Ready, steady, GO!

Naledi Mailula (2nd princess), Juané Fernandes (1st princess) and Kristie Ba-denhorst (Ms Merensky), and Courtney Schlebush (2nd prince), Rassie Erasmus (1st

prince) en Dylan Oosthuyse (Mr Merensky), are their school’s “Stars” for this year.

Agter is Amu Thuketana (1ste

prinses) en Jara Kruger (2de prinses).

The community of Shawela village, Giyani, has resumed the barricading of the road linking Giyani and Phalaborwa. They demand that speed humps be placed on the road, to prevent motorists from speeding and posing danger to

pedestrians and livestock.

Syferwater is baie lastig daar. ‘n

Nuwe vertoonkamer sal eers oor ‘n paar jaar gebou word.

Sela!

Daar was twee probleme. Die eerste was dat die hele Goudprovinsie blykbaar vir die naweek Noorde toe was, en op pad terug was Suidwaarts. En hulle was v.i. (Vlieg’s Insiens) almal haastig terug.

SA sitrus steeds veilig in Europa

The women also identi ed a vulnerable family where the eldest son is twenty years old, without an ID book and has to care for his family. These women are now interacting with the relevant government departments, to assist the family.

Merensky Hich School’s young scientists bloomed at the Tritech SA held at Merensky. According to statistics, only 2% of pupils participating in the initial round of Tritech will make it through to the fi nal round. That is why it is so exceptional that 39 Merensky pupils could exhibit a total of thirty excellent projects!

Merensky pupils excelled and walked away with thirteen gold awards as well as thirteen category awards of which six were for the best project in the category. Eight pupils re-ceived silver awards and fi ve bronze. Some of the Merensky gold winning projects were:

Ivan Botha’s project “Jy rook! Ek ook!” will discourage any smoker and the project im-pressed the judges. He received gold and best senior: health sciences.

Johnathan and Micaela Ball started a new business with their Re-Tired Tires and pro-vide new hanging feeders for game, catt le, goats as well as containers for fl owers, bird-

feeders etc. They were rewarded with gold and best senior environmental and social sci-ences.

Marlu McLean with her exceptional project, “Gril of kul jou vrugte jou?”; results are go-ing to be published in a scientifi c journal. Pack-houses involved are very excited about her fi ndings and wish to use her results. No wonder she received best junior agricultural

sciences award. Merensky prove their top po-sition in the agricultural fi eld, winning fi ve of the six categories. Other pupils involved were Heinrich and Loamé van Zyl, Anri McLean, Bi-anca Spies and Michelle Stevens.

The brain power sizzled in the category maths science and technology. A high stand-ard of computer programming were shown in the computer programs of all the entries.

“Expression”, programmed by Rean Venter and Claudio Rech, both Gr 12 pupils, focused on a program to help Down Syndrome kids and parents. Watch the winning You Tube video! Daniël Hartman and Jason Spengler was rewarded for their programming. Carissa Ivy’s project on the eff ect of diff erent kinds of bul-lets to be used during the hunting of diff erent kind of animals impressed judges and won best senior maths science and technology.

Riëtt e Warmenhoven was rewarded as the best Junior life science project, with her research on the eff ect of mint on your reaction time. Carmen Nagel was rewarded for her interest-ing research “A...b...c...D... SPINOSAD”.

The best of all is the fact that all the learners, who worked so hard throughout the year, are all equipped with skills which prepare them for life, whether it might be doing research and presenting their fi ndings to expertee in the fi eld and learn public speaking, while they can enjoy being young and energetic.

A successful Gospel evening was held in Tzaneen, aid of the Tzaneen Care Group. Nico de Jager and friends hosted the event. About 220 people from the Tzaneen, Letsitele and Modjadjiskloof communities were in attendance. The event was in aid of raising funds to support the Tzaneen Care Group — a group of ladies who take care of mostly cancer patients. The Tzaneen Care Group is planning on opening a hospice in the near future and the funds raised at this event will be utilized for this purpose, as well as the support of the patients of Tzaneen Care Group. Tzaneen Care Group would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Nico and Susan de Jager, Marli and Jansen, Dirk Venter and each and every member of all the communities who contributed generously to the cause, as well as everyone who attended and made the evening a huge success.Tzaneen Care Group mission:  Serving others, in faith, love and hope.

