Would you please set in motion arrangements for me to transfer to the LC Ingleburn
District 201N2. Syd transferred here twelve months ago and I've been helping at most
of their projects, so I guess it makes sense to join them.
Words can never express the thanks I have for Lionsonoz, they were there for me
when I had hit rock bottom where Lions was concerned. Without this wonderful club, I
would have walked away from what is really an integral part of my life.
Gwyneth, please, pass on my very, very sincere appreciation to all members of
Lionsonoz for having made me regain my faith Lions; it has been wonderful meeting so
many more "family" members, and I look forward to catching up with you at future MD
Conventions.
Warmest wishes,
Trish

MEMBERSHIP REPORT – NOVEMBER 2016 We have an enquiry from a Lions Club who had person interested in joining Lions who would be in that town for about 7 month or more and who then wished to continue travelling. The query was basically to gain further information about Australian Lionsonoz so that they could pass this on to the prospective new Lion. Having some background information from our Cab Secretary already they had decided that it would be better for the prospective Lion to join
their Lions Club initially so that they could be supported. We certainly agreed with this approach and provided them with the additional information they requested. We are pleased to welcome newly transferred member Lion Brian Bourke to our Lions Club we hope that he enjoys his travels and our unique Lions Club. Please! Remember to wear your lapel pin every day! Have a Safe and Happy Christmas with family and friends!
Regards
Lion Stewart Payne

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - NOVEMBER 2016
10
Well, we start this report with our trip to Taree for the Convention. What a fantastic weekend.
Absolutely great to see some more faces of Lionsonoz. It was also great to see so many of our
club at the Convention. I have had many Lions expressing just how impressed they are with our
turnout at Conventions. We are usually one of the largest contingents there. I won’t go into what
we all attended and which speakers and entertainers kept us amused, as it has already been
covered in other reports. Enough to say that all were exceptional and we enjoyed it immensely.
It was also very pleasing to induct Lion Denise Clarke into the Club on the weekend. Good
decision Lion Denise, welcome to Lionsonoz and have a very merry time with us.
While we are on membership, it was also our pleasure to accept Lion Brian Bourke of the Lions
Club of Manning River, as a Transfer in to our club at the last meeting. Welcome also Lion
Brian. I am anticipating a most enjoyable pre-christmas weekend at the Taylors Arm ”Pub With
No Beer” which I know you are attending.
As it has just been mentioned, I have put it to the club that Jan and I are going to the Pub with
no Beer for a camping weekend, on the Reserve opposite, as a warm up for Christmas. Some
of you have indicated that you are attending also. It should be a great weekend especially now
that Brian is attending – lots of fun for everyone.
Following on from the Taree Convention, Jan and I headed off home to Freddo where we have
been ever since. Upon arriving home, we immediately contacted the builder who was repairing
our house and finally got the job finished. This is one builder I will not recommend to anyone.
As this is the last report before Christmas, I would like to wish each and every one of you a very
merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Yours in Lionism
President Lion Bernie

KNITTING REPORT – October, 2016
I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very
Merry Christmas
12
And
The best new year possible with good
health and many happy days……..
Look forward with optimism to the year
which lies before us.
The seasons have come and gone pretty quickly this year. Maybe because things
have been more hectic than usual, maybe it’s because we are getting older.
What a wonderful time we all had in Taree, meeting up with members from
Australian Lionsonoz for the first time and sharing stories with longer term
Lions.
What a surprise I got when Rhonda Courtney arrived at Happy Hour with her
bags of knitting. Some of the Teddies have already found nice homes with little
children loving them. Thank you so much Rhonda you contribution to my
knitting cupboard is very much appreciated.
Sandra Philippzip did very well with her first time Teddies and I believe she is
doing extremely well.
I was approached by a Woolgoolga Lion the other day letting me know that she
has been making beanies and mittens for Father Riley’s “Kids off the Streets”
Thanks to all who have assisted me during the first part of this Lions Year.

