Back in 1953 Dr. Milton Kaiser of New Ulm first proposed the idea of a retirement home at Methodist Men’s Retreat at Lake Shetek. An eight-man committee was appointed to investigate the possibilities of building a Methodist Home for the aged somewhere in the southwest district. From the information gathered from the committee members, it was evident that a need existed for a retirement home. This began the proceedings to start a mission of the Methodist Churches in the SW District. Ministers and representatives of the SW District met at Lamberton Methodist Church for

the purpose of incorporating the SW District Home. Reverend John Gresham was the District Superintendent presiding at the meeting.Communities interested in having this Home located in their community were invited to

submit their names to the Board. In 1958, the SW District Conference met in Jackson with 180 present. The District Committee on Finance made the proposal to raise $240,000 or $80,000 a year for three years. The campaign was completed in 1962 for raising the funds. The committee for Sites for the SW District Methodist Home for Older Persons received

14 requests for possible locations of the facility. The towns were Springfield, Sleepy Eye, Tracy, Lamberton, Slayton, Marshall, Windom, St. James, Sherburn, Fairmont, Le Center, Amboy, Winnebago, and Blue Earth. After months of deliberation, it was agreed to narrow the site selection options down to two sites, Fairmont and Marshall. In 1959 at a Corporate meeting with 81 laymen and ministers met to cast their vote for the location of the SW District Home for older persons. The results were 43 for Fairmont site, 35 for Marshall, and 3 spoiled votes. A motion was made to acquire 20 acres of land in Fairmont not to exceed $30,000.The District Superintendent Rev. John Gresham, made the following statement: “We wish to commend our lay

persons and ministers for the fine spirit at the St. James meeting and call upon all of our churches to support regular quarterly giving in support of the SW District Home of Older Persons.” Plans to construct the Home included a multi-storied structure of 108 beds at a cost of $1,000,000. Nothing

could be done until half of the construction costs were raised. In 1962 construction began with the leveling of land and physical construction was to be completed by May 1964. In June of 1964, the first resident, Mary Hill, was admitted to the home.

When you decide to include Lakeview Health Services in your planning, it may be helpful for you to visit with Lakeview’s Health Services Foundation Director. Our director can answer questions you may have regarding our ministry and how your charitable gift will be used. She can also provide you with helpful information that you can take with you to your attorney or financial advisor.

    Named OutstandingDisability Employer

For 2020BY MINNESOTA ORGANIZATIONFOR HABILITATION ANDREHABILITATION

Lakeview Methodist Health Services utilizes STEP, Inc. to support eight employees in many job roles, recognized by state organization.

Employees with disabilities at Lakeview Methodist Health Services, a long-term care facility in Fairmont, had to step up their efforts when COVID-19 hit. Some months into it, the service provider which supports these individuals nominated the facility for a state level award, and it won.

Lakeview Health was recognized as an Outstanding Disability Employer by the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation, MOHR, as part of National Disability Employment Awareness month in October. The award was presented to Lakeview Health Services on Monday, November 16 as part of a small ceremony following Covid 19 guidelines.

“Employers like Lakeview Health tap into the great talent pool and give people with disabilities an opportunity;” said Julie Johnson, president of MOHR. “Organizations will be stronger if they

hire these talented and dedicated people. They will quickly see the benefits of an inclusive workforce:” MOHR represents more than 100 disability service providers across the state. The business was nominated by STEP, Inc., a disability service provider and MOHR member which assists people to find and maintain jobs. “The biggest responsibility for our job coaches is to set up the employee for success, not to fail,” said Dominique Berg, employment service manager for STEP.

The nonprofit supports eight individual who were hired directly by Lakeview Health, customizing their approach to each person’s needs. The long-term care staff work in laundry, food service and custodial operations.

Lakeview Health Food Service Director Dru Egeness said the relationship with STEP began about 15 years ago when the non profit sent a person to train in the care facility’s kitchen. Egeness was “overjoyed” to make the hire. Individuals from STEP work alongside other staff to complete the work. “It is so great that for the clients I hire with some challenges, STEP provides a coach,” she said. Berg said cooperation and communication with

Lakeview have been strong, and important to the success of each employee. Support levels are flexible as STEP can either ramp up or pull back depending on the response from Lakeview and the individual employee. “We never ‘stop and drop off an employee:” said Berg. “We are always there in one capacity or another.”

Lakeview Health pays good wages for good employees, the employment service manager said. And, all of the employees are respectful toward the residents. Work hours have increased for some, and that financial growth and added work history to each individual, he explains. “I see confidence, happiness and a sense of accomplishment in many of the employees,” he said.

There are additional benefits, as well. “I just had a client tell me the other day that he has been at Lakeview for one year, and he was smiling ear to ear!” said Egeness. “Thanks again for the award, and it is my pleasure to have these individuals work for us.”

Johnson said employers help people with disabilities to pursue their goals, earn decent wages and contribute to the economy as part of their communities. “Supporting people to live in a

community connected life is a large part of what MOHR providers do for the people they support.”

The commitment of staff supported by STEP at Lakeview Health was tested with the COVID-19 situation as the employer’s needs grew. People worked mornings, nights and weekends to keep things running, said Berg, who highlighted their commitment. Each was considered “essential,” and Berg said they assisted others using their gifts and talent.

MOHR’s mission is to advocate and support its nonprofit members in providing meaningful services to persons with disabilities and communities served. Members are committed to respect for each individual, a person centered approach and expanding work opportunities.

Celebrated every October, this year’s theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month was “lncreasing Access and Opportunity:’ It celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents. The national observance began under a different name in 1945.
