Luxury Vantage Apartments

I would like to thank all our valued employees, customers and supply partners for your incredible efforts throughout another challenging year. The Perth market remains at historic lows and we have all had to work that much harder to ensure a stable future.

I see great opportunity for BGC. While we are at

the bottom of the building cycle, when the

market slows, strong businesses take the

opportunity to reshape themselves. They drive

the change necessary to be even more

competitive when the market turns. BGC is

grasping this opportunity with both hands.

We’ve sold several businesses and assets

including BGC Contracting, the Westin & Aloft

Hotels and the BGC Centre that now place BGC

in an even stronger financial position. We thank

those who have worked so hard to deliver this

great outcome.

Going forward, our future is focused on our core

– BGC’s vertically integrated building materials

and residential construction business. The goal

is to improve our efficiency and build a stronger

BGC. We are taking advantage of the current

opportunity and we already have runs on the

board including:

• Safety – a renewed focus on safety and

drive to eliminate injuries

• BGC Housing Group – merged J-Corp

and BGC Residential under one roof in

Osborne Park.

• Display Centres – invested in industry

leading Residential Display Centres at

Ventura and BGC Housing Group

• Display Homes – rationalised our display

home portfolio - improving our customer

offering and freeing up capital for

redeployment

• Residential IT – made a multi-million dollar

investment to deliver a single residential IT

system by July 2020.

• CMG and RCG Excos – created forums for

coordinated strategic thinking and

cooperation between construction materials

(CMG) and residential (RCG) business units.

• Continuous Improvement – launched a

program to identify, prioritise, fund and

deliver the multitude of improvement ideas

that exist in the business.

• Winning Share – established new cement

operations in Kalgoorlie (Cement) and a

concrete batching plant in Bassendean

(Concrete) to grow our market share.

Change is hard, but worth it. Activity levels are

up, and workloads have increased as we seek to

drive these improvements. Thank you for your

efforts. Together we have an enormous

opportunity to build a stronger BGC, to delight

our current customers and win new ones. There

is no better time for us to drive change.

Our success is based on ensuring the safety of our people and those we work with; high performance in everything we do; and working to delight our customers.

With the holiday period fast approaching, I wish

you all a safe and happy Christmas and hope you

enjoy some time together with family and

friends. I look forward to seeing you back in

2020, ready for what will be an exciting period

for our company.

Luxury Vantage Apartments completed ahead of schedule

Perth’s luxury residential market has received a further boost in confidence, with the recent completion by BGC Construction of Vantage Apartments in Burswood.

The luxury resort-style destination is set on

the banks of the picturesque Swan River and

boasts state-of-the-art facilities that are

comparative to a 5-star hotel.

The project is a collaboration between

BGC Construction and Edge Visionary Living,

marking it the third time the two companies

have worked together.

With 18 levels and 212 apartments, the

building encapsulates perfectly-designed

amenities including a roof top terrace with

outdoor cinema, infinity pool, fitness centre

and sauna.

BGC Construction Senior Construction Manager Brian Marinovich said the collaboration resulted in a fantastic outcome with the project being completed ahead of schedule.

“I would like to personally thank the team at

BGC Construction, as well as the team at

Edge Visionary Living,” said Brian.

“It’s not always possible to finish projects on

time, let alone ahead of schedule, so I am very

proud of this project.”

Vantage Apartments sets a new standard for

residential apartment developments on the

Burswood Peninsula, with sweeping views of

the Swan River and Perth CBD, and just

moments away from Crown Perth and

BGC Contracting’s Len Buckeridge 2019 Transformation Award winners announced

September saw BGC Contracting announce the winners of the 2019 Len Buckeridge Transformation Award, named in honour of the late Len Buckeridge, founder of the Buckeridge Group of Companies.

The award was presented to Matt

Powell, Lance Jones, Norman Raath

and Chris Matthews from BGC

Contracting’s Mt Webber project,

for improving the safety and

performance of the site’s Ore

Handling Plant (OHP).

The award, inspired by the legacy of Len Buckeridge, recognises people and projects exemplifying BGC’s Vision and Values which make up the BGC CHARTER.

The Mt Webber OHP team identified

12 opportunities to improve safety and

performance across the OHP, with

their solutions to the CV28 Tail Drive

to Head Drive Conversion and the

Lokotrack Spillage Conveyor earning

them the prestigious company award.

Mt Webber Project Manager Clint

Moxham said the Mt Weber OHP

team had gone above and beyond to

prioritise the safety of their colleagues.

