• Beth Watkins, Physical Therapist II and Justin Lewicke, Motion Analyst presented a webinar to Physiotherapy Alberta on “Observational Gait Analysis and Philosophy of Biomechanics” in January 2020

Congratulations to Cara Kaup, Physical Therapist II who will be receiving a clinical innovation award from the Arthritis Health Professions Associations for her work on the ‘3 Questions Project’ (a pediatric rheumatology tool supporting children to improve their healthcare self-management).

Glenrose Dental ClinicDid you know that the we have a Dental Clinic at the Glenrose? While aimed at offering treatment and preventative measures to protect the oral health of adult and older adults with complex medical needs and disabilities the Dental Clinic will also support staff appointments.

“I broke a filling and called down and there was an appointment available that same day. Within 30 minutes, my tooth was repaired!” shares Gail Aguillon, one of the Directors at the Glenrose.

The clinic is open Monday-Friday from 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. With the clinic serving a broad client base in the community, many requiring assistance and/or escorted transport to come, the clinic has a higher rate of cancellations than other clinics may experience. As such last minute appointments are sometimes available. You can also choose to have your dental work completed by Supervised Hygiene and Dental students for a reduced rate. If you want to know more or to make an appointment, call 780-735-8810 or check out AHS website: https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/findhealth/Service.aspx?id=5753&serviceAtFacilityID=1005550

Friends of Glenrose Continue to Contribute to Patient Care & ComfortThe Glenrose received an enhancement to the outpatient/visitor wheelchair fleet thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Glenrose. The Friends of Glenrose purchased 10 STAXI’s, approximately $20,000, for placement at the Glenrose Main Entrance and in the Underground Parkade. STAXIs are compact wheelchairs that stack together like shopping carts and take up minimal space. This specialty wheelchair offers an added comfort for outpatients and visitors who would not normally require a wheelchair, but find the long walks to their destinations within the hospital very taxing on their strength. Using the STAXI, patients can save their energy for therapy and have proven ideal for the site. Thank you to Friends of Glenrose for supporting this much needed resource.

Glenrose Celebrates the International Year of the Nurse and the MidwifeThe World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. Nurses play a vital role in providing rehabilitation health services at the Glenrose. To celebrate nursing contributions, the Nursing Professional Practice team will be featuring Glenrose Nurses in various roles, throughout the year with monthly publications of the Nurse to Know. Glenrose staff can join the 2020 Year of the Nurse celebrations, by viewing the Nurse to Know display posted on the Life Long Learning Tree located on the main floor wall, between the front entrance and the Corner Store.

GLENROSE EVENTSGlenrose Work on Wellness Committee Spreads Cheer on Blue MondayThe third Monday of January is considered to be the most depressing day of the year and has been dubbed “Blue Monday”. The theory is that this is due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark winter nights and the arrival of credit card bills.

In the hopes of spreading some cheer and making the day a bit sunnier and happier the Glenrose Work on Wellness (WOW) Committee hosted a Blue Monday Treat Table. The committee had cookies, apples and oranges available for anyone who stopped by and also hosted a “Blue” Jeans Week.

Glenrose Corner Store Gets An UpgradeThe Friends of the Glenrose recently upgraded the Corner Store! In addition to fresh paint and reorganization of the space, new merchandise has been sourced to provide a new shopping experience for patients, staff and visitors! The Corner Store offers a wide range of products including some therapeutic supplies, snacks and confectionaries, cards, gifts and floral arrangements. Please come by and see the many new items for purchase. Revenues from sales of products go towards care and comfort items for patients of the Glenrose.

Thank You to the Friends of Glenrose! The Glenrose got the opportunity to say Thank You to the Friends of Glenrose for their recent contribution to support a research study that will take place over the next four years. The Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR) has grant opportunities each year and the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and the University of Alberta in collaboration with the Glenrose put forward an application. The study focus is to support seamless transitions of Spinal Cord Injury patients from rehabilitation into the community. CIHR very much supports projects that have far reaching impacts and are endorsed by many organizations and community partners. The Friends of Glenrose generously donated $80,000.00 ($20,000 annually over the next four years) to help support this project. Out of the 15 grants that were shortlisted, we are proud to share that this proposal came in second place nationally. We are confident that the Friends of Glenrose support was a key factor in the success of this grant. Friends of Glenrose prides itself on promoting comfort to patients and procures items and equipment to that end. Supporting research activities such as this, will indeed have far reaching impacts to patients by enabling system and improved community integration for not just patients of the Glenrose, but provincially as well. Dr. Chester Ho, Principle Investigator of the project, Professor and Division Director ,Spinal Cord Injury Research Chair, and AHS Edmonton Zone Clinical Section Head for Rehabilitation along with Gail Aguillon Director of Adult Rehabilitation at the Glenrose were honored to hold a small celebration to share their thanks for this important contribution.

Edmonton Oil Kings Visit On January 29th the Edmonton Oil Kings made a special visit to the kids on Unit 201. There were lots of laughs as the hockey players challenged the kids to games of air hockey and shuffleboard but things got more serious when a Jenga tournament broke out. Finally, the players took a tour of the newly completed pediatric Family Room. The visit was coordinated by the Glenrose Foundation and was a fun break for the children staying at the hospital.

Glenrose Foundation Serves up SlicesJanuary is a long month, especially for kids at the hospital. The Glenrose Foundation helped break up a cold winter day by providing a special lunch for the kids and staff in the Children’s Mental Health and Addiction unit. They enjoyed pizza, fruit and vegetables and then had a surprise “Hot Chocolate Bar” with lots of toppings for their drinks.