A dubious agenda What exactly is the GTM’s agenda when they spend large amounts of ratepayers’ money on questionable “special” projects, instead of investing in proper and much needed service delivery?

In their latest extravagant project the GTM’s councillors allowed more than a quarter of a million Rand to be spent on subsidising an agri expo, a mere two weeks aft er the annual Letaba Show.

We smell a rat... A number of things just don’t make sense. Why did they think that the area needs a third agri show in less than one year? Why so shortly aft er the annual established agri show?

Why did they decide to sponsor a show that was organised and staged by a profi t driven Gauteng company whose business it is to organise events?

Are people wrong when they rate the expo as a sort of apartheid gimmick, because it was said to accommodate black farmers? Why couldn’t emerging farmers have taken part in die Letaba Show?

Why did the GTM’s well-staff ed communications department neglect the advertising of the expo so badly that the organisers had to scramble aft er the opening of the event to try and get people to att end?

There are more aspects of the expo to be questioned. The GTM should thus convene a proper post mortem of the event, which strongly resembled a stillbirth.

There is per se nothing wrong in creating opportunities for emerging farmers to showcase their products and for them to be exposed to organised commercial agriculture and what it has to off er.

However, there is no sense in employing commercial entities from Gauteng to do it (for profi t that will leave our province) and it would be much more sensible to join hands with existing structures.

Die volgende og gend was hy `n nuwe mens.

(Luk16:22-25).

Is ek ge red?”

To end off women’s month, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality had what it called a Local Women Empowerment Event on Monday.

The event, according to GTM’s media liaison Mr NevilleNdlala, still fell under women’s month celebrations. It should have taken place in August. However, due to vari-ous other commitments of some of the special guests and speakers, it was postponed a number of times.

Okay, in this case, other than that our local municipality hosted an event to empower local women, but only invited its councillors and directors; I must say, having a male speaker at the event and male coordinators/directors was to me the most surprising/appalling.

This is by no means to judge the credentials of the speaker, his knowledge in what he was speaking about or the con-tent of his speech. I, in fact, did not stay long enough to hear what he had to say, as the event started quite later than was promised and I had to move on with my schedule. It did, however, get me thinking. Is the Greater Tzaneen Munici-pality in serious shortage of women that even for a women’s event it needs men as coordinators, directors and speakers. Is our Greater Tzaneen Municipality area in serious need of professional women in health (the male speaker spoke about women in health) that even for a talk about women it needs a man to speak? Why are we even celebrating wo-men’s day/month? How do we empower women; who should empower women? In democratic society like ours, do we even still need events to empower women?

In South Africa, Women’s month is celebrated to com-memorate the 1956 women from all works of life in the

country marching to the union buildings on the ninth of August.

Although the march was aimed at fi ghting against the ex-tension of pass laws to black women in the country, in a society in which a woman’s place was primarily designated to the domestic environment, and in a struggle where only men fought and made decisions amongst themselves, the march, in my opinion, signifi ed the ability of women to par-ticipate in the political arena and make their voices heard. It signifi ed women’s refusal to have decisions taken on their behalf and it marked women’s autonomy in society.

For this reason, we celebrate and commemorate the wo-men of 1956 who stood up for their right to be heard on issues that aff ect them. For the same reason, I personally believe, we cannot host events to celebrate this women’s autonomy in society and have men speak on their behalf. As feminists, we are oft en branded as men-haters and ac-cused of reversed sexism. However, to say no one can bett er articulate a woman’s experience in a certain sphere, is not to hate men.

According to Ndlala, Dr V Bopape (the male speaker) was called to speak on women’s health because he is gynaecolo-

gist and was the only gynaecologist available for the event. First of all in this case, although he might have a mount of experience in planning events, to show that Mr Ndlala’s views on issues that aff ect women is a bit miss-conceived and insulting, he thought issues relating to women’s health can only be of a gynaecological matt er. Again, not to judge the content of Mr Bopape’s speech as I did sit through it, women’s health surely concerns and is worth more than just gynaecological matt ers.

In a separate celebration of the month, a speaker noted how today our country is one of the most gender-equal countries in the world. The Greater Mopani District alone has three female executive mayors. Women are making their mark in all kinds of societal spheres. Thus, to return to the questions above, are events aimed at empowering women still relevant today? Is sexism still an issue?

