St. Kitts/Nevis over St. Maarten in straight sets
Basseterre, St. Kitts July 27 – Host team St. Kitts Nevis/
defeated St. Maarten in the opening encounter of the
2014 FIVB world championship qualification women Round
I Group D (25 – 9; 25- 16; 25 -19)
Team St. Kitts/Nevis was led by Brenda Allen Edinborough
with a game leading 18 points while captain Antoinette
Henry chipped in with 7 points.
Latasha Mills and Chesley Augustine both posted 10 points
for St. Maarten in a losing cause.
Coach of the St. Kitts Nevis team Steadroy Collins was
satisfied with the victory. “It was not really a difficult game
for our girls but I must commend the opponent who in my mind fought well and made a
game out of it at certain times,” he said.
Captain Antoinette Henry seemed to have enjoyed the entire affair. “Yes I did enjoy the
game, we started out slowly then took control and seeing that there was no real threat we
did not try to do too much and conserved some energy for the game later this evening, she
reported
Coach Arrindell of the St. Maarten team said that he was not disappointed with the effort. I
am particularly pleased with the way they handled themselves against a very experienced
St. Kitts/Nevis team. However I think we had too many service error which I think was a
reflection of the nerves that the girls experiencing in their first major tournament,” he
admitted
Captain Mills spoke to the improved effort in the second and third sets. “We told the girls
that we had nothing to lose against a tough opponent and we went and gave it our best
shot. I was really impressed with the defensive effort in particular that carried us a long
way,” she said.
Anguilla Tops Bermuda in game II of World Cup Qualifier
Basseterre, St. Kitts July 27 - Anguilla persevered over
Bermuda in three sets (25 -21; 25-16; 25-18) in game 2
of the 2014 FIVB world championship qualification
women Round I Group D.
The game was not as easy as the score suggests as
Anguilla was really made to work. In fact in the first
set Bermuda had a four point lead (20- 16) when
Anguilla called a time out. On the resumption Anguilla
reeled off 7 unanswered points before taking the game at 25-21.
This seemed to have knocked the wind from the sails of the Bermudans as the second set
was easier for Anguilla (25-16).
Coach Jason Liburd of Anguilla thought that it was a tough game. “No game is easy until the
end. We found that this was a good test for us since we have been training hard without
much quality games so this was an ideal test for our first match,” he said.
Liburd pointed to the attack of Suzan Webster and the serving of Khalidah Banks who
combined to provide most of the points for team Anguilla.
Captain Banks was obviously jubilant at the end. Her job was to encourage the troops at
times when they were down. “I simply told them to go back to the basics of cover, pass and
defend. Do not underestimate them and play your best and that just what we did today”,
she reported.
Captain of the losing team Victoria Stevenson was not disappointing in spite of the defeat. “I
was impressed the way our young charges played. The truth is we play against a team that
played very well as a unit. I kept encouraging them to just focus on one point at a time and
to ensure that they do their role,” she told the press.
Coach Blee was all smiles. I think that we can take away a lot of positives from this game.
There were times when we shining and time when we had to comeback, she
said. She attributed the loss to losing focuses at crucial moments.
The tournament continues today at 6 pm when Anguilla meets St. Maarten and St. Kitts
clash with Bermuda at 8 pm
Bermuda outlasts St. Maarten for first victory
Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 27th, 2012 – Bermuda won in straight sets (25- 22; 25 21; 25-20) over St. Maarten in game 3 of the 2014 FIVB world championship qualification women Round I Group D . The three games were similar in pattern as Bermuda enjoyed an early lead while St. Maarten worked their way back mid way through the game only to lose in the end. The second game was particularly close as St. Maarten who trailed 1-6 early in the game rallied to lead at 18 -17. However Bermuda replied with an 8-3 run to take the game.
Coach Arrindell felt that it was their errors that handed Bermuda the game. “We made too many errors, the majority of those points that Bermuda got came from service errors and miscommunication on our behalf so we literally gifted them the game “, Arrindell surmised. Captain Latasha Mills of St. Maarten was a bit disappointed as she felt that they could have done better. “The coach’s assessment is correct we now have to pick ourselves up and look forward to an even better showing again Anguilla tomorrow,” she said. Coach Blee of Bermuda reported that her camp was very high spirits. “I think that we are happy for not only for the first victory but for the way we played. We had a very long talk after our last match and asked the players refocused on their individual roles and today we came out really fighting, playing well as a unit. We are now looking forward to the game with St. Kitts”, she concluded. Lisa Leblanc was the top scorer for Bermuda with 11 points while Captain Victoria Stevenson contributed 10. For St. Maarten Andrea Flemming lead all scorers with 13 points as the only person in double figures. Bermuda next plays St. Kitts/Nevis on Saturday July 28th
St. Kitts/Nevis defeats Anguilla straight sets
Basseterre, St. Kitts July 27th 2012 - Team St. Kitts/ Nevis pulled off a convincing victory over Anguilla in three sets (25- 18; 25 -19; 25 -12) to close day 1 of the 2014 FIVB world championship qualification women Round I Group D. Veteran Brenda Allen Edinborough had a sterling performance in all departments to lead the team to victory with 20 points. These consisted of 9 spikes, 9 blocks and 2 service winners. Team mate Shanecia Dyer supported the winning cause with 13 points
For Anguilla Susan Webster had 12 points while Ludiane Leveret chipped in with 9 points. Coach Jason Liburd pointed to the poor passing of his team that led to the down fall. In this match we did not pass at all and I thought that poor passing was the underlying factor that contributed to the loss. The Captain Khalidah Banks was obviously disappointed. “This is not a good feeling for me at all. We went into the game pretty confident and I don’t think we were tired physically maybe mentally as we got good rest during the day. So I can’t quite figure out the problem why were weren’t passing properly,” she revealed. For the coach of the St. Kitts/Nevis team, Steadroy Collins, it was the actions of his team that accounted for the victory. “From the beginning we came out ready for the challenge and most of our game came together. The blocking in particular I think frustrated them. Our serving was very good too we did not have as much errors and the setting improved over game 1. However it is not yet over since we might very well meet them in the finals again”, he intimated. Captain Antoinette Henry was all smiles with the victory. “It is obvious that they came out hard at us and despite a slow start we were able to hold them off. We knew that they would go to Ludianne (Leveret) as the main hitter but our blockers were ready to stuff her best shots,” she said. St. Kitts/Nevis Next place Bermuda on Saturday 28th as the only undefeated team so far.
