This week’s Agri show in Tzaneen, staged by emerging farmers from Mopani and paid for by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, offered a number of lectures on farming practices and fi nan-cial management. There were a few displays of produce from

emerging farmers, as well as some eqiuipment. Unfortunately the attendance was much lower than expected. It remains hard to comprehend why this show can’t be combined with the an-nual Letaba Expo. People are now referring to this show as the

“apartheid show”. Rumor has it that there are people working behind the scenes on getting the Letaba Expo, Aan die Oever Boeredag and the Emerging Farmers’ Show to be presented under one roof as a worthwhile show piece for the community.

For the umpteenth time the Greater Tzaneen Municipality had to throw good money aft er bad money for a legal matt er, because the GTM was at fault. The amount wasted in legal costs, work delayed and a sett lement undoubtedly ran into quite a few mil-lion rand.

An independent arbitrator (an ad-vocate of the High Court) granted an order against the GTM in the matt er of a road built between Sasekani and Nkowankowa. MacP Construction was awarded the tender to build the road, but for various reasons this con-struction company encountered mate-rial delays (att ributable to the GTM) in the project. The road was designed by SML Civil Engineers from Polok-wane, but certain design features made it absolutely impossible to even start building the road.

In the end claims and counter-claims had to be negotiated, but an amicable solution could not be reached and the matt er was referred for arbitration. MacP Construction was further left with no choice but to cancel the tender agreement.

The Bulletin has in-formation confi rming how much this round has cost the GTM, but Mr Makapane Modipa asked us through MacP’s att orney, Mr Louis Erasmus of Thomas & Swanepoel Att orneys, not to publish it, since he took legal action as a matt er of principle and not to “make money” out of the GTM’s actions .

In the meantime the Bulletin has obtained information about yet an-other bombshell legal problem facing

the GTM. From the in-formation to our disposal

this one will not be child’s play, since it involves a project of close to R140 million.

watch and we will report to our readers

as we further investigate these and other matt ers of critical concern to the GTM’s subjects in general, and ratepayers in particu-lar. We will present a number of ex-posés in the next couple of weeks.

‘n Afrigter is dus V.I.

probeer afrig.

A local businessman barely escaped with his life aft er a shootout with three suspected att ackers on his property in Agatha just outside Tzaneen. On Tuesday evening at around 20:30, Mr Billy McKechnie and his wife, Minett e, were in their home when their dogs started barking ferociously outside at their fence. Alarmed, Billy took his 9 mm pistol and went outside to investigate.

“I just knew that something wasn’t right because of the way the dogs were behaving. When I stepped outside I noticed they were barking at the bushes in the far corner of the yard and immediately went back inside the house.”

Once inside his home he retrieved his semi-auto-matic shotgun, switched off all the lights inside and outside the house and tried to get hold of his neigh-bour. “My neighbour was away on a trip overseas and so I radioed Agatha Community Security and told them I am going to investigate the noise and will keep them updated. I grabbed my fl ashlight and shotgun and went outside again.”

As he crossed the lawn he realised that one of the spotlights were still on and he was walking straight into the light. “Suddenly there was a loud bang and the sound of a bullet whizzing over my head, so close I could feel the wind from it as it passed. I dropped to the ground and fi red three shots into the bushes from where I saw the muzzle blast, before taking shelter behind a tree.”

McKechnie shone his fl ashlight into the bushes and saw three men with a hunting rifl e. It looked as though they were trying to reload the weapon, but were struggling to do so. “I was worried about

Minett e being alone in the house and so I took the opportunity and ran back

inside.” Once safe inside, they alerted the

community safety group over the radio and called the police. Within min-

utes both the SAPS and members of the community group arrived at their home and launched a search for the suspects. Upon investigating the scene, detectives

allegedly found drag marks on the ground leading away from where the suspects were

hiding. This led them to believe that McKech-nie had managed to wound one of the would-be

assailants and that his two accomplices had dragged him away when they fl ed.

“I still have no clue why they never fi red more shots at me and believe that their rifl e had jammed. Police investigators found a 9 mm casing on the ground as well and it appears as though one of the men fi red at me while I was shooting at them. I’m just thankful to be safe and alive and that my family is okay.

“Thank you to the SAPS who dispatched four vehi-cles to the scene and arrived within minutes aft er our call. We would also like to thank the Agatha commu-nity members who also responded immediately aft er the call,” he said

The SAPS is currently investigating the matt er and have started searching hospitals in the area for gun-shot victims.

The Moringa tree (Moringa Oleifera) is a slender, semi-deciduous, perennial tree that grows to about ten meters tall, with drooping branches. It thrives in subtropical and tropi-cal climates, giving fruit and fl owers contin-ually.

However, the drought resistant Moringa grows best in dry, sandy soil. This makes it an ideal tree to grow in semi-desert conditions, as it provides both food and shade. The Mo-ringa is a fast growing tree that can reach up to three meters in its fi rst year.

Ms Nomsa Ngwenya who hails from Nel-spruit but now stays in Tzaneen began har-vesting Moringa trees about eleven years ago, and with passion for the plant she start-ed the NTL Baraka Eco Farming project and Tourism Co-operative.

