verkeersregulering / Limpopo’s head of traffi c aff airs said overloaded vehicles are a problem in the province. We say the problem is poor law enforcement and focus on the wrong aspects of traffi c control”.

Kobus Visser Ditto - verkeerde verkeersregulering. Back to basics (Die drywer.) Jacques De Beer Overloaded vehicles are a problem but only because Traffi c Offi cials have allowed them on the road

Hoekom?

Francois Peyper Overloading is a small portion of the problem. Poor law enforcement and corrupt offi cials are to be blamed. Too many offi cials do have business in

transport. How can you enforce the law if your own vehicles are part of the problem, and add on, corrupt offi cials taking bribes, even living from this rotten behaviour.

Vlieg dink dit hoort so!

“a type of crime that is not considered serious when compared with some other crimes: pett y crime such as shoplift ing”

“minor crimes such as theft , trespassing” “a small crime such as minor theft , tres-

passing” “a crime that is not very serious”“A pett y crime is a minor legal off ense. In

some instances, the term is used as an alter-native phrase for misdemeanour, while in other cases, pett y crimes are a separate ca-tegory of off enses. In either instance, a pett y crime can refer to both criminal off enses and civil infractions. Examples of off enses that may be pett y crimes include public drunk-enness, jaywalking, and pickpocketing.”

“A misdemeanour is any ‘lesser’ criminal act’”

“A minor crime and for which the punish-ment is usually just a small fi ne or short term of imprisonment.”

V.I. (Vlieg’s Insiens) regverdig!

Yet another drama has unfolded at Letaba Hos-pital, following the alleged death of patients late last week, as a result of loadshedding.

News reports on radio, TV and in national newspapers are incorrect, according to the MEC of Health, Ms Phophi Ramathuba.

The department also categorically denied reports that there was no diesel for the hos-pital’s emergency generator when the load-shedding “caught them off guard”.

The incident allegedly took place on Thurs-day last week. It is alleged that three people died (fi rst news reports said two) during the power outage. The number of patients who passed away is, however, contested by Ramathuba.

According to her, one person died as a result of the outage but loadshedding did not cause the deaths. “We are aware of the situation at the hospital and we have since sent a team to conduct preliminary investigations.

“The patient was a diabetic,” Ramathuba told Bulletin.

We also contacted the department’s spokes-person, Mr Macks Lesufi , who contradicted the MEC, saying that two patients did in fact die during the power outage! According to him, one patient died on the day of the load-shedding while the second one a day later (Friday). He too stated that the cause of the patients’ deaths was not loadshedding.

“We can confi rm that post-mortem results will show that their deaths couldn’t have been as a result of the loadshedding,” Lesufi told Bulletin.

Meanwhile, the DA in the province vowed to open a case against the department. In a press statement earlier this week, the DA was quoted as saying: “Our public healthcare sys-tem should be a model of excellence, empow-ering South Africans to live healthy and pro-ductive lives. There should be nothing less than full accountability for cases of extreme negligence, as witnessed at Letaba Hospital.”

The DA further said that it has established that the hospital’s generator was either not fuelled or it was faulty. This was also con-fi rmed publicly by Health Minister Mr Aaron Motsoaledi when he visited the hospital early last week.

The DA, on behalf of the families aff ected, says it plans to demand the following from the provincial government:• That a post mortem be conducted by an inde-pendent pathologist to establish the cause and the time of death;• That the aff ected families should be assisted to access legal recourse to take on the government and ensure that justice is done;• Demand that the provincial government holds the hospital’s offi cials accountable who are respon-sible for negligently causing the deaths of these patients and engage in a series of protest actions until the families’ demands are met.

Provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Ott o said that an enquiry has been lodged with the SAPS in Polokwane. The inquiry was, however, transferred to the Tzaneen SAPS to investigate. Bulletin was unable to obtain comment

from the SAPS in Tzaneen at the time of going to print, despite numerous att empts. We were promised that the SAPS will look into the matt er and report back to us, but they did not.

During our eff orts to communicate with the hospital’s CEO or offi cial spokesperson (in vain), we spoke to two senior doctors and a few other members of the staff , who said a cover up is suspected.

“Things here are in a mess. Doctors who work for the government run private practic-es and they ’disappear’ from as early as 10:00 in the morning to go to their respective sur-geries,” we were told.

