India’s historic rise as one of the world’s major economic powers has brought to the forefront the challenge of ensuring that the benefits of growth and prosperity are shared by all. I believe that business and industry have a key role in bridging the rural-urban and urban-urban divides to ensure the inclusive growth and empowerment of the disadvantaged sections of society. I also believe that the increasing awareness of the social responsibilities of the corporate sector need to be taken a step further by undertaking dedicated, mission-mode philanthropic activities in a targeted and result-oriented manner in order to make a lasting difference.

This has been the core philosophy behind the establishment of DLF Foundation, which aims at evolving innovative and action based solutions to help underserved sections of the society to fulfill their unrealised aspirations for a better life. DLF Foundation has initiated a series of interventions in

the areas of healthcare, education, employment linked skill development, talent nurturing, labour welfare programmes, environmental sustainability, rural infrastructure development and extending financial support to other social initiatives.

DLF, right from its inception, through its CSR activities, is reinforcing the company’s

commitment towards creating value to the society, to create sustainable economies and transform stagnant lives into active partnerships through proactive handholding and nurturing of trusted relationships.

The philanthropic and social responsibility initiatives of DLF date back to the early days of its formation. Chaudhary Raghvendra Singh, founder of DLF, established a number of charity funds and donated passionately towards the cause of war widows, orphans and the poor. Education as a subject was very close to his heart and he supported underprivileged children in realising their educational dreams. He started many charitable trusts for advancing the cause of health and education and initiated projects to serve the marginalised.

The birth of DLF Foundation in June 2008 has given these initiatives a focused approach towards the noble goal of building lives. By functioning as a catalyst for accelerating the pace of socio-economic transformation across communities, DLF has integrated social responsibility into its business strategy and conduct, and the establishment of DLF Foundation reinforces this commitment.

Under the direct patronage of DLF Chairman, Padma Bhushan, Mr. K.P. Singh, the Foundation believes in ‘Building India’ from the grass roots by fostering innovative strategies in the fields of Education, Employment Linked Skill Development, Healthcare, Infrastructure Development, Community Development, Labour Welfare and Environmental Sustainability.

The philosophy of DLF is “to conduct business with highest ethical standards for the growth and prosperity of all stakeholders.”

DLF Foundation is committed to creating sustainable economies by transforming lives through proactive partnerships and nurturing trusted relationships. The guiding principles of DLF Foundation thus include serving the downtrodden, marginalised and underprivileged; addressing the felt need of communities; seeking people’s participation; positively utilising DLF’s core competencies and developing replicable and self sustainable models.

DLF Foundation has launched a major flagship initiative with the aim to skill and provide jobs to one million youth across the country in the areas of IT, Construction, Electronics, Retail, Customer Services and Hospitality and provide them assured employment.

To achieve this aim DLF is establishing 250 training centres across the country, equipped with the best in curriculum, technology and faculty. Assured employment linkages have been built into the model to ensure its success. Through this initiative, the DLF Foundation aims to fulfil the void that exists presently in the social milieu. The initiative is targeted to provide employment to unemployed youth from the bottom of the pyramid by enabling them with the necessary

skill sets in demand and addressing the skill gap currently prevailing in the industry.

By associating with sector experts, industry watchers, and human resource consultants, the programme is customised to suit current industry demands, thereby increasing placement and retention prospects. The specially designed curriculum includes practical training, theoretical concepts and life skills model which guides the youth in mapping their career graph and assisting them in setting short to medium term goals for themselves. By placing them on a progressive career journey, DLF Foundation will contribute significantly to the overall target of skilling and up skilling 500 million people in the country by the year 2022.

Many underprivileged students, in spite of getting excellent grades and having big dreams, are compelled to either remain in those schools having poor infrastructure and low academic performance; or even worse, they are forced to drop out of the schools because they cannot afford to pay for their educational expenses. Even if they manage till primary level, they cannot hope to get inducted into the mainstream educational system, working their way up and providing for themselves and their families in a manner that can lift them from the vicious cycle of poverty.

