Fratelli tutti - New Encyclical
On the conclusion of the recitation of the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis introduced his
new Encyclical Fratelli tutti. "Yesterday I was in Assisi to sign the new encyclical, Fratelli
tutti, on fraternity and social friendship. I offered it to God on the tomb of Saint Francis who
inspired as in the preceding Encyclical Laudato si’."
Fraternity and social friendship are the ways the Pontiff indicates to build a better, more just
and peaceful world, with the contribution of all: people and institutions. With an emphatic
confirmation of a ‘no’ to war and to globalized indifference.

Jacket Racket - Extra information
A message from Theresa Lewchuk & Deborah Johnson, PASS IT ON organizers:
In our last communication to you, we told you that we were now promoting Jacket Racket
and encouraging parishes who were considering a winter coat collection for PASS IT ON now
consider a collection for Jacket Racket. We assumed everyone would be familiar with Jacket
Racket, but based on inquiries received, this is not necessarily the case. So here is some
information about this volunteer organization:
Jacket Racket was started by a retired teacher in the 1980’s, and it has been in operation all
this time. In previous years, Jacket Racket has supplied between 1,000 and 5,000 winter coats
annually to Calgary students. In fact, the reason that the CCSD offered warehouse space to
Jacket Racket is because, according to John Wasch, CCSD’s Director of Catholicity “ We all
value the Jacket Racket and certainly wish for it to continue”. The link to the JR website
is: http://www.jacketracketcalgary.com (where you can see the on-line order form that
schools use to request winter clothing for students and families). The Jacket Racket
campaign runs from Oct 13 – Nov 27. If you would be interested in volunteering, e-mail
Deborah Johnson [email protected] or Theresa Lewchuk [email protected].
During the campaign period, Jacket Racket invites all schools in the Calgary area (CBE, CCSD,
charter schools, private schools, etc.) to place an order for children’s winter clothing by
gender and size, either with specific families in mind or on spec, based on previous years’
experience. Jacket Racket fills the orders and volunteers deliver the orders to the
schools. This year, the CCSD will also be doing some of the deliveries to the CCSD schools.

World Mission Sunday - October 18
Here is a little reminder for you to share about World Mission Sunday with your parishioners
and community:
• Suggested announcement:
October is Missionary Month and the whole world celebrates World Mission Sunday!
This year Pope Francis chose the theme, "Here I am, send me!" It is not only timely,
but necessary, considering the challenges we currently encounter in our lives, in our
church, and in our world. The primary purpose of World Mission Sunday is to unite
Catholics all over the world in prayer and support of the missions. It encourages
prayer and financial assistance for the missionary work of the Catholic Church
throughout the world. This year with the restrictions imposed on churches due to
COVID, the Pontifical Mission Societies is reaching out to you. We have heard of
stories of missionaries who are unable to reach those in their care because of the
distance and the financial difficulties that goes with it, and of others who are faced
with extreme poverty, displacement, hunger and disease on top of the pandemic
within their communities. The missions need your help. There are many ways to give,
from online donations to mass stipends. To donate, visit missionsocieties.ca or click
this link for online donation.

Resources & Events Worth Sharing
1. 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time - NEW Bulletin Shorts, free to use
Mass Readings | Don’t Kill the Messenger. We have another Kingdom of
God/Heaven parable today. It is about being gracious and prepared. Who, in a right
mind, would snub a gracious invitation to a feast? Who, in a right mind, would kill the
messenger? It happened to Jesus. We should not be surprised when it happens to us
in little or big ways. Still, we must announce: “Come to the feast, come to the
Kingdom.” The required wedding garment in this gospel feast reminds us, who live in
this Kingdom of God, to always imagine we wear our baptismal cloths; and, thus,
always remember to act as faithful disciples.
o What Good News will I proclaim this week?
o What good deed will I do?
o Whom will I invite to do some baptism-inspired activity with me?
