SEL Lessons 16-20

Lesson 16: Self Awareness – Compliments

Sometimes, we forget how wonderful we are. Each and every one of us has things that

make us beautiful and unique. This is a love letter to yourself. Make a list of or draw 10

things that you like about yourself. When you are feeling down or disappointed in

yourself, look at this and remember that there is no one like you.

Lesson 17: Self-Management – Accepting No

I can accept being told no. I might not like being told no, but I have to stay calm and not get upset. When I am told no, I have choices I can make. I can respond in a mature way, or I can be upset and throw a tantrum. If I want to be mature, here is how I can respond when I am told no. ✓ I can tell the person how I

feel in a calm way. ✓ I can write or draw about

how I feel. ✓ I can do something else.

✓ I can ask the person in a nice

way to do something else. ✓ I can take quiet time if I feel

bad.

Self-Portrait – Draw and color yourself here!

What else can you do when you are told no?

Lesson 18: Decision Making – Reflection, Choice, and Possibilities

When something goes wrong, we sometimes react without thinking or weighing our choices. When you don’t use the

steps of problem solving to come up with a plan or solution, you can end up in more trouble. In the plus box, draw what

happens when we stop and think before we act. In the minus box, draw what happens when we don’t stop and think

before we act.

Lesson 19: Relationship Skills – Active Listening

A good friend has lots of good qualities. An example of a good quality is being a good

listener. Here are some ways you can be a good listener. Here are examples of good

listening behaviors. In the right column, write about a time when you used this skill to

be a good listener.

Put yourself into the other person’s shoes. Think, “How would I want to be treated?”

Make good eye contact.

Don’t make funny faces.

Do not interrupt.

Lesson 20: Social Awareness – No Words

In certain situations, it is important to communicate without using words. We know that

animals can communicate without words, but how do people communicate without

words?

First, let’s make a list of how some animals communicate.

Bees

Dogs

Birds

Cats

Now, think about how people can communicate without words.

Math Lesson 7

My learning goal(s):

• I can add fluently within 20.

Things I need for today’s lesson:

• Just a pencil!

Problem of the Day

Shane took 7 pictures of his goldfish and 13 pictures of his ferret. How many pet

pictures did he take?

Questions I can ask myself:

• What is the problem asking me to solve?

• Can I draw a picture to help me solve this problem?

© 2020 Catapult Learning. All rights reserved. 33

Solution

I can write this problem as an equation.

Number of goldfish pictures plus the number of ferret pictures is:

7 + 13 = I can solve this problem in many ways. I could draw a picture. I could use ten-frames. I could use a number line.

But this is an addition problem with numbers less than 20. I want to be able to add these numbers quickly.

One thing I notice is that 13 can be decomposed, or taken part, into 3 + 10. And 7 + 3 makes 10! This make the problem easier!

Now this problem becomes a simple doubles addition problem of 10 + 10:

© 2020 Catapult Learning. All rights reserved. 34

Fluency Practice

Let’s work on solving addition problems within 20 as quickly as we can!

1) 8 + 3 =

2) 9 + 7 =

3) 3 + 4 =

4) 2 + 6 = Math Games

Let’s play a game called Double More. In this game, we will use playing cards to help us quickly add two numbers together. All the sums will be within 20. After we add the cards, whichever monster has the higher sum, or total, gets to keep all four cards. Aces are equal to 1.

Let’s do the first one together:

Add up each monster’s cards. Which monster has the higher sum, or total?

The one-eyed monster won this round! He gets all four cards, which is 4 points!

Let’s play four more rounds. Figure out the winner of each round and keep score.

1)

Add up each monster’s cards. Who won this round? What is the new score?

(Don’t forget that the one-eyed monster already has 4 points from the last round.)

Math Lesson 8

My learning goal(s):

• I can subtract fluently within 20.

Things I need for today’s lesson:

• Just a pencil!

Problem of the Day At Davey’s school, first graders have to write 7 book reports. Second graders have to write 12 book reports. How many more books reports do second graders have to write?

