BY THE WAY •••

• This year, the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve occur on the same day, Sunday, December 24. Because of this convergence, and to give our staff a little more time to prepare the church for the Christmas liturgies, there will be no 12:00 Noon Mass next Sunday, December 24. In addition there will not be music at the morning Masses next Sunday.

• Today is the deadline for leaving gifts under the Advent Giving Tree. Please leave the gifts unwrapped and with the tag securely affixed to the package so that it goes to the correct location. Thank you to everyone who so generously participates in this outreach year after year. And thank you to the army of elves which makes this outreach possible. They do a lot of moving, sorting, boxing and transporting behind the scenes.

• Father Stephen Prisk, who spent part of his seminary time here with us at Saint Anthony's, is leading a Pilgrimage to Rome, Assisi and Orvieto this coming May 21-29, 2018. The cost is $2,999. For more information, you can pick up a flyer at the rectory, or contact Father Prisk at Saint Joseph's Rectory, Mendham.

• This Friday, December 22, is the 19th anniversary of the death of Monsignor Joseph R. Brestel, P.A. •. Monsignor Brestel served Saint Anthony's fourth pastor in 1966-1978, later serving as Vicar General of the diocese until his death.

• The Christmas Collection is traditionally the largest collection of the year, coming at a time when people have a tradition of being extra generous. Thank you for your generosity to your parish in this, and in every appeal.

• Confessions in preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas are available at the following times: Monday, December 18 3:30-4:30 P.M. and 7:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 20, 9:30-10:30 A.M (with St. Anthony's School) Saturday, December 23 4:30-5:15 P.M.

• Beginning with today, December 17, the mood of Advent shifts as we enter into "late Advent" and the liturgy changes from longing for the coming of the Savior, to actual preparation for Christmas. Beginning with this day, there is a different Preface for the Eucharistic Prayer, and the cycle of Scripture readings leaves the usual pattern and utilizes readings directly connected to the coming of Christ. This change is particularly highlighted with the use of the "0" Antiphons, a series of short verses which begin the singing of the Magnificat at evening Prayer on each of these days. They are called "0" because in the original Latin chant, the first syllable was drawn out for an entire line of music to highlight the anticipation for the Savior. The antiphons begin with "0 Wisdom" on the 17th and end with "0 Emmanuel" on the 23rd• We are all familiar with these antiphons because they comprise the verses of the popular Advent hymn, "0 Come, 0 Come Emmanuel.

• In the sacristy there is a schedule posted for the "Environment Committee." It lists the dates for decorating and un-decorating the church around the holiday season. Based on that schedule, you should see the Nativity Manger in place when you arrive at church today "with Mary and Joseph in place."

Initially, I was not a big fan of this arrangement. I love the Advent Season and I do not like to push Christmas at the expense of Advent. In addition, when it comes to the Christmas Scriptures, I am a little bit of a "biblical literalist" - Mary and Joseph should not show up until the night before. (As a kid, I drove my mother crazy buying extra sheep [19 cents each at Woolworths] each year until we had a "flock" of sheep for our shepherds like it says in the Bible.)

But, on second thought, I think Mary and Joseph just sitting there waiting for the angels and shepherds and wise men, - and for that key figure that should go between them - to show up is a marvelous Advent image. May we all leave some space in our lives this year for the Christ to find his way there over these coming days, and take root in our lives all through the coming year.

God bless you all,

Father Ray

“Albert La Barre Memorial 500 Club”

Back in 2004 the late Al La Barre created the “500 Club” as a way to help pay un-expected maintenance expenses of the parish. All of us who own homes know the feeling of facing a major unforeseen repair. Unfortunately, our annual income does not always allow the luxury of budgeting for unexpected repairs and there-fore, the “500 Club” has assisted in the payment of untimely maintenance. To pay tribute to our former Church Trustee we renamed this worthwhile club the “Albert La Barre Memorial 500 Club” and would be honored if you would think about making a 2017 annual donation of $500.00. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this “stewardship of treasure” opportunity. Please call Cathy Clyne at the rectory with any questions, (973) 427-1478. “500 Club Wish-List” Replace aging kitchen appliances in rectory & convent Repair leaky rectory bathrooms Replace lightbulbs in church to energy-efficient bulbs Upgrade audio in church

FAITH FORMATION

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Reading: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11 Isaiah describes the joy and salvation which will accompany the coming of Christ. He compares the plants which spring from a garden to the justice that will spring from all nations. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 Paul reminds the Thessalonians to constant-ly ready themselves for Christ’s arrival. He tells them to “avoid any semblance of evil” so that they may be found irreproachable when Jesus does arrive. Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28 John explains that he is only a messenger to the people for one more powerful than him-self. John stresses to them that they must make a path for the one so powerful that he is not fit to unfasten the strap of his sandal.

These items will be collected on the weekend of the Epiphany during all Mass-es on Saturday, January 6th and Sunday, January 7th. All items collected will be donated to those in need. Thank you very much for your generosity.
