Gracious Lakeside LivingYou’d think that lakeshore property in the land of 10,000 lakes would be fairly easy to
come by, but that’s hardly the case, given our year-round love of the water.
So when a lovely Lake Minnetonka lot became available in Orono, Highmark partners Jim Moras and Terry Gaulrapp decided to use this exclusive location as the setting for their striking 2008 Luxury Home Tour model.
“This was a rare opportunity on several counts,” said Jim. “Orono’s lakeside real estate is a precious commodity in general, and this particular property offers nearly 180 degree views of the lake.”
The vistas are quite impressive, because the lot’s position and a lack of obstructions creates stunning views as you look across the lake as well as east and west down the shoreline.
This idyllic location sets the theme for Highmark’s exquisite five-bedroom lake style cottage home, which received rave reviews during the Luxury Home Tour in June. The combination of the unique lot and bright, airy design is complemented by graciousness
and warmth from rustic white oak floors and a lake-side hearth room.
HighPoints• The home’s dramatic
design elements include impressive main floor lakeside windows, arched openings, and a double- sided arched stone fireplace facing the lake and dining room.

More room for kids—of all ages.As Doug and Tama Pudvah’s children became teenagers, their traditional 1915 Arts and
Crafts home needed to expand as well, so Highmark added 700 square feet on two levels to accommodate the crew. “The kids grew so much and so fast that things were getting cramped, especially in the kitchen and when their friends were visiting,” explained Tama.
Working closely with Doug and Tama, Highmark created a design and project plan that would add extra space and comfort to daily living. “We focused on both function and style so that their family life would run smoother, but not at the expense of ambiance and entertaining,” said Highmark partner Terry Gaulrapp.
The expanded floor plan included:• A private wing for the second floor master suite and bath includes a secluded
view of the back yard.• Creating expansive main floor living by removing two walls to open the kitchen
to the dining room and the rest of the house.• Installing new stainless steel kitchen appliances including a six-burner Wolf range.• Adding a dinette with oak ceiling beams, large windows, and access to the new
screened porch.• Doubling the number of bathrooms, including a new main floor powder room
with pedestal sink and white mosaic tile floors.• Adding a mud room with a locker system, shoe bench and organizer cabinet that
includes purse/briefcase storage and drop zone for iPods and cell phones.• Carrying existing interior trim and other details throughout to maintain original style.• Hydronic radiant in-floor heat under all new floors, and whole-house
high-velocity air conditioning.• New energy-efficient Marvin double-hung windows throughout.
An arbor and three-season porch add to the exterior appeal of this lovely Arts and Crafts home.
This stunning upper-level expansion included:• A game room with
built-in toy storage cubbies
• Family room with wet bar
• Guest room with three-quarter bath
• Existing garage entry modified to include:
- Organization area with drop desk and filing
- Storage area for purses, briefcases, iPods & cell phones
- Mud room with locker system
- Powder room• New garage-level
workshop• Added shed roof to
front porch to match updated exterior style of garage.
After: Gables, shed roofs and other new exterior details enhance this home’s traditional curb appeal.
Before: An above-garage expansion was the Larson’s best
option to add a family room, guest bedroom and office.
When you don’t have room, make some. With youngsters aged two and four, Matt and Lisa Larson needed extra space for a
family room and storage, but their 1990’s salt box home lacked a full basement, so some creative thinking was required. “In the design stage, it was clear that our best
option was to expand over the garage,” said Matt.
Because the Larsons had a three-car garage, the expansion’s final design encompassed 900 square feet.
“Our goal was to give them both added space and livability, so we worked hard to ensure everything enhanced their current lifestyle,” explained Highmark partner Terry Gaulrapp.
Along with the upper renovation, Highmark created a new garage entry that includes a mud room with locker storage system to hang coats and control clutter from shoes, bags, cell phones and iPods. The garage was also expanded to include a new workshop.
