An initiative born from recognition that the education system faces crisis

Improved access

• The government’s school construction drive has meant 94% of children are now within 1 km of a primary school.

• Teacher attendance has improved, with on average 87% of teachers attending their school in 2007.

• Student attendance has also improved, with on average 75% of enrolled children attending school in 2007. Un-enrolled children accounted for only 4.2% of the total number in 2007.

But learning quality remains poor:

•11 crore school-aged children are illiterate; they cannot read a paragraph of text in their mother tongue.

•Average achievement in Maths is 30/100 in grade 8.

•Average achievement in Science is 36/100 in grade 8.

Thus children are being deprived of an education:

•Of the total number of illiterate children, 5.5 crore will drop out of school after only 4 years.

•Only 40% of relevant age children complete secondary education.
