2014 Women´s World Championship Qualific. Group I

Press Release

T&T set to host Second Round Women qualifiers

ST AUGUSTINE, Trinidad: T&T “Calypso

Spikers”, the four-time reigning

Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association

(CAZOVA) will play host to the second of

six Second Round NORCECA qualifiers,

Group I, to next year’s FIVB Women’s

World Championship in Italy at the

University of the West Indies Sports and

Physical Educational Center (UWI SPEC)

from Saturday May 25 to Sunday May 26

from 9am daily.

In addition to the host country, which is

ranked seventh in NORCECA, the highest

ever by a Caribbean men or women’s

team, the three other teams in the

group are six-time CAZOVA champions

and NORCECA 13th

ranked Barbados,

18th

ranked Honduras and Anguilla,

rated 22nd.

The four teams will first compete in a

round-robin series at the end of which

the top two will qualify for the Third

Round of the FIVB World Championship

as well as the tournament gold medal

match.

The two other teams in the group will

play for third with the winner still in with

a chance to advance to the Third Round

of World qualifiers.

However, it will only do so as the best

third placed team of all the six Second

Round qualifying groups based on their

NORCECA ranking at the end of January

2014.

For this qualifying group, host T&T, which

is unbeaten against all Caribbean rivals

and other teams outside the top nine in

NORCECA for the past six years will start

as favourites to qualify as the top team

from the group based on their

impeccable record.

Barbados will also fancy its chances of

joining the “Calypso Spikers” as Third

Round qualifiers ahead of the little

known Anguillans and Central Americans,

Honduras.

Last year in its first round qualifying

Group A series held in Suriname, T&T led

by captain and eventual “Most Valuable

Player” of the tournament, Poland-based

Press Release

Krystle Esdelle powered past Guadeloupe

25-6, 25-14, 25-13 to claim the gold

medal in Paramaribo.

This after T&T swept past Bahamas 25-

20, 25-15, 21-25, 25-15; Guadeloupe 25-

17, 25-14, 25-13 and Suriname 25-19, 21-

25, 25-17, 25-6 in their round-robin

matches.

The Barbadians, meanwhile were second

to host Jamaica in their Group E series

played in Kingston after going under to

the host, 14-25, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25 in

the decider.

Barbados had earlier ended in second

spot to the Jamaicans in the round-robin

series by beating Aruba 25-10, 25-15, 25-

7 and Cayman Islands, 25-11, 25-8, 25-6

while losing to the “Reggae Spikers” 21-

25, 19-25, 25-18, 17-25.

Anguilla, like, Barbados was second in its

qualifying series, Group D, suffering an

11-25, 18-25, 12-25 loss against hosts St

Kitts/Nevis in their championship match.

In the round-robin matches, Anguilla

stopped Bermuda 25-21, 25-15, 25-18

and Dutch St Maarten 26-24, 25-18, 25-

11, but was beaten by St Kitts/Nevis, 18-

25, 19-25,12-25.

Honduras was third in Group G after

tasting defeat in its two round-robin

encounters, 14-25, 15-25,16-25 versus

Nicaragua and 22-25, 28-26, 13-25, 10-25

against Guatemala.

On Saturday, regional rivals, T&T and

Barbados will meet in the opening match

from 9am followed by Anguilla against

Honduras two hours later.

In Saturday’s second session, from 5pm,

Anguilla faces Barbados while T&T and Honduras will close out the first day of

competition from 7pm.

Sunday, the round-robin series will

conclude with T&T again playing the

opening match, from 9am versus Anguilla

while Barbados meets Honduras at

11am, at the end of which the top two

meet at 8pm in the gold medal contest,

having already booked their third round

places.

Prior to the tournament’s showpiece, the

third and fourth placed round-robin

finishers will play for third.