It is also alleged that diesel is being stolen from the hospital in alarming quantities and even medical supplies are oft en in short sup-

ply because of theft .Numerous other allegations have been

made, but if published it could jeopardise the current investigations and the Bulletin decided rather to allow the investigation to continue unhindered.

Towards the end of last year members of the National Council of Provinces visited the hospital and they were not happy with what they found (and saw) there. Special men-tion was made about the neglected hospital grounds.

About two weeks later a fi re destroyed a wing of the hospital and left offi cials and the relevant authorities very concerned.

e Letaba Hospital nightmare— Death of two patients denied by MEC for health

A fire that destroyed a wing of the Letaba Hospital towards the end of last year caused great panic and discomfort to patients. A crisis was prevented when patients were quickly tranferred to other hospitals in the area. However, there is great concern about the situation at the hospital in general.

dia with Dalena Mostert. Dalena Mostert, passionate birder and pho-tographer, will transport the audience to India in her talk about a previous birding trip to this fascinating area, and show off some of her stunning photos. Dalena grew up in the Karoo. Her father, a palaeontologist, loved nature and taught his family about the veld, the birds and animals. In 1990 Dalena became extremely ill and suff ered from post-traumatic depression. She started birding for therapy, and never stopped! It became such a passion that she joined Birdingpal, started digiscoping, and in 2006 became serious about bird photography. She set herself two targets: to visit each con-tinent at least once in her lifetime, and to see at least 3 000 bird species. So far, she has com-piled an extensive photographic database of Southern African species, has travelled to Eu-rope and Asia and is working on plans to visit South America in 2017. She works at Westfalia in the fi eld of intellectual property and has many other hobbies including reading, handi-craft, astronomy and gardening. The talk will be held at the Macadamia Com-munity Centre on Thursday 25 June at 18:30. Chai and coff ee will be served afterwards. Visi-tors are always welcome and pay a small fee of R20. The train will arrive in Tzaneen on 27 June and will be fully operational from 29 June to 3 July and again from 6 to 10 July. Tzaneen was chosen as the rst station in Limpopo. The Phelophepha Healthcare Train was established in 1994 as an initiative by the Transnet Foundation. It provides poor community members with a ordable, acces-sible, mobile healthcare services, while sup-plementing and supporting existing health services and facilities in the poorest rural com-munities of our country. The Train consists of eighteen coaches and covers four provinces each year with a total of 35 stops. Services pro-vided on the train range from dental clinic, eye clinic, psychology/counselling clinic and basic health education for community volunteers. It brings with it twenty contracted sta mem-bers, supported by 39 fi nal year students from various disciplines. While the train will serve as a healthcare centre, it will also serve as an economic injector in the Greater Tzaneen area. Residents of the Greater Tzaneen area will be equipped with skills, to empower them to step up and take more challenges. The healthcare clinics will give preference to very poor peo-

ple, people who cannot aff ord basic life sus-taining commodities, communities that can-not be reached easily and aged people who are prospective recipients of social grant.

The Congress of South African Students (CO-SAS) in Mopani recently raised concerns re-garding the state of its Progressive Youth Al-liance, which is said to be losing elections at centres of higher education.

The student body is convinced that the ANC Youth League as a leader of the PYA impacts immensely on the situation. It wel-comed the nomination and election of Pule Mabe as president of the ANCYL and Thu-

lani Twala for the position of the treasurer general. COSAS’ regional secretary, Promise Peta, said that the two nominees will ensure the existence of a strong PYA and also assist in the im-mense work of supporting a vibrant student movement in the province and other parts of the country.

Peta, however, was quick to dispute claims regarding Mabe’s age by outside forces and opposition parties. “We regard questions on his age as spineless, cowardice, and child-ish acts coming from those who parachuted to positions of responsibilities in the move-ments, hence cannot stand the presence of tried and tested leaders,” he said.

“The constitution of the Youth dictates that its membership is open to any youth between the age of 14 and 35 years period,” he added.

Peta, who is a young leader trained within the ANCYL in the Mopani District, explained that Cosas recommitt ed itself to the region-al executive committ ee to work tirelessly to ensure that learning and teaching remain the only order.

The student body also plans to continue the fi ght for bett er learning and teaching con-ditions in schools. “Our dedication in this region is unquestionable and more relevant in this period of our revolution for free and quality education and that of economic free-dom in general than ever before,” he said.

GeeIn ’n Europese dorp was daar twee haarkappers: ’n Italianer en ’n Rus.

Een week was daar skielik ’n groot toename in Tony Sachett i se besigheid.