FISHING REPORT – NOVEMBER 2016
Fishing Woes
The sport of fishing is not all beer and skittles as some of the TV shows lead us to believe.
Take for example one of my regular fishing trips this month.
On arriving at Keepit Dam, I decided not to use the launching ramp but to launch my “tinnie”
from the banks, near the Sailing Club.
That was alright as the Dam is now 99% full and the launching was quite easy. I headed for my
favourite fishing spot only to find that the tree I normally tie up to at the start of my excursions
13
was completely under water, so I found other trees still visible to try and if no joy, to move on
to another spot. I caught 2 nice Yellowbellies and when that spot petered out I kept on moving.
About 4 pm I headed for my favourite spot again to try and find a branch of my favourite tree I
could tie up to.
I found it all right. I ran right over the top of it. Luckily I was going dead slow otherwise it
could have capsized me as the four thick branches were only a couple of millimetres below the
surface of the water. I got stuck!
Suddenly I was perched on top of 3 of the branches with no way to get off. The propeller could
not reach the water and try as I might to rock the boat or to push and pull using the remaining
branch, I was stuck!
After an age (possibly 20 or 30 minutes) I was ready to give up and resign myself to spending a
night in the boat, when a power boat came into view and I was able to convince him I was in
trouble so he threw me a rope and he towed me off the snag. End of drama No. 1.
On reaching the shore where my car parked I was horrified to discover I had left the parking
lights on for the past 6 hours and my battery was dead flat. No problem, I thought. I pulled out
my battery booster from the boot, attached it to the battery and turned the key….nothing! I had
forgotten to charge it up this month, hadn’t I?
I used my mobile phone to call the entrance office, asking if there was someone there that could
help me. No! All the staff were at a meeting somewhere, not at the dam and it was almost knock
off time anyway. The lass said she would ask the next car that came to try to help me. In the
meantime I was in another spot of bother. I badly wanted to use the toilet and the amenities
block was a good 500 yards away and to top that I had been having a bout of gout so walking
was quite painful. However I just had to make the “journey”. So I hobbled along on the rough
ground and made it, just in time.
On my painful way back, a car came along so I hailed it and the guy offered to take me back to
my car and assist with a jump start. However when getting there he informed me he did not
have jumper leads and of course I relied on my booster so I had none as well.
We unhooked the boat trailer and he towed me all over the place to clutch start the car but the
battery was so flat, this just didn’t work.
Another car came along with jumper leads but they were so tiny and thin that they would not
be capable of doing the job at all. So off he went. In the meantime I rang NRMA who said they
would send someone out from Gunnedah to assist.
While waiting, a man came by on a pushbike who offered to help so he rode back to his
camping spot and brought his car back with a gadget that I did not know existed. A personal
power pack which was about the size of a block of chocolate. This will never work I thought.
He hooked it up and the car started better than it has ever done. (I will have to get one of these I
thought). I offered him one of my fish for his trouble, but he declined the offer saying he had no
way of cleaning or filleting it.
I then contacted the NRMA and was lucky enough to catch the mechanic before he left
Gunnedah so I then went to the cleaning table to clean the fish. I won’t tell you about the
Hungarian who pulled up just as I was about to start the cleaning process and held me up for a
further half an hour while we swopped fishing stories.
14
After cleaning and filleting the fish and cleaning the boat (all this lengthy time with the motor
running) I searched the camping area until I found my Good Samaritan and gave him the
bigger of the two fish, Filleted, to repay him for his help.
So there you are, an exciting day with only one fish to show for it.
Lion Warren
……… Of all times, I forgot to take any photos.
Fishing News Update (2015)
It was the Friday night a week before Christmas 2015.
“Do you really want to go to the Kootingal Bowling
Club for their raffles and members draw?” I said “I
would rather go fishing”.
So there I was fishing away without getting a bite. At
7pm it was quite light but I had had enough so I
reeled my line in and when the bait, of live shrimp,
was about 6inches under the surface a 40cm
Yellowbelly grabbed it. My only fish.
I was quite happy with it until I received a phone call
the next morning to gaily tell me that if we had been
at the Club I would have heard my membership
number come out and we would have walked off
with $1,300.
It was a most expensive fish! (Tasted good on the
barbie though)

ED: It looks like this article got lost last Christmas. I am
sure I haven’t included it before. Enjoy
Fishing News
It is December and the Cod fishing season is now in full
swing. No Murray Cod can be taken between 30th
September and 1st December each year, except in
Copeton Dam where there is no closed season.
I tried my luck for Cod last week but was not at the
right spot at the right time. However I had a lot of fun
with some really big European Carp.
A very expensive Yellowbelly
15
It has been some time since I have caught Carp in Keepit Dam but this time they seemed to be
fired up. This one came home with me to be used as garden fertiliser and bait for my Shrimp
traps.
The Carp have been misaligned by most Australians as being rubbish fish but the European and
Asian migrants love them. I have eaten one. They are similar to Paul Hogan’s Witchetty Grubs
“You can eat them but they taste like s^%#t”. Not really, they are a bit bland but if treated with
a few herbs and spices they could be quite acceptable. You have to watch out for the myriad of
forked bones.
I am waiting with trepidation for the authorities to release the Carp virus into our waterways.
Can you imagine hundreds of tons of fish like this rotting around rivers and dams? It will be a
health hazard for months, but what a benefit to fishing if we can rid our waters of this pest.
They are great fun to catch.
Off to the coast next week to have a go at the Flathead and Bream.

