Building Awareness of the Common CoreAug. 29

Seat teachers in teams (grade level, subject area, PLCs, similar courses, etc.)1Pre-viewingTeaching Channel videos showcase schools that have been piloting Common Core State StandardsElementaryhttp://tinyurl.com/cxmezjsMiddlehttp://tinyurl.com/cjz49kv Highhttp://tinyurl.com/d5mt363

Remember to send the email with pre-viewing information to your staff several days prior to August 29th.

You may want to take a brief moment to ask a few people to share one thing they learned from the preview. 2

Points to consider

As you think about the closing of one school year and begin the transformation into another, file away just one number:

65 percent..

..fully 65 percent of todays grade-school kids may end up doing work that hasnt been invented yet.Slides 3,4,5,6 and 7 are on the Slide Show that is available for use as teachers come into the room. If you choose not to use the slide show, you might want to talk through some of the data on each slide. If you do use the slide show, you might want to consider deleting these slides from the presentation. This is your choice.

The statistics on this slide are the research of Cathy N. Davidson, co-director of the annual MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competitions.3Think about it.

Think back 50 years. could educators then have predicted the worldwide impact of the Internet, which emerged globally in 1994, or the mobile phone?

These technologies have not just become tools of learning, but networking and knowledge sharing, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship.

We have seen lots of changes in our world take place since 1962

From 60s television to today's toolsRemember the Star Trek Communicator..

and now today we have the Smart PhoneLooks like a Trekkie must have invented the iPhone!5The illiterate of the 21st century will not bethose who cannot read and write, but thosewho cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.--Alvin Toffler

Great quote to read aloud. You might consider opening the day with a brief discussion about what this quote means with respect to educational change.

6Beyond the Bubble Tests: The Next Generation of Assessments

I am convinced that this new generation of state assessments will be an absolute game-changer in public education.--Education Secretary Arne DuncanSeptember 2, 2010Education Secretary Arne Duncan said this in reference to the common assessments that are being generated for use by the states taking part in Common Core.

Briefly review the agenda

8Objectives

Teachers will be able to:increase their Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy (VSET 1A). locate the Common Core State Standards that apply to their courses.compare the level of rigor required by the CCSS with the level of rigor currently expected of students.Review todays training objectives

9ObjectivesTeachers will be able to:determine which of the CCSS they currently teach and at what level.understand that the CCSS do not just require new standards to be taught, but they also require teaching that requires students to think more deeply and at higher levels.apply the high impact anchor literacy strategy in their classrooms.participate in the extended learning options of their choice.

Review todays training objectives

The NGSSS Next Generation Sunshine State Standards were adopted between 2007 and 2008.The CCSS Common Core State Standards were adopted by Floridas State Board of Education in June 2010.

When you take a close look, there are very clear differences that are apparent between NGSSS and CCSS. [You can go through these bullet by bullet.] Bold and underlined words illustrate key differences. Look at the expectations for all students with the attainment of learning goals. We are making changes in interim assessments and cleaning up district common assessments, so that they are more valid and reliable for your use. With the Common Core, its about narrowing the focus so that we can go deeper into what is most important.

END with Think Pair Share (1 minute think time, turn to shoulder partner and discuss 2 minutes, regroup and take2-3 comments) 11CCSS and PARCCAssessment Examples

PARCC is the organization that will be creating the test for Floridas student to assess Common Core Standards. There are 23 states at this time that will be using the PARCC assessment. Choose the assessment examples that are appropriate to your school level.(You may wish to print these out for table groups to share.)

For the next several slide follow this format:Show exampleAfter viewing all test items end with 1 minute Quickwrite asking teachers to jot down what surprised them about the test questions they saw.Talk with your peers about what you notice

12Elementary parcc assessment examples13

Both of these are Grade 3 Reading examples. These are Reading, even though they may look like Science. In order to do well on the Common Core assessments, students will have to have knowledge of both reading and sciencethats why literacy in the content areas is so important. 14

These are Grade 3 Math examples. 15

This is a Grade 3 Math performance-task item. 16Middle school parcc assessment examplesPARCC is the organization that will be creating the test for Floridas student to assess Common Core Standards. There are approximately 30 states that will be using the PARCC assessment. 17