To answer these, let me use the following example: if you were to choose between a very masculine man and a very feminine women, both with equal experiences and equal qualifi cations, to hire at your law fi rm, who would you hire? If you say the man, then that is exactly why we need women empowerment programmes and events. In the past few weeks we published articles on rape culture, multitasking and abortion. That we needed to make awareness on such issues shows sexism still exists.

Domestic violence, date violence, rape, sexual assault and assaults on sex-workers are some of the issues in our so-ciety strongly embedded on sexism. Men also experience rape, domestic violence and sexual assault; however, the majority of victims are women.

In a dazzled ceremony held at Hotel@Tzaneen, the women of Van Velden Hospital got together to celebrate Women’s Month. The ceremony, which had Dean Sikhwari of the Lutheran Church and GTM councillor Phangasasa Mkhabele as guest speakers, was the rst of its kind for these women. “We wanted to come together as women, recollect on our identity in society and celebrate the identity thereof,” said Ms Thilly Makwela, one of the organisers. Speaking for the identity of women in Christ, Sikhwari spoke of her experience as one of few women in church leadership and pointed out the marginalisation women often deal with in religious organisations, the workplace and society in general. “As women, we need to stop competing with each other and be a helping hand to one another,” she said. Mkhabele, who spoke for the identity of women in politics, advised women to

cease opportunities available to them and be part of what is going on around them. “With structures that allow women to participate independently in the country, SA is one of the most liberal countries in the world,” she said. The women ared-up the celebration with dances, poetry performances, contests and a lovely meal together. — Joy Mojela

snuisterye verwelkom.

The girls of Letaba Combined School in Nkowankowa were showered with sanitary care products by Komatiland Forests. In celebration of Women’s Month, Komatiland (state owned), together with Safcol, ran a dignity drive pro-gramme in various rural areas, to answer to the call for the restoration of girls’ dignity during their menstrual periods.

The drive, in support of the Keep a Girl Child in School campaign, aimed to raise awareness of the many girls, especially in rural areas, missing out on school during their menstrual periods due to a lack of sanitary care products.

On Friday, Komatiland Forests handed out san-itary towels, diapers, deodorants and bath towels to female pupils over the age of ten years at the Letaba Combined School.

“As one of a very few schools for the disabled in the area, and also remote, we saw it fi t to come and run the drive at the Letaba School to show

love to our disabled sisters and help them em-brace their femininity,” said Ms Hazel Banda, Komatiland’s social development manager.

Sanitary towels should, however, not be the only problem drives like these care about, as a lack of sanitary care products is not the only thing keeping girls from school during their menstru-

al periods. According to dr Jackson Ndhlovu, a local gynaecologist, many girls and women suf-fer from severe cramps during their periods. The cramps, called primary dysmenorrhoea, can be very disruptive to one’s daily routine.

“Although pain killers are oft en the fi rst choice of treatment for most women, birth control — which is free at state hospitals — is the best option in regulating periods and dealing with pain,” said Ndhlovu.

In relation to girls skipping school because of menstrual cramps, Komatiland’ communication offi cer, Ms Nokuthula Makaringe, said the com-pany had not thought about it. “This is the fi rst time we run the drive. We will put more thought into it next time,” she said. At the same time, Makaringe also noted that giving out pills to girls in schools is not legal.

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality never received reports on its construction of a sports and play ground in Nkowankowa’s Section C causing houses next to the area to be ruined, according to GTM communications offi cer Puseletso Ramothwala.Bulletin made

inquiries aft er Ms Meriam Raophala, who says she resides right next to the sports and play ground, told us that she is at her wits’ end aft er her house suff ered serious cracks due to the contractor’s use of heavy vibrating machines while constructing the sports and play ground.

“The vibrators must have stirred up the foundation of our houses and caused them to disintegrate,” said Raophala, who explains that, although other houses in the surrounding area have also been aff ected by the construction, her house is the most disrupted as she lives right next-door to the sports and play ground.

The 41-year-old widowed mother of fi ve says she fi rst reported the matt er to the GTM municipal manager’s offi ce on 15 April. “At the offi ce, a Mr Shai was told to write a report to the CEO of the construction company, but nothing

happened aft erwards,” she says.

