Across the continent, many ofAustralia’s precious naturalassets are in steep decline:25 native terrestrial mammalshave gone extinct sinceEuropean settlement, givingAustralia the worst rate ofrecent mammal extinctions inthe world. A further 1,700surviving animals and plantsare threatened with extinctionand every year more speciesare being added to this tragiclist. Even our most heavilyprotected natural areas havenot escaped: Kakadu National Park for example has experienced a75% decline in species richness in the last 15 years. This highlights anurgent need for a new approach to conservation in Australia.

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is an independent, non-profitorganisation that is transforming conservation on the ground. AWC isdedicated to saving Australia’s threatened wildlife and habitats. Duringthis presentation you will learn the key factors that are driving thedecline of Australia’s natural assets and about some major newinitiatives that are stopping and reversing the decline of Australia’sbiodiversity.

Zac Lewis is a Development Executive with AWC. Before joining AWC,Zac was a natural resource manager with the Victorian stategovernment, where he gained significant experience in environmentalmanagement and policy. Prior to that, he was an environmentalscientist undertaking a number of research projects across Victoria andNew South Wales.

by Rotary Clubs acrossAustralia. Many Loretoschools, other interestedschool bodies and an array ofinterested donors in Australiahave continued to supportLoreto Program in Vietnam. The Program has alsoreceived support from manycorporate bodies withinVietnam. With Trish’s retirement, the Program will be run by herVietnamese Team.

Trish has no retirement plans as yet.

One remote “kindergarten” she came across was a shack previouslyused for buffalos. LVAP improvements to such conditions typicallyinclude 3 – 4 classrooms for children of kindergarten age, toiletsattached to each classroom, safe electricity systems, each room wellresourced with educational supplies and a kitchen and eating area toensure that the kindergarten children have at least two nutritiousmeals per day.

SUCCESSFUL MICRO CREDIT SCHEMEPosted by Tony THOMASA further example of how fellow clubs are applying Rotary.

Down with kerosene! Go solar electric!

That’s how Melbourne RotaryClub is helping people onTanna Island, Vanuatu to lifttheir living standards andhealth.

The club is financing solarpower there throughcommunity micro-loans.They’ve done this sosuccessfully that Arlington RC,Texas templated the systemfor solar-light conversions in Honduras, involving USD30,000.

Remarkably, the same entrepreneur is behind both the Vanuata andSolomon projects – Stewart Craine, a Sydney-based Australian whofounded Barefoot Power for affordable solar energy in the third world.Stewart on-lends to villagers and handles the repayments. MelbourneRC solar project manager Wolfgang Kissel says Craine initially soughtfunding for African villages, outside Melbourne RC’s reach, but the clubswitched him to Vanuatu where it was already running a school bookproject.

Guest SpeakerHerb Greenwood “Trends in Residential Architecture in Melbourne”Herb has practiced as an architect for over 40 years in Melbourne and China and hasbeen involved in the design of some of the most significant buildings in Melbourne.

Herb observed that inner Melbourne is in the middle of a residential propertyconstruction boom, a shift from the traditional commercial / retail construction in thisarea.

He put this down to increased demand for convenience and ease of travel but also topermissive standards – requirements here are much less onerous than in China.
