As you may already know, I am a recent graduate of Hebrew College, and I bring with me a wide breadth of knowledge that I am excited to share at Temple Beth-El. I will be teaching throughout the year on a variety of topics, fo- cused on liturgy, prayer, and music. I hope to see you and meet you during these various learning opportunities. Creating music together is a holy task, and I especially invite you, if you consider yourself a musician or not, to join me in this endeavor. Please be on the lookout for information about how to raise your voices in song in the weeks and months to come. In addition to our singing and davening together, I truly hope to get to know many of you through conversation, hearing your stories, and learning about your connection to music. In an effort to make this happen, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me (email Cantor.Rosenblatt@ bethelrichmond.org ) to find a time to connect over coffee or tea. As we move forward, I know that a clergy transition can be difficult, and I will be working closely with Rabbi Knopf, Faith Kallman, Ramona Brand, and the rest of the staff to ensure that it all goes smoothly. Already I am filled with enthusi- asm for the collaboration ahead with Rabbi Knopf and I thank him for his support and guidance. I want to thank all of you for this opportunity to be your Cantor. As a newly ordained Cantor, it is as much a transition for me as it is for you. I thank you in advance for your patience and understand- ing as I take on this full-time position. Along these lines, self-care is important to my success as your Cantor. I will be coordinating with the Rabbi for our day off each week, and we will make sure to connect when emergencies arise in order to be attentive to your needs. A Note from Cantor RosenblattDear Temple Beth-El Family, If you can believe it, I have already begun my role as your Cantor! I look forward to building community through song, prayer, and connection

with all of you. Throughout my interview process with Beth-El, I was amazed by the warmth and love that this community has for each other. I must sincerely thank Ben Lewis and the Search Committee, Beni-ta Felmus and Rita Ruby, for their time and energy throughout the process. This Year's Torah Fund Pin! Atid is Hebrew for "future." As Women’s League for Con-servative Judaism enters its second century, Torah Fund begins its 77th year, and the State of Israel enters its 71st year. We look forward with joy to our future together with you, our supporters of Torah Fund. How do you envision your future? The seminaries of the Conservative/Masorti movement, which we support through Torah Fund, are doing the great work that helps us navigate our future together, as one people. Our sisterhoods provide the social and educational networks – the extended fami-ly – that help us go forward into our future, as Jewish women, with confidence.

The 5779 Torah Fund pin envelopes the Hebrew word for "future" with a stylized Magen David. It represents our wish for a distinctly Jewish future, for ourselves as individuals, for our families, and our communities. Order this year's Torah Fund pin for $180 from Marian Winer (804-270-7898) and have it ready to wear proud-ly for the High Holidays! We appreciate all contribu-tions of any amount.

The goal of The Havurah Projectis to bring our Beth-El community closer by nurturing newer and deeper relationships through Shabbat meals. Based on the registrants, we will form small groups with “deliberate mixing.” We want to connect people who don’t know each other (well), or who, because of demographics or geography, wouldn’t normally interact. Every month, one or two members of each Havurah will host their group for a potluck Shabbat dinner. Don’t know how to host a Shabbat dinner? Not to worry! We'll provide hosts with everything they need to confidently host a beautiful Shabbat experience.

2018 Confirmation Class GiftThanks to the families of this year's Confirmation Class, Ben Doniger, Courtlyn Dranoff, and Rebecca Falik, Temple Beth-El received a new rolling prayerbook cart for the Kiddush Room.

Due to time constraints during confirmation, these remarks were not made during the ceremony so we’d like to share them with you here.

From Courtlyn: Thank you all for sharing this special milestone in our lives. It has been a religious journey that started when we were very young. Through all the many lessons of learning Hebrew and religious instruction it has been a path that has shaped us to who we are spiritually today. We would like to thank our parents for supporting us all these years. We would like to thank the congregation for welcoming us officially to the temple. And last but certainly not least we would like to thank Rabbi Knopf for all his insight and knowledge that he has taught us this year. We appreciate him taking us to explore Wash-ington D.C. in a way we had not before. Oh let’s not forget all the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts too! Thank you.

From Becca: Hello everyone! On behalf of myself, Ben, and Courtlyn, we would like to thank you all for coming tonight. As a confirmation class, it is a tradi-tion to get something for the synagogue that can be used for the years to come. This year, we are purchasing a rolling bookcase for the kiddish room in or-der to keep the siddurim down there for when we have services. It is much needed and we are so glad we get to give this to the synagogue. Our hope is that it will be able to be used long into the future. Thank you.

News from Brown Religious School Ramona Brand, Director of Youth Learning

What's New, What's News Parents spoke; we listened! We sent a religious school survey out in the spring and received thoughtful feedback from many parents. Over the summer a team of parents, teachers, and Religious School committee members joined the professional staff in addressing the comments and concerns voiced in the survey. We have worked diligently to make changes that will enhance

our educational goals.• Skill Level Hebrew: Students (grades 2-6) will be placed in Hebrew classes according to their skill level so that we may better individualize instruction. Students will have the opportunity to move up during the year if they progress to the next level. • Trope, T’filah and Text Study with the Cantor: Cantor Rosenblatt will work with our 6th and 7th graders to deepen their understanding of and interaction with prayer and Torah. • More student engagement in Nesiyah services: Students will be provided with service roles during Family Services. All the Nesiyah programming will also intersect with a Jewish life-cycle event, holiday or special function. • Chugim: Our popular Chugim will be woven organically into our classroom Judaics program. We are striving for center-based classrooms to stimulate student interaction and hands-on activity. • Unit based curriculum: will integrate Hebrew and Judaics learning.

