In the early 1960s, there was a popular TV commercial for Kodak that truly tugged on one’s heartstrings. It showed photographs of a girl growing up from infancy to becoming a mother herself. And
there was a beautiful song that played in the background, entitled, “Turn Around.”
The song was composed by Malvina Reynolds (1900-1978), an American folk/blues singer and political activist. She was especially known for her song, “Little Boxes” which was used on the hit Showtime series, Weeds.
“Turn Around” is a beautiful melody and some of the lyrics are as follows (check it out on YouTube):
“Where are you going, my little one, little one, Where are you going, my baby, my own? Turn around and you're two, Turn around and you're four, Turn around and you're a young girl Going out of my door.”
“Turn Around” will be one of the songs used for this year’s second day Rosh Hashanah cantata, but with a twist. Judy Grundfast, more than forty years ago, composed her own lyrics to the music using Rosh Hashanah as her theme. Here is a sample:
“On Rosh Hashanah we turn around, turn around To look at the year that swiftly has gone. Turn around the year is through. Turn around start anew. Turn around to greet the New Year And praise the new dawn.
Chorus:
Turn around, turn around, turn around
To greet the New Year and praise the new dawn. So, as the Shofar sounds the call to one and all. Remember our fathers and build for our sons. Make a wish. Say a prayer. Turn around – G-d is there. Turn around to greet the New Year And praise the new dawn.”
“Turn Around” is a most appropriate message for Beth El this year. As we turn towards a new year, we embark on a new chapter in the life of our congregation. We turn around to greet the New Year with great anticipation as we craft a new and innovative High Holy Day experience. Cantor David Wolinsky has been hard at work with our wonderful and dedicated Beth El volunteers who will lead some of the music (accompanied by keyboard) for our services. We thank them for their time and commitment.
Along with the music, there will also be readings, poems and meditations interspersed within the services reflecting HHD themes. If you would like to volunteer to read, please let me know.
Our cantata, written by Judy, will include her rendition of “Turn Around” in additional to seven other songs.
Our goal is simple-make your HHD experience a memorable and meaningful one. We will introduce the HHD 7
th inning
stretch, a mass motzi, and an interactive Shofar experience for all the children on the first day of Rosh Hashanah along with special treats from me. And more!
I look forward to seeing and greeting each of you at this year’s services as we Turn Around together.
Shalom and Blessings,
Rabbi Grundfast

Memories Cantor David Wolinsky
Memories can be a wonderful part of a person’s past. They are like pictures, and remind you of a time gone by, bringing back these warm fuzzy moments which bring you joy and pleasure. Please allow me the opportunity to share some of my memories with you.
I remember being thrown out of first grade from the Copley school district and becoming part of the first class at the school now called The Lippman Day School. The school met in the lower floor of Beth El. I remember the teachers and staff as being some of the kindest and committed people I ever met.
I remember driving down Copley Road and seeing Nagel’s Meat Market and Milt Sass’ Shoe Store.
I remember making friends such as Cantor Bruce Braun and Robert Ramnytz, both of whom remain dear friends 45 years later.
I remember Rev. Saltzman, the Ritual Director of Beth El. His love of Judaism and synagogue life was what made me want to become active in Jewish communal life.
I remember both Cantor Gertz from Temple Israel and Cantor Stein both being at my parents’ home every night of shiva upon the passing of both my parents.
So many more memories, but I need to keep this shorter rather than longer.
After realizing that I may be coming here for the High Holy Days, I began to remember all of these memories and more. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rabbi
Grundfast, the Board, and the Committees for putting their faith in me and inviting me back. It has been an opportunity to remember the past and the memories which are clear even today. I am as well thrilled with the opportunity to help create new memories.
Speaking of creating, this year will be a recreation of the High Holy Day services. The Rabbi, the Board, and I, are attempting to find ways to refresh and reinvigorate the High Holy Day services.
Services, for as long as I can remember, have been beautiful, dignified, and meaningful. We do not wish to do a makeover of the High Holy Days, but rather, enhance the services by offering more opportunities for congregants to participate. I have found Rabbi Grundfast to be a wonderful, forward thinking individual who wants only the best for Beth El.
After a while, no matter how brilliant and talented the Rabbi and Cantor are, if formats do not change services can become a mind numbing experience. I believe that the changes being proposed will not only make you think with your brain, but also make you feel with your heart. With the combining of the two services, adjustments are being made to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. So do not worry about the changes, just come and join us and help make us a true community.
See you at services.
B’Shalom,
Cantor David Wolinsky

