Dear Community Members,

Welcome to the winter edition of the Community Education booklet!

Earlier this year, the High School District 214 Board of Education adopted a resolution that resulted in District 214 being the first school district in the nation to endorse Redefining Ready!, an initiative to take back the national dialogue on college, career, and life readiness so that our students are not reduced to one score on a single test.

Rather, we look at research-based indicators like community service, co-curric-ular participation, completion of challenging Advanced Placement coursework and attendance. We know this is about the whole student; about teaching them skills while they are with us that will prepare them for postsecondary success in a continually changing 21st century.

Community Education is no different. Every year, we add new opportunities for engagement and professional enrichment, meaningful dialogue on topics of importance in our community, family and adult literacy that empowers entire generations, skill-building, as well as worldwide travel. We know this is about lifelong learning, and ensuring every person who steps through our doors is able to reach his/her potential and build success, no matter what the end goal.

This summer, I wrote about the transition of Community Education into the District 214 Community Engagement and Outreach Department. That change is opening the doors to even more exciting opportunities for our community mem-bers, including a new thought-provoking lecture series we would like to work with the community to develop. Read more about this on Page 61.

Following the success of our “Decision 2016” presidential election conversation, we are introducing another free panel offering perspectives from journalists and academics who will review the first 30 days of the new presidency and discuss priorities and state-level changes. We’re also building new programming oppor-tunities for children as well as continually examining new opportunities that can enrich your life.

Thank you for being part of our program and our District!

We look forward to seeing you in our classrooms.

Sincerely,

Alva J. KreutzerPresident, Board of Education

District 214 Education Foundation

Our students can’t dream what they can’t see.

The District 214 Education Foundation supports student success, innovation and lifelong learning across District 214, creating and enhancing partnerships and programs that help every learner dream bigger and every student discover their future.

In a single year, gifts from corporate and individual donors have helped the Foundation take first-generation students and their parents to college campuses; provide funding for standout entrepreneurial students; fund scholarships for seniors demonstrating college and career readiness; empower generations through adult and family literacy programs and other integral Community Education programming; and pay for Advanced Placement tests for in-need students, translating to dozens of early college credits.

An investment in the Foundation is an investment in our schools and the future of our learners, in a time when 30 percent of District 214 students live in poverty and the future of state funding for public education is becoming increasingly uncertain.

Gifts to the Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, have the potential to impact 12,000 students across six nationally recognized comprehensive high schools and four programs of specialized learning, as well as community education programming.

District 214 has been part of the community for 100 years. Please join us as we move enthusiastically into the next century. We believe the best way to empower our schools and communities is to come together with the recognition that we are part of something greater than ourselves, and the knowledge that, working together, we make a difference.

Forest View High School Reopens as Part of District 214 Alumni Engagement

About 400 Falcons attended an Open House at the former Forest View High School on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The event was held at the former high school – now the Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights – as part of a continued effort to reengage and reconnect with District 214 alumni.

Former staff and alumni returned to Forest View to participate in self-guided tours, snack on tater tots in

the cafeteria (a favorite treat at the school) and reminisce.

The event also included opportunities to chat with former teachers and administrators, purchase shirts, view yearbooks and record favorite memories in a video booth.

Forest View High School opened in 1962 as the

District's third high school. It closed in 1986 amid declining enrollment, after educating two decades of proud Falcons.

District 214 launched its formal alumni presence this year with the creation of an Alumni Advisory Council, whose 32 members help guide alumni activities.

To keep up on alumni news and events, alumni can visit www.d214.org/alumni and register in the Alumni Database. Contact information will not be shared publicly.

District 214 Launches Law and Equity

Pathway for StudentsMore than a dozen attorneys, police chiefs, judges and collegiate criminal justiceprofessors gathered at Elk Grove High School in October to help launch High School District 214’s new Law and Equity pathway -- part of a unique Career Pathways program that helps guide students to postsecondary success.

The Law and Equity pathway specifically will address

potential careers in thelegal and criminal justice professions, providing interested students with relevant curriculum, external experiences like internships and mock trials and opportunities to earn college credit in the field before leaving high school.

The external partners, representing fields including corporate law, school law, criminal law, and more, served as an initial advisory group discussing ways to make the program a success -- from a review of curriculum to a conversation about how the classroom for such programs should look for the students.

The first class of the pathway already is being offered at Vanguard and Elk Grove and John Hersey high schools this year; it will be expanded in the coming years.

Collectively, District 214 offers 43 programs of study across 16 career clusters, including health science, finance, marketing, education, manufacturing, the arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Engaging community members and business leaders in the development of the pathways helps ensure the programs

Redefining Ready! cont'd

As part of National College and Career Readiness Month in October, District 214 held several conversations to engage stakeholders on our national initiative to change the dialogue on what makes students ready to succeed after they leave our schools.

Redefining Ready!, a multimetric approach to defining college and career readiness, was developed by District 214 in partnership with AASA, The School Superintendents Association.

Readiness indicators include co-curricular participation, attendance, completion of Advanced Placement and dual-credit courses and community service.

The District 214 Board of Education adopted the Redefining Ready! indicators as part of the official District instructional goals this fall. In October, National Louis University became the first higher education institution to sign a Redefining Ready! Statement of Support, with the understanding that America’s schools, including higher education institutions, have a responsibility to ensure students are College, Career and Life ready; standardized test scores fail to portray a comprehensive picture of students' potential; and our students, who learn in different ways, should be able to demonstrate readiness in different ways.

Throughout October, District 214 staff talked with stakeholders and educators from across our communities and the nation about why students cannot be defined by, or reduced to, a single score on a single test. Staff also participated in a one-day Twitter campaign, #214Ready, showing through hundreds of tweets how they prepare students for postsecondary success.

This fall, the Foundation will launch its annual appeal and District 214 employee campaign, allowing further opportunities to positively impact students’ lives.

Gifts to the Education Foundation have the potential to impact our 12,000 District 214 students at a time when 30 percent live in poverty and the future of state funding for public education is uncertain. The Foundation provides funding for success opportunities beyond the limitations of the District’s operating budget, ensuring every learner is positioned for future success. The Ancient World: Sacred Things and Secret Places Dr. T MudloffNEW! Looking through an ancient glass, we will investigate the thoughts that first conceived Sacred Things and Secret Places. What is it that constitutes the sacred? Once a place is designated as sacred it tends to remain that way for sometimes thousands of years. Using the beliefs which have come down to us from ancient times we can proceed deeper into these thoughts which, in some cases, we still find in use today. The ancient mythologies defined these concepts and determined the place of people, divinities and the notion of the eternal return. Take this opportunity to expand your knowledge and enjoy your trip through time with Egyptologist, Dr. Tom Mudloff. No previous knowledge needed. People and Professions: The Common Man in Ancient EgyptDr. Thomas F. Mudloff, EgyptologistNEW! All too often when we think of ancient Egypt we think of the great temples, pyramids and the fabulous tombs of the kings. There was another side to this culture however, exemplified by the average persons every day life. From potter to physician and scribe to sandal maker, this society required a variety of professions and skills to keep the wheel of civilization turning in the land of the Nile.