She began trading and harvesting three years ago and last week Wednesday she launched a Moringa outlet at Letsitele, where

locals can easily access the product.

Moringa has been used for centuries in Asia and Africa for its nutritional and heal-ing properties. The plant has been called “the miracle tree” and “the tree of life” and the plant is also known as the drumstick tree and horseradish tree.

Every part of the Mo-ringa tree is useful, from the leaves to the roots, providing a rich source of food and medicine. The leaves are said to be a rich source of nutrients. According to Ngwenya,

Moringa leaves contain seven times the vitamin C of oranges, four times the cal-cium of milk, four times the vitamin A of carrots, three times the potassium of ba-nanas, three times the iron of spinach and as much protein as that found in eggs.

Uses of the Moringa TreeNgwenya also says Moringa leaves

can be added to a salad or they can be cooked to make a spinach-like meal. The young seed pods, called drumsticks, can be prepared in a similar way to green beans and taste a bit like asparagus. The fl owers can be cooked and mixed with other foods or fried in batt er.

The fl owers can also be used to make a nutritious tea. The seeds can be removed from more mature pods and eaten like peas or roasted like peanuts. Seeds, if eaten raw, are very bitt er. Moringa leaves can be blended with lemon grass and the

combination makes an excellent ice tea, she told us.

Moringa seed powder has anti-bacterial properties, and can be used during water purifi cation. The plant can also be used as an animal feed and used as fertilizer and natural pesticide. When planted in a row, the Mo-ringa tree makes a fast growing hedge and

wind-breaker.Moringa is an excellent multi-nutrient for

pregnant women and supports the produc-tion of breast milk aft er birth, while support-ing mom to replenish her own nutrients.

The fact that Moringa grows rapidly and easily makes it especially appealing for im-poverished areas, and it’s been used success-

fully for boosting nutri-tional intake in Malawi, Senegal, and India. In these areas, Moringa may be the most nutritious food locally available, and it can be harvested year-round.

Moringa oil was prized in perfume manufacture in ancient Egypt, classical Greece, and the Roman empire.

“Personally, I began growing Moringa trees about eleven years ago and I can att est to the fact that it grows like a weed. For those living in third-world countries, it may very well prove to be a valuable source of nutrition,” said Ngwenya.

However, she doesn’t rec-ommend planting one in your backyard for health purposes, as the leaves are very small and it is a time-ly and exceedingly tedious task to harvest the leaves from the stem to eat them.

Self-destructionIt would be foolishly credulous to argue that the Greater Tzaneen Municipality is not on a road of self-destruction. The way money is wasted in this municipality calls for an in-depth investigation. In fact, it begs for an forensic audit.

It would be interesting (rather, it is cer-tain to be alarming) to see how much money has been wasted on legal costs over the past few years.

Furthermore, an analysis of how legal costs have been calculated for what and by whom could be yet another alarming eye-opener.

To conduct an in-depth survey of the abuse and/or scandalous and reckless ne-glect of infrastructure will indisputably confi rm that the GTM’s councillors ought to be brought to book for the way in which they fail to execute good governance.

Add to this the shamelessness with which they don’t hesitate to spend rate-payers’ money on luxuries benefi tt ing themselves.

The arrogance with which they treat their customers, suppliers, the poor etce-tera is nothing less than glaring injustice being dumped upon their citizens.

helpende hande

As God huilKan God huil? In Jer-emia 13:17 staan: “Maar as julle nie luister nie, sal Ek in stilte huil oor julle hoogmoed, Ek sal huil en huil, trane stort omdat my kudde as ballinge weggevoer word”.

Hoe sou ‘n mens hom tipeer? Godsman… ges-insman... familieman... volks-man... briljante boer... sakeman ... leier in sy gemeenskap.

Verder was sy familie se belange ononderhandelbaar.

persoon in landboukringe.

The importance of developing early reading skills was promoted through the efforts of the Letsitele library. A group of pupils from a Nkowanko-wa-based English medium pre-school, Arise and Shine, had the opportunity to interact with the library’s staff dur-ing a planned outing organized for them by their teacher, Ms Julia Mokoe-na. During the visit the youngsters were taken on a tour of the facility and were treated to a story telling session by Ms Marie van der Westhuijzen. For the pre-schoolers it was a day filled with fun activities, including poetry readings, dancing, singing and even

a sit-down story telling session. The theme for the day was “Butterflies” and throughout the programme the chil-dren were taught more about the biol-ogy and the place of these tiny winged creatures in the natural cycle of things. After the educational lessons each child was handed the necessary mate-rials to create their own colourful but-terfly which they could take home with them. The Letsitele library frequently hosts programmes in an effort to famil-iarise learners with the magic of books and the joys of libraries. Investments explained: Part 1What is the essence of investments?

An investment has to give you an INCOME and CAPITAL GROWTH!