“DLF Raghvendra Scholarship”, has been launched by DLF Foundation to support such underprivileged and meritorious students who are transferred to private schools with good infrastructure and track performance record. Talent identification and nurturing is the core of the scholarship programme. The Foundation covers for their complete educational expenses.

Over 875 scholarships per year are being awarded for School Scholarship (Class VI to XII), Undergraduate Scholarship (Engineering, IT, MBBS, Fine Arts and Sports) and Post Graduate Scholarship (MBA or equivalent).

Schools for Rural Poor

Access to education is one of the major areas of concern in rural India. To address this, DLF Foundation is running over 30 village-based schools for the underprivileged with special focus on the girl child in rural underserved areas of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In this regard a sum of Rs. 50 crores has been spent by DLF Foundation in partnership with Bharti Foundation for operationalisation of these schools. The curriculum and teaching-learning processes are designed to help children explore, question, reason, communicate and acquire culture roots while staying connected with society.

Schools for Slum Dwellers

To impart the means through which every child can realise his/her full potential, DLF has opened a series of DLF Swapna Sarthak Schools that provide free education to the marginalised and the underprivileged. The children of migrant labour and construction workers of Jharsa, Wazirabad, Nathupur, and Mohyal Colony (Sector 40) Gurgaon are all going to school as DLF Foundation runs four professionally managed Swapna Sarthak Schools for children who cannot afford to join regular schools. All enrolled children are provided with free uniforms, mid-day meals and learning materials.

Providing Quality Education in Rural Government Schools

DLF Learning Excellence Centres have been set up in 44 villages of Haryana by involving government schools, community teachers and village Panchayats. These Centres operate through established government schools and focus on strengthening basic education in English, Arithmetic and Hindi while developing holistic skills by combining learning with fun. Local volunteers are trained in innovative techniques, thus ensuring that they get good job opportunities and children relate easily with known faces from their own village.

School for Construction Workers

To ensure that the benefits of education reach poor construction workers, a number of schools for their wards are underway at project construction sites. These schools will not only provide free education, textbooks, uniform and meals, but also ensure holistic development and grooming.

Natural Gas-based Co-generation Systems: Natural gas-based power generation plant is used in DLF commercial buildings and this has led to considerable energy efficiency and consequent reduction of carbon emissions.

Green Construction Technologies: DLF has been using environment friendly construction technologies in its construction projects. Recycling of waste heat for air conditioning, treatment of domestic waste water and its reuse, rainwater harvesting and replacement of conventional cooling towers with adiabatic cooler contribute immensely to environmental conservation. New projects of DLF are being registered for green rating with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

Environmental SustainabilityDLF Group’s futuristic outlook encompasses a strong commitment to the use of environment friendly technologies. The use of innovative power generation systems, tapping on solar and wind energy, adoption of water conservation technologies and setting up of sewage treatment plants are indicative of the company’s endeavours in this regard.

Renewable Energy:Increased use of solar energy and wind energy sources in the energy mix contribute to savings in conventional energy.

A major initiative to resuscitate Gurgaon was launched under the banner of Gurgaon Renewal Mission (GRM) driven by a coalition of partners, comprising civil society including prominent citizens, business and government. GRM is a visible result oriented movement that was formed in November, 2011, to renew Gurgaon as the ‘dream city’ of India. DLF Foundation, which is spearheading this movement, has committed infrastructural support to the Mission along with launching a series of social initiatives to contribute to the development of the city.

The Mission is all set to take up the various challenges faced by Gurgaon by a collective effort of the local business, civil society as well as by the government to find collective solutions to the city’s social, infrastructure, health, governance and environmental sustainability related issues that negatively impact the development of the city, thereby making Gurgaon, a safe and secure place to live in.

The Mission is driven by a consortium of collaborating institutions and partners, under the overall

guidance of four Task Forces, viz. (a) Task Force on Infrastructure – Roads, Transportation, Traffic Management and Encroachment, (b) Task Force on Health, Hygiene and Disaster Management, (c) Task Force on Environmental Sustainability; and (d) Task Force on Good Governance. The Task Forces are currently working on developing a visible Road Map that would be implemented with the collective efforts of all stakeholders.
