CATHOLIC CHARITIES—A NEW VISION

Father Thomas Whittingham is a big man with a

big job. Ordained just three and a half years ago,

he is pastor at Saint Katharine Drexel Parish in

Chester. It is a post that requires every one of his

considerable assets, including his youthful energy,

graduate degree and his commanding 6’5”

physical presence.

Many people can still remember when Chester was

a vibrant Catholic community with many parishes,

schools and even its own Archdiocesan high

school, St. James. The vacant building is still

visible from Father Whittingham’s window.

Across the street, a former mansion is a recovery

center.

Most of Chester is in need of recovery, including

the Catholic Church. Where once there were

several parishes, there is now Saint Katharine

Drexel, a parish so sprawling that it requires

Father Whittingham to drive three exits on I-95 to

get from one end to the other. It’s the Catholic

center of gravity in Chester, performing what ar

essentially missionary works of mercy and

evangelization.

It is easy to look at Chester and lose hope. And

many of its residents have. But with the relentless

optimism of people like Father Whittingham, nuns

such as the Sisters of Saint Francis and

Missionaries of Charity, who have lovingly been

here for decades and the countless dedicated

volunteers, there can be hope.

An important part of that hope is the generosity of

people like you show to the Catholic Charities

Appeal. It helps provide not only food, clothing,

shelter and training, but it is also the best kind of

evangelization—the kind that doesn’t merely

preach the Gospel, but lives it.

Please be as generous as you can with your gift to

the 2016 Catholic Charities Appeal.

MONTHLY FOOD DRIVE

The regular monthly

collection of NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS for the needy

of Chester County will take place this

weekend of March 5th & 6th. Please leave

your donations in the bins in the vestibule.

Your generous contributions of food are

greatly appreciated.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE EXTRAORDINARY

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

Join us for an evening of discussion

about what’s so “extraordinary”

about the Extraordinary Jubilee of

Mercy and how we can respond to the graces

God is offering us. The program will be held

here at St. Max on Tuesday, March 15th at 7:00 pm in the church. The speaker will be Meghan

Cokeley, Director of the Office for the New

Evangelization for the Archdiocese of

Philadelphia. She is a Ph.D candidate in theology

and is responsible for planning and coordinating

our Archdiocesan observance of the Jubilee Year

of Mercy. More information to follow. CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to our

Candidates who received the

Sacrament of Confirmation

this Saturday, March 5th at 10

AM and 1:30 PM. Bishop John J. McIntyre

administered the Rite of Confirmation to our 123

young candidates! The Confirmation masses

were concelebrated by Monsignor Carroll, Fr.

Capizzi, and Fr. Gardner, with the assistance of

Deacon Hickey and Deacon Ames. Our heartfelt

thanks go to Ms. Sara Topper, and the music

ministry for the beautiful music accompanying

our liturgy! We also extend our appreciation to

those who helped prepare the children: their

parents and our catechists and teachers: Mrs.

Connolly, Mrs. Crandall, Mrs. Evangelista, Mrs.

Keg, Mr. Regan, Mrs. Spears, Mrs. Tyndall, Ms.

Welsh, and our principal, Mrs. Malseed. Finally,

we would gratefully like to acknowledge all those

ministers who generously served as Ushers,

Eucharistic Ministers and Altar Servers! The

combined effort of all allowed for two beautiful

sacramental celebrations! May the gifts of the

Holy Spirit be lived faithfully by all!

Roberta Dainton

Director of Religious Education

The Parish would also like to extend its thank to

Mrs. Dainton for her planning, preparing, and

leading this sacramental event.

BAPTISMS AND LETTERS OF

ELIGIBILITY TO ACT AS A SPONSOR

OR GODPARENT

Anyone wishing to make arrangements for

the sacrament of Baptism or to obtain a

Letter of Eligibility to witness to the

Catholic Faith as a godparent for Baptism

or sponsor for Confirmation is asked to call

the rectory at 610-399-6936.

Canonical requirements of the Universal

Church to be eligible as a godparent or

sponsor include the following:

1. Reception of the Sacraments of Initiation

(Baptism, Confirmation and Holy

Eucharist).

2. Being at least 16 years of age.

3. If married, marriage must have been

witnessed by a Catholic priest or with

permission from the Catholic Church.

4. Giving witness to the Catholic Faith by

living the Gospel and participating

regularly (weekly) in the Eucharist.

5. Desiring to support the person being

baptized or confirmed in his/her growth in

the Catholic Faith and to pray for him/her.

Through our Baptism, we are made One in

Jesus Christ and members of His Body, the

Church, sharing in Christ’s mission of

Salvation. All of us must grow in this gift.

Our practice of the Faith helps us in this

endeavor and enlightens others, especially

those we are called to help, to the joy of

being called disciples of the Lord.

OPERATION EASTER OUTFITS

Please join us in supporting Partners in Outreach

for Operation Easter Outfit which provides NEW

or LIKE NEW Easter clothing for children in the

West Chester and Coatesville areas. Families in

Action/Kids in Action will be collecting BOYS’

clothing again this year. An outfit can include an

appropriate combination of dress shirt, polo shirt,

tie, vest, blazer, khakis, slacks, dress pants, dress

socks or suit. Individual items, including dress

shoes, are also needed. Items can be left in the

marked bins in the Church or Copy Room at the
