Building Partnerships
2017 The 5th AnnualMNPHA Conference
Welcome to 'Building Partnerships', Manitoba’s annual non-profit housing conference
The Manitoba Non-Profit Housing Association (MNPHA) is proud to be your host and we are excited to have you participate in Manitoba’s largest affordable housing conference with delegates from across the province.
It has been a big year for the non-profit housing sector. With the announcement of the new National Housing Strategy, we have a real opportunity to increase access to safe, quality and affordable housing for Manitobans.
To make the most of this opportunity, MNPHA takes its role in helping to strengthen the sustainability and viability of non-profit housing providers in Manitoba seriously. We see that our members will need to be open to the possibilities of building partnerships and collaborations that will strengthen our ability to deliver on our mandate, and this conference is a great place to start!
Bringing everyone together offers us all the opportunity to be engaged and energized around our common work of ensuring Manitoba’s non-profit housing sector thrives. The conference offers two inspiring keynotes, a plenary around the National Housing Strategy, sixteen education sessions, the popular Mayor’s Forum, the Spirit of Housing Awards, the annual trade show and more. Perhaps most importantly, there are plenty of opportunities to mingle and network with your peers in the sector. We hope that you use every minute of the conference to learn, to network and to look to the future with hope and inspiration.
Thank you for attending the 'Building Partnerships' Conference. Your partnership and support of MNPHA is appreciated!

Mayor’s MessageIt is my pleasure to welcome everyone attending the 2017 Manitoba Non-Profit Housing Association Building Partnerships Conference. I hope you will enjoy the networking and learning opportunities.
One of the highlights of the Conference will surely be your Keynote Speaker, Tim Hague Sr. with his talk focusing on the themes of simplicity, contentment, community, and perseverance. I’m sure you will identify with his message and look for ways to incorporate these ideas into your lives as housing advocates working to build a thriving, sustainable non-profit housing sector in Manitoba. I think you can expect plenty of thought-provoking presentations and other moments of inspiration throughout the Conference along with discussions that will effect meaningful change.
On behalf of the City of Winnipeg and my City Council colleagues, I would like to recognize and thank the volunteers and organizers whose work makes this great Conference possible. Best wishes to everyone for an informative and enjoyable time at the many great sessions and the Spirit of Housing awards.
MAYOR BRIAN BOWMANCity of Winnipeg
Minister's GreetingsIt is with pleasure that I welcome delegates and participants to the fifth annual Manitoba Non-Profit Housing Association (MNPHA) conference.
On behalf of my colleagues in the Manitoba legislature, I wish to acknowledge the tireless efforts
of the volunteer Boards and staff members who work together to provide safe and affordable housing to thousands of families and seniors across our province. Housing is a vital part of the foundation for the health of our communities and is one of the economic drivers that will help us along the path to being Canada's most improved province.
As we gather over the next few days to learn, network and collaborate, I am confident that the fellow members of MNPHA will demonstrate the creativity needed to find the solutions to the many challenges we collectively face.
Best wishes, and enjoy the conference.

Drawing on his experience as the winner of the inaugural season of The Amazing Race Canada, Tim weaves a story of failure and success that moves his audience. You will relive the magic of television and be lost in the wonder of storytelling as Tim recounts his adventures from The Race. Tim takes his audience on a very personal journey through his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease at the early age of 46.
You will experience the sense of loss and fear that comes from this diagnosis but more importantly the hope and the determination to persevere. You will be left empowered to do more than you ever thought you could. You will come away with a truer sense of what real strength and courage is. Gain a better understanding of how to face life’s challenges and succeed through Tim’s story!
Shaun Loney’s 'An Army of Problem Solvers' offers good news at a time when we need it most. Loney draws on his experience as one of Canada’s leading social enterprise developers and his time as a senior civil servant to offer up a new and practical vision.
Just who are the problem solvers? Loney makes the case that social enterprises, social entrepreneurs and the small farm movement comprise the
“solutions economy.” Governments will soon understand that it is their job to make it easy for problem solvers. Shaun will inspire and challenge non-profit housing providers to be part of the ‘army of problem solvers.’

Mental Health:Recovery and Support in a Housing Setting
10:45 a.m.
When individuals live with mental illness, they may be struggling to find support and cope with life’s challenges effectively. We want them to know that they are not alone, that there is ample cause for hope and that they can take practical steps to recover their lives.
In this session participants will learn the difference between mental health and mental illness and will gain an understanding of how to recognize signs that someone is struggling with mental health concerns. Tips, tools and resources to provide supports to those struggling will be explored.

The Future of Workplace Safety:Change the Way You Look at Things and the Things You Look at Change
10:45 a.m.
Today, enlightened organizations recognize that workplace safety is one of the ways their true values are expressed. They “do workplace safety” not because they have to, but because it’s the right thing to do. As a result, their safety management systems are easier to implement and maintain while being more effective to boot!
We’ll discuss the essential WHY, HOW and WHAT you need to know to make your workplace safety management meaningful and effective.

Financing Capital Projects
10:45 a.m.
Acquiring, growing and maintaining assets often require access to capital of many different forms including earned revenue, grants, forgivable loans, government programs or traditional debt. With the uncertainty of external public funding and limited surplus generated after expenses to internal fund reserves, housing providers need to understand financing options available to them in preserving housing stock. This workshop will focus on debt capital and will highlight options available from traditional lenders.

IN MEMORIAM
The non-profit housing sector lost two good friends in 2017. MNPHA remembers these individuals with gratitude for their support of the affordable housing sector in general, and of our organization in particular.
David Golub
David Golub was an associate with Levene Tadman Golub Law Corporation who practiced in the areas of commercial, real estate development and mortgage sale and foreclosure law. He was extensively involved in community development related to affordable housing and spent many volunteer hours dedicated to housing in Winnipeg’s North End. David was also a generous sponsor and supporter of MNPHA and our annual Conference. MNPHA is most grateful for his friendship and his partnership to our sector.
Shirley Tillett
Shirley Tillett, founder of Shirley Tillett and Associates (STA), successfully operated her event planning and training company for over 20 years. She also founded the Event Professionals of Manitoba Association (EPM). MNPHA was the recipient of her expertise when she managed MNPHA’s first four conferences and when she filled in to keep our administration going in the times between executive directors. Shirley’s professionalism and service to MNPHA was and continues to be appreciated.