“Jou kliënte se geld wat by my beland het.

The real problemThe department of transport in Limpopo is amongst other things, also responsible for traffi c control and road safety.

Aft er the horror accident at Musina that claimed the lives of two children earlier this week, the spokesperson for the department of transport announced that the province has a problem with overloaded vehicles.

This is indeed so and concerned motorists of Limpopo experience it as a grave matt er.

However, traffi c law enforcement is what should really worry the depart-ment. The province has earned itself a name for not being serious about proper law enforcement.

Overloaded vehicles is a daily sight on our roads. What is not a daily sight is strong action taken by traffi c offi cers. The situation with the Magoebaskloof and Georges Valley routes is proof of the lack of vigorous action to promote road safety and to nourish respect for the law and the rules of the road.

Despite both routes being No Go roads for heavy vehicles nobody seems to care about them being used by heavy trucks on a daily basis. The Mooketsi route, where an expensive weigh bridge was built, is being ignored and avoided.

Our advice to the department of trans-port is to wake up. There is a lot more than this needing the department’s seri-ous and urgent att ention.

“When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion. When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing. When you see money fl owing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors. When you see that men get richer by graft and pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you. When you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifi ce, you may know that your society is doomed.” — Ayn Rand

There are a couple of things that are for me beyond appalling with the situation at a well-known chain store. Yes, workers at the store recently att empted a protest/strike in an outcry of alleged sexual harassment, amongst other things, by their new manager and the store’s ‘head guard’. Their protest/strike was dismissed for being illegal. The workers were given warnings and expected to return to work, with their alleged sexual harasser.

Is it just me or is there something seriously wrong with our concept of crime and law enforcement? The workers accuse the manager of sexual harassment. They try to make noise and get him to account, but they go about it the wrong way. They perhaps are not aware of the right procedure to make him ac-count. It is now alleged that management focused on whether or not the workers followed the right procedure in reporting the manager and ignores the accusations thereof.

The chain store’s head offi ce, which I contacted to check if it was informed of the matt er, responded to the matt er by asking the manager/the accused about it. Again, is it me or is it obvi-ous that the accused will reply in defence of himself, which he did do of course, and management saw it fi t to dismiss the

case?Apart from management asking the accused if he did what

he is accused of to determine the legitimacy of the accusations, the shop makes its workers work with their alleged sexual harasser, who also happens to be their manager. I think this should qualify for inhumane working conditions or emotional torment. How do you even allow an accused sexual harasser and the accuser to work together, especially when the accused overlooks the work of the accuser?

Who exactly oversees the private sector? Society has, and maybe has always had, a serious problem of privileging some members at the expense of others. The privileged almost always completely get away with nonsense and maintain their privi-lege by stepping on others. We always complain, and rightfully

so, about government ineffi ciencies, but whoever overlooks the private sector? Who makes sure it does not exploit its workers to maintain its wealth? The management in this case is alleged to know its workers need their jobs and regardless of how it treats them, not many will leave.

terugkeer huis toe.

Store manager accused of sexual harassment

• Although Joy’s opinion column is not a news report that has been researched to get behind the truth, the whole truth and noth-ing but the truth, she asked the chain for their comment and Ms Sarita van Wyk, their spokesperson, reacted as follows:

The Shoprite chain views allegations of any improper behaviour towards staff in a serious light and is committ ed to investigate any factually substantiated complaints lodged through its internal chan-nels. Staff of Shoprite Tzaneen enjoys the presence of the deputy chairman of the national bargaining committ ee of the workers union Saccawu as one of their colleagues in the store and they therefore have direct access to channels for lodging any grievance. The infor-mation provided to your publication is not based on fact and is the result of illegal staff protests throughout the course of Thursday, 04 June, following measures instituted in the store to curtail theft from the company as well as the arrest of a number of staff members on charges of theft .

A government grant has enabled Mr Mike Gardner from Haenertsburg to initiate a pro-ject to re-establish a two to three kilometre walk along the Kantoorspruit out-side the village. The Kantoorspruit fl ows into the Broederstroom and then into Ebenezer Dam.

The project is being carried out together with Working for Water. Black watt le, bugweed, bluegum and brambles are being chopped out to restore the indigenous for-est along the oft en steep slopes of the Kantoorspruit. A 150 steps have been cut into the walk and are ready for stabilising.

