CATHOLIC CHARITIES 2015 The Catholic Charities Appeal is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s single most important fundraising initiative. The 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal: GIVING HOPE continues to build on last year’s success and reach out to the entire Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. In 2014, Catholic Charities Appeal was blessed to achieve 100% of our $10 million

goal. That means we were able to make substantial distributions to services and charitable entities that depend on us—and on you. Your ongoing support in 2015 is essential to the continued success of these vital missions. Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting some of the organizations that your generosity supports. Thank you for all you do to help those most in need. Skilled Care for Retired and Sick Priests—Many elderly priests who have given their lives in service to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia now have health issues, physical disabilities and are in need of care and support. In 2014, the Catholic Charities Appeal provided $1.3 million of support. Mission Parishes—Some parishes in underserved areas of the Archdiocese cannot provide vital programs such as food banks, family assistance, health services and senior services. The church must remain in these areas where need is often the greatest. As their main benefactor, the Catholic Charities Appeal has been able to support them in 2014 with $1 million.

BASICS OF THE FAITH

Join us for our next session on Sunday, March 1, 2015, from 8:45 to 10:15 am in the Maximilian Room (Rectory side entrance). Our topic will be The Third Commandment: Love The Lord’s Day. Has the sacred nature of Sunday been lost in our culture? Has it become just another Saturday, as Fr. Barron suggests? What can we do about it? Come join the discussion. The session will include a PowerPoint presentation and time for questions. Coffee, tea, and cake will be provided. To be added to our mailing list for information on upcoming sessions, contact Anne Chavez at [email protected]. Outlines and narrated PowerPoints of previous sessions are available at www.basicsofthefaith.org by clicking Basics of the Faith. This is an ongoing monthly series; you’re welcome to attend any individual session. No prior knowledge or preparation is needed.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND OTHER ACTS OF

PENANCE FOR LENT The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world.

SPRING CLEANING—INSIDE AND OUT Spring is just around the corner. And with spring comes spring cleaning. Not just with our houses, but with our souls as well. As we begin the season of Lent, it is a time to remember that we have not always acted in a Christ-like manner. Because of this, we need to ask for forgiveness. So, if you are heading to the market to pick up some cleaning supplies, you may want to take this list with you.

With spring cleaning, we get our lives out of the MOTH BALLS of winter and roll up our sleeves, put on our GLOVES and start dusting with our HANDI-WIPES. But we cannot forget the SPONGE to soak up God’s graces.

The time of Lent is a new ERA. We change the old self to a new and better self. Jesus wants to be our friend, but we have to send Him our SOS (Save Our Souls). He hears us and if we are truly sorry, we GAIN everlasting JOY.

Some of the sins that we have are small (venial sins) and they only require a little SOFT SCRUB. But there are some sins that we commit that are really serious (mortal sins). These are the things we know are wrong, we think about them, and then act upon them anyway. These require something a little stronger, like SCRUBBING BUBBLES.

So let us RESOLVE to seek out God’s forgiveness and PLEDGE to do better than yesterday and even better tomorrow. And now for the big FINISH. All of this is a CINCH, because we have the MAGIC ERASER—the Sacrament of Reconciliation! Who makes the Magic Eraser? MR. CLEAN. Who is our Mr. Clean? Yes—Jesus!
