Vale receives a $1,500 Grant from Walmart Foundation!

In an effort to find additional sources of funding to aid Vale in its mission to "move beyond our walls to create a more just and loving world", we applied and received a $1,500 Grant from the Walmart Foundation! This foundation grants funds to organizations that minister hunger and homeless programs within the communities served by Walmart Stores (this particular store is located at Jermantown Road and Lee Highway). Funds will go to support our new local hunger initiative, Neighbors Feeding Neighbors.

Neighbors Feeding Neighbors is a partnership with Crossfield Elementary (Fox Mill), Generosity Feeds, and other churches to address hunger needs in local Oakton and Vienna schools. We are launching a “Backpack Buddies” program to provide breakfast, snacks and weekend meals for students living in poverty who often go without meals. This new initiative complements our other local hunger and homeless missions [i.e.: First Sunday Mission, Southeast Food Pantry, FACETS Hot Meals Program, Hypothermia Prevention Shelters, The Lamb Center, and more] and addresses poverty in our immediate local community.

Wednesday Bible Study (10:30am) with Pastor Jeff

We are reading Detective Stories from the Bible by J. Ellsworth Kalas. Note that we will NOT meet on April 5th. Bible Study will resume on April 12th.

Men's Study Group (7:00pm) with Vic LarsonWe are reading a book written by J. Ellsworth Kalas, Parables from the Backside. We look forward to seeing you.

The Closet News

A new schedule for our volunteer days at The Closet is posted on the mission board. It covers the next 2 months: our days are: April 15th & 27th

(Sat. & Thurs.). This non-profit thrift store serves the local area by selling gently recycled clothes and wares at nominal prices and returns the profits to local charities and in scholarships to five area high schools. It also runs a truck mission to poorer areas in western VA where the goods are given to the needy. Please consider helping Vale continue this worthwhile mission by signing up to work on one of our days. If you have questions, contact Chris Olson at 703-476-4561 or [email protected], or Bette Rutherford at 703-620-2448 or [email protected].

23rd Annual UM Women’s Easter Eggstravaganza!

The Easter Eggs will be available for pick up in the church kitchen next Sunday, April 9th.

Thank you to all who ordered eggs this year!

Easter Egg Hunt Candy Donations (needed by April 9th, Palm Sunday)

We are looking for donations of individually wrapped candy (no nuts, please!), and very small party favors to put in the eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday, April 16. Please place your donations in the box marked “Easter Egg Hunt Donations” in the fellowship hall. Thank you, as always, for your support!

"A Way Forward" Commission was approved by the 2016 General Conference to do a complete examination and possible revision of every paragraph of the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and explore options that help to maintain and strengthen the unity of the church. More information can be found at http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/commission-on-a-way-forward.

The Virginia Conference will be praying for the commission during the week of April 2-8. Vale UMC has committed to pray on Thursday, April 6. You are invited to select a time to specifically pray for this important work. You can go to bit.do/ValePrays or follow the link from the "Vale Signups" tab on the church website.

If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jeff at [email protected] or call the church office at 703-620-2594.

Soldier Care Package Project: On March 24th, Vale’s United Methodist Women and Preschool joined with our neighbors at the Vale Club to participate in the Soldier Care Package Project. The UMW donated $100, plus snacks and toiletries, and our Preschoolers made cards that were included in the 24 packages sent to our military men and women serving overseas. The care packages will reach hundreds of soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. When we receive thank you notes from the soldiers, they never fail to mention how much they enjoyed the notes and pictures from our children at Vale. Thanks to all for making a soldier’s day brighter.

“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club, by the Beatles, is the most important rock & roll album ever made, an unsurpassed adventure in concept, sound, songwriting, cover art and studio technology by the greatest rock & roll group of all time” (Rolling Stone). Experience the

prolific album played in full note for note, cut for cut (sitars, orchestra, and kazoos included) by some of the world’s best musicians.

The performance is on Friday, June 23, 2017, at 8:00 pm, at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap, 1551 Trap Road, Vienna, VA 22182.

Please let Ed Lowry know by April 30 if you would like tickets. Tickets are $30; make checks payable to Vale UMC and note “UMM, Wolf Trap ticket” on the memo line. Checks must be given to Ed Lowry or received in the church office by May 21st.

Worship Service on DVD

Thanks to a generous donation of equipment, DVDs of the 8:15 worship service will be available after the 10:15 worship service. Perhaps you know someone who would love to participate in the life of the church by receiving a visit and video of worship. DVDs of the 10:15 service can be made by special request.

We would love to stream our worship services, but need someone to “champion” the project. If you have the interest, please see the Pastor.

Join the Bidding at Vale’s Silent Auction for Local Missions (April 30th)

Everyone's a Hero at Vale's Silent Auction for Local Missions, coming up on Sunday, April 30th, 11:30am to 1:30pm.

This will be Vale's 23rd Auction for Local Missions, which over the years has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for outreach programs supporting those in need. We are counting on a big turnout of bidders from the Vale congregation to help make it a success. Now is also the time to spread the word to family, friends, neighbors, co-workers—anyone you know who is up for a good time and all for a good cause.

For the complete list of auction items (updated weekly) that will be up for grabs, visit Vale’s website, www.valechurch.org, and look for the article on the Auction for Local Missions. But most important of all, by participating in Vale's Silent Auction for Local Missions you'll be supporting more than a dozen local outreach programs that are fighting hunger, poverty and homelessness in our community.

Questions or if you are interested in donating items or helping out the day of the auction, contact Auction Coordinator Bill DuBois at 703-609-8051 or [email protected], or see Bill at the grocery dollar table after service.

We Welcome Your Donation!

Your donation to Vale’s Silent Auction for Local Missions not only will put a smile on the winning bidder’s face, but also will directly help people in need in our community. And if you own a local business, what a great way to get exposure for your goods or services and be recognized for your generosity! Here are a few donation ideas to consider:

Jeff has blessed a "casual service" for the 10:15am Sunday worship, so everybody can walk out of the service, grab a coffee, and join in the fun! We will have free lunch for everybody (hot dogs, chips, and drinks), and we'll be joined by a full contingent of our Youth Group, the Boy Scout Troop, and all of your Vale Church friends.

Like last fall, this is a lot of relatively easy work - raking, pruning, and mulching. Think of it as an old-fashioned barn-raising (without the barn) - it is fun and very social, yet some great work gets done too. Please come help, even if you can do so only for an hour or two. What a great way to give a little time with no strings attached!

We always need tools, so please bring rakes, shovels, pruners, wheelbarrows, gloves, and tarps if you have them (put your name on them so they are returned when you go). Everyone in the church can help here, so please pitch in.

PS: Rain date is Sunday April 30th at 11:30am.

Interested in singing in the Chancel Choir, but can't make a long-term commitment? Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus' is being rehearsed from approximately 8:30-9pm each Wednesday evening. Join us to prepare this fantastic work for Easter!

Please contact Jan Smith at [email protected] for more information.

District Spring Prayer Breakfast

On Saturday, April 22, from 9:00 to 12:00 noon, Vale Church will host the District Spring Prayer Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall. Vale’s own Joanna Dietz, Minister of Mission and Service at Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester, will be the guest speaker. Breakfast will be served,
