I’ve had a couple of interesting and very welcome breaks in sunny climes

in March during which time, two of our lunch meetings have been in the capable hands of our Vice President, Grant and our President Elect, Keith respectively. My thanks go to both of them for allowing our Secretary to cajole and steer them in the right direction; where would we all be without Julia? It’s strange to relate that during these breaks, even though I was physically separated from our club by some many, many miles, I could still feel the gentle tug of my leg being pulled during our lunch meetings.

The twice-yearly lily pond clearing in the grounds of Whirlowbrook Hall together with U3A, and our twice-yearly canal clean-up at Tinsley Marina have received their usual attention to detail with both of these projects now really benefitting from the results of our actions; a half-cleared pond and much less litter. Our Environment Committee Chairman, Trevor and our Roving Eye, Sheps were the organisers. It’s a real pleasure to see that Trevor is continuing to stamp his name on our environment projects but none of this can happen without with the support he encourages and receives from our willing members. Thank you, Trevor and all who took part.

While Grant’s quiz team did not, unfortunately, succeed in winning in the District 1220 quiz, it’s a very great pleasure to report that Lydia, one of our entrants in the District 1220 Young Musician competition has succeeded in gaining a place in the regional final. Let’s wish her every success at Loughborough in April in the hope that she gains a place in the national finals in Cardiff. Good luck, Lydia.

The crocus heart in Millhouses Park has not flowered as much as was hoped during March, mainly due to the inevitable trampling that this area receives, this, in spite of the protection erected around it before they’re due to flower. The crocus heart was planted by our club to highlight Rotary’s campaign to eliminate polio.

However, on a more positive note, Tiptree Jam has donated jars of greengage jam to all Rotarians in GB and Ireland to support our Purple4Polio campaign in the hope that £1,000,000 can be raised nationally to donate to the campaign. I hope we can all do our bit to support this aim by filling the emptied jars with cash. Dorothy’s sterling efforts will thus bring a smile to her face. I’m sure that she does not want the jars returning, just your money will do.

The fund raising initiative from the

International Committee - which we

can all easily support!!!

The A.G.'s Column .This past month has been spent preparing

for the next Rotary Year. All Club Presidents

were invited to Mansfield for their first

training session which is called PEPS -

Presidents Elect Preparation Seminar. Apart

from a short address by our District

Governor Elect, Michael Longdon, I was left

to my own devices to train up the Presidents

Elect in the Peak Group. I am pleased to say

it went ok. Keith was not there, so he has

had a special session with me at home.

Now I am preparing for the second

training session that takes place at the

District Assembly, but this time I have a crib

sheet that all the AGs must use. (It is in fact a

computer based presentation and my

computer guru, John Deal, will make sure I

know what I am doing before I go to the

Assembly.) District 1220 do give their

Presidents Elect good training, something

sadly lacking in 1270.

My next task is to attend Club Assemblies

hopefully before the start of the new Rotary

Year. (David Hood is coming to represent the

District Governor at our own Club Assembly

on 17th May. I am debarred from doing my

own Club's Assembly)

I have

recently

circulated a

round robin

about the

District Conference being held at the end of

September. I do hope we can get up a party

to go to it in Llandudno. All the North

Derbyshire Rotarians tell me Llandudno is

their best conference venue.

One other date you might like to note is

Sunday 2nd July when we have the District

Handover Lunch at the Derbyshire Hotel (M1

junction 28 - my new alternative home!) Five

of us attended the Paul Harris Fellows lunch

there recently and it was very good. I receive

my "gong of office" at this lunch, but I will be

rushing back as it is the last night of Music in

the Gardens.

It's all go! Alex.

Our Chairman of the Environmental Committee reports:

On Wednesday 8th March a group of us worked alongside U3A clearing silt and unwanted vegetation along the edge of the lily pond in Whirlow Hall park. The weather was good and we made excellent progress and there was some good banter over coffee and cake. It was nice to have Derek Cave visit to check that we weren't slacking.

Below: Derek with one of the U3A

workers

Above: Abbeydale members John Rogerson and ‘Sheps’, David Shepherd,

enjoying the challenge!

Hope these aren’t all repeats, but we’re all getting to that forgetful age… and they’re worth retelling anyway!! Chris Kenyon explains how to…..

Maintain a healthy level of insanity as you get older…

1.At lunch time, sit in your parked car with sunglasses on, point a hair dryer at passing cars ...and watch them slow down!

2.On all your cheque stubs, write, 'For Marijuana'!

3.Skip down the street rather than walk, (if you can!), and see how many looks you get.

4.With a serious face, order a Diet Water whenever you go out to eat.

5.Sing along at the Opera.

6.When the money comes out of the ATM, scream 'I Won! I Won!'