“The OHP team’s modifications to the

CV28 conveyor eliminated unwanted

stoppages which posed potential

safety risks to the maintenance team,

and also increased productivity of the

conveyor,” said Clint.

“The award was also attributed to

their innovative solution to improve the

efficiency and maintenance safety of

the Lokotrack Spillage Conveyor,

resulting in a saving of approximately

120 hours per year of 100 per cent

plant downtime.”

Congratulations to the Mt Webber

OHP Team for their outstanding

commitment to the BGC values of

Safety and Teamwork.

BGC Chairman Neil Hamilton was recognised by the Australian Institute of Company Directors WA in October after being awarded the 26th Annual Gold Medal Award.

The award celebrates leaders within the

Western Australian director community

who display excellence in directorship and

make significant contributions to

corporate governance.

Receiving the award at the AICD 2019

Annual Dinner at the prestigious Crown

Towers, Neil Hamilton said the role of

a company director is the ultimate

team sport.

“The chairperson of a board must pull

together a group of disparate people with

different experiences, skill bases,

backgrounds, genders, and ask them to

consider, debate and resolve matters of

great importance to the corporation that

they represent,” said Neil.

“Through fostering a sense of collegiality,

together they can work towards a

collective outcome for the company that is

better than the sum of its parts.

“I believe the greatest contribution that

members of a board can make is the

preparedness to challenge the

conventional norm.

“We must support our up and coming

Directors, as it is often they who ask the

new questions, who have fresh eyes with

the ability to look at a challenge from

different perspectives.

“The BGC Group boasts an incredibly

diverse range of operations and services

and I hope to help lead the company

towards continued success in the coming

years,” said Neil.

BGC is honoured to see Neil Hamilton join the list of many influential and dedicated Western Australian Directors who have received the award.

General Manager TERRACE Paul

Spadanuda said that the partner-

ship between TERRACE and

DevelopmentWA’s East Village

precinct was a perfect pairing.

“At TERRACE, we believe that our

houses give buyers more than just

a home, they support a new way of

living,” said Paul.

“The next generation of Western

Australian buyers are seeking

homes closer to where they work

and play. Our philosophy is that

with good design and clever use of

space, your next home can be

TERRACE partners for WA’s most sustainable new development

TERRACE Innovative housing affordability experiment launches in WA

TERRACE Homes WA has partnered with Mirvac to give one Western Australian family a life-changing opportunity to take part in an innovative housing affordability experiment.

The 12-month experiment aims to

address the challenge of building an

affordable home that is also affordable

to live in for the long term.

As part of the experiment, TERRACE

will construct a $415,000 three-

bedroom, two-bathroom net-zero

energy terrace home at Iluma

Private Estate in Bennett Springs.

The lucky Western Australian family invited to live in the home for 12-months will have rental payments set aside and saved by Mirvac, which can then be used towards a deposit to purchase the home at the end of the experiment.

The home will be built to a 9.1-star

energy rating, taking into account

various energy saving initiatives

including solar passive design and

energy-efficient appliances.

The family’s energy, water use and

lifestyle will be monitored over the

12-month period to better understand

the cost savings that can be achieved

by living in an energy-efficient home.

The successful family will move into the

home in May 2020, when the

12-month study will commence.

BGC No.1BGC retains long-held No.1 WA Builder position

The latest Top 100 rankings from the Housing Industry Association has confirmed BGC has maintained its position as the largest builder in Western Australia.

Announced in the 2018/19 HIA –

Colorbond® Steel Housing 100 Report,

BGC had a total of 2,521 housing

starts between its two separately

managed home groups – BGC Housing

Group and Ventura Home Group.

BGC constructed approximately 50 per

cent more homes for West Australian

families than its nearest competitor.

BGC CEO Daniel Cooper said BGC

made significant preparations to retain

its position as WA’s largest builder.

“The WA housing market has been

challenging, however it has presented

an ideal opportunity to reposition the

business and ensure BGC was well

prepared to leverage the market

upturn,” said Daniel.

“This year, BGC rationalised J Corp and

BGC Residential to form BGC Housing

Group with a focus on the growing

medium-density sector.

“BGC is confident in the future of WA housing and has invested in a multi-million-dollar new headquarters and state-of-the-art display centre at our 67 Walters Drive building.

“This is on top of a planned $50 million

investment in a modern display home

program over the next two years.”