We are excited to announce that the school was awarded a second year grant to expand our Nature Center, support the “Living Classroom” program and to con-tinue providing students with interdisciplinary learning that integrates our green spaces with the understanding of Jewish text and teachings. Additionally, our teen program continues to build in scope and strength! Teen Program News!! This year we will be collaborating with Congregation Or Atid in the creation of RVA Koach. Koach, meaning strength, will help to strength-en the bonds of Conservative Jewish youth to their local Jewish community. See more about the teen program below. I warmly welcome you to our 2018-2019 academic school year. One of our sages once said that "education without vision is like a present without a

future". Our children are our future and it is our goal to guide them with vision as they learn and grow.August HappeningsCome to Camp Sababa! For the last seven years, kids from all over Richmond have enjoyed the fun way of getting connected to Judaism through singing, dancing, nature, crafts, drama, and special themes like Jewish Time Travel, Hiking Through Israel, and Color Wars. KOACH: Area Teen Programs Unite for 2018-2019 by Maddie Berger, Youth Programs Coordinator Temple Beth-El and Congregation Or Atid are excited to announce a collaboration of youth and teen programming. The youth and teen programs at Temple Beth-El enjoyed growth and expansion this past year, which included a new Teen Lounge, exciting social events, and thought-provoking speakers. The religious schools of both congregations shared several youth and teen events that sparked a desire to do more! After several meetings between parents and leaders of the two synagogues, including one with teens, we are excited to announce the enactment of RVA KOACH, a combined conservative youth experience in Richmond. Koach (Hebrew for 'strength') will help build the bond of conservative Jewish youth to their local Jewish community. Koach has also become the acronym for the program's mission.

K – Knowledge: provide Conservative Jewish education designed to engage students in thoughtful, open, and inquisitive discussionsO – Opportunities: allow youth to participate in acts of tikkun olam, in leadership development- with the initiation of the teen board, and in fun and meaningful events.

A - Anchors: enable the synagogues and staff to become something that youth can depend on and feel comfortable with, an ethical and emotional anchor to help them make positive decisions.C- Community: allow the youth of both synagogues to develop friendships with each other as part of the same Ruach/Kadima/USY chapter. H - Healthy Relationships: provide a safe space where participants of all ages can feel accepted, heard and have meaningful experiences.

In addition to youth events, the teens of both synagogues will have post-B'nei Mitzvah classes together, expanding their horizons beyond their own syna-gogues. One of the students from this past year remarked, "the best part about our class is that I feel like I have a voice, and even though my opinions may be different than others' I always feel validated and that my opinions matter." In the spirit of collaboration, events and teen classes will alternate locations between the two synagogues run under the leadership of Madeline Berger with direct oversight from Ramona Brand, Rabbi Michael Knopf and Rabbi Hal Schevitz. We are so excited to enact this program in the coming school year!

Staff Changes at TBEKrista Fidlow, Communications Director, will leave Temple Beth-El as a full-time staff member at the end of August. Her husband took a job in Los Angeles, so they are west-coast bound! She will continue doing work for the temple remotely on a per-project basis. She is sad to leave Richmond, and she will especially miss this wonderfully warm congregration. For the time being, you can continue to reach her at [email protected], so email her any time!

Hannah Rose Imburg joins staff as Member-ship Engagement & Program CoordinatorHannah has been a member of Temple Beth-El for 29 years. She is extremely excited about following in her Mother and Father’s footsteps, to help serve the temple and its community. With a Bachelor of Art in Visual Art from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Hannah has over 7 years' experi-ence in programming and event planning. Hannah is looking forward to working close-ly with TBE committees. Stop by the office or send an email to [email protected] and say hello!

Why Should You Join the Chevra Kadisha at Beth-El?During Yom Kippur services in 2003, Rabbi Cred-itor explained the state of our current process at Beth-El for preparing our loved ones for a prop-er Jewish burial. We did not have a true group of individuals who had taken on this most important mission each of us can do for one another. He announced that there was an effort to re-vitalize the Chevra Kadisha and requested that interested individuals “step up to the plate.” Rabbi Knopf has continued to support this important mitzvah. I am one of the men who 15 years ago committed him-self to become involved and serve those who cannot serve themselves.

After several meetings where we discussed and were taught the proper method of Tahara (prepar-ing the deceased), we were finally ready to perform the task. As it is not allowed to merely watch the procedure, we all had to proceed without a dress rehearsal. I can assure you, all of us were appre-hensive, but we applied what we had learned and performed this most important Mitzvah.

I cannot tell you what a sense of satisfaction came over each of us. As the ritual proceeded, we actual-ly felt as if the met (deceased) was aware of what we were doing and his countenance seemed to smile on us. It was a most profound revelation that none of us expected. There was no doubt in any of our minds that we had made the right decision taking on this obligation. We were all made better by our involvement.

So why am I making you aware of this? Yes, it’s another appeal in a way, but one that will NOT put a dent in your wallet. While we have an ade-quate number of members, we have found ourselves in a situation where, as with most groups, some members assumed the bulk of the work. While many of our initial group remain active; we have lost some and recruited others. But there is always the need for more volunteers, so we can assure that our work can continue. We would love to recruit a greater number of men and women, and I hope the description of our first experience will inspire others to join.

Do not be afraid of taking on this Mitzvah. It is truly awesome (in the spiritual sense) and you will become immersed in the brotherhood and sisterhood that we have created. If you are intrigued and would like to get involved, please call Rabbi Knopf (804-355-3564 ext. 100) or Bette Webne (804-270-3430) at any time. They will speak with you and explain the process. We will then contact you to teach you the ancient ritual of Taha-ra so that we can truly honor our dead as Jewish law prescribes.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please say YES.
