Our capability in bored pile construction covers piles from 400mm to 6000mm diameter to depths in excess of 60m. We operate Australia’s largest fleet of Bauer Maschinen (BG) rotary track mounted drill rigs along with several Mait rotary drill rigs. We also have a variety of crane-mounted rigs and specialised short mast rigs. This equipment gives us the capability to drill vertical, under and over raked shafts.

Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) Piling is a fast, economical, low noise and vibration free piling technique which is suited to a wide variety of ground conditions.

CFA piles can be used for heavy foundations, secant, contiguous or soldier pile wall applications. CFA piles range from 450mm to 1200mm diameter and drill depths up to 30m are possible.

Good quality CFA pile construction requires an experienced team to ensure that ground conditions are fully understood and that concrete mix design, as well as reinforcement detailing, is appropriately specified.

Powerful rigs, assisted by computerised instrumentation are needed to ensure correct construction procedure. Piling Contractors has the experience and equipment to ensure high quality CFA pile construction.

Displacement Columns, often called “rigid inclusions”, work on a similar principle to CFA piles and offer an economical solution for road or railway embankments. The main difference from CFA construction is that the soil is displaced rather than replaced, and hence minimal spoil is produced during pile construction.

During the drilling process the ground is displaced laterally by a specially designed and patented auger. This compacts the soil, generally improving the skin friction of the pile.

Concrete placement and reinforcement cage installation are similar to CFA piles. Typical diameters are 360mm, 450mm and 520mm. Pile lengths up to 30m are possible.

Piling Contractors installs driven steel tubular piles up to 1500mm diameter, 50m single lengths and 1 in 3 rakes using a range of leaders, some fitted with GPS to provide good accuracy and position control.

We operate driven piling machines ranging from 60t up to 160t rigs such as the LRB-400 rigs with 45m long leaders that can install piles on 1 in 3 over-rakes and 1 in 3 under-rakes using up to 16t piling hammers.

We also drive piles with rope suspended hammers and flying leaders in which our 9t, 12t and 16t hammers are mounted.

The flying leader allows the hammer to work independent of the crane and hence can drive piles into locations a fixed leader cannot access.

Piling Contractors installs driven sheet piles up to 25m in length and weighing up to 5t. Sheet pile installation rigs including purpose built RG16, RG19 and LRB255 piling rigs with telescopic leaders allowing the piling rig to pitch and vibrate piles to refusal. We also use ICE 44-50 and PTC 120D vibrators for steel pile installation including H pile, UB and column sections.

Piling Contractors has designed and fabricated over 500m of falsework systems to carry cranes and piling rigs up to 280t.

Using falsework to install permanent piles has the following advantages:

• Reduced disruption to port or river traffic • Minimises additional vessel movements for the structure’s construction • Provides the ability to operate independent of tides and sea states • Work on several fronts concurrently • Ease of access for following trades • Piling in difficult ground conditions is better suited to “land- based” plant operated off falsework • Short lead time to mobilise

We have recently developed a hydraulic operated rotating marine leader which can traverse in all directions on a grid arrangement and rotate 360 degrees to pick up any pile on any rake within a defined area. This leader was used on our 300t falsework for a recent Port Berth extension to install 50m long 900mm 1 in 3 raking piles on a 12 x 14m grid.

Piling Contractors operates a modular barge with attendant service boats allowing us to work in river or near shore. We install driven steel tubes, sheets and bored piles using these access means, hired barges or client provided access.

A retaining wall is a structure designed and constructed to retain and resist lateral pressure of soil when there is a desired change in ground elevation.

Piling Contractors constructs many types of retaining wall including concrete or steel piled walls and diaphragm walls. We also offer non structural slurry walls used to control migration of in ground liquids or gases.

Diaphragm walling is the in-situ construction of vertical walls by means of deep trench excavations. Stability of the excavation is maintained by the use of a bentonite or polymer mud which balances the external water pressures. Excavation is carried out by rope-suspended, mechanical or hydraulic grabs, or for hard rock excavation a hydraulic cutter is used.

Wall thicknesses range from 500mm to 1500mm and excavation depths of 50m or more are common. Construction joints include a waterstop providing a water retaining structure.

Bored, CFA and steel pile retaining walls are constructed using the techniques described on earlier pages.
