China dominates global dyestuffs industry Statistics can be misleading unless the parameters are clearly defined. This is particularly true in the case of statistics on China. In a recent news item in the Chinese trade press, it was stated that China’s organic dyes and pigments production increased by 7.4% in 2005 to 797,000 tonnes. On closer inspection, it transpires that the figure of 797,000 tonnes actually relates only to production data reported by members of the China Dyestuff Industry Association (CDIA). The country’s total organic dyes and pigments production was more like 1.2 M tonnes in 2005. (See also ‘Focus on Pigments’, Apr 2006, 2). Certainly Chinese suppliers have come to dominate the world dyestuffs industry. US production of dyes has dwindled to very low levels. Europe’s contribution to the global dyestuffs industry nowadays essentially consists of a few high-performance colorants. At the ChemSpec exhibition for fine and speciality chemicals, held in Geneva in June this year, about half of the 400 exhibitors were Chinese companies. This represented the completion of a $2 M project for site preparation and mine development. The Doirantsi deposit is estimated to contain 10 M tonnes of kaolin, but no details have been revealed on the anticipated scale of production. Meanwhile, the company has also completed a $3.3 M project to mine and process foundry sands in the Devnya district. Total output of processed foundry sands is about 300,000 tonnes/y – all of which is destined for the Drujba and Stind glass factories operated by the Yioula group (based in Greece). Local residents and fishermen have protested about this for many years and at times they have blocked the effluent pipeline, forcing TTP to temporarily suspend pigment production. In May 1995, the Kerala Ministry of Health served a “notice of closure” on the TTP plant. But, a “stay of execution” was granted when the company promised to improve pollution control measures. Ten years later, the Kerala Government approved TTP’s plans to double pigment capacity to 30,000 tonnes/y at the same time as installing a waste acid recycling unit and establishing a dedicated on-land site for dumping solid wastes. The deadline for installing the acid recycling unit was 26 April 2006. Just three months away from the deadline, TTP had not even awarded an engineering contract for the project. The company therefore applied to the High Court for the deadline to be waived. The application was duly granted, but it seems that TTP will now be obliged to install the necessary pollution control measures before – rather than at the same time as – its pigment capacity expansion project Chemical Business (India), May 2006, 20 (5), 23-24 & TiO 2 Worldwide Update, Mar/Apr 2006, 14 (2), 17-18 Poland: PolyOne – plastics masterbatch PolyOne is building a plant at Kutno (in the Lodz region of central Poland) for the manufacture of colour masterbatches.
