BULLETIN Friday 1 December 2017 Term 4 Week 7

“TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR….”

I've just done a quick count and in our kitchen/dining room there

are over a dozen candles.

But these candles aren't the long cheap skinny ones that you buy

from Woolies for those 'oh no' moments. These candles are round

and fat and when they are all on, we are a bigger cause of

global warming than a herd of cows after a feed of baked beans.

In fact, when people come for dinner and ask “what should we

bring?”, I don't suggest a box of Favourites.....I say “bring some sun

glasses and don’t wear anything made out of nylon”.

If a single candle can be seen from 50 km away, then you could

see our place from the moon when they’re all lit up.

Citronella candles make sense and so too the candle that sits

under the fondue thingo, but all the others....every time the

firestorm gets lit I go and check the insurance policy and the fire

blanket in the kitchen.

But I can also understand that there is something spiritual about

candles and that there is an amazing amount of symbolism with

them - the light of the world who has shone a light into the

darkness....letting your light shine so that others can see it....a light

to a path.... But the best symbolism I reckon is in the candles that

adorn an ’Advent wreath.’

This Sunday we light the first candle, to

celebrate and mark the first Sunday in

Advent. Sometimes this candle is called the 'Candle of Hope'.

What a beautiful reminder of the Hope we

have in the coming of the Christ Child

- a hope that is sure and strong and radiates

from the knowledge that God loves us so

much that he sent his only son to be the

light of the world.

Much effort and prayer goes into placing children in class groupings that will

KAURNA LANGUAGE COURSE

Three Immanuel teachers Gail Darby, Marianne Roberts and Charmaine Strictland have just

attended a 4 week Kauna Language Course held at Xavier College. Members of the Gawler

community took advantage of this opportunity to learn more about Kaurna Language and

Culture. The course was facilitated by Kira Bain from Taoundi College. The course consisted of

greetings, birth order names, numbers, days of the week and songs.

Mrs Darby said “The course was a

great opportunity to learn more

about Kaurna Culture and kinship

systems. I thought the course was

informative and fun. It gave a good

insight into the language and also

culture of the Kaurna people. I

would definitely recommend it to

others.”

STEVE’S RIDE FOR SICK KIDS SA

Steve and his team started their bike ride

Saturday 18th November from Mildura and

ended up at St Jakobi Lutheran School in

Lyndoch on Friday 24th November.

Our year 3 students headed there to welcome

them home to the Barossa and congratulate

them on their fundraising efforts for RMH.

FAITH CHALLENGE

On Friday 24 November 34 Immanuel Students

headed to Faith College Tanunda to compete

again other local Lutheran Schools in the annual

Faith Challenge sports day.

Immanuel came third!.

Well done everyone!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SAPSASA CRICKETERS AND

TENNIS PLAYERS.

Three Immanuel year 6/7 boys Kobe, Will and Max competed in the

SAPSASA Cricket carnival last week. The boys played 4 games. On

Monday they lost, on Tuesday and Wednesday they won. They made

it into the final on Thursday, but the bad weather set in and it was

called a draw.

Will as the opening bowler got important wickets early.

Max was a good batsman and got crucial runs.

Kobe was a later bowler to finish off the tail end.

Thanks to Dan the coach!

Well done boys for your efforts!

Two students Maddie (year 4) and William (year 7) were in the

SAPSASA Tennis team carnival last week.

Unfortunately William missed a few games due to ill health.

Maddie was one of the youngest players and had a good week

of single and double games.

Great sporting efforts everyone!

NEWS FORM OUR YEAR 2’S

Our Year 2 classes have been working on a unit of inquiry about living things:

Central Idea:

Ecosystems consist of interdependent organisms

Lines of Inquiry:

How plants grow and change

The ways plants and animals depend on each other to survive

Our responsibility to care for living things

They have been using the concept of connection to examine the way different parts of an ecosystem

work together. Last week they visited Clonlea Park to run some tests and check on the health of the

creek. They carried out tests for salinity, turbidity, pH and temperature, and they made observations on

habitat and plant life, bird and butterfly species, and invertebrates in the creek. Ask them about what

they found out. They will return to carry out further observations in Week 8.

A big thank you to Ms Mansfield, Mrs Butler, Mrs Kroschel and Mrs Darby, who came along and helped

run our investigation stations. Thanks also to Melissa Allery and NRM Education, who provided resources

to help us put these investigations together, and to the Lutheran Laypeople’s League, whose generous

Earthcare grant allowed us to purchase testing equipment.