This is a 6th Grade Reading item that students would answer after reading a passage from the novel, Julie of the Wolves. Part A of the item looks somewhat like what weve seen on FCAT. However, Part B from this item requires students to determine the context used to establish the accuracy of their answers. Students might guess Part A, but would have much more difficulty in guessing Part B. 18

This Grade 6 Reading question requires students to choose an adjective that describes a character. (There is more than one correct answer.) Students then must choose sentences that substantiate their own particular reading of a character. Students must show that they are able to access complex text, cite textual evidence to support their analysis, and reread for comprehension. 19

Grade 7 Reading20

This is an example of the type of writing you will need to ask your students to perform. How do you think this sounds different from what students are currently required to do on FCAT?21

This Grade 10 Reading question requires students to choose an important theme about human behavior as described in Daedalus and Icarus. Students then must choose evidence that substantiates their own particular reading. Students must show that they are able to access complex text, cite textual evidence to support their analysis, and reread for comprehension.

Floridas common core state standards implementation timelineThis is Florida timeline for the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.F shows full implementation for all content areas. L shows implementation of content area literacy standards for grades K-12.B shows blended instruction of CCSS and NGSSS. You can see that the work of full implementation began with kindergarten last year (2011-2012).It continues with full implementation of CCSS in Grade 1 in 2012-2013, Grade 2 in 2013-2014, and Grades 3 through 12 in 2014-2015.Content Area Literacy Standards were set to begin full implementation beginning in 2011-2012, so you can see that in some content areas we still have some work to do. These literacy standards expect all content areas to give students exposure to text complexity, quality and range in all grades K through 12. The last year that the NGSSS will be assessed using FCAT 2.0 will be in the 2013-2014 school year.

Right now looking at the 2012-2013 expectations, as a district we are about a year behind. We have some work to do. [You might touch on where your school is in this processare you ahead of the states timeline, on pace with it, behind a bit?]32Anchor Literacy Standards

College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards Required of all subject areas in K-12Reading and WritingThese are the Anchor Literacy Standards that the previous slide refers to by using L. The College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards are the same for grades K-12, are designed to help ensure that students are prepared for the next level, and will be the focus of our study today.33Crosswalk ActivityInstructionsBreak into homogeneous teamsEnd with group debrief

Be sure to print the copies of the crosswalk documents and have highlighters available at each table (unless you are having teachers use computers and use the computers highlighting tool). If you do not have highlighters available, you might use symbols instead (star, underline, circle).

Instructions:YellowHighlight the standards or parts of the standards that you feel that you already teach in yellowBlueHighlight the parts of the standards that you feel you teach but not quite to the level of rigor suggested by Common Core in bluePinkHighlight the parts of the standards that you do not currently teach in pink

Post-activity Wrap Up:The areas that are now yellow should help you to realize that the Common Core Standards are not all new. The areas that are now blue (or green) are areas that might be easiest to expand upon or deepen. The areas that are pink would be potential areas to think about developing a unit around in the future.34Classroom ConnectionDistrict focus comes from high-impact anchor literacy strategies offered at state CCSS by Just Read FloridaOne Anchor Literacy Strategy will be incorporated into each professional development dayExpectation is to use the highlighted strategy at least once each week between sessions

Read aloud

[This is a general overview of the idea that each early release session will focus on an anchor literacy strategy.]35This Sessions StrategyMake close reading and rereading of texts central to lessons.

What does this mean?

What does this mean for my content area?

This sessions strategy is Make close reading and rereading of texts central to lessons.

What is close reading? The two-minute video clip from Dr. Douglas Fisher shows him discussing what close reading entails.36What is close reading?

What good readers do to get the most meaning from complex textA process that entails reading and rereading multiple times, each time with a different purpose and focusMicro-reading: the attentive reading of a textA finely detailed, very specific examination of a text. Discuss this and the next 2 slides with attention to the words in color.37What is close reading?May require breaking text into smaller segments for some studentsShort text: use entire text for a close readLonger text: select specific text segments for a close read; then, relate those segments to the whole work

Close reading helps students to:

Understand the purpose in readingSee ideas in a text as being interconnectedLook for and understand systems of meaningEngage in a text while readingGet beyond surface reading or skimmingFormulate questions and seek answers to the questions while reading