BULLETIN OF BETH EL CONGREGATION Page 5
As summer
begins to wind
down and back
to school season
approaches, so
too the High
Holidays are on their way.
Jewish tradition provides us
with several reminders of the
upcoming Days of Awe, as
well as a number of ways we
can prepare for them. Elul, the
month that precedes the New
Year, is considered the time
when G-d is particularly
accessible to the Jewish people.
The letters in the name of the
month are embodied in the
verse from the Song of
Songs—“I am my beloved’s
and my beloved is mine.” This
highlights the loving relation-
ship between God and the
Jewish people.
Planning and preparation at
Beth El is year round whether
for our Center for Jewish
Learning, events, services or
the High Holidays. Continuous
adjustment, changes and
adaptations have become the
norm for all of us. As a
congregation we thrive on
improvements, flexibility and
becoming a stronger family.
Just in the past month some
fabulous events have either
been completed or are about to
begin. All of this reflects on the
abilities of our staff and great
volunteers.
First, our newly updated
website bethelakron.com is
now available to everyone to
actively use in many ways. Navigation allows for easy
access to the happenings at
Beth El. Updating your
personal profile is a click
away, responding for events
and paying online, using your credit card to pay for
events/dinners, dues, etc. The
efforts managed by MEF
Consulting Group, owned by
Marsha Friedman, and
numerous volunteers, made this needed project a model for
many organizations. Many
thanks to the Lippman Kanfer
Family Foundation for
supporting the office
infrastructure improvements.
Second, one of our plans since our move three years ago
to the Schultz Campus for
Jewish Life was to build a
pergola on our patio adjacent
to the chapel. This structure
will be built using rough sawn cedar and will be used as our
Sukkah and for many other
events. Construction using
some outstanding capital
campaign funds was approved
by the Board. It will begin in August and be completed by
early September under the
supervision of Steve Botnick.
Third, Arlyne Bochnek will
be our new part-time office manager beginning August 13, 2015 reporting to Erin Katz Ford, Director of Education
and Programming. Arlyne recently retired as Regional Youth Director, Central Region
Synagogue Youth of The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in Cleveland and provides us with
outstanding capabilities. Please welcome her and her husband Howard to the Beth El family.
Lastly, High Holiday preparations are in full swing coordinated by Rabbi
Grundfast, our guest Cantor David Wolinsky, and Erin Katz Ford. They are working along
with more than a dozen volunteers who are lending their voices to make this a most inspirational, innovative and
interactive service uniting us as one Beth El community. The second day of Rosh Hashanah
will feature a cantata centering on the themes of the Days of Awe written by Judy Grundfast with music, songs, and stories
performed by our congregants.
And these are the lazy, hazy
days of summer...
Shalom,
Marty

some friends to join you to ensure
that we have the required Minyan.

Sunday, August 30th 10:00 AM
Workmen’s Circle Cemetery Swartz Road, Akron
Join us as we honor the tradition of visiting the graves of loved ones during the month of Elul by placing a stone at the memorial to the Six Million Monument.
This program is sponsored by the Yom Hashoah/Holocaust
Remembrance Committee.
Shaw JCC Yom Hashoah Committee, community wide planning committee for remembering victims of the Holocaust, invites everyone to a brief Service in Memory of the Six Million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. The service will take place Sunday, August 30 at 10:00 AM at Workmen’s Circle Cemetery on Swartz Road.
It is a tradition to visit graves of loved ones during the month of Elul as we prepare for a new year. The Monument in Memory of The Six Million who Perished Al Kiddush Hashem 1939-1945 was dedicated by Workmen’s Circle Members of Branch 587 and Friends, September 17, 1961 as a place for the Akron Jewish Community to come together to remember those lost. An annual service of remembrance was organized for many years by William (Bill) Axelrod and James (Jim) Barnett. Members of the Yom Hahsoah Committee have decided to reinstate this annual community visit to the memorial.
Everyone is encouraged to come to place a stone of remembrance at Workmen’s Circle Memorial to the Six Million Monument. Join in brief prayers and words of remembrance.
Carpools will leave the JCC promptly at 9:30 AM. For more information, or to reserve your place in a carpool, contact Myra Feinberg, Shaw JCC Adult Services Coordinator, [email protected] or (330) 835-0056.

Rabbi’s Reminder Talmud Class
During August, our Talmud Class moves from Sunday
morning class to Monday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. All
are welcome to join our on-going class. You’ll fit right in.
We will meet Monday nights on August 10, 24, and 31.
We are continuing our study with the tenth chapter of Massechet Sanhedrin which teaches
about the resurrection of the dead; the future world and life after death. For more information
please contact Rabbi Grundfast at 330.864.2105 x 114 or [email protected].
Happy Summer to All! Many people often ask if summer is a slow time. This summer has not
been slow. The Synagogue has been in planning mode for many programs!
This year our Forum dinners will feature Dr. Scott Scarborough, President
of the University of Akron in the fall, and David Gilbert in the
Spring. David E. Gilbert is President & CEO of the Greater Cleveland
Sports Commission and Destination Cleveland. The Sports Commission’s
goal is to make Greater Cleveland the nation’s foremost destination for
amateur sporting events and activities. The organization is responsible for attracting,
promoting and managing major amateur athletic events and to create sporting opportunities for
youth and amateur athletes.
We are excited to host Rabbi Hammer in November! Rabbi Hammer was at Beth El back in
the mid ‘60s. Rabbi Hammer will speak on Sunday, November 22 followed by a reception.
We are excited for another year of Synaplex. The committee is working on new ideas for
Synaplex as well as keeping some of the favored options such as Serious Torah Study. Our
Hebrew school students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade will be returning in the fall on
Tuesday afternoons from 4:15 PM to 6:00 PM and one Saturday a month. Last year, we had
our first organized preschool program in many years taught by Morgan Domokos. Morgan led
a fabulous class! Families discovered the Jewish holidays through stories, crafts, and songs
thanks to Miss Judy. This year, it is back by popular demand! We will welcome Rachel
Osherow as our Sunday School Preschool teacher! Our Preschool class is open to any family -
students must be at least 2½ by September to join.
Other educational opportunities will include our Sunday morning Beth El Adult Education
Series that will begin with our Veterans' Day Program in November with other presenters to
speak in the spring. I am looking forward to a wonderful year!

Taste of Torah Monday, August 17, 7 PM
On August 17, we will discuss The Agunah. Come learn about the issues of the Agunah, women who are "trapped in" or "chained to" a marriage and cannot get a Jewish divorce nor remarry according to Jewish law. Julie Katz will lead the session exploring and studying texts in the Bible and the Talmud, and relating it to real issues in modern times – from soldiers missing in action to tragic events like 9/11.
Please join us at 7:00 PM in the Mercaz room for dessert and a lively discussion.