Dismayed, Raophala, proceeded to the mayor’s offi ce to report her case. However, she was always told the mayor is busy whenever she got to her offi ce.

With her house seriously falling apart and becoming unsafe for her and her family

to live in, Raophala wrote to the premier’s offi ce to report both the matt er and her failure to receive an active response from the GTM, but she again failed to receive a reply.

The construction company goes by the name ‘Millan Sythentic’ and is allegedly paid an amount of R4 228 174 for the construction of the sports and play ground.

Huishoudings, fabrieke, pakhuise, winkels, werkswinkels, kantore...

Please say yes to organ donation. Many families said yes and saved the lives of moth-ers, children and fathers. Your child might need a life-saving transplant one day. If we are not prepared to be organ donors, is it fair for us to ask for a life-saving organ transplant if we need one from someone else?

It is possible that a medical professional might ask you to consider organ donation. Your deci-sion will make a life-saving difference. Please say yes to organ donation.

Langasems oes goud by kampioenskappe...

Black Leopards collected their fi rst point of the season by holding Jomo Cosmos to a 1-1 draw in their National First Division League match on Sunday.

The result is not a true refl ection of the game, as Lidoda Duvha were by far the bett er side when it came to ball possession throughout the game. Leopards squandered numerous obvious scoring chances before they fi nally found the net via Leonard Ntshangase in the 19 th minute. Cosmos fought back through Edwin Serakalala seven minutes before the fi nal whistle.

Witbank Spurs gave their fans their money’s worth by crushing Cape Town All Stars 2-0; Vasco da Gama gave Royal Eagles no chance and beat them 1-0; Baroka shared the glory with Thanda Royal Zulu, following their goalless draw.

African Warriors played to a 1-1 draw

with FC Cape Town and aft er beating Black Leopards 1-0 at the Thohoyandou Stadium two weeks ago, Lamontville Golden Arrows played to a goalless draw with Milano United FC.

Santos registered a 3-2 victory at the expense of Maluti FET College. Santos were two goals ahead when the teams adjourned for half time. Garankuwa United collected full points by beating the newly promoted Highlandspark . That was the fi rst victory for Garankuwa United.— LiN Media News/

Limpopo Mirror

Four senior Zanis Rhythmic Gymnasts competed in Pretoria for a place in the Limpopo Team last week — and did extremely well.

The gymnasts who stood out at the Limpopo Trials are seen in this picture: Willem de Bruyn (rhythmic coach), Ezri Hugo (Level 5 gymnast: fi rst place rope, fi rst place ribbon, fi rst place clubs, fi rst place free dance and overall Limpopo winner), Anisa Verster (Level 4 gymnast: third place rope, third place ball, second place hoop, third place free dance and overall third in Limpopo), Desire de Jager (Level 4 gymnast: fi rst place rope, fi rst place ball, fi rst place hoop, fi rst place free dance and overall Limpopo winner), Zandri

van der Gryp (Level 4 gymnast: fi rst place rope, fi rst place ball, fi rst place hoop, fi rst place free dance and overall Limpopo winner) and Erika de Jager (rhythmic judge).

The SA Gym Games 2014 will be held in the Western Cape, during early October. Ezri, Desire and Zandri have been selected to represent Limpopo at the Games.

Zanis Gymnastics Academy Tzaneen plan to use all of their experience, ability and knowledge they have gained over the year in order to propel their dedicated and committ ed gymnasts to the very top.

For enquiries regarding classes, contact Willem de Bruyn on 076 030 009.

Diederik Oberholzser.

Six Stanford Lake College hockey players have been awarded colours. Seen here are Channel du Plessis (full), Cassie Hawken (half), Sphiwe Dlamini (full), Kristen Tomes (half), Marli Maree (full), and Makungu

Valoyi (half).

Four of Merensky High School’s rugby hunks have been selected to play in the upcoming Bokkie Week during October: Dyllan J van Rensburg, Jacques Costen, Marno van Wyk and Tertius Kruger (who was absent when the

photos were taken).

So het

“The opposite for courage is not cowardice, it is conformity. Even a dead fi sh can go with the fl ow.” — Jim Hightower