Australian Lionsonoz in Action
Australian Lionsonoz Club member,
Lion John Matheson lives in an over
50’s Lifestyle Resort in the suburb of
Eagleby, Brisbane, which has about
660 residents. This year he has sold 40
x 1.5kg cakes and 15 x 900gm
puddings, which he delivered to the
residents. He had put an order sheet
up in both club houses for the cakes
and puddings for about six weeks
prior to delivery, letting the residents
know when he would be delivering
them.
As the Australian Lionsonoz Club
does not have any fundraising
facilities, Lion John sells the Lions
Christmas Cakes and Puddings on
behalf of the Lions Club of Ormeau Inc.,
which is close to where he lives.
Lion John’s “profit” is the hours he can
claim, assisting a main stream Lions Club.
Next year he is going to try something
different if the Craft Ladies will let him.
Around the end of November each year the village Ladies Craft Group have an
annual market day where all groups within the village can sell anything that they
make, nothing can be brought in that is not made in the village and there are some
very talented people living in there, from woodwork, painting, sewing, quilting,
card making, jewellery etc.
He is going to ask them if they can forego the cost of having a stall, and bringing
goods in that are not made here, so that he can sell the cakes and puddings, it is
assumed he could increase his sales by a fair amount by doing this.

Lion John is pictured here delivering
Lions cakes and puddings to the
residents using his golf buggy as a
“Christmas sleigh”.

A silent reminder of the dangers of
shopping together.................
Husband Down
A husband and wife are shopping in their local
supermarket.
The husband picks up a case of beer and puts it in
their cart.
"What do you think you're doing?" asks the wife.
"They're on sale, only $20 for 24 cans" he replies.
"Put them back, we can't afford them" demands
the wife.
They carry on shopping.
A few aisles farther on, the woman picks up a $40
jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.
"What do you think you're doing?" asks the
husband.
"It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,"
replies the wife.
Her husband retorts: "So does 24 cans of beer and
it's half the price."
That's him, there in Aisle 5.

Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason
The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to
reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October excited about their opportunities. When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve.
They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on
December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
22
On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm - hit the area and
lasted for two days.
On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw
that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high.
The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do
but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity, so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church.
By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the
opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a
sheet. "Pastor," she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials 'EBG' were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten
"The Tablecloth". The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and she never saw her husband or her home again.
The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; but she made the pastor keep it
for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home. That was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn

on the day for a housecleaning job.
What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost
full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood, continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving.
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it
was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war and how could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her
safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home again in all the 35 years between.
The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They
drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier.
He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment,
knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine.

mysterious ways. (Sent to me via the internet.Ed)
WHY IS IT SO?
1… WHY: ??
Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?
BECAUSE:
When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most
people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left.
Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And
that's where women's buttons have remained since.
2.... WHY:
Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?
BECAUSE:
24
This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced, approximately,
'mayday.'
3.... WHY
Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?
BECAUSE:
In France , where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was
called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'the egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans
(naturally), mispronounced it 'love.'
4.... WHY:
Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?
BECAUSE:
In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using
an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the
kiss eventually became synonymous.
5... WHY:
Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?
BECAUSE:
In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate
whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass
the buck' to the next player.
6… WHY:
Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?
BECAUSE:
In earlier times it used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned
drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount
of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his
host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.
7… WHY:
Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?
BECAUSE:
Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which
produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the Centre of attention.
8... WHY:
Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?
BECAUSE:
Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If
someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.
9… WHY:
In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?
BECAUSE:
When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she
loved the Scots game 'golf.' He had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make
sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military
school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea
in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced ‘ca-day' and the
Scots changed it into caddie.

10… WHY:
Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs?
BECAUSE:
Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people
saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter
misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.
