Sunday of Ordinary Time- A

Speaking in Parables

In the Gospel Reading, Christ explains why he speaks in parables to the

crowds. The knowledge of these things has been granted to you, Christ tells

his disciples, but it hasn’t been granted to them. But if God can give the gift

of knowledge, why wouldn’t he give it to everyone? Why would a loving

God hide knowledge from some people? To see the answer, think about gifts.

If you give a gift to someone you love, then what you give is intended to do

that person good. It isn’t a gift if you know it will harm him or hurt him.

And here it is important to see that not all knowledge is beneficial. There is

knowledge which can hurt a person rather than help him if he isn’t ready to

receive it. Good counselors are skilled in knowing the times when their

clients are able to bear some knowledge, some insight into their situation and

themselves. Till their clients are ready, good counselors hesitate to impart

such insight for fear of making their clients worse, rather than better, with it.

To force knowledge on a person not ready to see it is stupid or cruel or both.

It isn’t loving. And that is why Christ speaks in parables. Among those who

come to him, there are some people who want to hear him but are not

willing to be counted among his disciples, at least not yet. Christ’s parables

give those people what they can receive, given that they are not yet ready to

receive him. They can learn something from the parables even so. But to

those who come to Christ ready to receive him and willing to be counted as

his disciples, he can give the gift of knowledge straightforwardly. In

receiving him, those people are also ready to receive the knowledge Christ

can give. And here it is worth noticing that Christ speaks in parables to

everybody who comes to him. But some people care enough about him and

his words to want more than they can get from those parables alone. They

take him as their teacher and want to learn from him. That is why they come

to him to ask him to explain the parables he was telling them as well as all

the others. The people who want more understanding are the very ones who

count as his disciples. To them who have more, as Christ says, more will be

given, because they want more.

International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Very soon, the Archbishop will send you a letter about the International Military Pilgrimage (PMI) to Lourdes, to

encourage your support and participation, which will also published on the special website for the same pilgrimage.

However, he does wish to avoid any confusion about this pilgrimage sponsored only by the AMS and the Knights of

Columbus. Should you receive any request to solicit volunteers, funds, or priests on the part of the North American

Lourdes Volunteers (NALV), please refuse to do so and inform the Archbishop immediately of the request. This group

has repeatedly failed to co-operate with the AMS, has embarrassed the image of the United States among the organizers

of the PMI, and, in general, has persisted in employing and sponsoring one model of Lourdes visit—theirs.

Last year, the Archbishop did obtain a grant for the NALV to help the AMS bring wounded warriors on the pilgrimage.

The collaboration was non-existent, and he has been forced to abandon any similar attempts in the future. The Knights

have been able to draw on the long experience of the Knights of Malta, in addition to the “trial run” last year. They are

already far along in their preparations for this year’s PMI.

.

.

I AM GLAD YOU ASKED!

(Send all your questions to: [email protected] )

Q. How do we sanctify the Lord's Day (Sunday and holy days)?

A. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church'

Sanctifying Sundays and holy days requires a common effort. Every Christian should avoid

making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord’s Day.

Traditional activities (sport, restaurants, etc.), and social necessities (public services, etc.),

require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside

sufficient time for leisure. With temperance and charity the faithful will see to it that they avoid

the excesses and violence sometimes associated with popular leisure activities. In spite of

economic constraints, public authorities should ensure citizens a time intended for rest and divine

worship. Employers have a similar obligation toward their employees. (CCC 2187)

See also CCC 2184-2186.

John Paul II’s apostolic letter Dies Domini states:

Through Sunday rest, daily concerns and tasks can find their proper perspective: the material

things about which we worry give way to spiritual values; in a moment of encounter and less

pressured exchange, we see the true face of the people with whom we live. Even the beauties of

nature—too often marred by the desire to exploit, which turns against man himself—can be

rediscovered and enjoyed to the full . . . In any case, [Christians] are obliged in conscience to

arrange their Sunday rest in a way which allows them to take part in the Eucharist, refraining

from work and activities which are incompatible with the sanctification of the Lord’s Day, with

its characteristic joy and necessary rest for spirit and body.

In order that rest may not degenerate into emptiness or boredom, it must offer spiritual

enrichment, greater freedom, opportunities for contemplation and fraternal communion.

Therefore, among the forms of culture and entertainment which society offers, the faithful should

choose those which are most in keeping with a life lived in obedience to the precepts of the

Gospel.

Sunday should also give the faithful an opportunity to devote themselves to works of mercy,

charity and apostolate. (DD 67-69)