Each investment has its own characteristics as summarized in Table 1.1. In this table we can see that no one investment can adhere to all the requirements. Thus a combined investment divided between all the asset classes

will have to be done. Furthermore, the market tends to move through different cycles and the investments will have to be adapted to these cycles. The same exercise will also have to be repeated for offshore investments to

further diversify the investment portfolio. All these investments can be done by investing on the JSE in Rand. Lastly, frequent changes will have to be made with regard to the asset composition and asset allocation. Meaning that the

total investment plan of each individual will have to be revised and rebalanced on a regular basis.

The Police within the seven Cluster Police Stations — being Tzaneen, Bolobedu, Maake, Let-sitele, Ritavi , Mokwakwaila and Modjadjiskloof — have already started with special Festive Sea-son’s operations in conjunction with all relevant stake holders, to dealing with criminal tendencies around the clock until the end of February 2016.

Two Police dedicated task teams under the direct command of the Cluster Commander, Brig Thom-as Shingange, have been formed. Members of the community are requested to give unconditional support to these members through quality information on crime and they should contact Shingange on 082 565 8155 (24 hours).

The main focus of the opera-tions will be on identifi ed crime hotspots. The other focus area will be in and around the shop-ping malls. Mall managements are advised to be on board by tightening their internal security measures.

Tribal Authorities, churches, and civil society and the Com-munity Policing Forums are also requested to join hands with Po-lice to prevent crime.

People are still encouraged and

advised to stop buying stolen goods and rather report that to the Police. Late night driving, hitchhiking, giving people lift s and walking alone in bushy areas, especially at night, must be avoid-ed. Liquor abuse and non-compli-ance by some liquor outlet own-ers, are still areas of concern.

• When going on holiday, ar-range somebody to stay in your house. When travelling long dis-tances, leave early. When going for shopping in towns and shop-ping centres, park your vehicle in a safe public parking area and lock your car properly Do not leave any valuable items on top of the car seats. Beware of bogus Police offi cers. Be careful when approached by strangers.

Keep the following names and contact numbers for emergency calls to the SAPS or to report crime: Modjadjiskloof: Lt Col Khabubu on 082 565 8145. Mokwakwaila: Capt Seunane on 0609960060. Bolobedu: Col Sekhwela on 082 565 8458. Tzaneen: Brig Bensch on 082 469 1446. Ritavi: Col Mushwana on 072 493 9488. Maake: Col Schalk van Schalk-wyk on 082 565 8439. Letsitele: Lt Col Machete on 082 565 8100.

Police say they are ready for the Festive Season

The “Ellenboog murder” case has been transferred to Polok-wane as it is now deemed high profi le. This is according to Tza-neen SAPS spokesperson, Const Glenda Maimele.

In Septembe this year, the Chauhan brothers were att acked by three armed men in their res-idence at the Ellenboog security complex in Tzaneen. The com-plex is situated along Bound-ary Road across the way from Ben Vorster high school. One of the brothers, 24-year old Irshad Chauhan, succumbed to his in-juries when one of the att ackers shot him in the abdomen.

His brother recovered from his wounds in Mediclinic Tzaneen. The suspects reportedly made off with an undisclosed amount of money and keys to the fami-

ly business. Friends and family members believe that the att ack was a planned murder although this has not yet been confi rmed.

A week aft er the incident, Lim-popo SAPS reported the arrest of four men in connection with the murder. Three of the sus-pects were released and one man, a Zimbabwean national, was charged with murder and house breaking. He appeared in the Tzaneen magistrate’s court and remained in custody pending further investigations. “We can-not comment on where the sus-pect is being held at the moment, but he is in our custody and the investigation and search for his accomplices still continues,” said Col Moatshe Ngoepe of the SAPS.

Krieket bied ʼn kuurvir rugby-babelas

Merensky High School’s rugby players att ended the yearly rugby prize giving and dinner. The school’s rugby man-agement awarded each player a spe-cial blue certifi cate for their eff ort and participation during 2015. A standing tradition at Plasieland is for the fi rst team to select one player who they

think played the best rugby for the year. This year’s award went to Rasen-ge Kubayi.

Johannes Seerane, an old Plasie and new teacher at Merensky, was the guest speaker. He told the boys that if they believe in themselves and work hard, they can achieve anything in life.

Merensky rugby players awarded

Seen in the photo are Rasenge Kubayi with fi rst team coach, Mr Kobus Vorster.

On Saturday eight of Merensky High School’s committed rugby coaches and players competed in the Drakensig Touchies held at the Air Force Sports Centre in Hoed-spruit. A supporting team traveled in two-wheeler style to cheer their team during their eight games of blood, sweat and tears. Jubilation reigned when the Plasie team end-ed in fourth place. Seen here are (front) Wessel van Rooyen, Clinton Gerber, Johannes Seerane and Louis Fourie. At the back are Seph Oosthuizen, Mikyle le Roux, Danie Olivier and Magnus Steyn (jr).

Oubal help graag hiermee.

speler, was deel van Heyneke se planne. So ook mede-gemid-

vo beskikbaar was?

vegbare 287 lopies op-gestapel, in hul toege-late 50 boulbeurte.