7 When leaving the Zoo, start running to-wards the car park, yelling, 'Run For Your Lives! They're loose!'

8.Tell your children over dinner, 'Due to the economy, we are going to have to let one of

you go....

MUSIC IN THE

GARDENS 2017

Around the time this

magazine is published, Music in the

Gardens, 2017, will have been formally

launched on Radio Sheffield. This will be

the 13th year of what is now the biggest

event run by Rotarians in the U.K.

Many thousands of pounds have been

raised for charities - local, national and

international - over the past 12 years and

we should all feel proud of our achieve-

ments. Whist up to 15 local Clubs

contribute in some small way through

stewarding etc., it is the four main Clubs

of Abbeydale, Rotherham Sitwell,

Sheffield and Wortley who take on the

bulk of the workload and responsibility in

planning and running the four-day event.

Rotarians can acquire tickets through me

at face value - through SIV and there is a

cover charge!

MOST IMPORTANTLY - HAVE YOU GOT

THE DATES IN YOUR DIARY. DAVID Q.

WILL SHORTLY BE SEEKING STEWARDS

FOR THE FOUR NIGHTS. Alex.

Clinic in Kiryabutuzi, Uganda The official opening of the clinic was 9 March 2017.

Abbeydale Rotary Club has sent a cheque for £10,216 to Maternity Worldwide this month which will be used to fund the running costs for about three

months. This was always Plan B.

We had to abandon our application to Rotary Foundation for a Global Grant project in January when it became clear District 9211 would not authorise our

application in time.

I am disappointed but at the same time I am very proud that your generosity and support means we can contribute to saving lives of mothers and babies

in this rural community in Uganda.

Thank you all so very much.

I want to acknowledge the donations from Inner Wheel, RC Richmond North Yorkshire and RC Drone Valley amounting to £1728. RC Hoima-Kitara in

Uganda have committed $500 which they will donate direct to MWW.

I also want to thank Chris Kenyon, Graham Taylor and Nigel Thomas for

their invaluable work as members of the project team.

We have retained £1700 because we are applying to District 1220 for a District Foundation Grant of £1000 to fund bicycles for outreach

antenatal work from the clinic.

BEEF FILLET WITH A GRATIN OF

WILD MUSHROOM— serves 4

One of my favourite dinner party

main courses, courtesy of Gordon

Ramsey.

A tip from the boss (GR), buy a whole fillet circa 600grms.

Trim off the ends and any sinews wrap tightly in cling

film and store in the fridge overnight to give perfect

round steaks. then cut into 40/50mm thick roundels.

Ingredients

1 shallot, finely chopped

1 fat garlic clove, crushed

4 tablespoons of olive oil

100g wild mushrooms (such as ceps, girolles, blewits,

morels) trimmed and finely chopped

100g chestnut mushrooms, chopped. If you cannot

obtain the above don’t worry just obtain a mix of

mushrooms; I have and it’s nearly as good.

2 tablespoons of white wine

1 tablespoon each of finely chopped parsley, chervil and

chives

4 tablespoons of double cream

1 large egg yolk

4 steaks as described above

2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese (optional in our

house, she who must be obeyed does not like it)

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Prepare the topping ahead. Gently sauté the shallots and

garlic in 1 tablespoon of olive oil for about 5

minutes until nicely softened.

Add a further 2 tablespoons of olive oil and sauté the

mushrooms over a high heat, stirring frequently for

about 7 minutes until browned and cooked. Add

the wine and cook until it has reduced away. The

mixture should be quite dry. If necessary, tip it into

a sieve to drain off any remaining liquid. Transfer

the mushrooms to a bowl, season and mix in the

herbs. Allow to cool.

Whip the cream until softly stiff, and then fold into the

mushrooms along with the egg yolk. Cover and

chill.

Brush the steaks with the remaining tablespoon of olive

oil and season them. Heat a large non-stick frying

pan until you can feel a strong heat rising. Cook the

steaks for about 2-3 minutes, turning them to sear

all over.

Remove from the pan, season and allow to cool.

As the weather improves many Rotarians will be spending more time out on the golf course…. Stephen Ware

thought you golfers would appreciate this little tale!

A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of pounds for a meal.

The man took out his wallet, extracted ten pounds and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man answered"

Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.

The homeless man replied, "Are you NUTS! I haven't played golf in 20 years!"

"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?

The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking and golf."

Ray’s Recipes Ray’s Recipes Ray’s Recipes …...…...…... When ready to serve, heat the oven to 2000C fan

(2200C), Gas 7. Put the steaks on a shallow baking

tray. Pile the mushroom mixture on top and dust

with Parmesan. Cook, uncovered, for about 5-7

minutes until the topping is bubbling and golden.

Serve as soon as possible, with roasted or sautéed

potatoes and a salad.
