Welcome!
It is more than curious that God chose to send the choirs of heaven to a bunch of shepherds
near Bethlehem. Though we tend to romanticize the whole notion of shepherds, they were
really the outcasts of society. This would be similar to God telling those that we consider the
outcasts of society his spectacular plans first. That is so like God. The Lord delights in using the
weak and poor and unknown in life vs. the powerful or the rich or the well connected. Why? So
we don't confuse who is really doing the work. It's the Lord and not us. What an incredible
liberating truth to discover this rich 'insignificance' and to be freed from having to prove
ourselves to the Lord or anyone! Hard to believe? Then the invitation to Come And See is just
what we need.

God of majesty and glory, we are thirsty for your grace.
You made a way for us in the wilderness, and still, in our foolishness, we go astray.
We hide our eyes from your presence and refuse to see the gifts you have laid before us.
We do not listen to your word.
We are lifeless when we ought to dance and speechless when we ought to sing.
Forgive us, O Lord.
Open our ears, so like the shepherds, we may hear the good news as we seek to follow your holy way.
Now, hear me, as in silence I confess to you my personal sins...

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Welcome to Worship!

Some sources credit the creation of the Advent Wreath to
Vikings converted to Christianity. Trapped by long harsh winters,
they looked upon evergreens with awe for here was a plant
that even winter could not stop. They took
limbs from evergreens and
shaped them into wheel-like
decorations, the first symbol used to mark
the season anticipating Christmas.
This year, we welcome families of youth and children that are involved in leadership teams at
RPC to light the Advent Wreath.
Teams represented today are the F2,
Middle School, and High School
leadership teams.

Our New Testament Bible story this
morning is about baby Jesus being
born. The shepherds were so excited to
hear this news because they knew he was the Savior and they rushed to Bethlehem to see
him. Once they saw him, they went out
and shared the news of Jesus’ birth with everyone. How can
you be like the shepherds and share
the good news of Jesus with others?
The Chrismon Tree in the Narthex has
many symbols that reflect Christ’s life.
See if you can locate the Butterfly.
It symbolizes the wonderful truth that
the purpose of Jesus’ coming, his death
and resurrection was to give life (John
10:10). The butterfly is an emblem of a
new creation and a sign of unspeakable
JOY.

Since 1998, members and friends of Roswell Presbyterian Church have honored loved ones at this time of year by making special gifts
to RPC’s Children’s Christmas Fund. The fund provides financial gifts to our Mission Partners and others, locally and around the world,
to express the love and joy of Christ to children.
Your gifts of $10,452.15 to date have been combined with this year’s income from an endowment established in 1998 by RPC members.

Each month, we welcome a new group of members into the Roswell Presbyterian Church faith family. Becoming a member
involves two steps: 1) attending the Exploring RPC class and 2) being part of Membership Sunday. We would be delighted if you chose to
make Roswell Presbyterian your church home.
If you want to learn more or are ready to become a member, please complete this form, place it in the offering plate
during worship and plan to attend Exploring RPC in January 2017.

Exploring RPC Class Information
Join us for this class designed to help you get to know new people at RPC, learn more about church programs, and discover places to
worship, pray, give, study, and serve. Class will be held in Alderman Hall on Sunday, January 8, 9:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. and includes worship
time at 8:15 a.m. in the Historic Sanctuary and complimentary lunch. (Reservations are requested for the classes by/before noon on

Membership Sunday – January 22
We invite you to join in the fellowship of RPC by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior or by renewing your commitment to
Christ in a new church home. On this Sunday, we gather for a family-friendly breakfast in Alderman Hall and then transition into the official
meeting of the Session to welcome new members. New members may join by Profession of Faith, Reaffirmation of Faith, or Transfer of
Letter. Advance reservations are requested. Contact Stephanie Jacobs, Director of New Member Connections, 770-649-4522.