Years ago the area was used for archery, but has never been established as the now envis-

aged walk along the edge of the village. In-deed it is at the bott om or beginning of the village. Just walk down the main street (Ris-

Limpopo Lowveld’s children love, adore and respect their parents. This is clear from the big number of children who took part in the Bulletin’s competition to honour their fathers, in celebration of Fathers’ Day.

The judges of the compe-tition were impressed, indeed touched by the entrants’ contributions honouring their hero fathers.

Unfortunately many of the entrants did not read the rules of the competition properly and exceeded the maximum of thirty (30) words per entry. The

idea was to motivate children to share their sentiments and pay homage in short messages.

Young Suverijah Liliwala, a Gr 6 pupil of Tzaneen Primary School, staying at 20 Tillana Flats, End Street, Tzaneen, was named the winner by the independent judges. When we nally traced her on Monday with the news that she had won a brand new tablet, she was overcome with joy.

Her parents didn’t know that she had entered for the

competition and she had to explain to

them why she has become the owner of the tablet.

We say well done to all

the children who took part in the competition. To them and indeed all our children we say, keep on watching the Bulletin — we will in the future create more similar opportunities for you to express yourselves and to be rewarded.

Proper ways of securing your home or busi-ness against intruding pests are essential to keep these unwanted elements away. Add thorough sanitation and you will enjoy a pest free environment.

This is the advice of Mr Raymond Rees, an experienced and qualifi ed pest control oper-ator who opened his business, Kill-A-Bug, in Tzaneen recently. It is a pest control company established in 2005 with franchises country wide.

Rees runs a “one man show” at this stage, but is in partnership with Mr Devan Ber-range, who will join the operation soon. They cover a large area between Moria and the Kruger National Park and specialize in controlling termites, ants, cockroaches, ticks, fl ies and rodents.

The company also off ers advice on sanita-tion, pest prevention, weed control, structur-al fumigation, bee removals and the supply of cleaning chemi-cals. Rees invited post-matric people who are unem-ployed to join the company, as they are creating business opportunities in the pest control fi eld.

Other servic-es include gutt er cleaning, pre- and

post-construction ter-mite treatment and the issuing of clear-ance certifi cates. They are also involved in the hunting industry, where hunting prod-ucts are cleared of any pests before export.

As a qualifi ed nature and game manager and also a security offi cer Rees is also a snake handler. He ar-rived in Tzaneen only three months ago, but has been called out to remove snakes at several places. They are released in the Fanie Schoe-man Nature Reserve aft erwards.

Farmers are facing heavy penalties for transporting labourers on open trucks and an exten-sive new set of traffi c rules are to be enforced regarding the transport of labourers. The red LDV on the right was followed for almost three kilometers coming in from the Georges Valley

side, stopping at the new Total to put in petrol and then leaving again towards Letsitele. Coming into town both laboureres were standing on the rear bumper and leaving town the one sat on the rather unstable load,

whilst the other one took his place on the bumper once again. Limpopo is fast becoming the province where it seems to be a free for all and do as you like for motorists (including taxis).

What tra c rules? What danger?

SMITADVISEURS

Dienste Raad (FSB) gereguleer.

Hy is ’n onmiddellike sukses.

nuutgevonde eie-waarde. Hy is skielik in ’n magsposisie.

Waarsêer maak debuut by InniBOS

Rugby sonder grensein uitspeelwedstryde

Oppie KassieOn the Telly

Vossies blink in Limpopo-eindrondes

versigtig vir ‘n man wat so fyn kan korrel!

Page 16: Bulletin 150626

muntend daarin geslaag.‘Tja, dis eintlik ‘n eenvoudige plan, waarvan

daar verskeie eksemplare in omloop is.

“Some people don’t like change, but you need to embrace change if the alternative is disaster.” — Elon Musk

The recently staged Kremetart XCO moun-tain bike race at Hanglip, Louis Trichardt was a huge success. The course is an Olym-pic standard XCO track, which means it is very technical and hard on the legs. Stan-ford Lake College had six riders in the mix and did very well, claiming ve podiums. Lara Dando nished 3rd in the sub junior girls and Casper Venter claimed a 2nd place in the sub junior boys. Matt Wilkinson n-

ished 4th in the youth men category, and deserves a handshake as he was the only person in his age category to style all the A-lines (the most di cult lines) on the course. Anke Vaughan claimed the best po-sition, winning the youth women category. Lachlan Truesdale and Mr Fullard both nished 3rd in their respective categories, junior men and elite men. Seen in the ac-tion is Matt Wilkinson.
