Let’s celebrate the beauty of eyeglasses! Did you know? 1. Despite the fact they are commonly known as “glasses”, most spectacle lenses today are actually made of plastic. This is to prevent breaking and to make them lighter in weight. 2. Around 25% of the world’s population actually requires spectacles in some format. 3. It may seem silly, but years ago sailors actually believed that wearing a golden earring as opposed to a pair of glasses would help improve their eyesight. Perhaps that’s why pirates are often depicted as wearing them?! 4. Contrary to the common story that reading in dim light is harmful to your eyes, this is actually incorrect. Good lighting does make reading easier and can reduce eye tiredness, but reducing lighting won’t damage your eyesight. 5. Another common theory is that wearing glasses will then cause you to become dependent on them – however, this is not the case as the feeling you get is just your eyes getting used to seeing clearly. http://www.yatesandsuddell.co.uk/blog/top-5-interesting- facts-about-glasses/

Wear Your Eyeglasses to School Day Thursday, October 16th is “Wear Your Eyeglasses to School Day” If you have them, wear them!

3. From your PTA…

Box Tops for Education We hope you have continued to clip those little pink Box Top Labels! Now is the time to start pulling them together and sending them in. We will be collecting bags thru Friday, October 10th before announcing winners for the most Box Tops collected. Please make sure your child's name and grade are on the bag before you turn them in. If you have more than one child and wish to send them as a family, be sure to put all of your children's names on the bag and their grades, but we will award only 1 prize to the family.

Holiday Bazaar

The Forest Ridge PTA will be hosting a Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 15th. We are currently looking for crafters, vendors, local , and groups that would like to have a booth. The cost for a booth is $20 plus a donation item for our raffle. If you are interested in having a booth, please contact Amanda Fields at [email protected] for a contract & more information. All contracts & payments need to requested and returned by October 20. It’s on a first come first serve basis!

Media Help Needed

We are happy to have so many eager readers at Bollman Bridge! The media center could use help re-shelving books as they are turned back in. Please drop by the media center any time you have a few free moments to help or contact Ms. Polan at [email protected] with your availability.

5th Grade Assistance Needed

The 5th grade team has sets of math games that need to be assembled -- this can be done at school or at home at your convenience! Please drop by the 5th grade pod or contact Ms.Holtzclaw at [email protected] if you can help! Ms. Holtzclaw will also need a parent to help prepare materials for 5th grade science each quarter (next needed during the first or second week in November).

Get Excited for the Battle of the Books!

Any parents of 5th graders who are interested in competing in the April 10th Battle of the Books (sponsored by the Howard County Library System) should plan on attending the meeting at the Miller Branch Library on Tuesday 10/21 at 7pm. For more information, please visit the library website

Howard County Candidates Forum at BBES

Please mark your calendar now for Wednesday 10/15 at 6pm, when a candidates forum will be held in the Bollman Bridge cafeteria, giving citizens the opportunity to hear in person from candidates running for public office this November -- Howard County Board of Education, County Council, County Executive, State Delegate, and State Senate. Volunteers are needed for this event, as well as PTA members who would like to join a core group in a larger effort to jointly work with other North Laurel/Savage PTAs. Also, questions for candidates are welcome to be submitted in advance to [email protected], particularly those that specifically pertain to southeast Howard County and our school system. Your vote counts, so choose wisely!

Did you know that October is National Bullying Prevention month? Mark your calendar now and make plans to wear orange on Unity Day. That’s when people around the country will join the movement to “Make  it  Orange  and  Make  it  End!” In 2011, Ellen DeGeneres promoted the cause on television by wearing orange and reminding millions of viewers about the importance of bullying prevention. Plan on wearing orange on

Wednesday, October 22nd to show your support!

This month, BBES is taking the Bully-Free Pledge:

I promise not to bully. I promise to help those who are bullied.

I promise to respect others and to treat other people as I would like to be treated. I promise not to hit others, exclude others, or call others mean names.

I promise to use the STAR steps to deal with bullies: Stick Together!

Tell the bully to stop. Alert an adult at school or home.

Respect others and treat them the way you would like to be treated.

Let’s Go HoCo! The first annual 5K for HCPSS is this Sunday,October 12, at 8 am. Go to http://www.hcpss5k.com/ to sign up. One hundred percent of the race’s profits will go to the school system’s Pupil Personnel Worker Fund, providing assistance for children and families in need.

Many BBES staff and family members have already signed up. Wear blue, red, or PTA spirit wear to show your BBES pride. Meet Shannon Biggs at the Columbia Mall parking lot by Nordstrom’s between 7:15 and 7:30 am. Shannon will have a BBES sign in the parking lot. We will walk over to the start at 7:30 am.