BGC Precast is playing an important role in the upgrade of the Mitchell and Kwinana Freeways, supplying the concrete precast noise-controlling wall panels for these important projects.

The contract commenced in

March this year, with BGC

Precast expecting to deliver

approximately 2,000 panels. The

last of these panels are scheduled

for delivery to Kwinana this month,

with the remaining panels for the

Mitchell Freeway expected early

next year.

BGC Precast Project Manager

Ged Lindsay has utilised the

company’s state-of-the-art battery

mold, which was originally

imported from Italy, to deliver

13km of noise wall panels for

Stage 2 of the NorthLink WA

project. The battery mold delivers

a high-quality product in a time

and cost-efficient production

process.

Ged Lindsay said the project also

utilised the PrefaMAX system to

ensure timely and smooth delivery

of the panels to site.

“We palletise our panels in our

Kwinana premises and then

deliver the pallets using a

PrefaMAX truck and trailer,

which can swiftly offload the

pallets and exit the site

immediately,” said Ged.

“This streamlines the delivery

process and completely eliminates

any risk of extra costs incurred

from longer than expected

unloading times.”

The pallets are unloaded at the

convenience of the installer, with

the empty pallets collected by

BGC Precast at a suitable time.

LEADERS IN FOCUS

Joining a new business is always an exciting and challenging journey. As the new Executive General Manager for Building Products and Group Procurement, I am looking forward to joining the team as we work together as we raise the capability of BGC to make us more competitive, to improve our products and to best position the business to service our clients.

Half of my role will be overseeing the

productivity and capability of the nine

businesses within the building product

group, while the other half will involve

developing a strategy to best leverage

the integrated value chain we have

across the organisation.

Having arrived in this position from a

number of global leadership roles,

there were many things that drew me

to BGC. Chief among them its

reputation as a well-established, local

business with a hugely diverse portfolio,

a new board and leadership team, and

an obvious ambition to continue to

achieve great things.

Over the next six months, my focus

for our manufacturing businesses is

to work together to drive productivity,

capability, innovation and customer

service.

Part of that will be rebranding and

repositioning our existing product lines,

as well as exploring new ones to ensure

we continue to deliver industry leading,

innovative solutions for our clients.

From a group business standpoint, by strengthening how our divisions work together to collectively procure from each other and externally, BGC will be able to maintain competitiveness and build stronger connections within the Group while offering a family of services to industry that is unparalleled within WA.

Having grown up in Perth, it is fantastic

to be working with such a successful

local business achieving great results

for WA – and I am looking forward to

bringing a fresh, global perspective

to BGC.

BGC Precast begins works for Hollywood Private Hospital

BGC Precast delivered the first of 180 precast panels in February under a contract for Hollywood Private Hospital’s new extension, a Georgiou Group project.

The contract comprised the

supply of high-quality decorative

wall panels for the building’s

exterior, as well as standard

grey panels which will be

fitted internally for the lift and

stair cores.

The special molding required for

similar projects often has a lead

time of four to six weeks prior to

delivery. BGC Precast successfully

acquired the molds in just two

weeks to keep the project to

Georgiou’s schedule, with all

panels delivered by August.

Georgiou Group Senior Site Engineer Rob Monaci said he was very pleased with BGC Precast’s Project Manager Dan Jones and the excellent quality of work being delivered by the team.

Brian Adams – Executive General Manager, Building Products and Group Procurement

BGC Precast has been awarded a significant contract from Acciona for the supply of columns, beams and hollow core flooring for its new thermal Waste to Energy plant in the Kwinana Industrial Area.

The contract win follows a two-

year negotiation process with

Acciona, with multiple meetings in

Madrid to provide expert advice

on best practice for the design

and construction of precast

elements for the plant.

BGC Precast began works in the

second half of this year, with all

elements expected to be delivered

on time by the end of December.

The project is another BGC

collaboration, with BGC Concrete

supplying concrete for the civil

works of the plant.

BGC Precast Business

Development Manager Phil

Surridge said the division was

delighted to be working on such

an innovative project.

“This plant is the first of its type

for Australia. Municipal waste is

burned at a high temperature to

produce steam via a boiler, which

then powers turbines to generate

electricity,” said Phil.

“With talks underway for two

years, we are glad to have been

given the opportunity to deliver

the high-quality precast products

needed to support the heavy-duty

operations of the plant.

“We have heard great feedback

from Acciona on the quality of

service being delivered by BGC

Concrete, and we are eager to

continue to raise the bar for

such a ground-breaking project

in Australia.”
