Building blocks for a
living lab – Danish style

Innovation tour to the Region of Southern Denmark
October 2016
In 2012 NHS Confederation flew to Denmark,
the home of Lego…
…and innovative welfare technologies
In April 2014, KSS AHSN did the same.
We saw relevant technologies and co-design
processes and met inspiring collaborators
They shared our belief that we need a new model
of care to meet the needs of our ageing
populations
We need a different model of care!
One that relies
less on face to face
contact and
emergency hospital
admissions
In 2015 we took more like-minded
colleagues from Kent, Surrey and Sussex
‘I just wanted to thank you for the
opportunity last week, lots of useful
learning but also a great opportunity to
build relationships. It's convinced me of
the potential of KSS AHSN to lead on key
elements of the agenda, especially
building links with industry. Please let me
know what I can do to support you.’ NHS Chief Executive
NHS England’s new strategy provided the
opportunity to realise our ambitions with
its call to…
‘Develop a small number of ‘test bed’ sites alongside our
Academic Health Science Networks…
They will serve as real world sites for ‘combinatorial’
innovations that integrate new technologies,
bioinformatics, new staffing models and payment-for-
outcomes.’
KSS AHSN brought a consortium
together
Surrey and Borders
Partnership NHS FT
University of Surrey
5G Centre for Innovation
Industry innovators
(and… Public Intelligence
& Christina Wanscher!)
TIHM for dementia industry partners
The consortium put together a bid to
fund an IoT test bed in Surrey to test how
connecting devices could improve care
and quality of life for people living with
dementia
And... the bid succeeded!
We aim to accelerate STPs with plans
to introduce user-centred design and
living labs thinking…
Less like… …more like
health improving
wealth creating
world changing
…and more 5G
projects
