slips are now due. It is a very important night for the girls and I know they have been rehearsing their parts. The evening will start promptly at 6:00pm.
Friday Morning Mass: Year 4 Chapel Mass this week will focus on the celebration of the Sacrament of First Communion. We ask families to be in the chapel by 8:10am and remind them that we have our shared morning tea in the Year 4 classroom afterwards.
Year 5 Zoo Snooze CampWith bags choc-o-block full of essential items such as cuddly toys and lollies, the Year 5 Class were ready to participate in whatever activities were thrown their way at Zoo Snooze last Thursday. No one however, had a bigger bag than Ms O’Leary who looked as though she had packed for a 3-month holiday to Canada. The Camp was a chance to learn more about the way animals live and adapt to their environments; which is the main topic for the Year 5 Science curriculum in Term 4. We were extremely lucky to have seen the Tapirs swimming on our night walk as our supervisor, David, explained that not all groups go to see this. We also watched the monkeys interacting with each other and some of them actually looked like they were texting on phones which was very funny. The Red Faces acts were also very entertaining; the Zoo ABC act won first place. We got to sleep in a room filled with animals, one of them being a snake that kept hissing and banging on the glass enclosure whilst we were trying to sleep. We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed our first school camp. Macy Lapsley and Charlotte Kretschmer

Kangaroo Island Field TripYear 10 Semester 2 Geography
The hidden beach at Stokes Bay was the most beautiful beach on the island, with its beautiful aqua coloured water which makes it look like a Hawaiian beach. - Jewel BinniSeal Bay was by far my favourite place. I found all the information given very interesting and the Seals absolutely adorable. - Alice HennessyI loved Admirals Arch, the view from there was fantastic! - Ayra GrewalThe best part of this trip was definitely going to Clifford’s Honey Farm and eating the Kangaroo Island Specialty Honey Ice Cream. - Adrianne LimgencoWe learnt a lot about Kangaroo Island’s coast line and the human impact on the beaches. - Truc Nguyen I found it fascinating how the beaches were all different even though they were only 20 minutes apart. This camp has educated me on what a healthy coastline should look like. - Faye VoWe visited many different beaches that allowed us to better appreciate the environment and the Australian coastline. - Lilliana DrapaniotisIt was beautiful to view the natural and unspoiled beaches, especially Pennington Bay with its glistening turquoise waters and white sandy beach. - Nadine Calleja
Business Faculty: Legal StudiesExcursion to the CourtsThis year the Year 11 Legal Studies students visited the Adelaide Magistrates Court and the District Court as part of their study of the Court System in SA.
At the Magistrates Court, the students were able to view the layout of the Courts and watch some cases, one of which involved 162 counts of theft from illegal use of a company credit card totalling $15,000; some cases were adjourned and there were some applications for bail. We were also able to view a case via video link whereby the defendant was on a video chat as she was in custody for breaching her bail terms whilst being intoxicated.
The students then walked across Victoria Square to the District and Supreme Courts. The cases here were far more serious and the court rooms quite formal in their procedures with judges and lawyers wearing black robes and wigs. In the District Court we heard a case regarding aggravated assault where a specialist in ballistics discussed the likelihood of a firearm being used as a weapon in a case. We also watched a case whereby the defendant had tried to influence a person to drop the charges against him. Both cases involved the use of a jury.
It was an extremely valuable experience for all the students as it gave them a better understanding of how the courts resolve disputes and ensure justice prevails in our legal system.
Special thanks to Ms Eustace who also attended the excursion.Mrs Tina Caruso, Legal Studies Teacher
Seeking Homestay FamilyAs many of you might know, St. Dominic’s Priory College accepts International Students. At the start of the 2019 school year, a new Year 10 student will be joining St Dominic’s from China, and will require homestay accommodation.
The Homestay payment to families is $300 per week for room and board. It is a tax free arrangement.
This would require a long-term commitment, with the student returning home for the long summer break.
Please contact Mrs Georgia Meyer on (08) 8267 3818 if you might be interested.