Questions I can ask myself:

• What is the problem asking me to solve?

• Can I draw a picture to help me solve this problem?

© 2020 Catapult Learning. All rights reserved. 54

Solution

I know the first graders had to write fewer reports than the second graders, but how many more reports did the second graders have to write?

I’m going to draw a picture to solve this problem. I’m not going to draw books because that takes too long. I want this to be quick. I’ll use circles to represent books instead.

The circles on the first line are the 12 second-grade book reports. The circles on the second line are the 7 first-grade book reports.

I can solve this problem a few different ways. First, I can start with the 7 first-grade reports and count up until I get to 12.

But I can do this faster than counting by ones! I know that 7 + 3 gets me to 10 and then there’s just two more reports to get to 12. So, I did 7 + 3 + 2 to get to 12, using my knowledge of how to make 10.

3 + 2 equals 5. This means that the second graders have to write 5 more reports than

the first graders.

+33

+2

5 7 + 5 = 12

7 + 3 + 2 = 12

© 2020 Catapult Learning. All rights reserved. 55

I could also subtract to find the difference between 12 and 7. That gives me how many

dots would belong in the empty space.

Fluency Practice

Let’s work on solving subtraction problems within 20 as quickly as we can!

1) 18 - 3 =

2) 12 - 7 =

3) 11 - 6 =

4) 16 - 15 =

© 2020 Catapult Learning. All rights reserved. 56

Math Games

Let’s play a game called Subtra-Less. In this game, we will use playing cards to help us quickly subtract two numbers. All numbers will be within 20.

Subtra-Less is different from Double More. We play using face cards. If we get a face card, we need to draw an extra card and the face card becomes a ten. Also, the monster with the smaller difference gets to keep the cards. Sometimes they get 4 cards, and sometimes they get 5 or 6.

Let’s do the first one together:

Subtract each monster’s cards. Which monster has the smaller number?

© 2020 Catapult Learning. All rights reserved. 57

The difference for the monster on the left is 1 and the difference for the monster on the right is 2. 1 is smaller than 2 so the monster on the left won! He gets all four cards, which is 4 points!

Let’s play another round together and then you’ll do three more rounds on your own.

Subtract each monster’s cards. Who won this round? What is the new score?

(Don’t forget that when a face card is drawn, we draw an extra card and the face card becomes a ten. For the monster on the left, he adds up 10 and 8 and then subtracts 7.)

The difference for the monster on the left is 11. The difference for the monster on the right is 4. 4 is smaller than 11 so the monster on the right wins! Also, the monster on the right gets 5 cards because we drew an extra card. So the new score is 4:5.

© 2020 Catapult Learning. All rights reserved. 58

Now try three more rounds on your own. Make sure the keep track of the score!

1)

Subtract each monster’s cards. Who wins? What is the new score?

2)

Subtract each monster’s cards. Who won? What is the new score?

One more round! Who will be the winner?

STEM Project 4: Cleaning Up an Oil Spill

Have you heard about oil spills on the news? This project will teach you all about

oil spills in the ocean and how they affect the plants and animals that live there.

You are also going to test out different ways to clean up an oil spill.

Materials

• A pan or large bowl

• Water

• Vegetable Oil

• Dish Soap

Optional – You do not need all these materials, but you need at least one.

• Medicine Dropper

• Spoon

• Paper Towels

• Cotton Balls

Questions I can ask myself:

• What is the problem I am trying to solve?

• How can I solve it?

• What materials can I use?

• How can I make sure the solution works?

Instructions

1. Fill the pan or bowl with water.

2. Add some oil.

3. Try different ways to clean up the oil. Try a spoon, medicine dropper, paper

towel, or the cotton balls. If you have other items that you want to test out, go

ahead and try with the help of an adult. Make sure to draw or write about what

you see.

4. Drop a small amount of the dish soap in the water and oil mixture. Draw or record

what you see.
